The Swatch X Blancpain Scuba Fifty Fathoms Is Real - And It Has Arrived

- We knew that anything was possible when it came to a second collab from Swatch in Bioceramic. Most of us thought, given the anniversary year, that it would be the Omega Seamaster. But Blancpain is also celebrating this year. It's the 70th birthday of the massively important Fifty Fathoms dive watch. While we never really thought a Blancpain Swatch would come to pass… they actually did it.

I’d wear this for a couple days then ask myself why I spent $400 on some cheap plastic kids looking happy meal watch
Thats spot on - I bought the seiko 5 snoopy this year and had a similar reaction- and that’s a real and very decent watch.
Price will be the biggest hang up for most of us when it comes to this release. Which is kind of funny when you consider many of us will drop thousands on a watch… I suppose that just means many of us may feel the quality just isn’t there to justify the $400 price point. I blame “bioceramic” as a material choice.
100% this!
That’s a cool watch!
I tried the Snoopy diver, and liked it a lot, but I found it just a little bit too small; especially on that NATO strap it sat really high on the wrist.
I’m not queuing in line for this one. But will take look a few weeks later to see what they’re like in real life. $400 seems a bit much for a plastic watch. (My sons flikflak diver style was $50) 😉
It would take you a couple of days?
I bought it for the fun of it! As a watch collector I am exstatic that Swatch owning Blancpain, Omega and many other top Swiss brands can bring this to those that want a great brand watch that is affordable. Thanks Swatch! Loving my Fifty Fathoms Atlantic Ocean Blancpain. 💙👍🏻🙏🏻
We need Seiko x Casio
😂
Hahaha, he’ll yeah we do!!!
And AP x Casio Royal Oak
😂 too many seiko models
No no, Grand Seiko x Casio
$400 For a plastic case, plastic movement and plastic crystal? It should at least have a mineral crystal, that way it doesn't scratch when the sunlight strikes it.
Isn't it sapphire crystal?
400$ for Blancpain....if it's Rolex it's 1200 Usd....it's about marketing not plastic...
@@EogenerativeRolex isn't going to do this type of thing.
@@ZeroSOFInfinityThey called it bio sourced scratch resistant material. (@2:41) Considering they are calling plastic bioceramic, it's most likely another plastic. Otherwise it would just be Sapphire.
Rumors say it is sapphire
AP x Casio. The Casioak

There already is Casio EFR-S108. F for Failure but not quite.
I see an Asian buying luxury watch video incoming.
If Casio starts going the same path as Swatch and collaborates with other watch brands, I am really hoping for a Casio x Seiko
Let’s not miss the chance of calling it 51 Fathoms please.
49 fathoms, when everyone will find out it’s as lacklustre as the moonswatch was
50 Swatchoms
That what I thought
Swain, or S-pain
@@Dehumanis3ddI do not believe you get the joke. Joke being the movement is called swatch sistem51.
Hello Hodinkee and thanks for this vid. But, what a laudatory vid!
With such videos, there is no need for Swatch to advertise, you perfectly do the job for the brand!
We have to call it the Thrifty Fathoms!
It's the ugliest

Hahahahahah
It's thrifty until the scalpers get their hands on it.

You had me right up to $400. Cool story bro.

Not nearly as cool on paper as the moonswatch, and now that we know what to expect regarding materials and build quality, it's a pass for me. Invest in a g shock and a Kamasu instead
@@alucardx86 Eww Japanese watches, no thanks. I'll stick to Swiss-made Blancpain and Omega instead for the same price
I have a Blancpain for three years now. Nobody told me : oh you have a Blancpain and this is what I like from it. My GF told me : this watch is exactly like you, ordinary on the outside, we have to look inside to appreciate it. Now everyone will tell me: ohhh you bought a Swatch 😢
😂😂😂
I’m glad to hear this has a mechanical movement and legit water resistance. They look better than I expected.

