If you blow too hard, the loose piece of the reed will not have enough power to start vibrating. It will keep being blown away so that the air can pass through. If you blow softer than the flexion of that small part will be sufficient to overcome the power and start vibrating.
So glad I found your video. I recently bought a Bawu and didn't know what it was. I tried to play like a western flute and couldn't get any sound. Thanks so much for your teaching and inspiration. So far I can only get it to play 1 note but working on it.
Dear you, thank you for sharing... I just bought a Bawu, but, i wonder why, mine has 4 holes under, at the bottom of the bamboo ? I can't reach these holes, maybe it's for painting the bawu, or to hang the flute ? Thank you again ! With Love from France ;-)
Those are tuning holes, they are always left open. The idea is that the maker drills holes to bring the fundamental pitch up and get the instrument in tune.
Have you ever tried the Vertical Bawu? I got both the transverse and the vertical, i can play the transverse just fine, but the verticle makes a grating/gravely sound on the 'do' and 're' notes, and only them. All the other notes, both higher and lower play just fine.
i have a bawu flute but have extra 2 holes at the end and thats make it 10 holes in all... do i need to cover the extra 2 holes at the end of the bamboo? and its really hard to blow it makes my breath away ejjejej
My Bawu also has extra holes on the otherside...I have figured out a way to reach the 7th hole as i play but I cant get any other sounds at the minute lol i need more help and practice haha
I'm looking at random flutes to get from a christmas gift card on Amazon. My goal was to get something weird, so I'm looking at exotic flutes to learn how to play. I'm looking at a Dizi, a Shakuhachi, a gourd flute, Kalimba, lyre, and recently a Bawu. Any possible recommendations? I have no previous experience with a woodwind (I'm a bass player :D). Also, I thought a Bawu was vertical? This lovely flute looks kinda like a Dizi to me. Unless I'm insane. Which is very possible.
+Mosspath297 There is a bawa style that is horizontal , U shape, or even vertical. The only thing that makes it a bawu is a "reed" inside the thing that made it sound very unique. You can see the blowing method is different too. Bawu blowing is like panda eating bamboo, you have to puff your cheeks and shit to get the air pushed in. Bawu is much easier to learn than most dizi and xiao. If you are looking for something weird, this one is nice!
I have notice that once you get the Dizi at home and practice making the sound through the mouthpiece, learn the fingering and and the scale you pretty much on your own. I mean nobody teaches you the music, where to place the fingers to make the music. I would recommend you go with a american flutes where you have books with music sheets and is more structured.
I never knew a chinese flute like this (with a brass reed inside??) existed... that's very cool. the low notes sounded strange, but i guess that's the reed vibrating that I am hearing... not a big fan of the low registers, but the higher register sounds very beautiful.
Hello Mak Jo Si, thank you for sharing. Please advise, I just bought a bawu - you inspired me hahah - and there is an oval plastic structure on top of the square reed valve as the one you use to make your video. Is this oval plastic to be removed? The glue is permanent so I would better listen to your advise first. Or are ther two kinds of Bawu i.e. with and without oval plastic? What are the difference then? Thanks in advance.
hello man, nice video. I bought one but i cant play different notes, all the time sounds one note (i put my fingers in different holes by the way) I have to refound mi bawu??? thanks men
It could be that your air flow isn't correct. If you blow slightly too hard or too soft, the reed won't vibrate properly and the notes won't form. Also, are you making sure to keep the thumb hole covered while playing? Having all fingers off the holes will play the highest note, but again it is only if your breath and air flow are correct. Sorry for the late answer, but I only recently saw your comment
wow, thank you for this video. i am also looking for a very rare Chinese double reed pipe, it's called Bobo. do you know any information on it? i couldn't find anything online.
you're correct, it's not a chinese name, it's a double reed pipe, originally from Babylon where it was called Embubu. but now nowhere in the world it's found. i read in the book ''Sons of Heaven, Brothers of Nature: The Naxi of Southwest China'' page 216 that there is an instrument name bobo in china. i suspect maybe it's related to embubu. do you know where i can learn more about this instrument?
Thank you for your instrument reviews, love them and the instruments with them. Like a panda eating bamboo ;) haha made me laugh. I'm going to have to get a Bawu now, such a beautiful sounding instrument!
+James Tiberi Hahahaha it is very funny looking indeed!
I wish you were still making videos. I love how you teach and also the way you play.
Your demonstration was very helpful to me. Thank you so much for posting this video!

beautiful man youve inspired me to buy one.
Beautiful sound ! Thank you !
Hi, is the embouchure of it similar to a recorder?
i heard that bawu flute only have one octave. So how to play most of the songs that have second octave?
Hey buddy, you gotta show the thin reed and how and where it goes. Without it, no sound.
Have you ever tried the Vertical Bawu? I got both the transverse and the vertical, i can play the transverse just fine, but the verticle makes a grating/gravely sound on the 'do' and 're' notes, and only them. All the other notes, both higher and lower play just fine.
I agree. Have the two types, and the vertical type with the metal sound chamber is more difficult. The placement of the reed is absolutely critical!
You have helped me much, the hulusi and bawu are different and alike
Jesse Miller Great~ Yes they are indeed very different in character and sound!
i have a bawu flute but have extra 2 holes at the end and thats make it 10 holes in all... do i need to cover the extra 2 holes at the end of the bamboo? and its really hard to blow it makes my breath away ejjejej
Thanks for taking the time to make this great video. I learned a lot!
My Bawu also has extra holes on the otherside...I have figured out a way to reach the 7th hole as i play but I cant get any other sounds at the minute lol i need more help and practice haha
the extra ones are for tuning
How long does the reed last?

Hello! pls how do I learn how to play the Ba wu from scratch, any tutorials??? I have actually bought mine and started learning on my own. Thanks
Jesus christ from a dizi to a bawu, I'M GETTING ADDICTED
Do you have these instructions in Chinese? My son speaks Chinese and that may help him.
Bawu is an instrument of my Hmong(Miao) people and other minorities in China.
That is better than the Saxophone hegemony in terms of price range and the compact portability with the Pentatonic scales on its package
👍💯🇵🇭☺️💝❤️

Sandy Yudhana its not to be removed, it's normal and that is the place where you put your mouth on, like a mouthpiece kinda thing
Oh hi there, thank you Mak Jo So, thank you for sharing and teaching :)
