    Haha, you crack me up Maria! 'Uhh uhh, she don't be changing her clothes!' That is hilarious!! Great video on the Brassavola types. I happen to be a fan, but sometimes they are not the easiest to grow in my indoor conditions in NJ. We get lots of warth and humidity 7 months a year, but winter can be a bit of a challenge. I have found that keeping them drier seems to work a bit or just a light misting. Thanks for sharing!

    Time and time again, I find myself returning to this video, it is such a wealth of information and attention to details. I've been frantically looking for photos or footage on how the sheaths look on a Brassavola, and this is the only video I found detailing this aspect. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos, Maria, I'm a long time subscriber, and I always enjoy your hard work.

    I just purchased a Brassavola hybrid from the annual Orchid Show at Michigan State University. It's a hybrid of a hybrid - Little Stars x perrineii (I hope I spelled that correctly; I don't have the tag in front of me). So I was just poking around YT for information and care instructions. I mounted my Brassavola onto some driftwood using sphagnum moss and sinew thread and placed it beside my window. I hope all goes well. I am a newbie with orchids. I have one other orchid - a "Twinkle" Oncidium - (bought at the same Orchid Show 3 years ago) that has successfully flowered twice. Yay! Anywho, any tips on the Brassavola would be appreciated. This video was a lot of fun, but was more descriptive rather than care-oriented. Thanks! P.s. Your hair is gorgeous.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 років тому

      Thank you so much and I am glad that you enjoyed the video and congratulations on your first Brassavola hybrid! I do hope you enjoy it and I hope that it blooms soon for you! These are pretty hardy growers and can multiply rather quickly. It can withstand neglect and are pretty resilient. If you are keeping yours mounted I do suggest that you water it more often as it can dry out rather quickly. Your mount should do well with this type as it does love to spread out and crawl everywhere. I do love the way they look mounted! Wishing you the best of luck with yours and I am hoping that your new found hobby will give you an never ending amount of joy! HAPPY GROWING.
      P.S. The best advice that I could give to any new grower is to be sure you do research on each type of orchid you are getting so that you understand the nature and the care that is needed. I have lost so many orchids because I made decisions based on my heart and not based upon what types of orchids are logical for me to get because of the type of environment that I am able to provide. There are just some orchids that will not do well in my environment and under my care...so it is best that you know ahead of time. It will save you a whole lot of frustration and money.

      WOW! That is quite a brassavola collection! I have gotten very close to them in such a very short time and they are climbing on my list of favorite orchids! The one that I am looking for is brassavola cucullata x c. purpurata. They are just so exquisite! ...but the only ones that I have been able to find are small seedlings with about 2 baby leaves for $50. I'm too afraid to commit to that investment knowing that it will not survive so young in my care...so my hunt is on for a mature sized one. I am too am hoping that they bloom for you this year. Please share some pictures of them...I would so love to see them! HAPPY GROWING! :)

    Hi Maria. I love this video. You are so funny! I have one that looks similar to this but it seems I wasn't providing enough moisture. The leaves are drying and falling off and the pseudobulbs are quite wrinkled. I've repotted in sphagnum moss with packing peanuts at the bottom. Do you think it can survive? I live in Jamaica where it's also hot and sunny.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  6 років тому

      Thank you so much for joining me on my orchid adventures! The brassavola hybrids are really tolerant to dry conditions so I am surprised that they are doing poorly for you. The only time they usually exhibit these types of signs is if you haven't watered them in a couple of weeks to a month. You may want to look closer to ensure that they don't have any other type of issues such as infections or insect infestations. I would definitely disinfect the orchid and take a closer look at it. And yes they should be fine in sphagnum moss to get the roots going...but these orchids do better without too much moisture and having time to dry out so you may want to change it to another form of media that would retain less water in the future, unless you find that it does extremely well in the moss, then I wouldn't change it over. Watch for signs and it will show you if it happy. I am wishing you the best of luck with your orchids and also your orchid adventures! HAPPY GROWING! :)

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  6 років тому

      Yea...they are phenomenal orchids and I search high and low for them. Many that I find aren't usually sold at these sizes and have been grown for 20+ years...so they are a bit pricey even for me to purchase....and usually it takes literally a whole day drive to the locations and to hand pick them so it does take a lot of time and energy. I think even more work then I anticipated...but I love what I do now and I am able provide orchids to many that don't have them readily available in there area so there is great satisfaction in that. :) Thanks so much for your well wishing, I do appreciate it! :)

    All those Brassavola hybrids are making me feel so jealous. My two nodosas and two of its hybrids are either still young or they simply hate me. i am still waiting for at least one flower to open from ANY of them. Ugh~! : )

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  6 років тому +1

      I feel your pain...that's I have vowed that I will no longer be buying young plants...I am just way to impatient. Once they are more established and mature they should start growing like crazy for you. What I've found with the nadosas are that they would much rather be on the dryer side then on the wet side. They actually seem to appreciate a little neglect...LOL! I do hope that they bloom for you soon as well. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  6 років тому

      ...I didn't give any specifics...but depending on your environment...usually these like to be watered at about once or twice a week, but can also tolerate occasional drought and likes to be more on the dry side then the wet side. It should be allowed to dry out a little before watering again. This thrives well in cattleya type lighting.