😂 yo
economy of scale, who cares?@@cc468
After looking up the Sistem51 movement, it’s actually much worse that just making it quartz. The movement stops working after 2-3 years and is basically impossible to service, because it’s designed to be assembled by machine and is sealed.
Same thoughts, but boy this guy will be thick on the wrist.
So will there be lines at the Swatch store for this? A lot of people don't know Blancpain like they know Omega. I'm curious what will happen this Saturday.
I guess that's the point. Bp is a very niche market Brand. The ff is virtually unknown outside of watch enthusiasts' circles. Even among watch enthusiasts they always Talk about it but never pull the trigger.
Bp needs outside market audience to revive The brand... after all, it is still a business that has bills to be paid.
Like you am curious as to how well it will be received by the broader market
I tried (unsuccessfully) to buy the moonswatch a few times so I'm the target market I guess, but this one is nowhere near as exciting. The Speedmaster is a well known iconic watch and the swatch version looked very cool. The Fifty Fathoms is not very well known and this watch just looks way too chunky and, frankly, is boring. Also, the amount of horror stories I heard about the moonswatch build quality would make me think twice about buying this, even if I thought it was cool. And at $400 it is way overpriced. And bio-ceramic is just plastic.
I’ll be at the Vegas Swatch store. I’ll report back Saturday. Haha
There will be lines
🤣@@richsun247
If AP or Patek collaborated with Casio, the watch would be unstoppable
Casio dont have to callabarate with those😂,,,
Casio already has the Casioak, which is already a top seller.
They don't need to pollute their brand by mixing with another watch brand, unlike Swatch.
Blancpain x Seiko SNZH range is my go to Fifty-Five Fathoms. Contains actual steel and you get five extra fathoms for free.
Guys. Call it the Fifty-One Fathoms, please. Come on. It’s the biggest layup ever.
Yes. Fifty-Five Fathoms is Seiko MOD.
“Noody-brank” is the common pronunciation and, I would add, the most interesting part of these watches. I always wanted to see a nudibranch on the back of a watch but never thought I would. Bravo 👏
You always wanted to see a nudibranch on the back of a watch?
Making a Blancpain in cheap plastic is far more of a climb down than making one with a quartz movement.
Don't buy it then, go for a walk.
You are given more choice as a consumer don't cry
Its ceramics
Blancpain trying hard to be relevant again.
But i buy it because it looks fun
Given the 400 USD retail price, one could argue that it's quite expensive plastic,
Whew! I thought I was gonna be missing out until you said $400 😂😂😂😂😂
400 USD for a (much cheaper looking) plastic watch using an unservicable movement?!? Insane.
And you still won't be able to buy one.
By "unserviceable," I assume you mean Swatch just replaces it when it stops ticking?
@@ams914 No the watch is hermetically sealed. The only way to get the movement out of a Sistem51 watch is to destroy it. Also the movement only has one rotor screw. The rest of the movement is bonded together with some form of solder. To top it off the pallet fork and escapement wheel are both plastic.
Yes I think people are much better off buying any Seiko5 or Orient at this stage 😅
@@DCTag are we pretending like $400 is a lot broke boy?
Swatch :it’s a “mix of ceramic and bio sourced plastic derived from castor oil”
-That sounds like plastic with extra steps
Something else plasticky to dump in the oceans 😢 right down to the movement.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I made something out of crushed sand and PLA milk bottles, would it not qualify as "bio-ceramic". PLA is notionally bio-degradable, sand is ceramic in the loosest sense of the word. Does anybody have the slightest clue what is actually in Swatch's "bioceramic"? Is there a patent we could examine, or is this just yet more marketing bo**ox from the absolute masters of marketing bo**ox.
OK In the true spirit of bing "that guy", I'm going to answer my own question.
"Swatch's new and patented Bioceramic material is a composite mixture of the castor-derived bioplastic and zirconium dioxide ceramic."
So first ... caster oil derived plastic.
"Although hidden in its seed is the poisonous ricin, castor beans can be made worthy by converting them into polyamide 11, a thermoplastic from the nylon family of polymers. The oily seeds of the castor plant are pressed and the extracted oil is then treated by adding some chemicals to remove oxygen after which it undergoes polymerization where the water in it is removed and heat and gaseous nitrogen are introduced to get the final product - Nylon."
Next... zirconium dioxide. Crushed up rock...or if you prefer.. from Wikipedia.
"Its most naturally occurring form, with a monoclinic crystalline structure, is the mineral baddeleyite. A dopant stabilized cubic structured zirconia, cubic zirconia, is synthesized in various colours for use as a gemstone and a diamond simulant."
So .. not quite old milk bottles and sand, but closer to old stockings and sand.
Well you heard it here first.
Three things: 1. Not sure if this is due to post-prod on the video but the “blue” colourway looks more like a purple to me. 2. This is an adult version of my son’s flik flak. 3. Should we expect a $1k plasti…er…bioceramic Breguet next year? 🙄
People bought $25k plastic AP Royal Oaks, so why not?
I guess different color is because they changed something after the "Moonswatch leaving color on the skin" problem
Cool! Guilloche bioceramic with a meca-quartz. Hopefully in pink
We can be glad Patek isn‘t in the Swatch Group.

