as someone who doesnt have particular interest in diving, i have to say that i find myself coming back to this channel often and i always end up watching the whole video. you guys do a great job and all the commentary is very interesting
You can't underestimate the power/force of the air you breath out in a closed environment. I went ice diving once during the winter with a group of other divers. The air we exhaled was slowly pushing the ice up as we were all diving the same route from point A to B. Finally someone started drilling holes in the ice because it was starting to crack, air just spurted out like crazy because of the build up pressure.
Wow that’s something I’ve never considered.
Your lungs can hold up to 6 liters of air, so every exhale you can imagine how much volume that is collecting under the ice

Thanks for sharing. That is really a great example of something rarely mentioned. Ice diving must be really interesting, a stark contrast all the warm water dives we usually hear about.

@@tylergoins2026 Even on land you can get swallowed up by a damn sink hole. That one where those peoples son’s whole bedroom got sucked under ground was terrifying. He was just sleeping in his bed and his whole room went under. He of course passed. 😢

That was indeed a tough one. You can feel how serious it is just by watching their reactions. Different than other vídeos there are no stops to explain which errors were made. They did everything right, and the thing colapsed. It is a real risk and you can mitigate it, but not neutralize it. Huge respect for cave divers. Thank you Woody and Gus for sharing this video!

I like what you guys were saying at the end of the video how diving isn’t completely safe. I’m not a diver but I am a skier up here in MT and there’s only so much you can do to prevent bad outcomes from avalanches and such. It all comes down to risk management, preparedness, and common sense. We had a couple seasons in a row where there were a couple deaths around the state from skiing and even one at my local resort. Doesn’t mean it’s not safe however, like diving, you need to be very thoughtful in what your doing and how your going to do it safely.

I’m glad you’re back! I feel a little embarrassed to say, because it’s such a tiny little step, but I’ve managed to lose 67 pounds and counting. I started swimming in my brother’s saltwater pool, then I got a decent snorkeling set. It’s not scuba, but I’ve practiced in steps, getting comfy with hearing and slowing my breathing and heart rate, attempting to swim to the pool floor (snorkel valve closes), especially hard in salt water I guess, and most of all, learning to relax ands lightly bend my knees when I’m relaxed underwater and using the fins. I can’t believe how fast I can move. For the first time, I’m beginning to wonder if I can at least get a scuba experience in the pool. Big steps for me. Update: I’ve now lost 105 pounds!

I appreciate your enthusiasm for cave diving. I have been a master diver since 1983 and have enjoyed dives around the world. I have never had a desire to cave dive and would never consider it. I am a non-cave diver.

I admire you guys for taking all those risks. I could never do it. Being inside a submerged cave like that would completely freak me out. But I really like watching the fascinating video footage of all those caves.
This is so sad. The situation is literally one of my worst fears. As Woody said that there is a point where u have a thought "I'm going to die" this is so so sad. Not only the guy was burried alive but in an underwater cave! Such a tragedy, usually it is easy to rationalise things and say that something could have not happen if there was no mistakes, but in this situaition nothing could have been done better. They did everything right and the man still died :(
I’ve spent many weekends at Camp Indian Springs back when it was rented out as a functional camp. There was a small wood dock and a canoe shed. Many an alligator would come up to the shore and sunbathe. It was significantly smaller than Wakulla Springs which is a public spring just a few miles down the road.
Edit: you are correct Sirs. The picture at 7:55 is the first picture of Indian Springs in this video.

Dude imagine knowing your about to drown and escaping narrowly, then have to sit there for hours knowing your buddy didn’t make it. It’s like getting into a car accident where your friend flew thru the window and died but you are force to sit in the car for hours thinking about it

If a drop in weight is not intentional, it's medically a bad sign -- so it's best not to randomly congratulate how someone looks if they may not have lost weight on purpose.

A drop in weight due to medical reasons is very obvious physically, people usually aren't glowing from that like he is currently. pls find someone else to try to lecture about weight comments. --speaking as someone that's experienced medical weight loss and intentional weight loss, people don't need you to speak for them and defend a fictional scenario! :) thanks though! have a great day.

It occurs to me that cave diving is like reverse mountain climbing listening to you both talk of the dangers. And who can plan for EVERY SINGLE possibility? That's unrealistic IMHO. So, you plan as best you can and go from there: Mother Nature is a fickle b***h. Keep up the great videos, guys, educational and fun.

