Just saw a few of these for sale at Lowe’s in west palm beach and the fact they have a fragrance really piqued my interest. Watched this before making the decision to purchase 🥰
Hahahaaaaa I just got a brassavola nodosa tonight at the first ever orchid society meeting I went to. So excited for it to bloom!! and to smell it :) They also gave us a free yellow or a free red cattleya for everyone involved.
woaaaaw look who's the new species grower in town :D you'll love it I'm sure, just treat it like a Catt :P saw the vid on the new orchids too, will make a comment soon about the kingianum ;)
I know.... it's all happening so fast haha!! Truth is, I don't know how to treat a cattleya!! I set up some transluscent shower curtains to block my window light and shade them slightly, and I've got my den kingianum, den nobile, cattleya, and brassavola all there on the window sill together. I hope they'll be alright with the light - I'm so scared to burn orchids in the sun haha! Thanks in advance for leaving a comment!! :)
I totally agree with you. I bought this one at ebay last year. And it started to develop a spike in December. It has five leaves. But my o my. This tiny little flower, fills my kitchen with a fantastic smell. Only in the dark. Because, when I turn on the light, the fragrance will fade. So in my belief, why smell when its light. I LOVE Brassavolas! If your growing area has high humidity they do very well mounted but pots and small baskets like you use work well too.Thank you for the wonderful video.
Hi Dante. 25% is difficult for any orchid. An ultrasonic humidifier can make a huge difference in your growing environment. I would definitely not try mounting plants with your humidity problems. If you have a place outside that gets shade during most of the sunny hours, try putting some out for the summer. They will enjoy the rain, the bright indirect light, and the breeze. Best of luck!
I do let my orchids out during the summer, and the humidity goes up to 50% indoors anyways..however, would a drier winter affect the plants negatively? I have a few orchids that seem to grow fine (except a few accordion leaves here and there).
(sorry this is such a long response) Brassavolas would pull through the winter with 25% humidity. They can handle it better than most, actually.I really had to think before I could say how lower humidity affects all orchids. I think it probably results in plants that have less reserves and end up being lees "beefy". It ends up with production of fewer and smaller flowers. Also, less healthy plants are more prone to attacks from insects. I also noticed that when my plants are getting really good culture the plants start multiple leads far more often. For me, until my greenhouse is built the struggle to achieve good culture is almost constant. The best we can do in any situation is our attention to the plants. I am sure you will truly enjoy adding a Brassavola to your collection.
Wade Hollenbach I agree with Wade, some orchid do better in low humidity than others and Brassavolas are among them, they are very tough. Atrick to raise up the humidity a bit is to add a layer of sphagnum moss on top of the media, it will keep more moisture for the roots and also evaporate up towards the plant's leaves. I am sure the Brassavolas will be good even in low humidity but an ultrasonic humidifier will always help :) good luck!
My wishlist just grew an inch here. I've always been in love with the crosses between Brassavola and Cattleya and I have a 6 or 7 of them. But now I just have to have a Brassavola too. Nice video as always :D
We have been living far away from our country.....somewhere I found the heaven of orchids!😊! I also have had the luck to meet orchid experts from this country where we live now! That is why I have these orchids and other mini orchid species too! I love them all!
Hi Danny! Among all the orchids I have, they are my favorite! I have B nodosa and cucullata.....Of course, they are among the easiest orchids to take care of, very resistent to drought and they need less care than other orchids do!!! Adorable fragrance also! I love the Little Star B nodosa!!!
I grow Little Stars in the clay pot, bark in the two thirds in the bottom and sphagnum moss on the top area. It is growing like a weed. Superbug in a wooden basket it is also growing fast shooting multiple new leads. I think brassavola are very fast growing orchids.
Just bought a baby Blc. Prada Green Deluxe ‘NN’ - anything special I should know about care? First time trying with this type of orchid. Thanks! Love all your videos - I've learned so much from you. Prior to finding your videos any orchid I had died from not knowing how to care for them.
I recently bought a Brassavola nodosa, the Lady-of-the-Night Orchid, and its fragrance is really, really nice at nights. It's hanging in our balcony on a cork slab. They guy , who sold it to me, told me this BN was among cactuses...so as you were saying they don't need that frequent watering some other orchids may need. BTW, I love the shape of their leaves...and that Brassavola cucullata of yours looks amazing...on my list now:)
Thanks Miguel, I can't wait to have the Nodosa in bloom too :D however they are not among cacti, think the person just wanted to state that they don't need to be watered too often :P I heard the cucullata has a slightly different scent as well, so it would be great to have that one too :D
Dani, I have the brassia Jimnye Cricket and it grows lovely. Try that one if you are in the market for another one. It is also awarded. good luck. Easy to grow
thanks Dany ,my b nodossa just arrive i am so happy .i brought it with spike so i can wait to have them bloom to me . i was not sure how to water then so i come here to see if you have it .and as always i am not disappointing ..thank you
Hi!! I'm a new Orchid lover! Just got my first Orchids, a Brassavola Nodulosa and Miltonia Hajime Ono. I am so full of questions. I've had them for a week, the Miltonia was flowering when I received her and has 3 new blooms! What do new blooms look like on the Brassavola? I have many new leaves pushing up! Thank you!
