  • In this episode of Seymour’s Studio, Kevin explains the differences between the 805 and Forza Overdrive pedals, and showcases the two stomp-boxes in a variety of classic applications - as a standalone overdrive pedal in front of a clean amp, as a clean boost, and in front of an already overdriven amplifier - to help you decide which Seymour Duncan overdrive pedal is right for you… maybe it’s both!
    The 805 Overdrive:
The 805 Overdrive is voiced to help your guitar cut through a band mix, as it naturally shaves off bass and treble frequencies to tighten the low-end and sweeten the high-end, leaving you with a ferocious focused mid-range. The 805 is highly versatile, with an expansive gain range and additional three-band active EQ. The 805’s gain range extends from 8dB to 36dB, allowing for a wide range of overdrive options from mild boost to saturated lead gain. The active EQ allows players to fine-tune all elements of the low, mid, and high-end frequencies.
    The Forza Overdrive:
Forza is a full-range, highly adjustable and transparent overdrive for players who want more gain and sustain without sacrificing the natural voice of their guitar and amp. While many overdrive pedals, like the 805, emphasize particular frequencies, Forza if voiced across a balanced frequency spectrum, so it sounds just as good through a clean channel or enhancing an already overdriven amp. In addition to offering between 11dB and 37dB of available gain, there’s a three-band active EQ for controlling the lows, mids, and high-end.

Thank you for playing the same thing on each pedal! So much easier to compare!

The chip in a TS style circuit has nothing to do with the EQ curve. You can swap out ICs and it will still have that mid hump.

Will Moore yep, it’s the high pass followed by the low pass that gives the hump

Hi Will! This is Kevin from Seymour Duncan. Thank you for checking out the video, and for your insight here. You are totally correct. The 808 chip is not what defines the mid-focused voicing of the 805 Overdrive. I misspoke and intended to suggest that the the pedal's mid-hump is a classic characteristic of an 808-style pedal, not a fundamental characteristic of the chip itself. Thanks again for tuning in, and for your comments and insight here Will!

Plus the 805 doesn't have the JRC4558D chip. It has the MC33178.
Chips aside, I love my 805, but it's still its own thing compared to my TS808. Kind of in the same family, though.

Good video. But would it kill you to tune the guitars?

0:42 It has been proven countless times by boutique pedal builders that those chips do not affect the overall sound of the pedal.

I just don't like diode /IC clipping. I'd rather have FET's cascading into each other setup like a tube amp. Let's face it, TS9 type pedals are 70's technology and even though they say "Tube", they don't sound like or act like a valve(tube)... You should try an Origin "Revival Drive" if you want a pedal that sounds/like an amp breaking up!
BTW, both pedals do sound very good for what they are!

      The IC doesn't clip... 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂

@officialmetalwill if you slam it with a hot enough signal it definitely will!

The 805 sounds much better in the band mix, it cuts through very nicely 👍🏼

Another dirt driver...with EQ....that is why we have controls on amps and the guitar...anyway there ya go...

I build tube amps for fun, use one tone approach just for that, no signal load, adjust 'tone' with guitar at will...it is in the hands anyway, but certainly bass/treble doesn't need to be extreme...adjust the pickup closer to the strings, lots of other tricks to keep that signal unloaded and wide open...hump that!@!
