I work in a dangerous industry and have been in the same position as what he is describing, you are in the middle of explaining to a customer what the safe working practice and procedure is and you suddenly notice that their eyes have glazed over, they stopped listening the moment they realised what the financial costs are going to be to get the job done. You instantly know that they are going to cancel the job and start up again later with another contractor who have a substandard safety culture.
I'm so happy people are seeing ocean gate as the canary in the coalmine it is. Society is in deep ship right now and those who benefit from this amoral rotten state of it are trying tl pull the wool over our eyes. It doesn't seem to be working I hope
Rush told an audience that there hadn’t been an accident for over 35 years, so he didn’t need testing 😩 no…testing is why there hasn’t been an accident! His ego was in my opinion (non technical, just common sense) a huge part of this disaster
He's basically saying that he showed these guys that even if you can't afford to test every design idea, you can do a computer simulation analysis to get an idea of whether or not this is a good idea beforehand. Finite element analysis (FEA) basically takes an object or an assembly, breaks it down into little tiny pieces (elements) and performs complex physics equations on them based upon what materials they're made out of (carbon fiber, titanium, acrylic, etc.) to analyze how those pieces will interact with each other and subsequent pieces, so on and so forth. I'm an aerospace design engineer, I do this kind of stuff all the time. It helps you decide on the feasibility of a design path before you get to the point where you've invested vast amounts of money into prototypes and testing them. If these guys at OceanGate weren't even willing to do FEA simulations it really shows that this company had a breakneck engineering culture and likely massive financial issues.
Yeah especially because finite element method is so easy to implement these days. It's NOT hard, yes it requires specialized knowledge but there was a team of engineers -- each of which could easily do finite element method with their eyes closed.
He raised several red flags in 2018 about the integrity of the structure, particularly the Windows. He asked the engineering firm to test that window design. He also saw major flaws after additional analysis. He sent the concerning window reports to Ocean gate, and assumed wrongly that Stockton would act based on a previous conversation with him: "he made it very clear that I may have an aerospace degree but I am not the engineer. Stockton said he was going to hire an engineer who knows what they are doing" LOL "somewhere they change their mind, and I do not know when that happened but there was a change. It is somewhere around the time when we delivered the window. You need to do the testing... But it was left as a hanging Chad" So, he confronted Rush about the Titan design, he urged him to slow his approach, but of course, he rejected him and all his colleagues' concerns.
That doesn't matter. Just because something is rated to 99 doesn't mean it will break at 100. It just means that it can safely be used, however many times, up to 99 (random non-unit number to prove the point). But above that, the chance of failure starts increasing at a rapid rate. Spare tires on your car *might* make it to 100 mph, but the chance of catastrophic blow out would be huge. So the fact that you might make it to 100 mph on them means nothing.
You’re missing the point. Which was that the sub was an assemblage of death traps travelling in loose formation and it was a competition to see which failed first… and that Ocean Gate had a culture of avoiding even cheap testing via computer simulation.

Like a lot of practices, just because it’s cheaper doesn’t mean better, happens in the law field all the time with people who just expect free stuff
Absolutely 💯

Here's how testing works with a narcissistic boss. Boss: "Does it work?" Team: "No." Boss: "Ah it'll work. It'll work!"

Why is everyone so nth degree perfectionist fussy about the audio? And suggesting he's rambling? It's all audible and all relevant. Get a life!

You can see it in people's eyes when they lose interest. So typical. Fatal outcome

I'm fascinated why the salutation (normally "Dear") was redacted. I wonder what salutation he could have used instead and what it might reveal.
Some of the redactions could probably be identified with a bit of research, they seem rather odd. (Not conspiracy odd, just odd.)
