Simba's wicked uncle, Scar (Jeremy Irons), plots to usurp Mufasa's throne by luring father and son into a stampede of wildebeests. But Simba escapes, and only Mufasa is killed. Simba returns as an adult (Matthew Broderick) to take back his homeland from Scar with the help of his friends Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella).

Simba is an excellent character analysis for dealing with childhood trauma, grief and PTSD. Idk if you noticed: when Nala and Simba reunite, she says “wait until everyone hears you’ve been here all this time. And your mother, what will she think?” The phrase “what will your mother think” was said by Scar while blaming Simba for Mufasa’s death. This is why when Nala says it he looks super anxious and is probably feeling some PTSD. Fascinating!

My heart ALWAYS hurts for Sarabi. She had lost both her husband and her son in one day, and she didn't even know that Simba was still alive.😭 I can't imagine the pain she was in and how long she grieved. And it makes me all the more angrier at Scar. Not only did he have the balls to stand in front of Sarabi and lie to her face about Mufasa's death, not only does he betray his brother, nephew, and sister-in-law, not only he made Simba believe it was his fault, but he gas-lit Simba to believing he didn't deserve forgiveness for the longest time for Mufasa's death and carry that guilt for years even though Simba knew it was an accident. 🤬 Awful villain I love to hate.

Here's the thing. What Simba "claims" he did was no accident, it wasn't even his fault. Did anyone notice where the hyenas were when Scar gave the hyenas orders silently? Scar got those scavengers to go rile up the Wilderbeasts and made them go down the Gouge. Simba's roar possibly didn't cause that much effect compared to the hyenas chasing down those wilderbeasts into a stampede. Scar really wanted to have Pride Rock to himself that he planned that stampede.

The sound design and sound editing in this film is Oscar-worthy. I still remember seeing this in the theater for the first time. On really good speakers, this movie sounds absolutely IMMENSE. The very beginning... With the nature sounds being suddenly interrupted by that opening wail from Lebo M.... I was absolutely hooked. The first time we meet Scar, when he slams his paw down to trap the mouse, that *thud!* just shook the theater. The stampede sequence.... The floor just rumbled! And then contrasting those loud, booming moments with the times of contemplative quiet... Simba's lecture after the hyena chase, the aftermath of the stampede... And of course, Zimmer's Oscar-winning score. This movie is absolutely terrific, and that is largely thanks to the meticulous way every element of it was put together and thought through by the filmmakers. Nothing is there by accident.
Disney doesn't make movies like this anymore.

Fast forward 10 years later, I stumble across this once again and rewatched it. I somewhat regret learning some things I did not understand and learn about from my childhood, but I truly am glad I finally understand the whole story behind this.
I also have a theory that Scar's timing of initiating the stampede was picture-perfect. The stampede started only moments after Simba executed his first loud roar, which likely led to Simba believing that by roaring a little too loud, it scared the wildebeests and accidentally triggered the stampede, which later led to his father's death.

When he thinks mufasa has come back to life he recoils and slouches into a corner, then when he realizes it’s Simba he right away starts the manipulator act once again
When Simba has him dead to rights on the cliff face he immediately postulates, begs, and tries to use his family status and etc to his leverage, and blames the hyena’s, then as soon as Simba has his guard down he attacks
then finally when he falls off the cliff and see the hyenas he immediately tries to manipulate them only for them to reveal they heard him throw them under the bus
and Scar’s own cowardice and backstabbing nature spells his end.

Dang, that's deep. I often hear stories of how people learned about death when they were kids, whether it be from hearing about a family member passing away, or having a pet die, etc., but for me personally, I learned about death from my mum talking about random people she knew back in England, and then she said "Oh, he/she died, and that's why I no longer seem them," so that strangely made me more accepting of death as a kid, because I figured it's just something that happens to people eventually.

