Only if she can learn to remain detached in her feelings and not raise the squirrel as she did this one. Way to many rehabers over expose the animal to human contact. It jeopardizes their ability to be released which is the actual purpose of being a wildlife rehaber. I've also seem rehabers who can't maintain some level of detachment end up in a hoarder like situation because they can't euthanize a wild animal that is non releasable. It's one thing when you've got the money & appropriate space for a few "educational" animals who couldn't be released. But when you're a rehaber, within a year you'll run into blind squirrels, possums who've lost their tail, animals that have seizures etc. and you'll bury yourself trying to save them all.
My brother saved a baby squirrel and named her Susie. He bought her a castle of a cage and when she was old enough he took her to a friend’s farm where she lived happily ever after. He loved that little girl so much. Sweet for a grumpy old guy.
I had a neighbor that rescued a baby squirrel. After a year, she wanted to spend time outside but came in for meals. Soon she had babies and her instincts to forage didnt kick in and the neighbor stopped feeding her unless the squirrel would do tricks for her. The squirrel disappeared for a few days, probably trying to find food. She came back a few days later, very skinny. Again the neighbor wouldn't feed her unless the mama would do a trick. I imagine in desperation and frustration for her babies, the squirrel bit her. Rather than the neighbor understanding things had changed for the squirrel now being a mother, she took it personal and stopped feeding the poor mama. Of course I took over just leaving little bits of fruits and nuts out for the mama without her having to make contact with me. I still see her occasionally and she is completely wild now...thank you Mother Nature!! Moral of the story....when you make a commitment, it is lifetime for them, not you. If you can't help them selflessly, find someone that can. It took alot of self restraint but that neighbor is still alive today...lol

I too became a squirrel rehabber by the seat of my pants! I learned how to care/feed/hydrate them from other rehabbers. It is the most REWARDING experience. Thank God I was there a found 2 very dehydrated babies. I love squirrels so very much. I have saved a number of baby squirrels. When they were strong enough I then gave them to another Rehabber who will released them when they become adults.
I love Fern and my hilarious adorable outdoor squirrels that i feed and sit with in the sun. They trust me but if theres a loud noise or another human or animal approaches they fly up to their nests for safety and then come back down when the coast is clear🥰🥰🥰
I am feeding a small colony of squirrels. They keep clear of me, but a tiny bit less as the weeks go by. They are the "introduced" North American grey variety, often despised because they are bigger than the UK native red variety and have become the standard variety in most areas. Scottish red squirrels are holding out. Now I get to see grey squirrels a little closer up I can see they are beautiful animals. For me helping any animal survive Winter is very satisfying. More importantly, surviving Winter is even more satisfying for the animal... Please do not release adopted wild animals unless you are sure they have acquired their species' survival and social skills. Some "cute" wild animals can reject harshly newcomers, particularly newcomers whose behaviour designates them as "different". Killing any animal because it has experienced abuse or misfortune is despicable. Leaving them to die, lonely and neglected is terrible. Why some vets are so eager to euthanise puzzles me...
@@williamjordan5554 Thanks. My knowledge of squirrels is basic. I mainly know they should be hibernating now, so must have a serious need of good food. A chance encounter when returning from a visit to my doctor...
100% agree. Vets like all other doctors are supppsed to do no harm. Well it's harmful for animals to be put to death unnecessarily. The only time an animal should be euthanized is if it is extremely ill with no chance of recovery or if it has a deadly contagious disease. We have to take care of animals and each other. Animals make the world a much better place for all of us & can teach us much about ourselves, as well as how to overcome obstacles & unconditional love.
in my area there is lots of feral cats/kittens i live in a poor backwoods state we only have a few animal rescues n they stay booked so if i find one i try to TnR the ones i can but what breaks my heart the most is i have found 1 kitten so loveable but needed vet care i hav no money but i took it to the vet anyways n begged them to at least test the kitten see what’s wrong n i would tak it home n help it best i could however the vet said no we can’t help the cat for free but we can humanly put it to sleep wtf how is that humanly!!! A neighbor knowing i try help ferals when i can brought me a beautiful kitten that was attacked by 6 small dogs the cat wasn’t seriously injured but was bleeding, ears full of mud, and had severe anxiety i knee going to the vet was out so i did what i could to help her it’s been 2 months she’s doing great but anxiety n ptsd is bad she can’t go back outside at all so i’m hoping to adopt her to a loving home!!! 2 weeks ago my heart was breaking i head a cat crying i called it over n to my horror this cat had been attacked by a raccoon it was bad n infected i called vet begging for help for this sweet hurting cat they told me they would put it to sleep or i could pay 1,000s i hav no money!! i tried trap the cat everyday for a week when it came to eat but he hasn’t came back he may hav died which is so sad i know he’s in a better place n at least i got to feed him but it makes me so mad how selfish n greedy vet docs can be i mean isn’t that y God gifted u with the ability to become a vet to help His animals? i know a vet has be paid but they not only triple charge u but they will let an animal suffer b4 helping it n that to me is jus wrong!!! i will continue to help ferals n TnR but it breaks my heart i can’t do more for the ones who need it!!!!! FYI with the last cat i called every rescue, animal organizations n etc but not one was willing to help this cat!!!

