Pigs - as animals - might be rather underrated, because we mostly see them as providers of meat (in some parts of the world). They are actually quite intelligent.
Listening to this again, 'Animals' is probably the most guitar-y Pink Floyd album.

There was a Canadian comedy called "The Newsroom". In one episode, Jim Wolcott, the anchor, becomes the owner of a pot belly pig, and spends the episode explaining how smart the thing is (Wolcott is an idiot news reader). He's kidnapped by the Taliban while on assignment and held for $2 million ransom but the terrorists settle for $250 K because in the videos they send to the station, he goes on and on about the pig. So they release him. The Newsroom is a classic, IMO.

Maybe you don't like the animal "pig" because you don't "know them"(?) They're actually at least as cleaver as dogs but (normally) just don't appeal to man as much because of their looks. Same reason people (prooved through psychological experiments) don't tend to attribute unknown "ugly" people as good personality characteristics as "beautiful" ones...

I'm sure I'm not the only one but I wish the outro guitar solo would have been about a minute longer at least! Also, I was lucky enough to see them in 1977 for the In the Flesh tour when they played all of Animals then all of Wish You Were Here then half of Dark Side of The Moon for their encore. And the outro guitar solo for pigs three different ones at that concert was about 3 minutes longer and it was incredible!!! David Gilmour was on that night and he was playing like an insane Mad man but under control, so perfect the sound was incredible I just wish someone would have recorded it with some good visual and audio equipment! Who knows maybe they'll surprise us someday with an actual recording of that tour, one could only hope!

The anger and disgust in that outro guitar solo is a masterpiece of relaying an emotion musically. Perfect match to the theme of the lyrical part of the song. Reminds me of the angry synthesizer at the end of Welcome To The Machine. They’re so good at that.

And then proceeds to show me the last pink floyd vinyl he had and the person who returned the vinyl brought it in to the record store earlier that day and he pulls out the vinyl and it turns out it was an Original Press from 1977 the previous owner had bought it when it first came out and couldn’t hold onto it anymore. This is my favorite album of all time and I got so lucky with an original press that i never thought i would get my hands on an original press but i am now the current owner of the Vinyl, by the way it’s in perfect condition and it was sold to me for $20

Pink Floyd often had a giant pig on stage for this song, and sometimes also the awesome tribute band Brit Floyd does this. It's pretty impressive, with that huge pig shaped creature behind the band, moving its light beaming eyes across the audience and making those piggy sounds. And on that note - Brit Floyd is really, really good, and as good as it gets for substitutes for the real think. I've seen them four or five times and it's always excellent entertainment. So go and see them if you get the chance :-)

I've seen about a hundred concerts lifetime.....One of the top three I've seen out of all those shows... was a tribute band.... The Australian Pink Floyd Show.. it was just before they broke up and split into the two bands (Brit and Aussie Floyd). I've seen them since and they're both really good... I'd say Brit Floyd is a better show now because they put more into the stage show to make it a "PF" concert feel.. but yeah totally worth going to.

What's "Rat Bag" in video title stand for? [Edit: I had only seen the music part of the video when I wrote the comment, "Rat Bag" was not yet adressed]. As all Pink Floyd it is good music, however, after having seen a video of a live performance (in Mexico I believe) where they performed the track with a contemporary political agenda I do not agreed with, so the song is ruined for me because of that. While a lot of art naturally is political in its essence, I wish artists could refrain from ramming down their own political views and beliefs in the throat of the audience. The Mexico performance unfortunately is a big mar on my Pink Floyd perception. Wish I could blot it out, but can't.

There's an online Rolling Stone interview from Sept. 30, 2019 with Waters where he explains who the three pigs are. The first is no particular individual, but an amalgam of "any businessman who’s more interested in making money than they are in having relationships with other human beings, which might be more rewarding than accumulating wealth"; the second is about Margaret Thatcher; and the third, Mary Whitehouse (I'm old enough to remember her, a nasty bigoted piece of work). Google "Roger Waters Talks ‘Us + Them’ Film, Why Pink Floyd’s Songs Remain Relevant".

