- Zach's back with a few classics from Roland, the SH-101, SH-09, and SH-2. The question of the week is: vintage analog monophonic synths... are they worth it? With so many options available today across digital/analog, vintage/new, monophonic/polyphonic, do these classic synths from the 70's and 80's still have a role in modern music making? Roland's 70s synth have a raw, aggressive sound, very warm and overdriven. Nick Batt would be in heaven with these, as the PWM is sooo phat on these early synths!
I own an SH 02, and it is a beast. Paid a high price for it, but it is worth it. It is sonically beautiful and inspiring
Just ordered an SH-2 today, glad to see this video.
The plugout models of the SH-2 and SH-101 for the System-1 are pretty good as well.
The 09 was my first analog synth roundabout 2006. I've owned two of them now and swear by it hell or high water.
It was my first one too, until it blew a fuse two days later. I wouldn't swear by it

I've had SH101! Excellent synth! Miss it
I have an SH2, which to begin with felt like a pretty intimidating, raw (often ugly) noise maker which you could only work on in short bursts. However after years of gradually learning what it can actually do, experimenting, putting it through magnetic tape echo and the like, I now feel I can do anything with it. A absolutely fascinating instrument.
An, as yet unfulfilled fantasy was to hook it up a 101 for the appeggiator, and the 09 for an extra oscillator to have them all running through the SH2.
SH2 is my dream synth. Every time I have money, I can't find one for sale. When I'm broke, they're for sale everywhere. :/

@@dbfhorses I'm just a mega nerd when it comes to synths and have spent a truly ridiculous amount of time studying up on them and fantasizing about owning various ones. I really like what I own now, as well as others I've owned in the past, but there's 2 analogs that I have always wanted but never have had the chance to get for one reason or another. The Roland SH-2 and the Yamaha CS-30 are two synths that I desperately want to own one day. There's something about the sonic character of each of them that speaks to me and suits the kind of music that I like to make. I've owned a SH-101 in the past and while it is pretty cool, it just doesn't have the sonic balls of the SH-2. The SH-2 is so fat, so aggressive... it's absolutely perfect. I have the Behringer MS-1 and it's pretty great, especially for the money, but it's not coming close to the SH-2.
@@VincentsVideoVisions Yeah, the SH2's an incredible hands on sound laboratory really. I never really see a better one.
I'd like to own a Prophet V, an Oberheim OBxA, an Oscar, and that Korg one, (and just one digital synth- maybe a Nord) if money were no object.
The only other synth I've had was a Sequential Circuits 6-Trak...which was a hybrid, DCF, digi control piece of crap compared to the SH2
@@VincentsVideoVisions The 101's' more generic sounding than the 2, and really, I can't be doing with anything that only has one proper oscillator. What's the point of just one measly oscillator and a sub oscillator??! Hence why I found the Pro One underwhelming. I've been spoilt.

The Behringer wasn't convincing at first in my opinion. I could immediately tell the raw unfiltered oscillator didn't have the bite that the real 101 had...and then you engaged the filter! I have to say, they NAILED the 101's filter (the best analogue filter ever...sorry, Moog). Especially when the resonance was cranked and you brought the cutoff right down, it didn't get muddy or blow up any speakers. It just stayed totally fat. Might just have to pick one of these up.
Woah! Oscillator sync mod is great on SH-2 starting at 14:39. First time I hear it. Need to get this mod on mine.👌
Sh-2 does not have Osc sync, at least my one doesn't

I would love the SH02. I could hear the differences in thickness between them but the others were not quite there. You could take the Arturia Minibrute and run it through some guitar overdrive and and phaser pedals and Bob's your uncle. VSTs just do not cut it for me as I grew up hearing the original sounds in real time.
Could you make a comparison video between the Minibrute and the SH-2? I think lots of people will be interested, is a really requested video

I find the Matrixbrute can sound pretty similar to the Sh-2. Although the sub-oscillator tone is a bit differnet, but overall woody tone and character is in the ballpark.
The only man who thinks that 101 warmer than sh2). And there is no question, vintage roland's mono's are better sounding than 99,9% modern analogue mono's period
SH5 and SH7 are the real synths SH1000 was the first one in 73, followed by the SH2000. How about a Video of the Roland System 100 and 100m

I just won a Roland SH-3 at auction. Not the SH-3A, but an actual SH-3. No power switch or button. The biggest problem with old gear is repair.

I compared an ms1 to an sh-101 in person and they sound identical. Knob/slider position have to be set by ear, but the sound is there.

The 101 has a micro computer it's somewhat digital compared to the others. Thus the cleaner sound
