I can see that I'm going to have to listen to a bit more Epica. The first couple songs I heard some time ago didn't have the musicality or lyrical interest these couple of songs have. The fans have obviously given you better choices than random searching does. Looking forward to your analysis.
I guess it was part of Friar Guylain's plan going into this: to let the public pick the most meaningful songs, or ones legendary for some other reason. So the possibility of a "miss" was practically minimized. A good intro "course" to follow here, if I may say so. :)) \m/
I will be totally frank. I tried EPICA 18 months ago. 5-7 songs (I don't even remember which ones). I had the same impression. But with this series, until now, it is a first-class selection. Since the third song is from the Consign to Oblivion album (2005), I will listen to the whole album of 2003 in the coming week. To be followed!
For me, besides about 15-20 songs that hooked me immediately, Epica music was an acquired taste. After ‘digesting’ the complexity and creativity in their rich catalog, I can say now I never heard a band with so many great songs and masterpieces. Years after I discovered them, I still can find new greatnesses in songs that didn’t impress me in the first listen.
@@GuylainPrince you may remember I commented last week about not having taken the time to attack Epica's catalog. In part that was because I was having difficulty finding a "way in", and it looks like I wasn't alone! Still following along your journey.
@@wmlye1 and MrSh0110 : I can understand that. I can honestly say that easily understood songs are sometimes classics, but there is a lot of GREAT songs that we don't find great on first hearing. We end up with just enough curiosity to dig a bit more, and there we find the "gold nuggets". I have a secret for you: I asked the fans to prepare for myself an "initiation-and-crash-course" in Epica music. They did just that. And I think I will be the first to profit from the exercise! Glad you enjoy it as well.
Hello Guylain, I am a Patreon of Epica and I can tell you they have been in the recording studio for some time now. I think we are getting new material soon:)
Thank you for doing Epica. Nightwish and Epica are my to favourite bands. I love watching your facial expressions. It reminds me of the first time I discovered these 2 band. Amazing lyrics and musical composition.
Thanks ! Imagine when I am the Choir director. I lead the group with my face! :-) That is why I have a problem: NOT to move my hand constantly during the listening!
Love to see you fall in love with one of my favorites. I really enjoyed watching your face as you listened to the song. It's great to see someone get totally emerged in the music. And also: thinking of how long ago this was written. They've evolved so much since then. I hope you like present day Epica too. In autumn this year they expect to release a new album. They've shared several videos of them working on it. I cannot wait. Also: I am really interested to see your analysis of this one! Thank you so much for sharing!!
A beautiful and majestic song, but compositionally one of their simpler, when they were still trying to find their form. That takes nothing away from the depth of the lyrics or grand beauty of the song though. This is the song that made me fall in love with Epica.
I agree with you. Musically, it is easy to read, but - like you say - it conveys a very powerful message. Be their for the [ANALYSE]. I loved it! Deeply. And understand why you love EPICA.
For some kinds of music, and emotion, I am convinced that the greats of classical music would have used a metal ensemble. Especially in the romantic era.
Yours are reactions I like very much!! Epica has been one of my favorite bands since I first heard their music (discovered them by the art cover of Consign to Oblivion) and I will be happily and patiently waiting for your reactions :). I checked the spanish subtitles btw and I think they’re quite good. Thanks!!
Be aware that "Consign to Oblivion", which you are going to listen to next time, is the third part of another collection of songs with lyrics by Mark Jansen titled "A New Age Dawns". The songs come from the albums of 2005 and 2009 and are: Hunab K'u (prologue) The Last Crusade Mother of Light Consign to Oblivion Resign to Surrender Kingdom of Heaven Design Your Universe
Great reaction! You should watch this song on the retrospect show indeed, it is amazing with choir and full orchestra on stage. Epica really lets the orchestra shine, it is not there to back up Epica but it is a important part of Epica's music. The orchestration and choir increases, espacially the last two albums are amazing orchestral pieces as well. I really hope you will do those big long songs from those last two albums, but we'll see. By the way, the first two albums have been re - released with a bonus, only orchestral music, rearranged by Mark Jansen. Can't wait for your analysis of the Phanton Agony! I' ll be there.
Thanks! Since the "Façade of Reality" (my third reaction) I really got the impression that I found "gold nuggets", a really, really good band. Until now, they have been up to par with what I expected! So, I am SO EAGER to go further.
Can't wait for the analysis! Great video, as always. Can't wait to hear your opinions when you see them growing into their own niche with much more developed sound! By the way, am I the only one who only sees black for the second half of the video?
Nope, it must be a small editing problem. No big deal. Friar Guylain will probably fix it? The end credits are around minute 17 anyway. There is nothing more after that.
@@GuylainPrince C'est du metal symphonique un peu plus bourrin que Epica ou Nightwish. Some of these best musicians are also some of the best priests isn't it?
