5:25 CORRECTION, my dudes! Absinthe nowadays is made without the hallucinogenic properties it once had. When Poe was drinking it, absinthe likely still contained those LSD-like components - so Poe most certainly could be hallucinating.

It's actually a common misconception that Absinthe causes hallucinations. Absinthe contains thujone which is found in wormwood (one of the components used to make absinthe). When people say Absinthe has hallucinogenic effects, they're usually referring to wormwood. No studies has proven that thujone in wormwood, even in high doses, can cause hallucinations, but it can be very toxic! There's only a trace left of the chemical by the end of Absinthe production. Absinthe does have such a high proof that it can be extremely dangerous when too much is consumed. Alcohol poisoning can have cause hallucinations, mostly auditory, though the side effect is rare.
Even before the ban of Absinthe in 1912, no hallucinogenic were used. It was a rumor then as well.
I've done quite a bit of research on the subject of Absinthe combined with Edgar Allan Poe. I'm actually currently writing another paper on Edgar Allan Poe. I get a bit too excited talking about Poes life lol

or perhaps Henry Reynolds was an ambassador for a different, larger political figure so he used Poe to further the votes in the direction he wanted the politics to move toward

Alcohol withdrawal actually can cause hallucinations. My aunt went cold turkey and hallucinated my uncle had killed himself. Actually a very plausible theory if he hadn’t drank for about a day or two
Yeah, alcohol withdrawal are the most dangerous withdrawal, I think? I'm a sober drug addict but the alcoholics always seemed to have it worse off.
I had a seizure and was hospitalized while quitting drinking. I hallucinated for several days, from being confused to why I was covered in blood being loaded into an ambulance (hit my head when I collapsed) to getting discharged 3 days later the whole thing felt like It took place in a separate reality. If it wasn’t for the very real bills I would have thought the whole thing was a dream.
My brother got alcohol poisoning and while he was in detox he had hallucinations that his wife killed their kids.
Also, absinthe at the time was not the most well regulated alcohol. Many distillers of cheap absinthe would cut their product with other substances in order to cut down the cost. Also, good absinthe is distilled from wormwood, which means, again considering the lack of oversight, that it very easily could become dangerous when consumed in large quantities
