I strongly suggest 13 Songs, even if it's not an album. It works as a fantastic introduction to their work and has some of their best tracks on that album.
I love the huge difference between Mackaye lead tracks and Picciotto lead tracks. The Mackaye tracks tend to be more hardcore/Minor Threat punk (shout along) anthems whereas the Picciotto tracks tend to be more melodic/alternative style. And there's even examples where they switch styles. Love it! :)
Siamese dream, disintegration, a love supreme, you're living all over me, ege bamyasi (can), marquee moon...a review on any of these would be very cool
Fugazi is the best. This and 13 Songs are two of my favorite albums of all time. Funny to admit now, but I actually had FUGAZI on my license plate for a few years in the 90s.
Ya know, until just a few minutes ago, I thought that album was medicore. I relistened to it because of your review, and while i still not seeing it as a "classic", i realized its a pretty good album
hey man could you please review what you want? this is supposed to be 'what you think are classics' week so lets leave the choosing up to you yeah? sweet thx
I think Red Medicine is my favorite but Repeater + 3 Songs is neck and neck with it honestly. It's too hard to choose. Definitely one of my favorite rock groups ever, definitely one of my favorite albums. Glad you reviewed this one.
Ian (for good reason) usually gets props for being Fugazi personified but honestly, as a huge Rites of Spring fan, you cannot fuck with Guy's lyrics and delivery.. Love his approach. Fugazi are sick.
definitely a final statement where everything comes together, songwriting and sound. It’s a great album. I like RM and EH but it feels a bit like waning or straggling, then comes The Argument.
can we stop blurting out obvious choices like Kid A/Darkside of the Moon/Nevermind/etc... there are a LOT of really easy to pick "classic" albums. the Beatles, Radiohead, Nirvana and Pink Floyd (and everything else people keep commenting) are pretty widely accepted modern classics and are frequently discussed as being such. Anthony doesnt need to chime in for more people to figure it out. if you live in modern times and haven't formulated some opinion of those bands on your own you're probably living under a rock. its more useful and interesting to review "classics" that not everyone has already heard before, rather than all standing around jacking off together to how good Kid A was.
Fugazi is the soundtrack to my life and Repeater came out when I was 17 - absolutely massive for me. Every album became a favourite as their changes of direction seemed to mirror where I was in my life...
Love, love, LOVE this band. Love their albums, their songs, their live shows, their every breath.Love this review, too! Yes, Repeater is their 1st proper album but I tend to root for Margin Walker EP (came out the year before, right?) as something just as monumental. Also, used to listen to In On The Kill Taker for years and years...today, I just can't decide which album is best - this is the only band I know that I think is virtually flawless...
Better review all of these one day: At The Drive-In - Relationship Of Command Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade Slint - Spiderland Big Black - Songs About Fucking
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Life is good when someone recognizes the talents of this band. Thought people had forgot. I still have In On The Kill Taker on repeat 20 years later. For you young punks and hardcore etc. out there, your heroes were influenced by this band. . . if they had any taste at all that is. Great way to start the new year off my man.
I honestly don't think there has been a more innovative figure in punk and hardcore than Ian Mackaye. Even today, he's pushed the boundaries of the ideologies that the scene and movement had to offer. He forced more melodic structures into the music, really warping it and changing it into what really can only be considered "post hardcore", as you say, in its truest form. Even so, he still keeps that DIY attitude and ethic at heart. The code of punk and hardcore are really at the root and core of his being, whether his music "sounds" like anything from those genres or not. The DC scene was really very phenomenal in the 80s and beyond for what it did to bring punk in so many different ways, but I don't think we would have gotten as far as we did with bands like Rites of Spring or Dag Nasty if it weren't for Ian Mackaye being right there alongside those bands. It's been clear to me that Ian was just do damn jaded with the violence and destruction of the punk scene. I think a lot of people where in DC hardcore felt like this, though, which is why it advanced as much as it did in such a short period of time. Ian Mackaye is a Darwinist of the punk movement, where he actively kept the ideals of punk alive, but forced it to evolve in ultimately unique ways that we really hadn't seen before or since what Fugazi would become. Even so, the dude still rips. He still stays humble. He still doesn't care about merch or how much money his music makes. All he cares about is the passion of music and the message that he's presenting. He's actually got another band today, called Coriky. They're set to their first album here in a month or so and I can't tell you how excited I am for it. Ian still believes in what he's doing with the art and expression of his music over 30 years later -- and that's more punk rock than any of the shit the Sex Pistols or the Ramones ever did (not to call them out or say they weren't truly punk or anything, but damn did they lose their impact quickly. Ian straddles the line between underground, indie, and mainstream, and still maintains his integrity).
Personally I'd consider In on the Killtaker my favorite Fugazi album, but Repeater is undeniably up there. Then again, there is no such thing as a "bad" Fugazi record. You should review Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crimes, such a great record.
This is totally parasocial but I think if you really wanna understand Fantano and his taste look no further than Fugazi. Clearly fugazi has influenced Fantano more than any other band or artist. Whether that be the shaved head, straight edge and vegan lifestyle, or the fact that he’s a bass player. I think Fantano if he had to name a favorite band of all time it would probably be Fugazi.
I stumbled on this thinking "Who would review a legend album and know more than me", cool, you happily surprised me and thanks for your great review, I think I will watch more of your videos, again thanks for your actually cool review!
Your reviews are so seemingly effortlessly thorough, delightfully so. If I want to know about a band, you're the condensed Wikipedia of every practical band
I love this band, my favorite might be The Argument. I was pretty disappointed that they didn't do any more albums after that, but what a great album to end on!

