The 80s are just chock full of legendary and nostalgic cards indeed! Every last one of them made the decade what it was no matter the player!
👍
I agree that it is one of, if not THE most iconic card of the 80’s!! One of my friends had one and I was so jealous. Quick story. I was a poor kid growing up, but I loved baseball cards. One of my friends had a Beckett (which I had never heard of), and I saw the 1984 Donruss Mattingly was worth $60. Well, I had one!!! I was so excited. I was going to sell that card and buy everything I ever wanted!! I sprinted home and got mine and ran to my LCS to pick up my riches. Well, my Mattingly would have graded a 1 or maybe the dreaded “authentic”. It was almost round, and you could barely make out Donny’s face, but I didn’t know what “mint” meant, so I thought it was worth $60. To shorten the story, the guy gave me $4 in trade and I walked out with 7-8 cards I don’t even remember. I wish I would’ve kept the Mattingly, but I think about that story all the time.
Lol, dude that is a sad story! I hope you have since replaced your Donny Baseball card!
I’m sorry, I didn’t want my story to be sad, but rather, I wanted it to be funny. I haven’t gotten a Donny baseball rookie card in the years since, but that’s only because by the time I could afford one, I only collected Ryne Sandberg cards. I have TONS of his cards, so I’m a happy collector!! Now, in my later years, I’ve gravitated towards basketball. The 86 Jordan is my now “84 Mattingly”, “86 Canseco”, “89 Griffey” holy grail. Although, I wish a PSA 1 was “only” 60 bucks!!! Haha!!
The 87 Topps Mcgwire and 87 Fleer Will Clark was iconic too but that 86 Donruss Canseco is king because of the Rated Rookie logo. My first baseball glove that I needed to play in little league had a manufactured autograph of Ryne Sandberg in the palm and I had no idea who he was lol.
Awesome story! Poor Ryno.
The Mattingly and Griffey are my favorites
Maybe a video for another time to list ALL the big ones from the 80's.
Jose Canseco is arguably one of the biggest "what if" stories I have seen in baseball. You could make the argument that from 1986-1991, Canseco was the best player in baseball- Two HR titles, an MVP, solid BA, Rookie of the Year, credible defense, first 40/40 player in history. He was on a clear Hall of Dame trajectory.
Then he fell off the rails in 1992 and though still a solid player, he never reached that same level.
Injuries and immaturity derailed a Hall of Fame career.
@@DaDitka "Injuries and immaturity". I think you summed up his downfall. Great comment. Thank you!
My cousin used to have a 1986 donruss Jose canseco card.
It's a great one! You can be that guy who has one too!
It’s not up there. It’s not in the top 50. Since none of these cards are worth anything, it’s all about personal choices though!
@johng.4711 I agree about preference. This card had a huge impact on the hobby regardless of disappointing current value. 😔
