- Iris Williams OBE (born 20 April 1944) is a Welsh singer. Williams reached the peak of her popularity during the 1980s.
Williams was born in Pontypridd, South Wales. Brought up in a children's home, she won a scholarship to the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. In 1979, she had her biggest UK hit, "He Was Beautiful", a song based on the already well-known theme from The Deer Hunter with lyrics by Cleo Laine. In Wales, however, she had already had major success, particularly with "Pererin Wyf" (1971) a Welsh-language version of "Amazing Grace". As a result of hitting the national charts, she was given her own BBC series

Saw Iris in Chipping Sodbury Folk Club around 1973 Never to be forgotten!
I was once Iris William's backing organist in the late 1970s, when she was working with the Eric Delaney Band and the comedian Jerry Stevens at the Pressed Steel Fisher Club in Birmingham, and also at a second gig somewhere deep in the West Midlands a bit later on. It is one of those experiences I treasure, and glad I had the opportunity to do. Best wishes Iris.....
Every singer has their own song. This surely belongs to Iris....Magnifisent!

Iris, you are also beautiful, I even gave you a gentle helping hand as you went up the steps into the audience, whilst singing in your show, on a cruise, my moment of unforgettable pride!
Iris will never know that I have loved her since hearing this record way back when. I hope that she is well and enjoying life. I will take this disc on to my desert island! Love you iris.
Beautiful with much Feeling and compassion
So is she. Perfect match for this Beautiful song.
Absolutely done beautiful by Iris❤😊
I remember this from the 70's and this instantly brought back memories of almost 40 years ago. Cleo Lane wrote the words and also recorded it but this was the popular version. Lovely voice and so good to take a trip down memory lane, a bit sad - but beautiful as I approach mid 60's and the last time I heard it I was mid 20's.
How Beautiful. I just heard this on the radio and had to find out more about this singer.
I don't know the Cleo Laine version. Maybe I should. But I have this one. It's all I need to send me into raptures. How pure. How sweet. Simple gorgeous.
Memories of a beautiful lady sleep tight one day I will fulfill my dreams and hold you again until then love you always xxx

You were the only one on World Tour Saga RUBY who had had a standing ovation as they are a hard crowd re overfed & picky but knew ou were the business. How about theaters here are too fond of imitations we want original artists who will appreciated you, Good Luck. From Stella Dennett

One of the best singers to come out of Wales. She isn't even listed in their top 30 ever performers neither is Dorothy Squires. Who ever compiled this list should be shot.
Makes you wonder .the real reason

Cavatina By John Williams
I've just seen this on totp. I've faintly heard it before but this was in detail. Wow. How amazing. Was it given the credit it deserves at the time? I wasn't born then.
likewise. i discovered this last nite too.
@@davidmyles9967 I kept singing it over and over after and it came to me they played it at my nans funeral. How depressing.
@@lilme7052 yes, or a kind of a nice memory maybe. i like discovering old classic songs like this on BBC4 usually on a friday nite on an old TOTP. nina simones " lonesome cities" i discovered this way, not totp maybe. i enjoyed when they showed a load of old shirley bassey specials each week about a year ago.
Beautiful voice. Just discovering her through a documentary on Mabel Mercer. I wonder if Jane Olivor was influenced by her? Jane sounds a lot like her in style.
How can one improve on the previous comments
She died a death when the press compared her to Shirley Bassey. She was drilled out. Show-biz snuffed. A reason for that.
In what way is she like Shirley bassy
@@ashleywilliams1820 Nobody said she was like Bassey - she was COMPARED to Bassey.
Theme from The Deerhunter.
