I think Dan's favorite fish species is the killifish. Excellent video Dan thank you for sharing and teaching me about different types of killifish species in Nigeria.
I do love me a good killifish!
I actually recently found a stream with the blue lampeye things, in south africa actually
Wats the name of floatong pant?.tank's and congratulation👍
yh i have gardneri and amieti's and they eat anything that i put in there
Yep! Killifish are less complicated then than they are made out to be.
Nice Tank, beautiful fish. I have lots of tanks with killifish. The problem with having Moos and a lot of plants is that they will lay the eggs in the Moos or plants. I have the tanks very similar to yours. About the food, nothing better than live food. They will breed a lot better. A lot of times the adults don’t eat the fry, that’s because I keep them alone. They don’t like high temperatures.
Nice video, keep going, all the best.
Howdy Jose,
Glad you liked the tank and the fish and thanks for the insightful comments.
Your setup sounds great for your purposes. My purposes are perhaps different. Most folks who I sell to want to keep pretty fish in an aquarium, they are not necessarily worried about breeding them. When I breed them, I take 10-20 females out of the display tank, put them in individual 5.5 gallon tanks, and plump them up. Them I add a mop and a male to each tank and get a lot of eggs at once. I much prefer to raise hundreds of fish in a spawn than get a few a day and have to raise them in numerous small containers.
And yes, live food is the best for breeding. However it is not necessary to use it to breed...I've bred lots of killies on flakes and pellets. And yes, lots of killies don't like high temps, but there are many species which thrive in high temps (pupfish, aphanius, and some others). It is such a large and varied group of fishes that it is hard to speak about them in generalities.
I think there is a big difference in how a true killie-nut like yourself generally keeps them and how I do. Both ways work, it is just a matter of what each individual setup is trying to accomplish. I'd love to see pics or vids of your setup sometime. What I am trying to do in this video is help folks who want to keep killies, but don't have the typical killi-closet setup, understand that they can be kept like pretty much any peaceful community fish as long as a few basics are meant.
I'm going to head over and see if I can find anything on your channel :).
Thanks again for watching and commenting!
Dan
New sub here and I've been fish geek since the 80's! so glad I found your channel and excellent overview of one of my bucket list species!
Howdy Buff,
Glad you found the channel and like the vid on the killies!
Awesome video on the aphyosemion killi. What kind of water parameters do you keep these guys in as far as temp, ph, etc.
Very nice video. My love killy fish fundulopanchx nigerianus Macurdy , afiosimeon striatum.
Those are all great species. I hope they do well for you!
Woot! I’m the second one here. ❤️ when you did your room tour these caught my eye! Couldn’t wait for this intro to this fish!
If I may make a suggestion about your filming? Turn the lights in your room off and leave the fish tank lights on. You’ll get less glare off the front of your tanks and maybe easier for your camera to focus on the fish.
Thanks for the suggestion! What I really need to do besides turning off the lights is to drop some cover between the light and the top of the tank so it does not glare out as much. Even with the room lights off, the room is bright from just the fish tank lights.
What kind of floating plants do u have..
That is water sprite: getgills.com/product.detail/1072
Love killies! These guys are great. Really like this setup
Thanks, Fishman! The killies seem to like it too.
Have you tried treating velvet with flubendazole? It's much easier on your fish than copper based meds andjust as effective.
Larry,
I've never heard or read of treating velvet with flubendazole. What dosage do you use? How many times and how frequently do you repeat the dosage? Basically, in your experience, how is it done?
@@DansFish
Hi Dan, Here is an article by Charles Harrison, Ph.D wrote a comprehensive article on the various uses of flubendazole in this Journal of the American Killifish Association which I think you'll find helpful.
www.inkmkr.com/Fish/FlubendazoleArticle.pdf
I started keeping and breeding Killies in 1968, just a few years after the founding of the AKA. I had wild A. dayi back in 1970 but never did come across them again until viewing your UA-cam coverage.
I've lost count but I've bred over 200 species of killies over my time. It was really nice to see these fish again.
I'm better known as "apistomaster" especial on planetcatfish.com as I was selling hundreds of homegrown Peckoltia compta AKA Peckoltia L134 during the middle 2000's and as a breeder of wild Discus until illness forced me out of the hobby.

Check out Charles' site for info about ordering hard to find fish meds. www.inkmkr.com/Fish/
Thanks for the info, Larry. Much appreciated.
They are pretty cool fish except for the name which I won’t destroy trying to say it. My hard part about keeping these guys would be in getting them passed the wife’s hawk like eyes she just cleaned the fish ruin and told me no more
Time for flowers, chocolates, and wine.
Ah-Fee-O-Simi-Uhn-Cali-Urn-O-Goon, as an aside Ogun is both a river, a city , a god and a people
I need more tanks. LOL
Always, Pam. Always.
Nice fish and info, well done, you have to feed them frozen black mosquito to get them fat and ready to spawn.
Kil or Kille is an old Dutch word that means water channel/creek, that's were the got their name from.
If you are interested a nice interview of a fellow countryman Frans Vermeulen. ua-cam.com/video/XA8sUkC-ReA/v-deo.html
Howdy Populier,
I've watched Ivan's interview with Frans many times. Ivan's stuff is one of a kind!
Mosquito larvae are great for conditioning fish to spawn, but they will also spawn on many other kinds of food as well.
Yeah, those guys are both great, sure thing, blackworms/tubifex are also nice the feed, i even feed mine buffalo worms, just keep the food varied, Happy Thanksgiving!
My name is Michael btw:-)
:)
Love killi fish, I'd love to see you keeping Blue Gularis or a species of SA
I have ONE lone Hypsolebias male right now. I've raised many, many blue gularis over the years. They are a fish I plan to have again in the near future...one of my favorites! I tend to be more partial to Nothos than to SA annuals. Do you keep any killies?
@@DansFish I do
FG P82
AAustrale gold
AB Volcanum
Spec. RiuXingu
Moema Hel.
FL Flag
Elassoma Gilberti
Clown killi and Norm.Lampeye
@@DansFish have yet to venture into hardcore annuals but I'm finding a knack with pupfish
@@bossbullyboy195 That is a nice list of species! If I did get into SAA's, those Spec. Rio Xingu would be at the top of my list along with Hypsolebias magnificus.
