Janet Jackson was definitely her idol. Aaliyah may have gotten the idea to compose this after seeing Janet perform her domestic violence anthem "What About" during the Vh1 Fashion Awards 1998. Makes sense due to Babygirl beginning production for this album in 1999.
@@Lamarization I never try to pin the two ! I wholeheartedly don’t but it’s weird energy Beyoncé has towards Aaliyah that I can’t put my hand on ! Well to any high status woman in the industry ! But yeah they definitely keep it on the low ! I wonder why they all do that ! Maybe her tragic death is Erie to them! Maybe they know things we don’t
I think what I love about this song is it’s complexity, not just in the lyrics but also in the way she sang it. It could easily have been one dimensional but it really paints a complex story. The guy in question isn’t necessarily a monster (yet) but it’s made clear they’re at the point where things have started getting disrespectful on both sides. But he’s now crossed a line and gone a step further, implying she’s at risk if she remains. It’s also clear in the lyrics he hasn’t actually hit her yet but his handling of her during the argument was rough enough to suggest he’s not far off doing so. Something she’s now realising she can’t stick around for, despite the bond that’s still there. It’s like the next stage after WNAR. Being snapped at in the morning and stood up with no call is one thing, being called names and being hit is something else entirely. It’s as though it captures the week after the incident, that place where the initial shock and anger gives way to confusion, hurt and examination of “how the hell did we get here and is there a way to prevent things getting violent again?”. The sad part being, SHE can’t. That’s on him. Lastly, I love that while Aaliyah isn’t a typical heavy-toned “soul singer” she wrung every emotion out of the situation described. This song is jazzy, inventive, heartbreaking and arresting all at once.., and showcases her vocals without resorting to MOR balladry. In short, a Flawless Gem💯
She stayed with him at the end of the day! This is a regular relationship! But I like how you clearly overlooked her part in this relationship and Aaliyah admits to continuing the bullshit and instigating that leads to anger and psychical abuse. A power struggle inside the relationship. This song is her putting all the blame on him while they continue their toxic relationship that she loves! She enjoys the ups and downs of the relationship. This song is a threat to her man that she is willing to escalate the violence if he continues to be psychical with her. I do agree only Aaliyah could sing this song the softness and weaknesses of her voice is perfect for this song!

However, only one of them has gotten physical. Hence, the responsibility for the physical violence is not shared. A person, man or woman always has the choice to walk away before laying hands. Which is what the main protagonist is left to mull over in the song. How they both got here? What part did she play? Could things get worse?
