I've started "watching" various costubers while working on assorted projects, mostly embroidery and sewing right now; Since I'm new to those hobbies, I spend most of time looking at my handiwork, rather than watching the screen. That said, I do periodically glance up, and looking up right in time to catch you drawing a mustache and horns on the gentleman in the banyan was perfection. I actually and literally laughed out loud. Thank you.
I know one is not supposed to wash silks and wools but I ALWAYS machine wash and machine dry all of my fabrics on the harshest settings no matter what the material is made from. That’s so any shrinking and textural changes happen before I sew anything with it. I always buy a single yard before bulk purchases and test it out to make sure it won’t “ruin” the fabric or the effect I’m going for though. Ain’t nobody got the time or the money for constant dry cleaning of “special” fabrics. The only exception to this for me is Moiré whose glorious patterning will simply disappear at the sight of water 🤧. Which is MUCH to my chagrin 😢. This video was so flipping helpful thank you!! ❤️❤️
Ooh, I do need one! And I basically live in my nighties (because getting dressed is a bother, and why bother if you’re going to be spending most of the day in bed anyway? Bras are not comfortable to wear in bed!). But I do also have care workers come in, and while I’m okay with them seeing me in my nighties (mostly chemises and slips that I make do double duty- because it’s important to have a little prettiness to help your mood), it would be great to have something that I can throw over the top- and something that isn’t warm! I live in Australia, where it’s known for being pretty hot (and for good reason, and climate change is only making it worse). And most dressing gowns these days are either winter ones (which are great, I love my mink blanket dressing gown!), or the thin summer ones are that polyester-satin type fabric, and they’re just way too hot to wear! So something that I can use during the 9 months of the year that it’s too warm for my dressing gown is a great idea! And to have it be something that is pretty... that would be the icing on the cake. Thank you so much for this idea! I’ll probably have to go with cotton (because it’s cheaper), but I’ll hopefully be able to find a nice light cotton with a pretty print, or in a nice colour. It’s definitely going on my (ever growing) project list! Thank you!
Just watched SnappyDragon's attempt & decided to come to the source - v pretty indeed. She too had trouble with the lining, but as I'm an old person who has been sewing since the dawn of creation, I've made those same mistakes long ago & often. I made a couple of suggestions for the construction process on SnappyDragon's comments section. You may find them helpful too. The Daleks also insisted that I subscribe.
This is lovely!! I would really appreciate another tutorial going into more detail on the lining, I think you explained it very well but my brain just won’t compute. Here’s to all of us leaving quarantine with banyans!!!
LoL, "Linen: NO!" Your banyan turned out beautifully, and they look so comfy, but a definite step up from my fuzzy zebra-striped hooded robe. I should probably make one...
Well done! I can't believe you hand stitched the whole garment....you have tremendous patience. I loved the finished result. So much more elegant than the bathrobe I schlep around in 😂 I might attempt something like this.
I've been eyeing the B&T pumpkin silk for a bit, with the idea to one day make a banyan out of it, because it's the perfect colour. And you're tempting me, I have to say. BUT I'm a baby sewer who's only ever made a pocket and a petticoat, and I might make a few shifts and stays before going onto working with silk... I'll definitely come back to this video when the time is right, though !
The little rectangle does some magic and creates the collar! It makes more sense once you’ve gotten the fabric in hand and tried it. Also, grab the pumpkin silk! They never hold on to pretty silk for long. Thank you!
@@WilloughbyRose Oh ! I'll have to rewatch the video to figure it out, because it looked to me as though you cut a square out only to fill that square in. As to the silk, shipping to Europe is somewhat prohibitive... I had also been eyeing that pumpkin to make a reproduction of the caraco worn on the Chocolate Girl Pastel, although I can't quite make out if it's gold or pumpkin. Decisions, decisions..
Staring at the rocks/random shit around my house thinking why have I never used them as weights before and all that time pinning because fashion school
Ahh, the benefits of being self taught! I have always thought pinning was a pain in the butt and generally avoid it at all costs. Also, why buy weights when you have crystals? 😝
This was so lovely! And I think that's a genius idea on the lining. I've been wanting to make a new dressing gown, but couldn't decide what style. Now I know!
New viewer! Found you during CoCoVid! I love this lounger and will have to try it. It's not like I don't have 30 bins of fabric just lying around....of course, most of it is quilting cottons and in half yards or fat quarters....so this might get interesting.
I’m planning on making a man’s banyan very soon - I have some Chinese silk brocade and some hand-printed Indian cotton chintz... Now I just need a decent-sized cutting table... but the owner of my friendly fabric shop is away on holiday... grr... Love your muttered comments at the end - me to a tee 😉 👍
Willoughby & Rose - well, give me time - it may be a bit of a slow haul... lol. Don’t know if it’s correct form to post a blog address... but mine’s adamathomeuk.blogspot.com
Excellent video! Full of good research and very usable techniques. Every time I had a question, the next minute you answered it, so well done! I will leave you with one comment: I adore the fact that you used a tiny Dalek for your fabric weight! Classy!
I too didn’t quite understand the neck bit.. yes I see the rectangle.. understood.. but how doe is turn into a shawl collar?.. it would be handy seeing you putting it on the model to show how it sits. .. otherwise very useful info.. thanks!
I really liked this video. I had never heard of a banyan so I learned something new, which I like to do each day! I am wondering where you got your fabric. I can never find the small flowery fabrics that the historical pieces are made from. Laura Ashley used to sell these patterned fabrics, but I think the brand changed direction. I hope you are proud of your banyan. It came out so pretty and love the bows! Thank you so much.
That looks really comfortable and put together at the same time :D I'll go now to look at how much fabric I have in my stash that can actually be used for something like this...
It is so beautiful! I hope you feel proud of what you accomplished. I also admire you sewing this all by hand. I'm not sure I would have the patience for that much handsewing. I am interested in where you found your fabric? I look all over for fabric with that size and type of print and am having no luck. Any guidance would be much appreciated.
The fabric is one of Colonial Williamsburg’s prints, though I’m not sure it’s currently in stock. Definitely check there, Renaissance Fabrics, and Burnley & Trowbridge for printed cottons and linens. That’s where I get 90% of my fabric. Also, thanks so much. I definitely didn’t always have this kind of patience!
PM me on IG for the gridded diagram! A pattern isn't super useful for this because it's so variable based on your height etc, so it's really just about knowing where to draw lines on the fabric.
Seam allowance is 1/4” - 1/2” depending on the location! The sleeves were simply pleated up and tacked down with a few stitches. The ribbon is pinned in place.
It’s the natural edge of the fabric, not the cut edge. If you look at 1 yard of fabric, you’d have 2 selvedges and 2 cut edges. I hope that makes sense!
This turned out so beautifully! I just finished my first B&T bedgown and want to make this now! I'm wondering how you did the sleeve finishing. Did I miss that in the tutorial or was it not in there?
This is definitely an imperfect tutorial as it was my first one, so you didn't miss anything! I just neglected to point that out. I'd love to redo this video in future, or make a follow up. Thanks!
Showed video to husband, he wanted to know if you were my daughter. Look like me when young, sew like me, sense of humor like me. Loved the video.