Fugazi's one of my favorite bands ever. I'm sure you know what that means exactly to a person. I think it would be cool to hear you review some of the fringe-ish fugazi albums that you might not be all for from the get-go. The Argument had a different sound, I don't hear people talk about End Hits very often even though I think it's very very solid. Also, just to say, the Furniture EP is probably my favorite Fugazi release (so hard to say with certainty). It seems like they let themselves mess around more on that and it's so dirty and high-energy. Even for them. Thanks for the review!
Television- Marquee Moon Public Enemy- It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back Slint- Spiderland Funkadelic- Maggot Brain Liz Phair- Exile in Guyville DO IT!!!

In On The Kill Taker is massively underated, used to be my fav Fugazi record. tied with Repeater and if u considered 13 songs a record, all 3 tied. End Hits and Red Medicine are great too.
Hey Anthony, could you please review Doppelganger by the Fall of Troy for your next classics week? It is a clear classic and the missing link between the mainstream post-hardcore we're seeing today and the raw and noisy experimental post-hardcore in the 90s.
Fugazi is.... i respect them so much. I love their music and the philosophy they have followed. The values and issues their music is putting in front of you. The harmony between pure roughness and melody... I love this band, truly. Happy to hear there are more people who listen to Fugazi, since in my surroundings I haven't found not even a single person who have ever heard them.
I'm wondering what you thought of Alexisonfire, one of my favorite bands which is apparently labelled "post hardcore". Otherwise love these classic week reviews, I often find myself liking the albums you rate well, and discovering all of these awesome albums is pretty fun.
@@superunknown2812 underrated?? Or maybe it’s cause I’m Canadian and they were huge up here. Maybe they are the tragically hip for the mid -2000s alternative kids.
Pailhead was another big project up to the formation of Fugazi. Ian’s project with Al Jourgensen that combined Industrial Metal and Industrial Rock with Hardcore!
Thanks for mentioning Red Medicine! I’ve always felt that album is under appreciated!? The only time I saw them was on that album’s tour, & they were ferocious!...Totally SLAYED the little hall in our little town! I do still like Repeater though...FUN to listen to on a big car stereo! Fucked up, Got ambushed, Zipped in!
Do you have other Fugazi reviews? I'd pay to hear you review their album The Argument. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the common belief that this band got better with every record they did.
Could you review Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots? It's one of my personal favorites, and i would like to hear what you have to say about it. An album by the Stooges would be cool too.
I know you have probably already decided the albums for classic week, but I think a review of your fave Bjork album would be really cool just for consideration.
I see In on the kill taker in the background there lol. That's the best fugazi I record IMO, but hey I appreciate the review. You could do a whole other review on the members post-fugazi work, esp the evens and joe lallys solo stuff. I'd like to see that
Just yes to this review. The complex rhythm section would play a larger role in their music later, but this was the album of the '80s-'90s. Just classic hardcore/punk
This is a great album review! I posted some alternative karaoke lyrics in my karaoke section for fans, thought I’d let u know even tho this is an older video. Kids loved this album back in highschool. You explain it perfectly here. Anyhow got Turnover redid for portland 90’s kids… repeater next. Down on a farm is also in there, & some alternative lyrics to Em’s new album from Melly Mel & some other songs.
I literally just started listening to this band because of an interview with the lead singer of Jimmy Eat World saying they are one of the best bands ever. I’m really getting into them.
Thanks for suggesting this album. I never paid any attention to Fugazi before. I had this plan: if a band was ever the favorite of someone who beat me up in middle school, I would never listen to them. So much for that now, lol. Only problem with your video is that you make this album sound so much fun that I didn't bother watching the rest of your video and went on to stream it immediately. So... good job?
Never forget riding my bike with some friends to get this album on tape in middle school - saw them a year or two later with Nation of Ulysses. Phenomenal band.
What the needledrop and especially CAL-assics week is all about: Finding new music you never heard of before. Thanks for indirectly introducing me to Gang of Four
This is my favourite Fugazi album, that might be because it was my introduction to the band. It was also the first album I bought on vinyl. I love turnover so much.
Good review and landmark album. Was my first Fugazi album as a teen. You are quite intelligent on music and artists. I just wish you didn't do sporadic outbursts through your reviews and other antics in the videos. It honestly takes away from or discredits the reviews in a small way. Not being rude but thought you might like to know. Overall stellar review.
Here's some 'maybes' for ya: Slowdive - Just for a Day anything by Lilys (preferably The 3-Way) Venom - Welcome to Hell Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (or Closer) anything by The Doors Smoke 'em if Ya Got 'Em - Reverend Horton Heat anything by 2pac anything by T.S.O.L.
Just started getting into the band, the guys in Clutch kept noting them as an influence on their music, so I had to give them a chance. So I got 13 Songs to start off with , this will be my next listen!
Charlie Bow And why is that? And why do you feel compelled to use "u" when you're the one telling me that I don't have a brain? Why don't you have a brain?
1, 2, 3, REPEATER!
Steven that’s what I was gonna write. Bummed.
ONE TWO THREEEEEE
REPEATER
Iconic
Hey! You cracked the password to my first yahoo account! Haha
1! 2! 3! go!!
I strongly suggest 13 Songs, even if it's not an album. It works as a fantastic introduction to their work and has some of their best tracks on that album.
This guy has already listened to that for sure. He has Kill Taker on vinyl as you can see.
How is 13 songs not considerd an album?
El Duderino Because it's actually a compilation of 2 EPs, 7 Songs and Margin Walker.
IAmTheBestMang I think he was recommending it to the audience and not Anthony
@Dylan Nimrick omg yess, promises too
"a forgotten stepping stone" THAT WAS A MINOR THREAT PUN WASN'T IT