I’ve raised and released a boy and a girl squirrel. The female was definitely friendlier, but he was also a great squirrel, and still comes around. The female I had to give to a Rehabber because I had to go away. I regret doing it I should’ve just let her go in the backyard. She would’ve been fine, I realize that. I promised myself I’d never do that again because she was very mean to me and wouldn’t let me go see my squirrel even once, saying, what do you think she’s going to do run to you?….so mean. I had a blast with Buddy though and built a $500 hutch outback that he was in for three weeks for the transition to being an outdoor squirrel….could not wait to get out but I love looking at it in the backyard and I hope to have another rescue someday. I hope everything went well with this one you have. You are right…is it is extremely rewarding to do that. Love you for your kindness:)🥰

How sweet! I too have rehabbed a few wild animals that crossed my path. There is no greater love than that of an animal! Congratulations on your nearly new best friend. Best of luck to you 💞
Ohhhh my gosh!! Fern is SOOOO adorable!!😍 I love her!!🥰💝🐿️🐾 And the woman who rescued her is amazing! I, too, became a wildlife rehabber by default. I have rescued and raised 10 squirrels so far since early 2013. I released 7 of them back into the wild when they were ready, but 3 of them were non releasable due to various issues so I kept them. The one I have now is just over 6 months old, and she is non releasable. Having a baby squirrel is like having a new born human baby. Depending on a squirrel's age, you really do have to feed them formula every 2 to 4 hours, around the clock. Squirrels living in captivity require a specialized diet so they don't get metabolic bone disease and die. Baby squirrels are very sweet. But at about 9 months old they start to "wild up" and want to go out, back into the wild, even the non releasable ones. Once they reach a year old they are sometimes very bratty and difficult for 2 to 3 years, and then they calm down and go back to being sweet again. Squirrels really are a one person animal. They usually only bond with the one person who rescued them and takes care of them the most. Like Fern, they will just tolerate other people and be sweet and loving with their rescuer care giver, but some squirrels will even attack other people.😱 And even when you give them plenty of hard things to chew on, they will still chew up your house and things inside your house. They also get into everything so you can't leave them alone and unattended for one second. Even having a grown squirrel is like having a toddler for the rest of the squirrel's life.🤣 Taking care of a squirrel, no matter what their age, is challenging and hard work. But it is so beyond worth it!💖 I am so glad Fern got rescued and is in the care of this loving, phenomenal lady!!💞🐿️🐾
Sounds like she just became the wildlife rehabilitater in here area now. Animals are the best!

I made them warm nesting boxes and feed and water them nightly. I felt so broken hearted today. I came home from work to see one of the 12 squirrels was hit on the road. I pretty much have a heart attack every time they would take nuts and run across the road. This was the 1st to get hit in the last 8 months. Guess it was bound to happen sooner or later but not a great Valentine's day. I'm just sick about it. I hope it wasn't the one that ate from my hand. 😭
@@critterallywithjohnernest. I’m sorry, it’s Heartbreaking when they get run over. You sound like a kind soul. It was really nice of you to do that for the Opossums. Can you imagine if we lived near each other it would be a zoo, lol.
@@shellyrae777 thank you for the kind words. I shouldn't get so attached to them but it is hard not to. Especially when you start to have a trusting bond with them. It takes a very long time to get it and then it's gone in an instant. Maybe we live close by, who knows? I live in Fond du lac Wisconsin. I live jn the city but with all the animals here you would think it's the country. Take care. 😊
Lovely story, so glad you took care of Fern. Squirrels are wonderful animals. Rodents get a bad wrap as they can be so intelligent and sweet.
what a cutie! you two were destined to be together!
Bless you it's a mammoth task.i love squirrels feed them every day.so cheeky + bright.you get very attached .I hate the way people are cruel to all animals.they are all amazing + should be well looked after .but sadly it doesn't happen I hope you have her for a long time love to you both.

