  • The first time digging with the Bucyrus Erie after its rescue from the tree patch. This is both the first time this machine has dug since it was brought back to life, and it is the first time I have ever dug with a cable machine; quite the learning curve!

The videos of this shovel are great, I know it takes time, money, effort, and knowhow but it's amazing watching these videos on this old machine being pulled out of the place that it sat for so long. I wish more of these machines could be saved instead of going by the way of the torch or just letting them rot forever, it's pieces of American history, thanks for sharing this, I'm so glad the old girl is getting lots of love and being used for what she was made to do, it's funny watching something that old be resurrected and put back to work and she's out there just chugging right along not blowing tons of smoke or coughing and gagging.....pretty amazing.

I used to operate my Dads old mechanical controlled Ruston Bucyrus 22RB Face Shovel when I was only 11 years old in the West Coast of Scotland....and I was always playing on this thing every day after school and at weekends except Sundays.
He sold this 22 and purchased a newer one which was a Ruston 22 but an ICD with air controllers.....I was 14 years old now and it took me a few new ropes before I could manage to operate it without breaking ropes as you had no feel of the clutches etc as you did with the old mechanical controls.
Due to the ICD controls and me being a novice and constantly breaking expensive ropes I also learnt very quickly how to change ropes.
We sold this RB 22 ICD when I turned 19 and we then purchased a used Manitowoc 4100 VICON 200 ton Lift Crane again mechanical and a real effort to operate but what a machine to use it was fantastic and could out lift any Electro/Hydro Crane of the same spec.

This is totally awesome and a major Flash back as a kid. Those where the go to machine to dig out the hole for the basements of houses in my city and neighborhood up till the yearly 60’s. I new a ; new house was going in just by hearing that distinct sound of the 6 cylinder gasoline engine in them. I don’t know what brand of motor they used but they all had the same sound. Then the smell inside them. I’d go inside them after the workers went home for the day and they all had the same smell of grease and oil inside 🤪😂😂😂👍. Even the house I live in today the basement was dug out by one of those machines because my parents built the house when mom was pregnant with me. Then there would be a line of Mack single axle dump trucks with the small box that might hold 2 yards of dirt to haul away, somewhere-?. A lot of times it went to the garbage dump to back fill over the garbage.

If you're near Bowling Green, Ohio, go see the HCEA national show Sept. 13-15. They have everything playing in the dirt.

Drott was the first hydraulic excavator in the Detroit area. It would have a hydraulic line leak on a daily basis. My Grandfather never got the hang of them, preferred the cable. My Dad could pound a stake in the ground with a Northwest cable machine, using the teeth of the bucket. He was pretty good.

Do you know where that drag shovel was actually bought and used that before you got your hands on it did it work at a Gravel Pit or did it do some kind of other Earth worked would be cool to know the history

I don't know, sadly. But I do have a lead on who the former owner may have been. I still need to follow up on that to see if he knows any history on the machine.

So I thought y'all were ACTUALLY going to really restore this Bucyrus and not just take it to a new spot.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you saved her but I mean with a minimum amount of time and money she could look almost brand new again.
