Shooting 35mm Film in Schöneberg - Film February - Part 1 (Snippet 31)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 жов 2024
- Welcome to our first edition of the four part series we call "Film February!"
We will be shooting a different roll of color film each week this month on our Canon A-1. This week we shot Fujifilm Superia Xtra 400 and explored Schöneberg and I have to say the coolest thing that happened (spoiler alert!) was getting spotted on the street by Arianne and Pierre-Henri. We get to chat with so many of you here in the comments or over email, but to actually meet on the street and get to chat about life was such a special moment for Lou and I. We also loved getting to see the Gasometer covered in the thick fog.
Film February is all about pushing ourselves to keep exploring this city we call home even if it is freezing cold and has never ending bleak grey skies. It is already helping counteract our natural tendencies to hibernate this winter! It is also helping us to capture the city we love so dearly before we take off on our van journeys later this year.
Question of the Week:
What is one thing you have done this month to make you feel creative?

Thanks so much Christopher!!! It's awesome when we can take our time and get nice shots : ) Who knew cold, wet, foggy Berlin would be photogenic even if its not that much fun to be outside ; ) ---Lou
Lou's classical music choices are just great!
Thanks so much Hakan! I've been wanting to include choir music for a while now and finally got the chance!!!! ---Lou
Your smile is so darn contagious! I find myself grinning through out the entire vlog. Love what you guys are putting out, it's always interesting to see others shooting, makes you take notice how and what you look for when shooting film.
Thanks! Dana really does have an awesome smile : ) ---Lou
I feel like a broken record so I'll stop saying how much I love this channel every week. Sorry, just organically happens.
My first developed roll I shot (coming in the mail any day now) was shot on the Ultramax 400, so this was really great to see some of your shots using that film.
Thanks for the awesome comment! We just picked the only color films available at our local camera store ; ) ---Lou
You two inspire me so much and remind me to use my creativity. Thank you!
Thanks Austin! So glad you like our stuff : ) Just trying to create some nice uplifting youtube stories ; ) ---Lou
I cannot contain my excitement for the upcoming film episodes. Fantastic work guys! You guys have become one of my favorite channels on UA-cam!
Thanks so much for the awesome comment! It's going to be a really fun series to make I think, plus its super nice having a set intro. It's inspired me to make a little intro for the next chapter of our life when we move into a van ; ) -----Lou
You got some great shots, the fog and the cementary was striking, and of course I loved the dogs. Can't wait to see the next city!
Thanks so much! We start work on the next one tomorrow!!! ---Lou

Thanks so much for the wonderful comment! Really glad you liked the video ; ) ---Lou
Your color grading captures the foggy and freezing Schöneberg just perfectly. I really enjoyed it. :)
Thanks Michi! It was super photogenic! Who would have thought that cold and wet berlin would be so pretty on camera when its often depressing in real life! ---Lou
Wow, the shots of the dogs are amazing! The train shots, the fog, the opera at the beginning and it's lovely contrast with the latter songs is all so wonderful. Each time Dana's photo was shown I was like "okay, THIS one is my favorite one". Amazing video, guys!!
Hahha, thanks so much! Gloomy berlin is actually very photogenic and Dana did a great job capturing it!! ---Lou
Plant Based Traveler Hi Lou!! You're welcome! I also have to say I loved your style of hand-held camera shaky-ness throughout the video.
I just wanted to say, I found your channel a few hours ago and since then I have been watching all of your videos without a break and started bidding on a Canon AE - 1 on eBay. Thank you guys for helping me discover something I that excites me and also for making these remarkable personal videos. Much love xox
Hope your bidding went well! And thanks for watching : ) ----Lou

Dana these photos turned out so beautiful, you're so talented!!!
Thanks so much Luisa! Dana really is getting quite good! Even in this gloomy berlin winter... ----Lou PS can't wait to catchup soon!
answer to the question of the week: one thing I've done is watch videos like these. I enjoy watching how passionate and excited both of you are with filming and photographing. I also like to look through new Instagram accounts and get a bit of inspiration from that. thanks for the great content!
Thanks so much for the nice comment! Hope you're having a great week! ---Lou
Sometimes when I watch your videos I feel like you're the definition of true love.
Thanks for the beautiful comment Lou Lou (PS that's danas nickname for me!) ---Lou

