  • Part 2 K1200RS (2003') Integral Servo Assisted ABS Unit, EVO Brakes, ABS III, Brake bleeding procedure. Step by step continuation of bleeding your FRONT & REAR "CONTROL" Circuits. My first video was bleeding WHEEL Circuits. The CONTROL Circuit bleeding is done every two years. This is the service everyone shy's away from and pays big money to have the dealer do it! Go to the I-BMW forum, do your research, print up Gary Holingers written instructions, which I used as a reference. Here is a link to the write up www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t... also reference this web site pdf (great pics and step by step text) if you have the older style ABS unit which has the wheel circuit reservoirs on top. advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/...
    Most people do NOT install speed bleeders on there ABS unit for bleeding the 6 bleed ports. You will need at least one SB1010S which is used for bleeding the Front filler adapter and is also used to bleed your clutch. The pointy tip will need to be ground off slightly to prevent the ball check valve from unseating before you get a few turns installing the bleeder in place of the grub screw that covers the hole. sorry for the long length of the videos, i just didn't want to leave out any details for anyone doing it for the first time! I saw the need to make the video to help my fellow K bike owners. After you watch the video i hope you give it a go on your bike and save yourself some money. I did the whole bleeding procedure by myself, wheel caliper circuits and the control circuits. The ABS bleeding uses reserve brakes to pump the fluid due to battery removal for access to a couple bleeders. So old fashioned bleeding. Make sure to get the funnel from www.beemerboneyard.com
    DISCLAIMER!!! This is how i bleed my bike! Do yours at your OWN risk! I am not responsible for you or any damage to your bike! This is for reference only. Follow your Service manual instructions!

    I recently purchased a 2001 K1200RS. It had been stored for many years and only had around 5000 miles on it. I was out riding it when one of the brake hoses sprang a leak. I got a set of SS brake lines for it and used your procedure to bleed the brakes and ABS after replacing the lines. Instead of making the fancy wrench on the F2 and R2 bleeders, I just stuck a paper towel under the screw and used a 7mm socket on a screwdriver handle, and bled them that way, and for the rest, a 7mm ignition wrench with a tube. The pads are virtually new, so I didn't pull them. Everything works great now. Thanks for posting these videos, as I almost went to the dealer since I couldn't find any information on the i-ABS unit. The forum that you referenced is no longer available, but you have enough info in the two videos to do this procedure.
    Thanks for these videos!
    PS, also replaced the plastic fuel tank quick disconnects with metal ones from beemer boneyard, I saw them when I ordered the reservoir funnel, and figured why not. The only other problem I had with the bike was the low fuel light always stayed on. I finally found a procedure to reset it, and now it works fine. (Short pins 3 and 4 on the diag connector when you have 4L of fuel in the tank. Turn on the ignition, light will flash and go out.)

    With your step by step instructions I was able to flush and bleed my 2004 K1200GT (12k miles) brakes and clutch, saved a ton of money (dealer quoted me $500) and learned so much about my bike. Dark colored fluid and black stuff came out just like what you demonstrated. Thank you!

    Absolute legend. Done this process myself on my 2004 K1200GT made the wrench just as you described worked a treat with some extra grinding around the 7mm end.
    Crazy just how wobbly R3 and F3 bleeders where I was frightened all the time one was going to snap off. Doing this myself including the wheel circuits will save me approx £200 every two years compared to the stealers.
    Thanks for the video.

      is the speed bleeder you used on the front filler adapter the same as the one on the rear brake? I went to SpeedBleeder.com and the ABS ones are smaller - local shop loaned me a standard on that they use - said it was the same part number as the rear brake. @@kontor15

    The bent box end 7mm wrench was a great tip for the R2 bleeder. The ABS/Servo video was also a great help. Though I have a 2002 K1200LT it made the job much easier. Keep up the good work. Thanks

    I noticed in the beginning of your video written instructions from a website called "ascycles" however I was unable to find that same article. The picture you had on the screen shows exactly the same ABS modular as the one I believe I have in my 2008 R1200gs. if there are any videos or a library available for the ABS bleeding on my bike I would be highly appreciative. Thank you so much for the great video and excellent instructions... if I end up doing the bleeding I will definitely try to share as well...

    David. Yea it is the same as either the front or back size. Can’t remember which one off the top of my head. The front filler adapter has a small ball valve that is spring loaded closed. I was getting a bit of leakage past the threads cause it was a bit long and as I was threading it in and it starts to open the ball valve with just a couple threads engaged. There is a shorter one I remember that would engage a few more threads and delay pushing the ball open while you are tightening it. You could probably gravity bleed it cause it is lower than the reservoir. Just messy. Maybe order a couple extra different sizes.

  • @jessemidgett1648

    You can also use a regular brake bleeder screw to backfill the front reservoir at the factory fill port on the ABS module using a big syringe, a bit of tubing, and pushing fluid up to the reservoir. Pushing bubbles up a line is easier than pushing them down, that's why the factory fills the reservoir that way. Make sure you block off the reservoir so fluid doesn't squirt out and drain enough fluid from the reservoir so it doesn't overflow. Afterwards, bleed it the normal way at the module in case any air got in around the threads of the speed bleeder in the ABS module fill port.