I have to say, I'm impressed. The Moon Swatch to me is a little toy like, but this thing, with all the features, drilled lugs, 300ft water resistance, see through caseback, nice clicky bezel.... is compelling. Perfect travel watch... cheap, replaceable and useful.
I’m with you on that, people are taking these watches far too seriously. It’s a bit of fun that you can put on and not worry about.

I just picked up the all black one on a whim today while walking past the Swatch store. First thing I noticed is how much better this feels as a watch than the Moonswatch. It has just the right amount of heft to make it feel more substantial. 400 bucks I was like who cares let's enjoy it and see how long it lasts, and after putting it on I absolutely love it.
Ocean of Storms is fantastic. Put it on a more premium rubber strap with yellow stitching, wow, never thought I would enjoy it so much. Made me seriously consider buying a real 42mm Blancpain later

They did not make a luxury watch accessible, they prododuced a 400€ disposable plastic watch with the look of a luxury watch.
That's the point. You wanna target a demographic that can afford to buy a 400usd disposable watch and graduate to BP.
The one-time-use thing "culture" at its finest. A good point of reference for those laughing at Pagani/Benyar mechs.
Any word on accuracy? Because if it's sealed, it better be accurate for such price.
Love the colors and the mechanical movement. Will they be as difficult to purchase as the MoonSwatch?
Yes, I live in Atlanta a major city I have no Boutique and I have no intention of traveling to one then standing in line with thugs and aholes.
I live in Chicago - no boutique here either. I visit NYC regularly, and by chance walked into the Madison Ave. Swatch store last month and picked up a MoonSwatch “Mission to Earth”. Might get the “Indian Ocean” next year, who knows 😂
Even if not everybody will be able to get their hand on the first production batch you should be able to get one at retail price in a couple of month
Just bought one in Lisbon. Love it.
I would have if I had spare play money, because I love the Blancpain brand ! (Though I prefer the old fashioned quantieme range over their signature diver FF)
It would wear gigantic on me but I’d feel so comfortable wearing it in public knowing no-ones going to steal my plastic throwaway. 😆
I know it’s not built to last but I like the movement they’ve used, love the backing design and use of the lume hands, it’s a fun casual wear
I’d like to think it lasts longer than we’re all giving it credit for 😏
Antarctica is the only colour combination I like…
Except it's not a fecking Blancpain, it's a chewing gum dispenser throwaway plastic toy watch.
Don't waste your money.
Would totally get this if the movement was different. "The strap is made from blah blah blah, we are so responsible" oh and "the movement is not serviceable, so it ends up in a landfill in a few years when the movement has issues"
Somewhere around $200 I’d be interested
Just got mine from SF and I got the Antarctic. Found it interesting that they all have the same movement but only the normal dials have a date. The white and orange one has no date.
400$ for basically a plastic Sistem 51 Swatch? I can get a much nicer Tissot or Hamilton for that price when I shop around.
So still giving money to the swatch group either way with your comment

It’s using a nostalgic classic design, while selling you a cheap toy for $400. And „watch enthusiasts“ dig this sorta game…
This is to increase brand awareness for bp. The bp ff even if it has a cult following among enthusiasts cannot survive with such meager purchasing power.
How many are actually sold???
They need a wider reach... reaching out to the non enthusiasta crowds who have much more purchasing power , otherwise who's gonna pay the bills at bp?
Enthusiasts love to whine and praise but buying too little.
A business simply cannot survive and cater to their whims without actually purchasing much.
Hope this translates to future BP clients.
An assumption would be that there aren't millions on the second hand market, so they don't sell many as seen with say Rlx, but the fact is being niche and loved by enthusiasts they are likely not often sold on and as BP aren't messing with the design and producing multitudes of variants the reason to "upgrade" isn't there either. As for who pays the bill's, FF is the entry point to BP, take a look at the website for their elite custom work where prices skyrocket.
@@onawaitlist5038 not enough to pay the elves making the watches.
Bp market share both in value volume is less than 0.3% maybe of the global market... simply not feasible unless it's a labor of love still owned by the original owner who btw was out of business until JC Biver bought the name for around 30k usd. You can check out JC Biver himself telling this story.
Bp was dead in the water already. When JC BIVER Left swatch grp he and a partner went on to buy the BP name.
Point is even if BP sells watches at 100-200k usd a piece it would still not survive because it would take that watchmaker almost a year to make it .
What about your other overhead costs? No profits? What about reinvestments for machineries, R&D, ads, etc etc.?

$400 is a miss for me (it's all subjective) as you're into "real" watch territory with Citizen, Seiko etc. - even approaching some Hamilton field watches etc. At $200, sure - a fun watch for a collection.
