    Hanks for the great video. I am new to the game, less than a week. I have been struggling with mechs and what load out to take. I was not making much xp or doing much damage. Your suggestion of the Hellbringer was perfect. I have play about a dozen games in mine and I love it. I followed your build exactly and it is fantastic. I now make double the c bills in the Hellbringer than I do in my +30% mechs. So you now have a very grateful and now faithful subscriber to your channel. Going back through all your older videos now. Thanks mechwarrior!

    So with the release of MW5: Mercs looming I started contemplating picking MWO again. I was a Founder and for some reason I bounced off MWO. I tried it off and on again never feeling comfortable going beyond my founding mechs. I saw this guide, did what you said and have been loving the game ever since. Like Schreibicus said, you not only explained what, but the why too. Thank you very much and I hope you continue to make videos.
    Edit: Spelling and grammar issue.

    Due to changes in heatsink dissipation values, I recommend now removing the targeting computer on each build for an extra DHS.
    There's no difference which Hellbringer variant you use for the build. I would choose the PRIME variant because it gives you the PRIME LT omnipod, the ECM and 3x ERMLs which you need for this build.

      There are a few comments earlier about what would be a good beginner IS mech. I'll probably talk about something related to that in a future video. I know there are some who don't care about spending more CBills and not necessarily having their mech be futureproof.

    Great video. As someone who likes to play around with different loadouts, I find the skill tree to be a hindrance. I think it's just to force you into buying a different variant of your mech. I'd like to see a system implemented in which the "skill" upgrades apply to the weapons, not the mech. That way, they can be moved to different mechs in your fleet.

    I just happened to switch out my SCR laser vomit build to 1ERLL/6ERML, it's got a great alpha and heat efficiency. I can understand why you'd drop a medium and then run it on a HBR - it's got the slots to run way more DHS. This should be quite easy to handle for a new player.
    Thank you for taking the time to do this.
    Personally I wouldn't recommend ECM mechs to a beginner since they're going to be really forgiving with bad positioning but I understand that it would allow players to just ease into the game.

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  6 років тому

      The way I thought about it is that the starter build is uses only the available high mounts and not the arms and it's very manageable heat wise. You can do two straight alphas without any heat skills. Then the ECM is a good way to ease into MWO. I forgot to mention in this video but I did the last one, LRMs are huge in the lower tiers so it's another way ECM helps people make a more gentle entry into the game.

  • @ThePereubu1710
    @ThePereubu1710 6 років тому

    Nice guide. I really liked your comment about ECM; it is no longer the "Iwin button" it once was but it still a useful assistance for newer players. I agree that the Hellbringer is still the best starter mech but I just wanted to add that if someone really wants to start as an Inner Sphere pilot, the Bushwacker (whilst not as easy to use in general) comes fully upgraded with a very useful, and expensive, XL engine and gives a great return on investment as it's "straight out of the box" playable.

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  6 років тому

      IMO the Bushwackers should use LFEs. Part of their tankiness comes from the fact that usualy you have to destroy the arms to get to the STs, then the ST to get to to CT. With XL half of that tankiness is gone. It's still OKish with XL, just not as tough.
      I'll do an IS version of this video I think but it'll probably be a heavy as well. There are a couple of suggestions already for candidates :)

    Played a long time before actually using the hellbringer they gave me. More forgiving on movement in that you wont get focused down as much for mistakes. Or lets you play harder when you get the right positions.
    Scores are definitely better than my averages and peaks with this mech.
    I run a er medium in the right arm and three in the left torso with the ecm. A er large in the head and a large pulse in the right torso.

I do not know if you have posted any other videos or information but I like to know if you have a list of Pros and Cons for each Mech. Hey, welcome to MWO. I don't do a ton of videos for new players but I suggest checking out the MWO strategy guides playlist for more videos that teach you generally how to play the game ua-cam.com/play/PLwqk5uyksy_Of_Kna93mP0WdNi8XzxPV7.html
      Other than that my videos go through individual chassis one by one and talk about the pros and cons of each. Feel free to ask any questions.
      Btw, the Highlander isn't a very good mech in MWO unfortunately. If you want a good IS beginner mech, try the Warhammer WHM-6R. I might do a video on this chassis later on.

