- In the 2000s, she was known for appearing in films like Elf, (500) Days of Summer, and Yes Man, and for most of the 2010s, she played Jess Day on New Girl. But since her sitcom went off the air, we haven’t been hearing as much from Zooey Deschanel.
She’s had a lot of success in Hollywood over the years, but she’s always struggled with being typecast, and her role on New Girl may have only served to make her more pigeonholed into quirky roles. Let’s take a look at the real reason why Hollywood won’t cast Zooey Deschanel anymore.

I agree. They say "Hollywood won't cast her/him anymore!", then go on to list all of the things they've been cast in recently. What they're talking about are big-budget leading roles, and that's not the same thing.

500 days was the anti-manic pixie dream girl. Even in the end, she said to him that he put her up on this pedestal and that wasn't who she really was.
It would be interesting to see her do a 180 and show up in a horror film, but not as the damsel in distress, but rather a darker part that plays off her perceived persona.

She got married and had 2 kids while filming new girl. So I’m sure she wanted to spend time with her family. She did a live version of beauty in the beast in LA 8 months ago and did a small tour for her band she & him.

I believe her to be physically beautiful, but ageism for women in Hollywood is very difficult to overcome. I suspect that will play a part of seeing her perform in fewer roles, that and having small children/young family to balance out with work as well.
I don't think her problem is ageism. I think it's because she plays roles that are made for 25 year old actresses. She put herself into a box, and fans often don't like to see people change.

The first time I'd heard of and seen Zooey Deschanel was in the miniseries "Tin Man" (a different telling of The Wizard of Oz). What a beauty! I have only sporadically seen some of her other work, and loved it when she appeared alongside sister Emily Deschanel in an episode or two of the series Bones, in which Emily was the series lead.

Hollywood has a real problem with casting real people. This woman is smart, talented, authentic and way too good for t.v. Her voice is steeped in power and sensuality. Her children are seriously lucky to have her for a mother, and she's not done yet. She's an absolutely gorgeous near 40, and when she's done raising her children, she will be a natural for mature female roles, which require a truly mature woman. With two small kids to mother, I rather doubt that she's getting a rest and a little time off. Don't count her out; this is one truly self actualizing woman. BTW: I would absolutely love to meet her mother, because she raised two totally wonderful women.

@Slevin You can see in the start of the movie when she is getting the phone out of her bag, the script for her lines at same time. This means that M.Night was giving them all lines as they went along because I guess he wanted the acting to either be shit or like more natural in a sort of way.

I think some Zooey fans are taking this video too personally. Look at her IMDB. The fact that the little work she has done (outside New Girl) is consistently small roles/flops implies she wants to work but can't land great roles. A manic pixie girl is supposed help the main man develop and guide him in his life. Getting the main character to do things they wouldn’t do unless someone encouraged them. She’s NOT a Manic Pixie Girl in 500 Days Of Summer. Joseph Gordon-Levitt even explained how Tom was this guy who developed an delusional obsession over this girl. Time after time in the movie Summer says she doesn’t want anything serious. She even has a boyfriend back home. Toms sister even say “Just because some girl likes the same bizarre crap you do that doesn’t make her your soul mate.” . Joesph even says the way his character is unhealthy. Also that it’s this “attitude of he wants you so bad, seems so attractive to some young people “ “You are falling in love with the idea of the person , not the actual person”. With all that being said she broke his heart and that is clearly not what a manic pixie girl is. At the end Tom is the one who decides to build a portfolio and get his career on track.
