Yamaha Portasound PSS-380 keyboard (1989)
Yamaha Portasound PSS-580 MusicStation keyboard (1989)
The PSS-380 is a late-80s Portasound with a more sophisticated set of voices than its predecessors. Synth settings are editable via the sliders on the top right of the control panel. You can also layer a second voice, which cuts the number of notes of polyphony in half. Some of the sounds are effectively 4 operator FM (2x layered 2-operator sounds), making for a thicker sound than most other FM Portasounds.
The PSS-580 is a relative of the 480, 680, and 780, with the same voices and most of the same features in common. The 680/780 boast a couple more features, but the editable FM synthesizer parameters are common to all these keyboards, with control from the front panel of the keyboard over attack, decay, frequency, feedback and modulation for 2 operators.
The custom patches for the 380 can be recreated using the slider settings below:
Stutter chords: 92 4 5 4 7 8 2 8 / 3 5 4 7 8 2 8
Dramatic bass sweep: 72 1 7 1 1 1 8 8
Main bass: 46 1 8 3 1 5 4 8 / 1 1 3 1 5 4 8
Lead: 94 5 8 8 1 1 8 8 + 94 (layer)
All synth sounds from the 580 were custom patches made using Martin Tarenskeen's excellent PSS panels for Ctrlr. ctrlr.martintar...
You can download a selection of original patches for the 480, 580, 680 and 780 free from my website: www.alfonsemus...
Thanks to Chris (Wee Muse) for lending me the 380.

Magical sounds. You give these OPL chips the respect they deserve.
Small synth, big sound ! Nice composition, as always.
Excellent music, Alfonse. Very inspiring! I love those keyboards from the 80s! I'm having fun with them as well. I'm going to have to find a nice PSS keyboard. I got the PSR-16 among others. Fun!
Thanks, I haven't tried the PSR-16, but it's on the list...
Wow! Yes... Just WOW! 😄
Best keyboardist .!
wow what a lead sound
Excellent performance, and yes, when such small vintage music keyboards have affects added, it totally enhances the sound quality. You certainly done those two keyboards justice. I record multi track demos as if your hobby as you will see on my channel here on UA-cam. I’d love to know how you get those video effects and how you are able to record yourself playing simultaneously with all the different video clips.
Thank you for the patches, Alfonse. I'm excited to try them. Have a very happy new year!
Cool, glad the patch info is useful. Happy new year to you too.
Sound like a space triller movie soundtrack fantastic job alfonse! 💯💯💯

Thanks. :)

Great job sounds really good.
Absolutely beautiful!!! so cyborg
Sounds great!! Need to find a second hand one now. :)
Brilliant. I've got a pss380. Sounds incredible through a Zoom MS70CDR and Digitech Polara. On the lookout for a 580,680 or 780 now for the midi. Midi on the 380 would be awesome if it was possible.
Nice. Yep, they missed a trick there. Good luck with the search
Yamaha should re-release the PSS-380, the PSS-290,the PSS-680 & the PSS-580!
I'm with you on that campaign.
Noooo, then they wouldn't be £20/£40 SH, I love my 2 (PSS590/570. ; )
I feel strangely sad for the little robot.
Forever destined to walk slowly on beneath the stars...
If it helps, I can confirm the robot lives a life of ease and leisure now.
@@alfonsemusic LOL, goood to hear.
Is it a Tomy wind-up?
@@RodBeauvex it is, it's been following me around since the 80s.