    Personally
    The phoenix hawk 2 is a great mech to start off in; 6med lasers, ECM, AMS, jump jets, and good speed.
    In a team based game its best to learn how to be a team player. You lack only a little in damage but you are covering your team while being very mobile.
    But my very first mech was a ebon jaguar , and whats great about that is it can have multiple working load outs to see what weapons you do and don't like.
    So in summary: Get a mech that is either a team support, or a jack of all trades
    (me specifically phoenix hawk 2/ebon jaguar)

    As a player who got back into the game last month after a massive break I forgot that I had a Jenner and Crab 20. Yes I had to do a little research and farming to make it good for a time. I ran 2 light ppcs and 3 medium lazers. That served me well for a long time before I went to the zombie build. That I massively enjoy due to survivability.
    Yes the hellbringer is good but it is down to what the player enjoys. For example I adore the King Crab due to the raw power it can possess. Would I recommend it to a new player? No. I say that because I dont know how the new player plays and likes. A new player could take an advanced mech and run wild for a while.

  • @johnmoore8599
    @johnmoore8599 6 років тому

    Nice update. I think one of the trial mechs used to be a HBR with the 2xLPL build,+ ER-MLs, though it might be gone now. That is a vicious loadout. The only downside to the HBR is keeping your left torso intact. People learn to defang a HBR by blowing off that torso quickly. With Heavy -LLs, you have to face the enemy a bit longer, which makes it easier to lose that torso if you are caught in the open. So, I can see why the LPLs are probably a better choice for the HBR. It's easy to choose the heavy lasers over the pulse lasers because on paper, the heavies put out so much damage. But, heavy lasers imply a longer face time due to burn duration and they have a long cooldown. This makes them a bad choice for new players.

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  6 років тому

      Yes HLLs are not only longer (more face time) but also higher heat. You really have to measure the heat well and it's not as incremental as LPL or ERLL.
      The trial Hellbringer is a bit outdated for a new player experience, but still usable. When it was designed, there was no HBR-P so you still had most of your weapons left-stacked. Now if you get the LT destroyed, you still have at least 2xERLL+1xERML or 1xERLL + 2xERML depending on how you build it. You're right though, it's still a downside, but it wasn't as bad as it was before.

  • @BassRacerx
    @BassRacerx 6 років тому

    timberwolf prime is a very good newbie friendly mech. a bit on the expensive side but you don't really have to change much on the mech once you buy it. just ditch the machine guns for extra LRM ammo and some extra heat sinks. . this is the mech that I consistently do well will every game lots of cbill potential. Also while this is a "free to play" game having premium bonus for the first 1-3 months can help your progression SO much because you won't be performing very well until you learn the game so the xp bonus and cbill bonus really helps!

    I used to play this game a long time ago. I might still have an account and after playing the recent Battlemech game and reading some novels, I might try this game out. What is it's current state at? Is it a toxic player base? Does the game still have a long time in play ability left in it or is it soon going to be taken down?

      It's a free-to-play game so there's no consequence to trying it out again. The player base is usually more mature than in most other online games and you'll find people to be generally helpful, especially if you tell your team you're just coming back to the game after awhile

    What I don't get (as one who hasn't bought his first mech yet) is that the Hellbringer HBR-A, the mech in the video, is mounting 5 energy weapons, while in the in-game storem the HBR-A variation is listed with 3 Ballistic, 3 Energy and 2 Missil slots - are those merly guidlines, or what the mech is pre-eqipped with?

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  5 років тому +2

      The Hellbringer is a type of omnimech. This means its components - head, left and right torsos, left and right arms, left and right legs, can be swapped out for different "versions" which are called omnipods. The only component that can't be swapped is the center torso. The Hellbringer has 6 distinct variants, so for example if you buy the HBR-A, you can swap out the left torso that came with the mech for the HBR-PRIME's left torso omnipod and keep the remaining HBR-A omnipods. That's what's done here. Go to 6:20 and you'll see we're starting with an HBR-PRIME (you know this because its center torso is the HBR-PRIME CT), replace the head with the -A, and the right torso with the -P.
      I go through the entire purchase and replacement process in my 2016 version of this video here ua-cam.com/video/VT3hzjtgIms/v-deo.html In that video I'm running a different build but you can see how omnipods can be replaced.

    • @FuzzyNova
      @FuzzyNova 4 роки тому

      Yeah basically You can Frankenstein any Onnimech to have whatever Hardpoints you want from the available Omnipods for whatever variant you buy. Which is great in some cases like you may only have to buy one Hellbringer, or One Night Gyr. Instead if buying a different Hellbringer or Night Gyr Variant you could just buy the Omnipods instead. Now the only downside to this is that the original CT Omnipod stays in the mech meaning you won't have the extra quirks or "skills" it comes with if you decide to Frankenstein it. And you are stuck with the engine it comes with It's fun to mess around with.
      Then you have hero mechs and special Mechs that Are the only other Omnipods that you can't just buy from the store. If your looking for a good Onnimech I would recommend the night gyr. Quad ballistics at least. Quad UAC 5s. Few Energy. Hell you don't even have to use energy it's low alpha but racks up so much damage if you keep firing on your targets at optimal range.