i'm not your stepping stooone

*FUGAZI IS EVERYTHING*
I love the huge difference between Mackaye lead tracks and Picciotto lead tracks. The Mackaye tracks tend to be more hardcore/Minor Threat punk (shout along) anthems whereas the Picciotto tracks tend to be more melodic/alternative style. And there's even examples where they switch styles. Love it! :)
Imho the difference between good punk music and GREAT punk music is melody. and fugazi is a prime example of what can be done with the genre!
This review got me into fugazi about 2 years ago and now they are one of my favourite bands, thanks Anthony!
Siamese dream, disintegration, a love supreme, you're living all over me, ege bamyasi (can), marquee moon...a review on any of these would be very cool
Matthew Britt He should review A classic Dinosaur jr. album.
Glad you clarified which Ege Bamyasi ;)
It's been nine years and we still got none of that
Dude I never realised that you sat down. Unsubbed.
A lot of people years later seem to not realize this either as well.
prescient
Fugazi is the best. This and 13 Songs are two of my favorite albums of all time. Funny to admit now, but I actually had FUGAZI on my license plate for a few years in the 90s.
Awesome!!! My all time favorite album, & band (of course), of all time too! License plate, thats great! :) Fugazi forever \m/
Review: Fugazi - Repeater Fugazi - Repeater ALBUM REVIEW
Ya know, until just a few minutes ago, I thought that album was medicore.
I relistened to it because of your review, and while i still not seeing it as a "classic", i realized its a pretty good album
Yeah! Love me some Fugazi! How about some Ah Um or Oh Yeah by Charles Mingus for classics week?
Oooh, I have a good suggestion for an album. The Virgin Suicides by Air
Review Stone Roses self titled album please. :)
hey man could you please review what you want? this is supposed to be 'what you think are classics' week so lets leave the choosing up to you yeah?
Yep Guy is the iconic singer for Fugazi IMO, when Ian sings it's a treat and it's like "cmon let's go!" but Guy was the defining vocalist.
I had never realised until now that he is sitting on a chair.
whoa!!
That just mind fucked me......
I thought he was hardcore and stacked vinyl shelves on top of each other.
So that's how Ian MacKaye is pronounced.
ii121 So that's how Guy Picciotto is pronounced
I swear I’ve heard both for both
You should do Operation Ivy-Energy, or something by the Minutemen.
every Fugazi album is my favorite Fugazi album
but if I HAD to choose, I'd go with The Arguement
JUST
THEY'RE SO GOOD UGH ❤
The Argument is a great album!
Mine too

