  • In this video, I'm gonna show you exactly how I recreated a studio ghibli scene in Blender. More specifically, it's this super popular scene from the anime movie 'My Neighbour Totoro' that I'm going to recreating in 3D.
    It took me around 3 weeks to make it from start to finish, because I really didn't want to rush it. And honestly, I'm pretty proud of how it turned out, and I'm excited to show you how I made it.

    It seems that the lofi beat that I used in the beginning (which had the same melody as a piece from My Neighbour Totoro) got picked up by UA-cam as a cover song and now all of my revenue from this video will be going to the original creator of the song just because of the melody. That's quite a shame. Due to this fact, not only am I not going to earn anything from it, but it has also affected my reach with this video quite a lot.
    Since I won't be making much profit off of this video, I'd highly appreciate it if you buy this scene on Gumroad. You get the Blender and Photoshop source project files. Of course there is no obligation to do so, but if you want to support me for my work on this one, that's the best way to do it while also getting a good return. At the end of the day, even I want to be able to make a living out of this so things like this go a long way in supporting me to do so. Thank you for understanding!

    As a fellow 3D artist; I am astonished by how much I need to learn to have the conviction you had when you created this wonderful piece. I'm positive this took you countless hours to make; everything from the modeling to the UV texturing of those sculpts. Not to mention your attention to detail when using Substance Painter. Also, that FBI skit, unexpected but hilarious. Great job!

      Thank you so much, it's honestly a great feeling when you compile all of those little steps and bits and pieces of recordings of all of those days into a single video. And comments like these are very encouraging and make the whole process of editing together the video worthwhile. By the way, it's all in Blender, I never used Substance Painter for this.

      RenderRides The body shape probably could’ve been made in poly modeling at low poly with only scale and proportional transform. You could get the shape in a few minutes, then subdivide and sculpt detail. A lot of it I felt switched to detail and high poly too quickly, especially with the ears, a lot of time was spent getting the shape in sculpt instead of just poly modeling the shape then moving it to sculpt. Poly modeling shapes and then detailing with sculpt is a fast and performance light workflow.

    • @RenderRides
      @RenderRides  3 роки тому +1

      @@smalliesmalls9601 Love your comment. I agree with the part where you said I switched to high poly too early with the ears. At first I felt like the proportions were okay until I watched some clips on UA-cam to find out they were totally off. Still, I'm happy that I was able to get the shape to my satisfaction.

    • @smalliesmalls9601
      @smalliesmalls9601 3 роки тому +3

      RenderRides Kinda like traditional art, it’s best to get proportions with low detail before moving further. But for 3d it’s mainly because its much easier to make large changes in a shape at low poly.

    By the way, I'm very sorry if the video if not appropiated for questions, but...
    I'd like to work on models similar to those found on the 3D Ace Attorney games, and I'm very, very new in 3D modeling. Would Blender be fine to sculpt AND animate some very basic animations? Let's say, some facial expressions, hand movements, etc.
    Again, cool work of yours!

      Thanks a lot for your comment! If you're going for an NPR look, it should give you a lot of freedom with making characters. Blender is more than capable in the aspect of sculpting and animation, so you can go for it blindly. The 'basic' animations which you mention here are actually quite complicated, since they require a fair bit of knowledge about rigging characters. I'd highly recommend that you get a strong hold of the basics of using Blender first, and then slowly create and finish some characters by watching tutorials. I can also highly recommend getting a Blender Cloud subscription and watching the courses there as they are created by professionals with a lot of experience in that subject.
      Thanks again for watching, and I wish you good luck with your projects! :D

    You could've used the pose brsh to move his arms but using a separate mesh for the arms is muuuuuch easier to pose. Also sculpting tip, use a Lower resolution first to block in the shapes, then increase the resolution, will save you so much time.

    • @RenderRides
      @RenderRides  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the tips! I was already in it deep when I realized I should've used separate meshes XD

      @@RenderRides ye also the common mistake everyone makes when starting sculpting is that they make like a 1000+ polygon mesh but honestly if you keep it to like a couple 100 to get the base shape and then upping the rez later will not only help with sculpting speed but it would also help not melt your computer.

    Looks so pretty! I could never be as good as you Omg 😍 keep going! You are very talented. I never tried digital art before but it looks SO difficult ( as I am a traditional artist). Congrats on this work! 💪🏻🥳
    I found your channel because I just did a ghibli studio scene myself 🥰

    • @RenderRides
      @RenderRides  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much! Don't let this video overwhelm you, this is literally a whole month of work compressed into 30 minutes haha! Just take it step by step, watch and follow tutorials to make your first few scenes until you get the hang of it. Then you can try to make your original scenes following references, and watch videos for any technical help that you might need. Besides, if you're coming from traditional art, you might feel more comfortable in the 2D workflow of drawing directly on the canvas.
      Anyway, I wish you good luck with your digital art journey (also drop a link to your ghibli scene ;D)