    So I'm curious, during the initial build its mentioned that we should buy a prime variant, and then in the later build the HBR-A is shown instead. I'm fairly new, and have yet to mess with the skill tree. Does this mean I should save all my skillpoints except for the inital ECM ones, until I can get an A variant instead of using them on the prime? Or can the points be shifted from prime to the A?

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  5 років тому +1

      For this build there's no difference between the A and the PRIME variants. You just use the torso and head omnipods as shown in the video. I think I used the PRIME earlier on because that was what was available on the account at the time. I should clarify this, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

    I’m new started last night and tried the trial Hellbringer and I thought it was good. Of all the trial mech I had my best outcome in my 25 cadet matches with the Quickdraw. At least for me I didn’t get targeted as much and for some reason thought was more durable. I love the Med Laser and SRM layout. What do you think of that mech?

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  6 років тому

      The QKD except the IV4 is not a good mech right now. Used to be pretty awesome like 2 years ago. If you enjoy brawl, I recommend a Linebacker. But I think you'll see after more experience that brawl currently is very situational.

The main downside is speed of course, but I'm used to playing the DWF so it's the same except the ANH doesn't go down as easily. I'd get a HBR if you don't have one already, another solid mech.

    1:30 I mean, or you could just buy survival, mobility, and some general weapon, operations, and sensors(whatever that tree is called) nodes and be fine. Few, if any, mechs are really going to punish you for not having very specific build of nodes. Newer players vs long term players, the prevalence of people burning coolshots to get 1-2 extra alphas off against you is 100000% more relevant than 10-20 specific nodes on the skill tree.

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  6 років тому

      Well you can play with no skill nodes and be fine, depending on your mech, piloting skills and skill level of the enemy team. Since the upgrades are there, most people just make use of them.

      2nd, 3rd,.... mech depends on what do u liked in the match. HBR is one of my favorites as well, fast, decent laser vomit plus ECM, which helps a lot to new players. If you play longer, u can try different builds with different purpose, when u choose wrong, u can alway return to HBR and earn more C-bills for another mech. BTW, I have the highest damage scored with HBR (1575dmg)

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  6 років тому

      Yep, as Lukas said, it depends on what you like. The trial mechs are a good way to experience different playstyles. For ballistics, the Ebon Jag is a good choice or Sun Spider if you pay real money at this moment. Some other good strong playstyles are not so newbie friendly like light poke/backstabber.

    • @DzinkyDzink
      @DzinkyDzink 6 років тому +1

      Locust.
      Jokes aside imo the only worthy IS Heavy through Tier5 to Tier3 are Maradeurs. People also like Warhammers, Riflemen and Jagermechs but I've never seen those do incredible things. Another problem with many IS Heavies is that they are very "heavyly themed" kind of mechs, Grasshoppers, Black Knights, Quickdraws, Thunderbolts are good at what they do and somewhat twistedly fun to run but are simply one-trick(two?) ponies competing between each other for attention. Compared to them the omnimechs like Hellbringer, Timberwolf and Ebon Jaguar are much more flexible and clan tech superiority doesn't limit you to the type of weapon quirk supported by the mech. It's easier to buy a Clan omni and learn/try everything you want rather than buy a Catapult, a Jagermech and a Grasshoper and then learn that you don't like them.
      As for Mediums: Bushwackers are obnoxiously powerful, but are somewhat not-noob-friendly because they have to mix 2-3 weapon types. Griffins are SRM brawling stars that will teach you to twist'n'shield and when to engage - higher speed and agility compared to brawling Heavies helps a lot with that.

      Yes Grasshopper is easy to play (laassors). Warhammer or Marauder if they like ballistics. Your friend can use trial mechs to see which playstyle works best for him. As Nick pointed out, you can't salvage a purchase mistakes as easily with non-omnimechs. If he bought a MAD and he found out that he doesn't like ballistics, he's SOL.

