    Janet Jackson was definitely her idol. Aaliyah may have gotten the idea to compose this after seeing Janet perform her domestic violence anthem "What About" during the Vh1 Fashion Awards 1998. Makes sense due to Babygirl beginning production for this album in 1999.

    I think what I love about this song is it’s complexity, not just in the lyrics but also in the way she sang it. It could easily have been one dimensional but it really paints a complex story.
    The guy in question isn’t necessarily a monster (yet) but it’s made clear they’re at the point where things have started getting disrespectful on both sides. But he’s now crossed a line and gone a step further, implying she’s at risk if she remains.
    It’s also clear in the lyrics he hasn’t actually hit her yet but his handling of her during the argument was rough enough to suggest he’s not far off doing so. Something she’s now realising she can’t stick around for, despite the bond that’s still there. It’s like the next stage after WNAR. Being snapped at in the morning and stood up with no call is one thing, being called names and being hit is something else entirely.
    It’s as though it captures the week after the incident, that place where the initial shock and anger gives way to confusion, hurt and examination of “how the hell did we get here and is there a way to prevent things getting violent again?”. The sad part being, SHE can’t. That’s on him.
    Lastly, I love that while Aaliyah isn’t a typical heavy-toned “soul singer” she wrung every emotion out of the situation described. This song is jazzy, inventive, heartbreaking and arresting all at once.., and showcases her vocals without resorting to MOR balladry. In short, a Flawless Gem💯

      She stayed with him at the end of the day! This is a regular relationship! But I like how you clearly overlooked her part in this relationship and Aaliyah admits to continuing the bullshit and instigating that leads to anger and psychical abuse. A power struggle inside the relationship. This song is her putting all the blame on him while they continue their toxic relationship that she loves! She enjoys the ups and downs of the relationship. This song is a threat to her man that she is willing to escalate the violence if he continues to be psychical with her. I do agree only Aaliyah could sing this song the softness and weaknesses of her voice is perfect for this song!

    • @damyanthelion
      @damyanthelion 2 роки тому +3

      @@professorxaviour3649 “But I like how you clearly overlooked her part”
      More like you overlooked this entire paragraph “The guy in question isn’t necessarily a monster (yet) but it’s made clear THEY’RE at the point where things have started getting disrespectful on both sides. But he’s now crossed a line and gone a step further, implying she’s at risk if she remains.”
      As I said, both have devolved into a 50/50 tit-for-tat dynamic, that part wasn’t missed. However, only one of them has gotten physical. Hence, the responsibility for the physical violence is not shared. A person, man or woman always has the choice to walk away before laying hands. Which is what the main protagonist is left to mull over in the song. How they both got here? What part did she play? Could things get worse?

    “It’s a harrowing document,” he said. “A non-disclosure agreement on both her part and Kelly’s, vowing not to pursue further legal claims for physical abuse. So, it wasn’t just an underage sexual relationship, he hit her, allegedly, according to that court document.”

    This my favorite album/body of work of her's ... the growth, maturity in her content topics and he maturity in her vocals /microphone presence/mastering her new grown-up sound / image . She got me through some many hard teenage brake upps and young heart aches ..so ahead of the rest in her era with catchy new wavie music/trends ..and growing into her more elegant /more higher celebrity status flawlessly..I miss her so much😔 ... tbh im 30 yrs old and still need tho hear her perspective on relationship issues smh 🤦🏾‍♂️

      I don’t think so. Aaliyah didn’t any of her write her songs this was written by someone else. And when she was alive she never said anything bad about R Kelly even after their situation. And plus she never talks about her personal life.

      @@jasminesanders6034 Yes, you are partially right. However, she admitted to talking with her writers about what she’s been through to inspire them to write. This song is definitely something she went through…gotta watch the behind the scenes of the Aaliyah album. She sheds light on the concept of this album being her most personal.

      @@jasminesanders6034 I just watched a video shedding light on this (watch Lailah Lynn's video on Aaliyah's posthumous song) where a reporter detailed on his podcast he retrieved legal documents that were originally sealed after the annulment, shows that Aaliyah signed an NDA to not pursue further legal claims for physical abuse. So he did in fact abuse her.

    I don't think this song was about R. Kelly but the emotion put into it was. Singing a song about domestic violence isn't an easy thing to do no matter how charming Aaliyah was. She had to find the inspiration from somewhere in her life to bring these lyrics to life.
