  • The other upload of this song on UA-cam cuts out a lot of the intro for some reason, so I’ve decided to post it myself so I don’t have to pretend it doesn’t bother me anymore.
This is hands down one of the greatest rock songs ever composed, noise or otherwise. The way the lead vocal tracks trade off between the left and right channels during the verse while jobbing chants litter the center mix makes the transition into the chorus something magical as all of it finally unites into one cacophonous wall of shit. Even better are Yoshimi’s inhale screams. In most Boredoms tracks they are used sparingly, usually as a start to a song’s climax, but here they are interspersed so liberally, sounding off indiscriminately around the margins loudly sometimes while other times barely discernible, almost as though her voice is traveling deeper and deeper into the studio. The song has such a material, full-bodied presence, but all of it is in service to the ending. The final hurrah quite literally explodes. I have no other words for it. It is the bomb, the shrapnel, the split atom, the fucking hemorrhoids-everything, everywhere, all at once, held miraculously together by that simple yet addictive bass riff. I don’t even think Hiyashi Hira is plucking the strings. The surrounding music is just so fucking loud that it vibrates the strings for him. You can literally hear the air particles tremble in abject terror at how viscerally the sound barrier has been violated. It is an immense finale. Possibly my favorite in all of the Boredoms’ discography, though trying to pick a favorite is like asking which finger I most want to keep. Nevertheless, I Am Cola is the song that most honorably echoes the pain of tinnitus, and I love every aching second of it.
