      Mainly it's used for broken on things, you can also used for persons. Ich bin kaputt - I'm totally exhausted.

      Could also be translated as finished, so he could’ve said, “I’m finished” or if talking about Germany “we’re finished.” Knowing that defeat was close

    I believe historians agree that he probably got shot from an Australien machine gunner. The bullet that killed him came from the ground, went through the side of his plane, then went into his right hip, traveled through his heart and either out of his left shoulder or got stuck in his left shoulder.
    It's remarkable that, even though got a bullet through his heart, he still managed to relatively safely land his plane.

      I could be wrong, but considering his darker mindset I have a feeling that the last flight was a suicide run since he was doing so weird "mistakes".
      His last word Kaput can be him referring to himself, that he had enough.

    Richthofen was buried four times. First by the allies with full military honors by personal from No. 3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps at Betangles near Amiens. In early 1920s his remains was moved to a german war cemetery in Fricourt. In 1925 his youngest brother Bolko arranged to move his remains to Schweidnitz cemetery in Berlin, to rest next to his father and brother Lothar. But the german goverment requested that his remains rested at Invalidenfriedhof, where many german heroes and former leaders was buried. The family agreed and Richthofens casket got a state funeral. The nazi goverment used Richthofen in propaganda, and made him a hero symbol for the emerging Luftwaffe, and held a grandiose memorial at the grave. In 1975 he was finally laid to rest in a family plot at south cemetery in Wiesbaden. (Wikipedia)

    per Merriem-Webster
    Kaput originated with a card game called piquet that has been popular in France for centuries. French players originally used the term capot to describe both big winners and big losers in piquet. To win all twelve tricks in a hand was called "faire capot" ("to make capot"), but to lose them all was known as "être capot" ("to be capot"). German speakers adopted capot, but respelled it kaputt, and used it only for losers. When English speakers borrowed the word from German, they started using kaput for things that were broken, useless, or destroyed.

    This is easily my most favourite Sabaton song. idk, during the organ solo you almost can feel the oil mist, your Monosupape R9 (The Engine) constantly spits out, pattering on your face.

    "Kaputt" means "broken" or "destroyed", also "totaly exhausted or wasted" in German. It could be used for things, machines, but also as a personal condition like after a hard day "Ich bin so kaputt" - " I´m so done/wasted"

    It's interesting to note that he didn't so much have the mindset of a warrior, the man was a cold blooded killer. He'd been an avid hunter, and the war came along when hunting no longer scratched his itch. Fighting and killing was pretty much his end all as opposed to his brother Lothar, who was eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we may die, and Hermann Goering who assumed command after his death, a basic narcissist. Manfred was as big a hero as any in the Kaiser's Germany and for a long time they sent him a small silver trophy for each kill. He finally told them to stop as he didn't care about being a hero or for the recognition. The German command wanted to make him their poster boy (aviators were the gun fighters and crusaders of WW1) like the US did with Eddie Rickenbacker. They were constantly frustrated with his lack of enthusiasm for it, he'd do it if ordered because he was a very professional soldier, but he simply regarded it as a distraction from his mission

    Germans were one of the largest immigrant groups in the United States. Even more words migrated to American, like doppelganger, iceberg, angst,...
    Bloody April comes about as the squadron gets new, improved planes. Superior aircraft + superior pilots = carnage.

  • @Happymali10
    @Happymali10 2 роки тому +1

    I think its interesting that he had an approach of "aim for the man", opposing the usual "you won if the enemy's aircraft can't continue the attack"-approach that birthed behavior like that seen from the Stiegler-incident ("No bullets fly")

      Well, in all fairness back in those days hitting the pilot was the best way to put and aircraft out of action. The pilots had no armor, so killing them was a lot more efficient than spending time blasting their plane to pieces

    I am German, but there is a detail I hate about all this hero stuff. Heros are often killers. He killed so many, why is he a hero? I understand if someone has to defend himself or his family, but we Germans were the attackers in this war.
    If you need a German hero in war times, take Sophie Scholl.
    Sabaton should do a video about her.
    The Red Baron was just a killer. Yes, he was an amazing pilot, still a killer.
    I see no reason to glorify him.

    • @C0ldD1rective
      @C0ldD1rective 8 місяців тому

      You don't have to glorify him, but that won't stop people (me included) for holding massive respect for him. Being a killer doesn't exclude you from being a hero, take Audie Murphey. His action for a medal of honor was to stay behind and man a burning tank to kill attacking Germans.
      He's still a hero. The Red Baron is a hero to his people, and while you don't agree, it doesn't lessen his standing. He killed for a living but set a bar and a standard for pilots.
