You gotta find the VSTs and instruments that sound good to YOU. Sound selection is relative. Someone could take the worst sound and flip it into a whole new sound. Making a good sample comes from studying the good samples. I would even try to recreate the best 70’s samples just to get an idea of what I’m trying to do. You’ll start to learn more when you actually apply the knowledge. But I’ll have to explain further in a video or sumn. TLDR; study & apply musical techniques from professionals even if you have to recreate something from them, it’s still learning.