THIS WITH LEGGINGS IS ALL I'VE EVER WANTED. MUST PRACTICE SEWING SO I CAN MAKE MYSELF ONE
Yesss, excellent! This would be a great early project too, since it's so simple if you don't go overboard and line the whole thing.
Your channel was recommended by Sew Through Time. I love the fabrics you've used here.
Yup. 18th century loungwear is happening. [cue fabric research]
Your one was also super. Xxx

Sew sleeve extension prior to cutting the lining. Saves the step of doing the lining extension.
you have the most soothing voice for real

I would really like to redo this whole tutorial honestly!
I enjoyed this no end and was especially impressed with the Dalek fabric weight!

Leather bound journal, Dalek - equal opportunity pattern weights.
So true!
Well done! I can't believe you hand stitched the whole garment....you have tremendous patience. I loved the finished result. So much more elegant than the bathrobe I schlep around in 😂 I might attempt something like this.
I definitely recommend making one! Hand stitching not required. :D

I don't really get what that square of fabric inserted at the neck does, though. And where does the shawl collar get added ?

That fabric is beautiful.
I love your Dalek pattern weight. Thanks for doing this it is the first one I have seen made.
Brilliant! Especially how you attached the lining!
Thank you! It's one of my favorite 18thc sewing techniques. So fast!
Wishing you good health in the New Year. I too get enjoyment out of hand stitching.

gorgeous fabric!
I definitely want to make one *ignores large pile of quilts to finish*

OH it turned out so lovely!
You have a Dalek as a pattern weight...just when I thought I couldn’t love you more!!! Seriously, though, I love the banyan, and now must make one,
I am completely inspired. Thank you
You are a treasure! I really love your videos. You are open, honest, and fun! What more does anyone need??

Well now I'd like to see a quilted banyan! Welcome to the channel. :D

I have a 1970s pattern that is so similar to a banyan, except with shoulder seams and a more rectangular back bottom edge.
Great Tutorial. Well Done. I love that technique to cover the raw edges. Genius.
I need more photos of the finished banyan!!!

Beautiful work! And now I NEED a banyan!
Yes you do!
Can't believe this is your first tutorial! I am impressed!
That's beautiful fabric.
I love your pattern weights! 💙
Thank you!
Remarkable!,
I absolutely LOVE how you stitched the lining in, I’m going to have to try this next time I line a garment

I hope you make one! They’re so great
So pretty!!
Thanks for posting this tutorial! It looks doable so I might need to make one 😀 Love the Dalek pattern weight btw.
Well done. It’s beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
😍 it is splendid!
I've been wanting to sew a banyan for a while, this will definitely help with the process ^^
Is this 60 or 45 inch fabric? How does the magical folding work so you can cut out in one piece?? I just can't picture it.
It is so beautiful! I hope you feel proud of what you accomplished. I also admire you sewing this all by hand. I'm not sure I would have the patience for that much handsewing. Hi Cait! :D Did you say you were going to have a pattern for this banyan? I think I need to make myself one. LOL
PM me on IG for the gridded diagram! A pattern isn't super useful for this because it's so variable based on your height etc, so it's really just about knowing where to draw lines on the fabric.
@@WilloughbyRose will do!
Can I ask what seam allowance you used
And how did you do the sleeves with the ribbon?
Seam allowance is 1/4” - 1/2” depending on the location! The sleeves were simply pleated up and tacked down with a few stitches. The ribbon is pinned in place.
Excellent presentation. Needs attention on sound quality.
What is a salvage, for those of us who are sewing babies 👶?
It’s the natural edge of the fabric, not the cut edge. If you look at 1 yard of fabric, you’d have 2 selvedges and 2 cut edges. I hope that makes sense!

Specifically I mean the bow and gathers or pleats you did.
This is definitely an imperfect tutorial as it was my first one, so you didn't miss anything! I just neglected to point that out. I'd love to redo this video in future, or make a follow up. Thanks!
Where did you find the fabric and what kind of linen is it specifically?
The fabric is from colonial Williamsburg and the linen is just lightweight Irish linen.
I have watched this video several times, trying to get the measurements down. What is the WOF you are using?
I believe it was 48"
I NEED ONE!!! I will not be content until I have one of these. ❤️❤️❤️ Love your fabric choice, the colors are beautiful!
Thanks so much! I highly recommend making one of these, and please share if you do!