Perhaps the motivation of the greedy and malicious to behave as they do is simple training. In the kids’ game Hungry Hungry Hippos each player controls a mouth opening to capture marbles - MOST WINS, the allegory of consumption cannot be missed. Whereas, the idea of making sure others have enough is the product of self-examination.

Roger Waters is a very cynical guy, sort of the anti-Jon Anderson. For me this was the last real Pink Floyd album with all 4 members contributing to the music. The next 2 albums were more Roger Waters projects using the band members as his backing group. Gilmour contributed to some of the songwriting but Wright hardly at all. The tone of the band changed and gone was the classic guitar/keyboards sound that was their signature.
Mary Whitehouse used to complain about TV shows such as "Doctor Who" scaring children with their cliff-hangers, starting letter-writing campaigns and such.

You could tell just by looking at her that she was a nasty bitch. Although the “White House” mention in the song makes Americans think of THE White House (which is understandable) it still fits the song since the actual White House was a “charade” when this album came out. And Trump just really topped it off. If you go on Wikipedia there is a good bit of info on Mary Whitehouse. She was like the stereotypical mean old lady schoolteacher who would beat the children.

Most Americans pronounce the word "charade" like share-aid. The famous film title is usually pronounced that way. There was a promo clip from Star Trek: TNG that featured Riker saying the word charade pronounced in the British fashion like sherrod. It ran all week, so often my brother and I used to joke about it. Then when the episode actually aired, Riker pronounced it share-aid.

the genius device of the words here is the citing of Mary Whitehouse, which Roger Waters must have known would remain useful once the specific MP he was talking about had gone from UK politics and it could become about whatever American president you'd want it to be about
The 1st verse could be about Jeff Bezos or any predatory Capitalist, and the 2nd could be about the phenomena of "Karens". Really a timeless song that expresses a Leftist perspective long absent from popular music.
If you agree with Roger here, I'd point you in the direction of a less celebrated, but no less powerful, polemicist songwriter called Eugene McDaniels, who also penned the classic protest anthem "Compared to What?"

    PIGS (Three Different Ones)
    Composed by: Roger Waters
Meaning of Pigs (3 Different Ones)
freely translated from this page of the italian site LEGENDARY COVER:
    legendarycover.it/testi-traduzioni/pink-floyd/pigs-three-different-ones/
The central song of Animals is not in the middle by pure chance but because it is about pigs: the center of power.
Pigs are the real powerful in Pink Floyd's Orwellian Animals Farm. They control the sheep and also the dogs; the latter favor them with their wicked actions but at the same time they must be afraid of them, because apparently pigs can see everything and do everything, even fly.
Pigs are the largest, those who have so much power in their hands that it is impossible to keep it all to themselves, for this reason they transfer it to the lower floors, to ensure, with this concession of prestige, their position on the throne possibly forever.
Pigs are corrupt and corrupt, they eat far more than their stomach can ask for. But behind their greatness they are fake (charade). Roger Waters, author of the Pigs text, uses this word to mean a staging, a farce. It is not to be confused with our term charade which instead identifies a puzzle game made of riddles. However, it could be that the meaning of charade is connected to the riddle.
Pig is always on stage, even when it shouldn't. His appearance is respectable and sometimes attractive, but under the mask he is dirty.
It is the largest wheel of the cart, well oiled by the mechanisms that set the machine of power in motion.
In the first verse, Waters does not get to be dangerously explicit (with lots of names) as in the other two, but the first pig probably takes in most of the men of power, the lobbies and those who move the puppets by placing themselves above everything, in every field.
The image of a pig eating with his head stuck in the bin and meanwhile orders the others to dig, so that they work for him and provide him with more food, gives a good idea of the character.
Pigs (3 Different Ones), unlike Dogs, is a more breezy, less claustrophobic song, which almost manages to find its own defense weapon in sarcasm. Each verse ends with "You're nearly a treat but you're really a cry" to underline how the narrow-mindedness of these individuals is so sad as to arouse laughter as a reaction, to exorcise everything with irony, as if it was a bad joke to laugh at, even though there is only to cry.
The second pig is the figure of the politician, even in general, but there is speculation about his true identity because Waters is believed to be targeting the not yet British Prime Minister Margareth Thatcher. In 1977, the Iron Lady was just preparing to lead the UK but was already a fixture in British politics.
The reference to the "old hag", English slang for "old witch" and to the "feel of the steel" suggest that she is above all the recipient of the second verse. Thatcher will become Prime Minister and the experience will mark Waters to the point of dedicating to her, in The Final Cut, another thought with a personalized dedication on The Fletcher Memorial Home.

