Chilled me when I first read it as a teenager and still raises (greying and thinning) hairs now. Hodgson never fails to evoke horror and wonder. Great reading!
Ive requested this one like three times over the past few years. I have the print version in a copy of Famous Fantastic Mysteries which i will use to follow along. Thank you so much!
What an Epic! Strange lands, danger, mysterious creatures, romance, bromance, and enough classic technical sailing jargon to anesthetize a kelp kraken … hats off to horrorbabble for once again singing us such a sweet and phantastic lullaby.
I figured I would get a "quick story" in before bed. 6 hours! Gonna be spreading this one out. This one is gonna take a couple of days. I cannot resist a fantastic tale from William Hope Hodgson! This is a great one! I always wonder how many more fantastic treasures he would have brought us if he was not killed in action. As a retired sailor, his stories are music to my ears. He uses correct nautical terminology, uses "sailor words," and correctly captures the personalities of sailors (especially our superstitions). Thanks, Ian! I am sure this one took a while to put together.
I had not previously looked into his personal life until you mentioned it, but the wikipedia article is unusually detailed. Notable in particular that he was medically discharged from service, but insisted he be allowed to return before his death in action. I will give him special consideration this Remembrance. As you say, the World lost a great deal in that conflict.
@tamlandipper29 his Wikipedia article is really good. He had one heck of a life. He went to sea and made his living. Then, he signed up and joined the Army instead of joining the Royal Navy, which surprised people. As you said, he was discharged and went back. Reports say he was evacuating wounded soldiers of his battery when he was killed. That Spring Offensive was something else. The world lost so much in those four years (our family lost two out of three that went over). Talk about living a life like one of our own characters! I always do a special remembrance for all of them on November 11th. We celebrate Veterans' Day and Armistice Day on the same day.
I love these long reads.........cant wait for the 12 days this year. Thanks folks you and with the darker nights it makes things so much more enjoyable. I wish I had a fire or open stove to stare into longingly. Il just sit next to the radiator and turn on the oven light for effect 😂😂
So many thanks Ian , this is the best thing since the mountains of madness and The mound. You couldn't possibly know my appreciation. I know you put a lot of effort into these ,thank you Mister.
Having the narrator be somewhat competent and normal adds to the realism. And the teamwork displayed throughout the story keeps it from becoming a long, torturous slog through horror.
Yo!! House on the Borderland is my favorite of all time. I actually am listening to this for the first time, and have The Night Land set up for the next listen. I'm very excited. Glad to see someone else who loves Hodgson as much as I do!!
@@Slapdab I thought it was brilliant and quite different to the usual horror I read. My only criticism is that I think the whole part where time speeds up until the years pass by in milliseconds, then the solar system dies and time comes to a halt again, ironically dragged on for a bit too long.
W.H.H. written a story of true accounts who would have thought. Ian you never disappoint all these years and the channel just gets better and better. So my Good Sir I Thank you Jen & HB team
I just spent the last several nights listening to this story and I’m pretty sure this is the best story I’ve ever heard! Thank you so much for taking all the time to read it so perfectly.
i’ve been using this video to fall asleep for a few days now, getting further and further along into it, and so far my main takeaway is that i think the narrator is in love with the bo’sun.
I must say this version is for me superior to - I think - the short extract you did before. The framework of the lifeboats struck me as very Big Old Boats. Love it so far. Edit: I found only one image of a "cut-and-thrust sword" as mentioned in the story. Never seen one before!
I haven't previously recorded an extract from it, though there are several Hodgson short stories that are certainly very similar. As for the sword: a thing of beauty!
@@HorrorBabblef Obviously you'd know. But I could have sworn the bit about being trapped on a boat and eating salt pork with vinegar was familiar. Or I'm just remembering Portuguese pica pau.
I've been listening to this every night before going to bed, and have finally com to the end. What a great story very well read ! Once again,Mr Hodgson and Mr Gordon have not disappointed !
I'm loving this! So refreshing to listen to a story where folks actually make reasonable decisions. I'm barely half-way through for now though, but really loving it so far - insomnia and a good story go well hand-in-hand, haha.
Oh man, this is my first time listening to this. I had started it the last recording, but never got past chapter 2-3 due to falling ill and not wanting to listen to something so enjoyable while feeling terrible. This has the potential to rival House on The Borderlands as my favorite book from what I've listened to so far. Thanks for recording such great stories/readings!!
He's as obsessed with the Sargasso as freshwater eels. (Fun fact- they won't breed and reproduce anywhere else and need to make their way to this specific spot from Kansas in the west and Germany in the east) An extremely fascinating but sadly endangered animal but I imagine many wooden derelicts would accumulate there back in the day due to it being the Atlantic's (comparatively cleaner) version of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
A 6 hours long Hope Hodgsen story, (even though I've read it,) I think I'll leave it till tomorrow and take the time to enjoy it properly. As usual thanks.
Nice one! This story has some serious long complicated sentences! Great job here, it’s not always easy to read aloud, something with this many semicolons!
Excellent stuff! One of my favourite "fall asleep" channels. I listen to the story in bed, lighys off ,.eyes shut. . . You have the best voice for it !!!!
25 years to the day of the end of WW1,"the war to end all wars"is ironic considering this hope against this horrific incident, may their sacrifices be more widely remembered+that they all enjoy the sweetest of dreams(i'm not religious )
“We had some hemp rope…”. Secure the gunnels. There is definitely a good story to be written about this hemp farmer…. I was thinking. Is that something we could co produce. Sling blade meets papillon or something. Do is scary. Lot of options there

@Eris123451 I would do that, but kind of hard to stop the video when you are asleep. I try to make note of the time when I start nodding off, but that is not exactly reliable.
@@Eris123451 As I said, that doesn't help when you don't know during which chapter you fell asleep. It makes it a bit easier, sure, but shorter videos would still be better for me. There is also way less risk of accidental spoilers when trying to find my place, or when waking up at night, when the video is still playing.