🤧 aww she's so gorgeous, bless you for saving her, great video thanks 💖😁
Squirrels 🐿 are the best! Fern has the best life. Hopefully, she’ll enjoy outside on her harness, and others won’t look at ya like WTH 🤦♀️ hahaha 🤣
Beautiful squirrel. Beautiful human. Beautiful story. Thanks.
Thank you very much for the pleasure. ❤️
Kudos to the creators of this video! 👍 How would you rate my work?
Lucky little squirrel was in the right tree when she fell!!
What a heartwarming story. How fun for u. One lucky lil critter. Best life ever for Fern. Bet she'll hav a much longer life with u than n the wild. Thx for sharing this❤
I too became a squirrel rehabber by the seat of my pants!
C'mon how could you refuse those eye's, what a beautiful story. So glad she's living a good life even after her rough start... ❤️🙏🌹

Probably "Eastern Gray" squirrels.
The description killed me 😂😂
What a wonderful lady, and her little fur baby is adorable ❤️
That woman did a wonderful thing by taking in that cute little squirrel. May they have many happy memories years together!
Fern is so very adorable and such a loving companion to her lovely adopted Mom 💞💞💞💞
This story is so amazing. God bless this woman. That’s so amazing that she opened her eyes and saw you first thing. ❤
Fern you little cutie! What a beautiful human being this lady is ♥️
Sadly a channel named “lol” stole your comment, they just flipped the 2 parts of the message.
Such a cute little squirrel. I love videos like this, it reminds me that not all of the human race sucks.
Your the only mama she's ever known. She's beautiful.
So squirrels teeth are just like Bunnies!! Never stop growing…always be chewing ❤❤❤
I honestly LOVE SQUIRRELS. They are so cute and happy.
They are very loving creatures. I raised 3 orphans. 2 in the Bronx and 1 up Rockland County, I loved doing it and was lucky enough to be able to release them in the wild by sending them up the trees they fell from. All 3 did fine I kept an eye on them for a couple of weeks but had any circumstance caused me to have to keep them I would have felt a very lucky guy. Good for ou o be able to keep her all her life. She's a very fortunate squirrel, has the life of Reilly! Enjoy natures gift to you!!
Great little buddy. What happens at vet appointments? Fern is so healthy. Great mom. Feed the birds & squirrels in winter at a safe place!
Gina and Fern are both INCREDIBLE.
I smiled all throughout this. Thank you for being you, and my best wishes for a long and happy life together from here in Turkiye. :-)

God bless you for taking in and loving this little creature.
I like how people who rescue wild animals like these tell themselves they are doing it for the animal and are being like benevolent which you know I’ve done it and all but really we get so much more out of it than they do.
Thank you for taking care of the squirrel 🐿️ that fell out of the 🎄, I know it took a lot of work and dedication. You are a real angel and the squirrel 🐿️ is soooo cute. Bless 💞 u both. Wishing you much joy and happiness for a long time.

What a blessing to be experiencing her. ❤
ANY animal that allows anyone to touch, rub, pet, etc. their belly, is offering up their soft belly TRUSTS that person..... BUT, never do anything to lose their trust.... Wonderful gift between a human & animal. ♥️♥️♥️
She. Is absolutely gorgeous. I love her giant nose. God bless you, the wonderful woman you are, for seeing that all animals lives are precious. Thank you.
There's something so sweet when an animal loves you!
Aawww, Fern is precious. Thank you for being devoted to her and meeting her needs. Your story is an inspiration.
👍🙏🤗😍you're such a kind woman to do everything for this little sweet life - a big hug to you both from NL/europe 💋 nina P.S: I had do the same just because I love animals so much.....

What a sweet little girl! 💕