... on The Fletcher Memorial Home. ---> reprise
The third verse contains a direct, very heavy attack on the English activist Mary Whitehouse.
Whitehouse was one of the most prominent personalities in England in the mid-1970s. Moral to the core and strongly conservative to the point of forging a lasting collaboration with Margareth Thatcher.
Mary Whitehouse's social programs lashed out against all kinds of liberalism and permissiveness. On issues of interest to young people, with his activity he obscured many magazines that aimed to inform young people and children about the damage of censorship, drug use and sexual education.
For her constant struggle against "obscenities", things related to sex that she saw as an obsession, Waters calls her unable to experience sexual pleasure, with tight lips that obviously are not the lips of the mouth, and terribly alone (cold feet proves that in bed she is so alone that her feet are frozen).
Waters' thrust continues by asking her if by chance she was abused when she was a child:
      Followed by unmistakable panting.
Mary Whitehouse is the object of by far the hardest attack in the song, because she is the representation of that latent and creeping power that is even more difficult to stem: the power and influence of the media and harmful activism. You can overturn a politician from his chair, but bad information is like an uncontrollable tide.
Whitehouse wanted to block a certain type of free and scientific information, certainly at the basis of culture and progress, in favor of that of a religious nature, favoring many types of censorship.
His aim at censorship arouses, perhaps, even more anger in Roger Waters for another news item.
Mary Whitehouse had become famous in the early 1970s for her controversy with the magazine "The Little Red Schoolbook", a guide for young people on sex, drugs and adult attitudes. The magazine, which had started circulating in Denmark, was prosecuted for "obscenities" in 1971.
Whitehouse said she was satisfied with the ban on that "revolutionary text" that would do "incalculable damage".
Among other things, he declared these words:
"... open rebellion against the 'system', be it school, parents or authority generally, was openly advocated, while children were constantly exhorted to collect evidence against teachers of alleged injustices or anything which was likely to enhance revolution."
"... open rebellion against 'the system', be it school, parents or authority in general, was openly supported, while children were constantly urged to gather evidence against teachers of alleged injustices or anything that could strengthen the revolution "
Does it remind you of anything?
The struggle of children against the abuses of adults, the revolution against school and its power: one of the most important bricks of The Wall.
Mary Whitehouse is saying that children shouldn't be pushed to gather evidence against adult abuse. It is, in practice, favoring a strict control of children by adults, by any means.
The freedom of children, coming to be able to afford to accuse an adult, was for her to fight. The text was revolutionary because for the first time it would have taken some power away from the world of adults to give it to children, through knowledge and scientific and non-bigoted education.
Whitehouse got in the way and blocked its diffusion, as if it were a heretical text, which is why Waters sees it as the third pig, so guilty and shameless that one cannot but call it by name.
He accuses her of blocking what she sees as the "evil tide"
You got to stem the evil tide and keep it all on the inside
Favoring the opposite result, that is, keeping it all inside people, dormant, ready to let loose at any moment.
Even Mary would almost make you laugh if there were no crying.
Pigs (3 Different Ones) is another big track where David Gilmour uses a talk box on his Telecaster to achieve the pig grunt. They are excited and hungry lines, in the constant rhythm of this song that only comes to life when Pink Floyd is done with the Whitehouse. Then the song explodes, for the first time, definitely and suddenly, with drums, bass and Gilmour's guitar screaming, distorted and uncontrolled. A liberating and amazing solo, which sweeps everything away before slowly fading into the bleating of the sheep.