Hi Dani! what kind of fertilizer do you recommend for orchids and how much do I have to use? I have simbidiums, catleyas, phaleonopsis, vanilla, and brassavola Aka's cricket nodosa.
What is the plant to the right? In the black and white container? I don’t know if I am under watering or overwatering my ‘Stargazer’ orchid after repotting because the roots were sooo intertwined and media was complicated and mostly sphagnum moss. I repotted with the repot me basic potting mix and added some sphagnum moss.
We have been blessed to live in a country where there are so many orchid nurseries...that I could not imagine! Anyway, maybe in our country too there will be more orchid species for sale. I understood (from different sources) that there started to appear more hybrids in the flower shops and supermarkets ...which is so great! Slowly slowly but very good!
Hi Viorel, well I hope so but I seriously doubt it :) I wouldn't consider the orchid lovers community here to be a strong one, partially due to the low number, partially due to their ego's lol so in the next 50 years I doubt we'll have anything like a nursery, people are not interested in anything other than pretty flowers and that's that ;) but yes, new hybrids appeared due to the stock market of the Netherlands, stores however have no clue what they are buying, if it's cheap they get it no matter what it is lolol
Well, I am quite optimistic regarding this problem. People,in general, buy orchids just for their flowers. It is available every where you go! Here, most people buy them for Xmas or Chinese New Year and then, after the flowers are gone, they throw away the plant. Of course the plants are very cheap! But the orchid lovers (hobbyists or collectors) they know their value...and they also really appreciate all kinds of species or hybrids. Regarding our country, well you know it! People cannot afford to buy other stuff what about orchids that are not so cheap? It will take some time so that people would start to appreciate them! Luckily there are some...like us that do know their value!!! :)
hello, I loved the video and came away with lots of new information. I wanted to know if you have any experience de-flasking b. nodosa. Would like to try de-flasking on a hearty plant. Thanks Dave.
Hi David, I didn't have the chance to deflask an orchid until now, but I can direct you to another video by Bill in which he deflasks asome Brassia, maybe it will give you some ideas :) ua-cam.com/video/sYwOkhkQygo/v-deo.html
My little star Brassavola is dying. Is it possible to save her? She is down to just one leaf and it has started to turn yellow. Please let me know if you have any advise.
Can I email you some pictures of my bassavola nodosa? I've had it for years, and I've never found anyone to give me advice. I bought lights 1½ years ago, and all my orchids took off, but this one. It grew new leaves and millions of white roots but no flower. Per your video, I need to get a different pot. This one only drains at the bottom.. please help me. 😊
Hi Danny, Hope you can help me, Bought a Brassavola Fuchs star on eBay,, 5 leaves , 3 have been clipped on top, but still brown and yellowing down the leaf, the end of the growing lead the 2 last leaves have rotted off, leaving two green leaves in the middle of the lead, no live roots, do you think this could be saved? any suggestions would be appreciated, Thank you
I want a culculata!!!I heard they have a great fragrance.but the leaves are kinda ugly.I brought a nodosa panama today.I wonder what's the difference with the normal nodosa
Hi Danny today i bought a brassavola ovaliformis the care is the same? And also it came with only 3 leaves should i keep it in a bag like a greenhouse or just let it alone and wait till grows?
Hi Marcelo, I don't own that variety but it should take the same care yes. Regarding the bag, is your orchid a seedling? or does it only have 3 mature leaves? if it's an adult I suggest you don't keep it in a bag, that method brings more problems than benefits really, lack of ventilation can promote rot in just a few days. Keep it hydrated and that's all you need to do :) good luck!
Hi. My orchid leafs has become red, Is that any problem with the orchid. I have put him a east facing windo were orchid get sunlight through windonet is that ok.
Great video. I noticed the hanger with clips that works with a plastic cup. Do you know what they are called and where to get them? I grow seedlings in plastic cups and are very interested.
