#21 Hay Bales, Gateau Breton and Finishing my Knitted Wool Hat

This week started warmish and ended very cold and frosty. We finished the new goat enclosure enough to move the goats to it. They're so happy there. The barn still needs to be finished. We found a local source for hay for the winter so we've been rolling hay bales around to different locations for the animals. We don't have a tractor so a few of us pushing and rolling works just fine, as long as it's not uphill. Katie finished the wool hat she's been knitting. If you remember we sheared some of the sheep this past October. Katie washed the wool, brushed it, spun it and now knitted it into a warm winter hat.
Katie also made a Gateau Breton, which is a French Butter Cake from Brittany. She added a blueberry jam in the middle from the blueberries we picked this past summer.
Here's what she did.
Gateau Breton
Blueberry Jam:
In a pot, it was about 2-3 cups of blueberries, a little sugar and half a lemon squeezed. Let that cook till you can mash it with a potato masher. Set aside when it looks thick and shiny like.
Cake:
2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
2 sticks salted butter softened (if you don't use salted butter, add a bit of salt)
5 eggs (1 whole, 4 yolks)
dash of vanilla
To a mixer add the flour and sugar and butter and mix till it's all crumbly.
(Or you can do this by hand).
Add the vanilla and eggs, then turn on the mixer and mix till it comes together away from the sides of the mixer and forms a dough.
Press half of the dough in a buttered pie pan.
Spread the blueberry jam (you may not use all of it)
Roll out the other half of the dough and lay it on top of the jam.
Paint the top with egg yolk then use a fork to decorate the dough.
Put in a 350 degree oven and bake 45-50 minutes.