Thanks so much Emily!! ---Lou
Hi, guys! beautiful works!
it seems Fujifilm Superia Xtra 400 looks much warmer than I have thought. I'd like to try it out by myself next week. looking forward to your next shoot. always have a good day! bless you.
Yeah, or its our scanning or developing process, but I'm pretty happy with the results!!
5:35 - You gained the dogs' trust and subsequently a better photo. There's a photography lesson there somewhere :)
Hahaha, Dana has decided she wants to do an entire video on just shooting dog portraits, turns out they are way more fun than asking for strangers' permission in the winter when everyones rushing from one place to the next! ---Lou
Hi Dana & Lou, I've started watching your videos recently and srl I am inspired by you guys, your lifestyle and your attitude towards life. It's trully beautiful
Thanks so much for the wonderful comment! Hope you find some other ones you like too! ---Lou
I can't wait for the next three parts to this series! Watching you guys shoot film & seeing how the pictures turn out is one of my favourite things :) like many of the comments below, the reason I found your channel was because I'd wanted to learn how to do this, and your videos helped so much. Such a fun process!
Thanks so much! We start work on the next part tomorrow!!! ---Lou
This just was the best intro I have ever seen.. gave me the chills!
The cinematography in this is amazing! Can't wait to see the rest of this series

Plant Based Traveler do you have plans on buying another camera? a medium format camera perhaps?
Hoopefully one day soon!
This video gives me life. I can't wait to start shooting film again. My camera broke along with my heart but it will be fixed soon enough. Love your videos!
Thanks so much Meredith!! Hope it gets fixed soon : ) ---Lou
beautiful choice of music in the beginning and so unusual as well.
Thanks Bob! I've been wanting to use choir music for ages, and finally got the chance!!!! ---Lou
Excellent! Thanks for sharing. Peace and love ❤️

30 seconds in the video and wow, already the visuals are stunning

Your videos are SUPER awesome!!
Thanks Ana! So happy you liked this one, it was chilly to film but I guess that adds to the effect, right! ---Lou
I'm so glad you're doing this project!! looking forward for the next roll. I've also been out more and exploring more of my city and bringing my film camera with me. i live in sydney, by the way. it really is a great excuse to go out and see the place you live in a little bit more differrently than you always do. keep making great videos guys! cheers.
Thanks for the nice comment! It really is a great way to travel within your own city, not spend a lot of money, but still get to explore so much : ) --Lou
You really captured the beauty of Schöneberg.
Hahaha, yeah, Dana did a great job! Weather was so cold and wet but on camera it all looks really cool! ---Lou
Another great video! I recently got a Olympus om-10 and stuck some ilford hp5+ 400 in black and white. Can't wait to get my first roll of film back! Learnt so much from your channel!

One thing I did last month to feel creative was shoot my first roll of black and white (ilford xp2). I'm hooked. I also found a Minolta XG-M for a great price in a local antiques store. And I've just started shooting Agfa Vista 200 which is just £1 in the UK at poundland. I look forward to seeing the rest of the series!
Thanks Luke! Should be really cool to see how all these different films behave ; ) ---Lou
lovely video and the photos look great
Thanks so much Reza! The fog actually ended up photographing really well, even if it was a little chilly! ---Lou
Wow! I totally got into film because of you guys. I actually came back from Berlin today having just shot my first roll of HP5!!
How cool!!! Hope it turned out okay ; ) --- Lou
I went past the park and didn't get to see the sculpture I seen most of Berlin but in a flash unfortunately my film camera developed problems during my stay so shot roughly 700 photos on DSLR I am still shooting film at home using a vast array of cameras I am glad you have overcome any difficulties and shown us Berlin at a slower pase than I did again wonderful photographs
Thanks so much for the nice comment! Hope you can get that issue with your camera sorted : ) ---Lou
i can't even explain how much i love your vídeos, and photos of course! kisses from Argentina
and you've been really inspiring too. I am saving money to fix my father's camera because of you! thanks, so excited to shoot film
How amazing! Good for YOU ; ) Goodluck with everything! Send us some photos once it's fixed! ---Lou
Looks and feels like i am watching a full movie. More like this! Lol
Glad you liked it! Was trying to give this one a short movie type feel so its cool you picked up on that! ---Lou
Plant Based Traveler the feel of the movie is like the old spy movies (russia etc etc) Thats what i got anyways. Pretty cool Lou. Now you make me want to go to europe! Deng it, imm going tomorrow! Lol
Such a great video!
Thanks so much for the nice comment! ---Lou
Look at how much more vibrant those colours are especially with the cat on the pink couch.