    Is it necessary to flush the factory fill port? My grub screw hex recess is a bit stripped so I've been leaving that port alone over the years of flushing my brakes,

    This is fucking nuts. If BMW designs some ludicrously complicated system, they should consider making maintenance items like this quickly accessible by the traditional methods.

      Old thread, but I could not agree more. The BMW Servo brake ABS system is widely regarded as the stupidest, most unnecessary, over-the-top complex idea ever put on a motorcycle. 😳

    Thanks for the great video, I'm getting ready to have a friend make the tools to start bleeding the abs unit. Quick question, do you have size/model number for the Speed Bleeder required for the front filler adapter?

    • @kontor15
      @kontor15  9 років тому +1

      Shawn,
      Go to the Web site www.speedbleeders.com on the left side of the page select motorcycle and it has a chart for the different year K1200rs gives you all the part numbers needed for doing the bleeding. Most people don't put them on the servo unit. I did the whole bleeding procedure by myself without speed bleeders. Added a few on the wheel calipers afterwards. Also if you later decide to put new brake lines on your bike. You would need to remove the speed bleeders and go back to regular bleeders st least to be able to bleed the new brake lines. This is due to the check valve in the speed bleeder not being able to open with air in the lines. FYI

    Best how to videos I have used and I followed them closely the whole way! I changed all my '02 K1200RS's lines to Speigler because the OEM's were disintegrating inside and causing the brakes to not release. I have bled the wheel circuits. I just bled the front filler adapter to the front reservoir. Should the brake lever be firm yet, or do you think I have to finish bleeding the whole ABS system before I will get a firm brake lever? Wondering if the wheel circuits and front filler adapter lines are bled right. What manual did you use, or did you piece this process together from forums?

    • @jessemidgett1648
      @jessemidgett1648 6 років тому

      To answer my own question: The system didn't get pressure in it until I bled the ABS module.

      Is my bleeding video for front and rear Wheel circuits. And you use the servo assisted pump to bleed the brakes at the calipers. If you don't have the servo assisted pump then you need to press an d pump brake lever or foot pedal, then open the bleeder to bleed fluid. And close the bleed screw before you release the brake lever. If you have speed bleeders installed it's easier to do cause you just leave bleed screw open, and just pump lever till your done. Then you close speed bleeder. Hope this helps! Have a safe Olympics!

  • @jessemidgett1648
    @jessemidgett1648 6 років тому

    If you grind down a speed bleeder and intend to reuse it, make sure you do not grind any more than the tip off or that conical tip won't seal in the caliper.

    I have a 99 k1200rs. Your videos have helped me more than I can put Into words.
    I saw your ram mount on the forks in one video, is there anyway I can see how you did that.
    Thank you,
    -Jeremiah

    • @kontor15
      @kontor15  6 років тому

      Jeremiah Golla i just drilled and tapped the fork tree piece to add the ram mount since the K1200RS has limited places to put them. I just felt underneath and made sure I at least drilled into the thicker part of the fork tree for at least one screw. The other went thru a thinner piece as its hollowed out in places underneath to save weight. That why my mount is installed on an angle so its not drilled thru a thinner piece where its been milled underneath. The other option I have seen is for a mount on top of the brake or clutch reservoirs. You get longer screws for the reservoir lid, that a plate with a ram ball mount screws into. For gopro video you want the shortest extension as it will vibrate with every bump. If you want a close up picture email me at peter.kontorinis@gmail.com

  • @dinot71
    @dinot71 5 років тому

    I hope you don't mind but I have two questions. One will this procedure work on my 1998 BMW k 1200 RS and the second question is would you do this procedure first and then bleed the calipers or do the calipers first and then bleed the circuits as shown in your video?

    • @kontor15
      @kontor15  5 років тому

      If the 98 has the. Servo assures brakes it should work the same. The servo itself might look different though. And the reservoirs might be on the unit itself. But as long as you do hear the servo motor running when you press the brakes with the bike powered you have the servo assisted brakes. As for the sequence. It shouldn’t matter which on you do first. On my bike the front has two separate reservoirs for the front and the rear shares another reservoir for both bleeding the caliper and the ABS circuits. I made two separate videos on bleeding both. Bleeding the calipers is a yearly thing and the Servo ABS unit every two years if I remember-correctly. .

    • @dinot71
      @dinot71 Рік тому

      I found out that my 1998 K1200 RS has a different braking system that's much easier to bleed. My ABS module only has two bleeder screws.

    Rarely can we fault the German bikes for their quality - if there are niggles, most of the time it's electronic, or wearing paint - at least since they've had to become more eco-friendly... That said, I cannot fathom why BMW's designers would make some aspects of their bikes so hard to work on! We could conclude that it adds to hourly tallies for dealerships' service departments - but if thing were more accessible/simpler, they'd get through more bikes.... Still... It's a disease that's affecting all the manufacturers these days! Not so good for the home mechanic!

    • @kontor15
      @kontor15  7 років тому +1

      I agree. Took me a while and lots of research to fell comfortable doing it. I hate buying new stuff cause I know it's just gonna cause me a big headache and lots of money in the future. That's why leasing seems more appealing. Give it back right before the warranty expires! That's for cars though! Wish they would lease bikes out. UA-cam is so helpful with things like this. Hope it helps you accomplish the task. It was my first time doing it while I videoed the whole thing process.