-Rafiki was originally gonna be a cheetah.
-It was originally gonna be a war between lions and baboons.
-Johnathon Taylor Thomas from Home Improvement plays Young Simba.
-Matthew Broderick who plays Adult Simba, previously played in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
-The Mufasa’s ghost scene wasn’t originally gonna be in the movie but they decided to add it so Simba gets motivated to return to the Pride Lands.
    - Tim Curry was originally gonna play Scar.
-Mufasa was originally gonna have a song called “Mighty King of the Wild”.
-James Earl Jones & Madge Sinclair (Sarabi) previously played in the Eddie Murphy movie “Coming to America”.

When Scar is first introduced we see him playing with his prey (Zazu even specifically tells him not to play with his food) and he does this throughout the movie. For example, he toys with Simba when he finds him with Mufasa’s body. He could have just killed him but instead relishes the opportunity to make him as miserable as possible, right before he orders the hyenas to kill him. He loves the play a little too much and it causes Simba to escape him not once but twice. It’s this weakness that makes him lose.

The Lion King was one of my fav movies in my childhood, it gets me the heart of the movie is the love of father and son that Mufasa and Simba and always it makes a lump in my troat seeing to Simba trying to wake up to his father. It's a horrible fear losing a parent and imagining I can put myself in his place.
But I am always moved by the ending when Simba finally frees himself from some of the guilt he carried by Scar, he regained his kingdom ascending the throne and the cycle of life returns.
Also the characters Mufasa (really he was a good dad), Simba (I'm amazed by all his path and history, and the death of Mufasa always break my heart, and after that, he lost his family and home, but he learned the past can hurt, but you can run from it or learn), Nala and Timon and Pumba (his loyal and support friends).. and Scar is the most hateful and cruel villain for me, that I never expected his plan to work, blame to Simba for the death of his father and banish him from his home, planning to kill him too and ruining the kingdom under his government.

Another thing that’s great is that the movie has a lot of mirror scenes, repeating scenes in different contexts. A great example is adult Simba struggling through the bushes to follow Rafiki. It’s a callback to when he fled after Mufasa’s death, when he was crawling through the thorn bushes. He was moving to the right in that scene. Adult Simba goes to the left, literally going back to the moment he lost himself and get healing. Also, when Simba throws Scar off of Pride Rock he falls in the exact same way as young Simba did when he ran from Scar and fell in the thorn bushes.

I remember The Lion King was the very first movie I saw in theaters. I still remember the soundtrack booming through the theater speakers and I remember crying when Mufasa was killed and also being sooooo frightened by Scar especially during the scene where he sings "Be Prepared" and his shadow yikes it always has and still gives me the creeps even now. Scar is also my favorite Disney villain. It's like you said eventhough he's so evil and manipulative you just love to hate him lol. Scar's clever and sarcastic dialogue just hits everytime. Sarabi, Nala and Rafiki were my favorite characters in this movie. I just love how crazy yet wise Rafiki truly is and how strong and noble Sarabi is even after Scar takes over. In that scene where Scar is commanding Sarabi to come to him yet she walks ever so slowly and keeps her head held high the entire time just like a true queen. I also always wondered why Scar wasn't hesitant to kill Mufasa and Simba yet when it came to Sarabi he would threaten her but never actually kill her. It was almost like he was afraid if he killed Sarabi the rest of the pride wouldn't listen to him. The other thing I always found interesting is that the lionesses don't actually look afraid of Scar. They just seem like they are only following his orders because he is a part of the royal family and the lionesses are just following tradition of serving the royal family. I also noticed how Scar always looked so sinister in his face but his body actually looks weak even the lionesses look like they have more muscle than Scar. I also always found it interesting how the rest of the pride never stood up to Scar. Like I always wondered why they waited until Simba returned and then all of a sudden they let loose and were willing to fight to the death. I always thought that after Mufasa died the rest of the pride kinda looked like they had lost their confidence and it took seeing Simba to boost their morale back up.