I love these vlogs so much!
Thanks!!! ---Lou
Great as always!
Thanks so much! Glad you liked this one : ) ---Lou
Been obsessed with your guys' channel ever since I found it! I love how the editing is fantastically not over the top- like you're making a genuine video diary as opposed to TV. Lou you definitely have a distinct editing style & its totally cool. This series is probably my favorite video set of yours because it reminds me of my time in Berlin & now I can't wait to go back at some point & shoot these neighborhoods myself! Thanks to binging on your videos within the space of a week or so, I went out & got myself a Canon A-1 as well- best sporadic purchase i've ever made lol. This particular episode is a particular favorite of mine- I love the look of those landscape/myst photos. Dana; That shot at 7:28 is like an old painting or something its gorgeous to look at. Do you by any chance remember the f.stop/shutter speed combo you were using for some of the landscape/myst shots?
Missing the videos but hope the planning & prep for the minivan is going well!!
Tobias, thank you so much for this beautiful comment. So sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I'm really happy you've connected to our voice adn our storytelling so deeply. And amazing to know you've gotten to experience the beauty of berlin too :) as for that one photo so sorry but i dont remember the camera settings as it was so long ago now. Thanks again for your support! hope all is well :) -Dana
you guys are just so amazingly awesome with what you are doing! keep it up and let's art! :)
Hahaha, thanks so much!!! ---Lou