+Daniel Perry I am not sure if they have a name, I think teku plant hangers, they make all the accessories I use :) www.gardencityplastics.com/TekuRange
Danny, I bought a brassavola digbyana Orchid are they similar care as the nodosa? I bought both types of brassavola. The digbyana was mounted and I potted in up and noticed mealy bugs. I just took it out of the pot and noticed all the roots that were alive died but no bug's. Luckily it's in its growth season and new roots are growing in. So, it should bounce back in time just no summary out doors. Should I use a plastic cup or just a regular plastic pot?
+Richard Lewis Hi, I never had this one although she is on my wishlist :D she should take the same care as other brassavolas yes. Be very careful with the potting media, they like a lot of air so make sure the medium is very ventilated and drains fast. If you are sure there are no pests, you can pot her in a normal orchid pot, you can also add more ventilation holes to the pot to help out with aeration :)
Thank you for the reply. Since my bug incounter and repotting the digbyana. It's starting to bounce back. I noticed that it is sending out root nubins. I water it vary careful with the new roots and future new growths that don't rot off.
Hi Danny! For my second haul whenever I have the money for it I want a brassavola among other things like a cycnodes. So my question would be, wich one do you like most? fragrance plays a big role for me , but I have also seen in the comments that they can be very very slow growing orchids, so I'd like something more on the middle ground, so if something bad happens I wont be like 2 years without flowers. Ill order from Schwerter because you keep talking wonders about them and I want to try several providers and see how they work for me :) Thanks!
Hi, I will have to go for the cucullata :) flowers are wonderful and it has the strongest smell of all orchids for me :P but.. it grows slow yes.. once a year you should have flowers though with good care :D if you set it back though (like I have mine) you're in for a lot of time without flowers so, careful with too much root stress if it's a tiny division.
Thanks for the quick answer! The thing is I like more the fireworks like shape of the cuculata, but the leaves don't do much for me. On the other hand I like a lot nodosa like leaves, and the fact it tells you when it has the amount of light it wants. Do you prefer little stars or the nodosa? But again I'm a sucker for scent..... When does the cuculata flowers? I'm thinking on brassavolas now cause I heard they can bloom in autumn winter
Ok, after a lot of research and lack of sleep, i think ill get the little stas. Id like the plant to flower easily and abundantly, and I also like a lot more the foliage of this one over the cuculata. Besides, like you showed Schwerter sometimes delivers really nice specimens so that's a plus. I think I will eventually get the cucullata but now I like more the idea of having a bit of everything and see how it grows for me etc. And last, I found the DREAM brassavola for both of us, but its from a private grower, I reaaaaaly hope the guy sells it to nurseries or something. It's a hybrid between B. nodosa and B. cucullata so you get the droopie flowers, the abundant foliage and also it seems that more flowers than a cucullata. It's just to die for! ablackorchid.com/slides/BYakiBB3.html Here you can see it, It even changes color when the flower its open, but I must say I truly love that purple on a brassavola.
Thanks a lot for this video and care tips. I just got my first brassavola amethyst, which is amazing :) and colorful as it is purple / white color. Check it out, you will love it :)
+Han Rong Soo Hi, well the little stars is a cross of nodosa, the nodosa is the species. They look very similar but the little stars seems bigger to me.
I live in Dubai... are there are hardly any Orchids to be found here. Only some basic ones. I'm not sure if I order online will they survive the journey. Any advice there?
Hi, well i am not sure, each region has its specific orchids and nurseries. Try to find nurseries in your area by searching on the internet. If not, maybe find online stores that deliver in your area. Transport can greatly depend, the important thing is the temperature, so if it's very hot or very cold, they might suffer a bit. But you never know until you try :) good luck!
And another question about the care. I watched your video about it, but mine is not potted but mounted. The only bare roots orchid i have is a vanda, do i water the Nodosa a bit every day like the vanda or how often should it be? She is in my bathroom, full south exposure, temp gets high and is humid with a lot of sun, she has red freckles as u mentioned.
+Iva Viseux yep you should water it every day if the roots dryout everyday. It's just like any other mounted orchid :) It can be quite hassling though, that is why I decided to unmount all my orchids and pot them, they were suffering from neglect from my art :(
+john mickel yes I did notice it is very slow, not sure that I can say it is fragile in comparison with some other orchids I had, mine is quite resilient to my bad treatments :P but yes very very slow to grow.
Dani, My Brassavola David Sanders started to drop her leaves, after blooming for me. When I removed her from her pot, I noticed that her roots were all dried out. How can I save her???