I haven’t seen Dive Talk in a couple months. Gus, you look amazing. Your weight loss is very noticeable. I’m very proud of you.
I would imagine the geology of the area has a role to play in assessing the safety, too. How stable or fragile do structures tend to be in the area, what was going on when things were formed that might influence stability, etc.
Idk why this channel popped in to my feed. But That diving at chernobyl video got me. Ive never dived in my life and now im binge watching these nightmares. I used a snorkle in my grandmas pool once
WKPP. I know a lot about wooden roller coasters, traditional amusement parks, aircraft structural maintenance, flying, but almost nothing about diving. However, from watching your excellent videos I get the impression that you two are high-level professionals, or at least close. Whatever the requirements might be to participate in this organization, WKPP, I feel as though you both could do it. Maybe I’m wrong. But I did hear you say “I’d pay an insane amount of money to dive Indian Springs.” GO FOR IT! I think you’re capable. I never thought I’d ride every wood roller coaster in the U.S. or be in a position of influence in parks deciding to buy & move a wood coaster, or be engineering the most advanced aircraft ever built (the F-35), but I’ve done these things. You can dive Indian Sorings if you want to bad enough, just like I will fly and own and work on a P-51 Mustang WWII fighter plane someday! We can accomplish great stuff!
Well, thank you. We can definitely dive at Indian Springs, and we would love to. But the WKPP divers are just world-class and of the highest caliber, they have vast experience and insane skills, we are nowhere near that level and to even think we are even close to matching that would be childish from our part. We know our skills, and understand we'll never be part of that elite group of cave divers, and that's okay. Not everyone will or can get to that level of commitment. Organizations like WKPP and KUR do amazing exploration and we highly respect, admire, and look up to those cave explorers.
Thanks again guys for always making us aware. How sad is this story? It's heartbreaking because it was nothing they did wrong. A loss is so hard anyway but especially involving a man of such drive for knowledge to ensure safety for others.

Florida is filled with pine trees. There’s also a town called Christmas, which was named after their Christmas trees. People think it’s all beach & palm trees, but it’s actually swamp and pines

Yes I have asthma and then I got covid and my lungs got damaged I'm 60 but when I have an asthma attack it's super scary but my medicine keeps it under control. Sometimes I sit around and start getting stressed out and worried about having an attack and that can make one happen. Somehow and I'm not sure how, these videos started coming across my feed and I started watching them. When I hear stories about people who are diving and they get stuck there is nothing like that, to make you realize that you're okay and that you're breathing and that you can breathe still and that if you stay calm, everything's going to be fine. These videos are my therapy. No way would I ever go into any environment in which my oxygen is limited. That includes diving, outer space and climbing tall mountains like Mount Everest.

I’m sure this has been mentioned as I’m just a keyboard warrior but wouldn’t putting and eye bolt or whatever in that air pocket(or every single one for that matter) allow people to clip on and and at least asphyxiate “peacefully”?Hope y’all see this I know it’s after the fact

always look 4ward to gus n woodys videos . they explain everything so well. my dad was a navy diver from the 50s till 73 end of vietnam war .he tried to get me into diving but sadly i couldnt do it. i love the water n love being offshore in rivers ect fishing or just in a kyak paddleing around enjoying nature .i envy both of you guys n love the vids of dives in ocean n caves .i couldnt get into diving because i have a short patience n would stuff up deco times plus i dont know why but if i cant see the bottom my feet n me stay on terrafirma lol spose being honest to my dad n me has saved my life n maybe a few others too .i sent you an email bout 4 days ago but yet have no reply ??? cheers from australia great barrier reef area

As always, informative and entertaining in equal amounts. It's always a huge relief to be "guided" by you two, when seeing other content creator's coverage of cave diving! I learn far more from you two correcting gaffs and outright fallacies in these reactions, then from the original content! You're reactions add a sort of quality control, to the sometimes otherwise shaky information put out by some of these YT channels. 👍🤘

I'm not certain about the phenomenon that could have caused the cave ceiling collapse, but it could be due to the following two separate phenomena or even a combination of both:
Considering the normal water density at 1 ton/m³ and the density of limestone between 1.8 and 3 tons/m³.
A force resulting from Archimedes' buoyancy principle applied to the rock amounts to 1 ton for a rock weighing between 1.8 and 3 tons, countering the rock's gravitational force.
To cause the collapse, there would need to be an air pocket in the upper part of the cave passage where the water is completely replaced by the exhaled air of the divers. Consequently, the rock's cohesion, which was sufficient to keep the rock attached to the ceiling underwater, might no longer be sufficient in the air.
This aligns with Guss's explanation.
The second phenomenon that I seemed to understand from the commented video is more related to the water density itself. Water into which a lot of small-diameter bubbles are injected can easily contain 15 to 20% of its volume as long as the air source doesn't stop. As a result, the water's density decreases by 15 to 20%, and the Archimedes buoyant force on the rock diminishes accordingly.
This second effect is less significant, but one can imagine that if the rock's cohesion was already very weak, this variation alone could also trigger the collapse.
It's possible that both phenomena occurred. I don't think it's possible to be certain.
I think I've seen a video with the professor who figured out the possible issues and he seemed to think it was the bubbling as in your second example.

I've never been claustrophobic, now in my early 50's I'm getting there for some reason. My biggest fear is being trapped where I cannot move, slowly ending in a horrific death. Add the water and that is just the worst way to go!
It's crazy cuz I thought I was the only one that thought it was claustrophobic.

And here i thought that ( Rick Stanton & John Volanthen ) did the longest distance cave dive of (5.5 miles = 8.85 kilometers) in the Pozo Azul Cave System in Covenera, Spain.

I am not a cave diver & will never be. I developed my respect for the water as a surfer, in my youth. But that was above the surface. Sure, there were some close calls, but I never feared for my life. Personally, I view what you do as the ''risk equivalent'' of ''free soloing''. One misstep & the consequences shift from sketchy to life threatening. On your channel, you have documented the tragedies that have befallen some divers that you deemed as legends in the pursuit. Which tells me that, regardless of experience & preparedness, there is always unforeseen risks. I hope to continue to enjoy your content for years to come. Please stay safe.