    You posted a link to a different build where the weapons are all Left-side, with a targeting computer in an arm slot. There are nine heat sinks in the build you show in the above video, and seven in the "clutchbringer" video. Both builds have the same complement of weapons. Why didn't you just rip out one of the heat sinks from the above build to put in the targeting computer and keep your preferred "centered-weapon-mount" playstyle?
    (Also, what does a "targeting computer" actually do in a game where you tell the machine where to point the guns with a mouse?)
    (Also-also, do you find the heat-gain from Clan ER PPCs to be too great to include in this build in place of the Large Pulses (even though they have better damage-per-second), or is there some other feature about PPCs in the game that you just "don't like" as a general rule?)

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  6 років тому +1

      Ah, the "Clutchbringer" videos were made before the HBR-P (or even F) omnipods were in the game. I no longer run a full left-stacked build like that on any HBR. Having the weapons be balanced between LT and RT and, more importantly, all high mounted is much less risky.
      The full effects of the TC is shown when you mouse over the item in mechlab. But for lasers, they increase the range. TC1 increases it by 4% for example. Often a good choice when you already have enough heatsinks. I dropped the TC in my current HBR laser build because PGI increased ERML heat generation since when I used it before. TCs have other effects for ballistics, PPCs and missiles as well, you'd have to look at the item in mechlab to see all the benefits.
      You don't see PPC+lasers that much is because lasers don't compliment them as well as ballistics. PPCs and ballistics are both pinpoint (except most of the larger Ultra ACs) and they're both projectiles, so you don't need to lead one weapon system and not the other. Ballistics is also low heat which mixes well with high heat PPCs. Some chassis can do laser+PPC well though, like the BLR Hellslinger. On the other hand, LPLs/ERLLs and ERMLs mesh very well with each other mostly because they're beam weapons. All the damage goes to where your reticle is pointed to.

    • @ANonymous-bh1un
      @ANonymous-bh1un 6 років тому

      Thank you for the reply. When you said "you can see in the mechlab" what a tactical computer did on mouseover, I thought you meant on smurfy-net - but then I realized you were saying *in the game*. I'm researching the game, but don't have it yet. I played the tabletop game many moons ago, when puppies were the oldest dogs in the world, and came down very firmly on the "energy weapons are best because you don't have to carry ammo and worry about it exploding" camp. I've always had a soft spot for Battletech lasers and ppcs.
      In another video, I saw that the Marauder MAD-3R (another machine that I've long had an affection for) had a "quirk" that increased PPC velocity by 50%. Checking smurfy-net tables and doing some math, that would give a skilled-plus-targeting-computer MAD-3R an IS ER PPC velocity of just over 3000 - more than any projectile gun in the game. Do you think that would ameliorate the "target lead" problem? I'm aware the weapons on the arms isn't a good idea, but it might be worth looking for another machine with better hardpoint layout with similar quirks/set-bonuses if that might work. ...Though this is now straying far afield from a "starter machine that will consistently earn you credits and teach you good skills" and moving into "...because it's fun" machine territory.

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  6 років тому +1

      Yes so the mechs with PPC velocity quirks will handle ppc laser combos the best. The hellslinger is one such mech. I don't completely remember what is the exact erppc velocity but suppose it's 1500m/s then the 50% quirk will make it 1500*1.5=2250. I would double check the MAD3R quirk value though I don't remember it was 50% but I could be wrong.
      Secondly I would avoid the IS Erppc. It's way too hot and frankly one of the worst weapons in the game right now.

    • @ANonymous-bh1un

      Yes, it appears the MAD-3R *did* have 50% PPC velocity, but now has just 20%. That's underwhelming, even on an ER PPC, and not that different than what I've seen of AC gameplay - so that's a no-go.

      it's because it's collosally overpowered right now, untill quirks are reworked it will remain as such.
      Too many high mounted weapon points to have on a mech with ECM and high torso twist. in poptart meta it's unbeatable, its in a class of it's own.
      Maybe give other mechs proper quirks and you could see some contenders, but instead PGI thinks nerfing clan lasers wholesale will get rid of HBR vomit...

      I'll take that into consideration when I do a video on IS mechs for beginniners. ENF-4R used to be super strong and is still one of the better IS mediums. The main issue is that it can't take much punishment and may be unforgiving for new players just entering the game. The last thing this game needs now is for interested newbies to get lurmed to death and quit within the first week.

      The marauder is a decent mech, but RACs are terrible weapons. They need too much facetime compared to other ballistics, so you can be easily cored (Center Torso destroyed). I would recommend you use either UACs (Ultra Auto-Cannons) or ACs instead of the RACs. This way, you can shoot and immediately twist to your left/right to prevent damage to your CT, and live longer to deal more damage.