+Jan Lim Hi Jan, a picture would help me understand better what is going on, as there might be multiple reasons for its decline. If you want just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)
+Jan Lim ok thanks for the picture.. hmm I think there was a major problem with the roots since they look pretty dead to me now. Either they desiccated or they suffocated.. guessing desiccation though since I see you kept it in charcoal? ok just remove everything that is dead (papery roots without substance). You could opt for mounting the orchid or potting it and keeping the surface a bit more damp until new roots are produced. Brassavolas do like to dryout, but not kept dry for too long so it should be watered whenever the media is dry. The point is to not keep the media soggy, but they need to be hydrated too so make sure you don't miss watering day when it needs to be done. I hope this helps, I think it is just a root problem, no disease or anything contagious :)
Now I want a brassavola nodova now and my local vendor sells it, but I must resist! I'm running out of space and saving space and money for vanda and neofinetia. Must resist!
it has pointy pencil like fingers lets say and it grows straight up in the air. i have been on about 25 different sites and i havent found it yet... please help me miss orchid girl
So excited for it to bloom!! and to smell it :)
They also gave us a free yellow or a free red cattleya for everyone involved.
woaaaaw look who's the new species grower in town :D you'll love it I'm sure, just treat it like a Catt :P saw the vid on the new orchids too, will make a comment soon about the kingianum ;)

The Moths will dissappear in light.
I could be wrong, but that's my experience.
Anyway. It's a fantastic Orchid.
Lots of love from Bo.
You are amazing.
new family here. just got my first Yellow Bird
I LOVE Brassavolas! If your growing area has high humidity they do very well mounted but pots and small baskets like you use work well too.Thank you for the wonderful video.
Are the particularly picky about humidity? During the winter, my humidity goes down to around 25% and I'm a bit worried to get o e
Hi Dante. 25% is difficult for any orchid. An ultrasonic humidifier can make a huge difference in your growing environment. I would definitely not try mounting plants with your humidity problems. Beautiful flower.
I can't believe that only one little flower can produce such a strong smell that it can actually give you a headache.
That's great!
Thank you, yes one little flower is enough hehe, imagine a whole basket of them :))

It's just to die for!
ablackorchid.com/slides/BYakiBB3.html Here you can see it, It even changes color when the flower its open, but I must say I truly love that purple on a brassavola.
ow my I have been hunting for this for a while too, great choice go for it!
hey there i have a orchid...? was wondering if maybe u can help me identify it
I was hoping you'd make this video!
:D
Hi Danny 😊 do you know if brassavola david sander is fragrant? It's a cross between brassavola cucculata and brassavola digbyana. Thanks
Thanushan Nagendran yes all brassavola crosses (not the intergeneric ones) are fragrant :)
Ok, thank you! 😁
Thanks a lot for this video and care tips. I just got my first brassavola amethyst, which is amazing :) and colorful as it is purple / white color. Check it out, you will love it :)
Danny ,what diffrence between Brassavola Nodosa and Brassavola Little Stars? Because my orchid lebel is lost.
+Han Rong Soo Hi, well the little stars is a cross of nodosa, the nodosa is the species. They look very similar but the little stars seems bigger to me.
Mine do fine outside into the high 30s F
I live in Dubai... are there are hardly any Orchids to be found here. Only some basic ones. I'm not sure if I order online will they survive the journey. Any advice there?
Hi, well i am not sure, each region has its specific orchids and nurseries. Try to find nurseries in your area by searching on the internet. If not, maybe find online stores that deliver in your area. Transport can greatly depend, the important thing is the temperature, so if it's very hot or very cold, they might suffer a bit. But you never know until you try :) good luck!
Hi,
I got myself Brassavola Nodosa, if i understand right it is not Brassavola Little stars but one of its parents?
+Iva Viseux Hi Iva, yes that is correct :)
It's just like any other mounted orchid :) It can be quite hassling though, that is why I decided to unmount all my orchids and pot them, they were suffering from neglect from my art :(
but very slow growing esp. cucu. very fragile if mounted
+john mickel yes I did notice it is very slow, not sure that I can say it is fragile in comparison with some other orchids I had, mine is quite resilient to my bad treatments :P but yes very very slow to grow.
Can you post the name of the blooming brassavola shown?
Dani, My Brassavola David Sanders started to drop her leaves, after blooming for me. When I removed her from her pot, I noticed that her roots were all dried out. How can I save her???
+Jan Lim Hi Jan, a picture would help me understand better what is going on, as there might be multiple reasons for its decline. If you want just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)

Dani, The photos can be viewed here.

Dani, Thank you so much! :D

Now I want a brassavola nodova now and my local vendor sells it, but I must resist! I'm running out of space and saving space and money for vanda and neofinetia. Must resist!
