You know how when you first hear a song that you love, you play it so much that it gets old really quick? The chorus loses its catchiness and so on. Well for whatever reason, I’ve never gotten tired of this song, ever. I can listen to that chorus forever. One of the few songs I can say that about.
I think it doesn't get old because of it's simplicity. The sound editing on the vocal track is subtle enough to not make it sound very edited, but it gives it that extra edge, and he also uses a very relaxed and controlled voice, it's not so show-off-y... And the added vocals on 'yeah yeah yeah' are just perfect.

I actually produced this music video. What a fun job that was! We shot for two long days in the ballroom of an old Los Angeles hotel. I can’t recall the name. The dimly lit room and the one main source-light throughout the video, is as a result of us not having enough money in our budget to properly light the entire room. It was very large and would have taken too many lights and manpower to properly light the entire room. Director Paul Hunter, had the brilliant idea of placing one light on our film camera along with minimal lights in the background (yes, we shot in 35mm back then). This would mimic a home VHS film shoot and serve as the eye of a voyeur. The vertical, tri-colored lines were added during the edit and served to enhance the overall psychedelic feel of the video. (Harvey White was our editor and happens to be Mega-Director Hype Williams’ cousin) Back then, I produced about 200 videos over a seven year period and this was definitely in my top three most enjoyable and satisfying jobs (projects). Now I produce mostly big-box commercials. Man, I was so lucky...
J L Not really. It wasn’t Lenny’s crew. The record company hired the director (Paul Hunter), and I used to produce 95% of his videos out of the production company (HSI Productions). They give us a finite budget and we had to work within that amount. In this case, we didn’t have enough to light the entire room, since that would have probably cost about $40-50k additional, when you factor in the extra grips (+3 guys) and electricians (+3 guys) and two extra days of work for them to help set-up and strike the lights and monstrous amount of electrical cable, the day before and after the shoot. These guys make about $600 for a ten hour work day. Add payroll taxes and overtime and each person eventually costs about $1100-$1200 per day (we’d typically work 14-16 hours). And, we already had six electricians and six grips working. Oh, we’d also have to pay for the location rental and parking (big $$ in downtown Los Angeles) for an extra two days if we did this and downtown locations tend to be very expensive. This was actually pretty common budgeting on videos back then. Rap acts like Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott would spend tons of cash on their videos and acts like Deftones and U2, would wisely spend less. Maybe they didn’t need the publicity to sell records? Anyway, that’s what happened. I know about the budgets for the above names, because at one time or another, I produced music videos for them. I actually recall a conversation with Busta Rhymes, when I suggested that he spend less on his next video. I don’t recall if he took my advice. His videos from the heyday of music videos, would cost almost two-million dollars EACH. Hope this makes sense... I JUST RE-READ THIS IN SEPTEMBER 2024. @@marcellaoreilly2730 Can’t wait to break free from this seemingly endless journey of experiencing what is only superficially and temporarily “meaningful” called life. Hopefully after death, the imprisoned soul is able to finally soar freely in eternal peace and relief from the internally mundane suffering of having to live through this temporary yet nonsensical existence. Not sure if you or anyone else feel and think the same as I do.
@@annc7739 we are all perfect the way God made us it's just a temporary existence as you said. It's a test that we are all being put through. Just keep strong and keep persevering and always be thankful for the small things xx

Jajaj
how do you understand this XD
One of the classic songs of all time! Well done Lenny!
first time hearing this on the radio I honestly thought it was RHCP the bass sounds like flea and the chorus just like Anthony's voice
I remember hearing on a TV ad a few weeks before it came out and in my teenage mind I thought it was Anthrax. Mainly due to the weird melody on the fly away of the chorus.
Totally agree!
Who 2024 ? ❤
Just a classic riff and hook, and perfectly simple music video. Timeless.
Lenny Kravitz Fly Away is older than UA-cam... that's unbelievable...seem like yesterday!
I've been looking for this song for years and only remembered a few lyrics and could never find it. I remember listenning to this song in the car with my dad. It's nostalgic to me
this is has been my dads ringtone for last 9 years of my life and the beginning of this song is what I have to hear everyday, I wish I was joking.