    Why no right side laser vomit build? having a dead left side to shield with on an HBR is amazing. Also, no clue why you would not take laser duration skill nodes. So valuable. Everything else is great though. Cool vid.
    Me personally, I take standard laser vomit on the right torso, head &arm, shield with left side. Skill-tree focuses on heat/range/burn time firepower, cool-run, and mobility. Since you hardly get shot in an ECM HBR anyway the armor is not as useful as poking in and out of cover that much faster.

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  6 років тому +2

      Valid points. Here's my thinking
      1. if you do a right stacked build you're having to use some low mounted arm weapons. High mounts help you avoid getting shot back, so it mitigates the initial problem, which is taking damage at all.
      2. if you lose an ST you lose a lot of heat cap and cooling. You'd rather have all of your lasers sure, but you can't use them to their fullest extent. With a LT ST destruction, you have at least 2xERML 1xERLL (or 2xLPL 1xERML in the final build) which is about as much as you can fire without having to be cooling for like 7+ seconds after an ST destruction.
      3. A lot of experienced players already know that the right side with the P omnipod is just as dangerous as the left side so they'll sometimes take the right.
      4. Laser duration nodes are good, but there's nothing else I want to sacrifice. We can both point out cases where either node is more useful than the other.

    • @tex2383
      @tex2383 6 років тому +1

      Very good points. I guess it comes down to preference.
      1) I like your argument about the high mounts for the HBR, but if I want high mounts I use my EBJ, but for those who do not own one, it makes sense. presenting 1/3rd of your mech left to right vs up and down I guess are just preference. to each their own
      2) Losing the ST sucks so damn much, agree 100%. And most of the time when its gone, you can't take advantage of keeping all the weapons on one side running with the cooling penalty, so being down to 1/2 your weapons is not an issue if you are managing your heat/damage properly by never cooling off. But usually when I'm down to a CT/RT only HBR, my mech is not in good shape so I like to take less frequent peaks with a higher alpha to aid suitability. But yah, heat will be your limiting factor way more then weapons
      3) Experienced players know which components to focus a mech, that is true, but experienced players will mess your day up regardless of where they focus. But there are hardly any good players out there who punish me for running a right side build, and even against experienced 12 mans in FP, I can still torso twist out the damage well enough.
      4) Personal preference I guess. Taking extra points in mobility may bring you to cover just as quickly as having a smaller burn duration. But I see a -7.5% burn duration being way more valuable then +1% range, 0.6% heatgen, 0.6% cooldown (right side of skill tree for firepower)
      Thank you for the thought out reply, I enjoy seeing other peoples POV's.

      BrunoSSace I disagree on the Grasshopper it is too tall so that it easily sticks out of usual cover. A Marauder or Warhammer is a better choice. Thunderbolts are nice too.

      I agree, with the caveat that the player knows what he's getting into. I'll probably feature it later.

      I don't remember the model, but there is a Grasshopper with energy quirks and two high mounted energy points. I put two large pulses in those so I can fire over obstacles easily. I put 4 medium pulses in the lower slots to tear people up when they close range. I run an XL engine and jump jets. The mech is then highly maneuverable and works great as a flank attacker. It has pretty good heat management at 1.3+. I frequently get 600+ damage per match. In close range 1v1, I can dish out more dps than most heavies I face, so I normally core them quickly. This was one of my first mechs, and is still one of my favorites after 2 years. I highly recommend it as a beginner mech.

    It is hard for an experienced player to explain things so n00bs can understand.
    This video fails to explain well as it falls into all the traps an experienced player would fall into making stuff like this.
    As a n00b I am completely put off by all the terminology that is probably obvious to advanced players. Half of what BlackHawk is saying sounds like gibberish to me.

    • @BlackhawkSC
      @BlackhawkSC  5 років тому

      Thanks for the feedback but I don't think there's a lot of complex terminology in this video. This was purposely made such that if you played the game for a day or two, went through the built-in Academy and the UI, you should have enough knowledge to understand everything or nearly everything in the video. But if you still have questions feel free to ask.

    Man, I love the things the HBR can do, but it's so ungodly ugly. Those doofy looking arms, those clunky looking legs, they just ruin the mech for me. I've hated how it and the Summoner look since back in MW2, where they were even uglier. Alex does good work, but putting lipstick on a pig doesn't do much.
    And with those complaints stated, I know for a fact that the HBR is the best mech I will never own or play. I have many friends who swear by it, and it's a solid pick up for anybody new to the game.