LedZeppelin03 I love Radiohead.
ALOT OF PEOPLE DOESNT LIKE RADIOHEAD, THEY ARE NOT THAT GREAT
I love radiohead, but yeah the constant circlejerk is annoying.
OK Computer and Kid A are the most overrated albums of all time

The algorithm brought me here 7 years later. I love Fugazi, and I love this review. Excellent work.
one of the most consistent discogs ever
You should review Unwound, specifically Leaves Turn Inside You.
JayKayTV yes
Best indie rock record period
I've heard through the grapevine that he's not the biggest Unwound fan...
This is a really important album for me. Got it when I was a teenager, stuck with me when a lot of my teen music faded. Thanks for making this.
My bassist told me to listen to Fugazi, just because. I listened to this first and loved every minute of it
Better review all of these one day:
At The Drive-In - Relationship Of Command
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade
Slint - Spiderland
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
I agree. He's already reviewing Spiderland so that's one.
I prefer Atomizer over Songs About Fucking
+rockkiller124 ALL ALBUMS HE SHOULD REVIEW
Max Seuberlich I could not agree more.
+rockkiller124 AT THE DRIVE IN IS THE SHIT

How about reviewing Sonic Youth?

Clean Kill is the first single from Coriky
The album was delayed cause of the current situation
Makes a lot of sense, i never thinked that way

I got in on the kill taker when it first came out not knowing what to expect.
Needless to say most of their albums up to end hits were my favorite for quite some time. Now they all hold great memories.
Never really got into steady diet or the argument, etc.
One of my favorite albums of all time! I was lucky enough to see them live three times in the 90's.
Could you review Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division? I'd love to see you talk about that record man.
***** He loves you.

Pseudo Music i was looking for a 13 songs comment. i thought to myself "wait, wasnt that one their debut?"

Man, this is a classic. Don't have numbers how many times this one has been played on my stereo

You should review Butthole Surfers - Physic Powerless for classics week.

Yes..so true!! Much Respect StephopalOpal aka Big Mama of New Orleans Louisiana

This edition of classics week is on point.
Great stuff.. one of my personal favourite albums.
Thanks for a fine and quite accurate disection.
Well done.
Keep up the good work.
Someone has read Our Band Could Be Your Life...
Love love love that book!
What the needledrop and especially CAL-assics week is all about: Finding new music you never heard of before.
Thanks for indirectly introducing me to Gang of Four
This is my favourite Fugazi album, that might be because it was my introduction to the band. It was also the first album I bought on vinyl. I love turnover so much.
thanks for the Rites of Spring mention
Good review and landmark album. Was my first Fugazi album as a teen. You are quite intelligent on music and artists. I just wish you didn't do sporadic outbursts through your reviews and other antics in the videos. It honestly takes away from or discredits the reviews in a small way. Not being rude but thought you might like to know. Overall stellar review.
Im gonna get this album ASAP, this band kinda slipped passed me in my musical adventures in my youth somehow and I never got into them.
Here's some 'maybes' for ya:
Slowdive - Just for a Day
anything by Lilys (preferably The 3-Way)
Venom - Welcome to Hell
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (or Closer)
anything by The Doors
Smoke 'em if Ya Got 'Em - Reverend Horton Heat
anything by 2pac
anything by T.S.O.L.
Just started getting into the band, the guys in Clutch kept noting them as an influence on their music, so I had to give them a chance. So I got 13 Songs to start off with , this will be my next listen!
Man i sure hope you get payed at least a little by all these reviews you put up, You have put me on to a lot of good music!
My favorite of theirs is still their last one, The Argument. But this one is probably my second favorite.
It's a tie between this and their album Argument for my favorite album of all time.
u don't have a brain..
Charlie Bow And why is that? And why do you feel compelled to use "u" when you're the one telling me that I don't have a brain? Why don't you have a brain?
HeroicHero1 The Argument is awesome. My favorite is either Repeater or End Hits, but The Argument is way up there.