Amazing video, you guys give me so much inspiration thank you!!
Thank you for watching Chloe!! So happy to hear you've connected with our videos :) - Dana
I can't wait until the Mitte one! My old neighborhood
Yup! That's the next one, then kreuzberg, and finally neukölln last but not least : ) ----Lou
Gives me lots of inspiration!
OMG I.LOVE.THIS.SO.MUCH!
Hahaha, THANKs for the awesome comment!!! ----Lou
Hi, just discovered your channel, love your work. I’ve subscribed, I’m in Australia. I use a Nikon fe2, love it
Thanks so much Harold! We shot that series in the cold of the winter ; ) ---Lou
photos came quite warm :) I must try this film
Yeah, that could also be the scanning or the developing at home I did, so its not the most precise thing to go off but they do look pretty good I think ; ) ---Lou
Hey guys! I'm a "plant based traveler" too currently - which means there aren't many opportunities for me to watch your videos...kinda sad but right now I had the time and wifi to watch at least this one and I gotta say it was beauuutiful as always! I just can't get enough of your videos and I really hope to be able to get into film photos as well once I'm back home in 7 months.
I hope you guys are doing great!
Lots of love from the other side of the world ^_^ xx
Thanks so much Lina! Hope your having a wonderful trip! Its so nice to get out travel and disconnect from the internet for a while ; ) ---Lou
love your videos💚💚
Thanks so much Ada!!!! ---Lou
As usual, one of my favourite moments of the week.
Now it's certain, next time I go back home I'll borrow my dad's old camera and shoot on film for the first time!
Go for it!! --Lou
Great to see you in Berlin! Gut gemacht! Gruß Markus
Thanks Marcus! Trying to get out and explore but its so cold so now we ahve this series to get us out of the house!! ---Lou
Cool video 👌, as much as i love my new canon, you still can't beat the good film slr, I still love using my canon A1.👍
Yeah theres something about the old cameras, they really are beautiful to use! ---Lou
I love these videos! I recently started trying to use 35mm too!
Thanks so much Catherine! ---Lou
Loving the videos so much, you guys give of this wonderful vibe. I have one question: Would you maybe like to do a video on your favorite areas/spots in Berlin? I might be going in one or two months and would love to skip all the touristy stuff that i've already seen and see some of the hidden gems instead! Much love from Amsterdam
Thanks so much! We've been thinking of doing a video like that for a while, but its really not as much fun in the winter... so not sure if we'll do it now or maybe in the spring, we shall seeee! ---Lou
Like, literally ordered a Super 8 camera just two days ago.. .you are soo inspiring ! I'm definitely subscribing ! It's pure art just watching you work !
eeek you have to let us know what you think of it!! Thanks so much for subscribing :) so happy to have you with us! - Dana
Wondeful video! Street photography is so cool! Dana, you're so good at taking photos! My favourite one is the photo of the trees on 7:28, it kinda looks like a paintibg, doesn't it? 😊 And those two dogs are sooo sweet! And that black cat lying on a cool pink toy sofa 😻 Would you guys want to have a pet?
Thanks so much for the nice comment : ) I will pass it on to Dana! That photo was also my favorite one, its really dark but it looks a lot like a painting or some magical landcape! ---Lou
Love this.
Thanks Rene!! ---Lou
The dog is a Dogue de Bordeaux :)
Pablo Strong
I was very definite that u watch their videos.i could feel that vibe thats y i subscribed both of ur channels
Oooooooh, thanks for the info : ) I will pass that onto Dana! ---Lou
I have had 2. 1 called Bullit and the other called Tiësto. Sadly they past away. They are soooo friendly and such family dogs. Thier is a Movie called Turner & Hooch. Hooch is also a dogue de Bordeaux. In Dutch they are called Bordeaux dog.
This was amazing!
Thanks Matt! Going to get started on the next one tomorrrow! ---Lou
Ahhh, I'll keep a look out for you when I'm in Berlin for a few days at the end of March :) I haven't decided which of my many film cameras I'll be bringing yet. I only have cabin baggage on the flights I've booked, so my medium format (120 film) cameras might have to stay in England :(
Hope you have a nice trip! We'd love to switch to medium format sometime soon, but its true, they are hefty cameras ; ) ---Lou
i love this channel so much
Thanks so much for the nice comment!!! ---Lou
Loved this
Thanks : ) --Lou
los amo chicos ❤❤
Muchas gracias Nuria ; ) ---Lou
I've been waiting for this!
ahahaha thanks for the nice comment! ---Lou
Really enjoy your video. Simply made my day :)
So happy you liked it! ---Lou
a silly question perhaps, but all the grainy/dirty/old look of your photo is bc of the film or how you shot it or bc of it's an old camera or you guys edit it? and also just wanted to say that I've found your channel yesterday and i'm already obsessed with it, you guys are incredible and adorable, I'm already a great admirer ;)
Thanks! I think its from the old camera/film stock used, that seems to be how most film stocks look when shot through our camera, I'm sure you could replicate it very easily with another similar model, the older the better I guess if you like the really dirty look, the grainy look comes from shooting with high ISO film! ---Lou
you guys make me so happy 😢 i'm getting a canon A1 soon, i cannot wait! and Dana, you're so cute!
aww thank you so much for this cute comment : )Hope you're having a great weekend! - Dana
Hey hey again :3 thanks for the video. U really pushed me right now to go out tomorrow in the morning with my Olympus and shoot the streets. Quick question - do you use the light meter?
Well the camera has an internal one we use for av mode but want to start shooting more fully manual since its seems to be underexposing a bit! ---Lou
Love it, especially with the fog! But I'm curious - what color filter did you use for that very last iPhone shot? Or did you colored it manually? It looks nice!
