Homemade Pipe Roller Makes Polytunnel Frames. (Finally!) Or is it a hoop house?

  • Well it's taken a while, but finally I'm able to make hoops with my pipe rolling machine. (I could make complete rings with it too, but I'm not sure what I'd do with those.) And now it makes sense that I made it on one of my narrow-gauge railway trolleys..

    Tim is one who will persevere
    Clearly a man who has no fear
    With iron and gear and a railroad trolley
    To the untrained eye it seemed a folly
    Fits and spurts and a curly cue fail
    A magical result which his fans will hail
    Straight curved pipe he has now
    Stand up Tim and take a bow

    nice work tim you ever notice if you try to cut a pipe with a hacksaw length ways the pipe starts to bite the blade because there is some type of residual stress inside the grain structure i have a theory that causes the pipe to wonder off while rolling i plan to stress relieve it with heat using a rose bud torch then let it cool and start to roll it out the pipe also gets soft i will only attempt this on thick wall pipe congratulations

    Excellent.. do you know about the clever welding of the plastics the Hungarian folk use ?? You need a board with gouges out of it. An iron. A bent piece of wire. And s damp tea cloth. If you want details let me know.

  • @aidanscapeing
    @aidanscapeing 3 роки тому +1

    did you think of making the hoops in two sections, it would allow you to make a bigger hoop and have more head room in the poly-tunnel

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, thanks. Perfect for bigger tunnels, but this is the size we need next

    I love the ingenuity. I tried making a roller bender once but gave up after the first attempt, I ran out of time so changed the design of what I was doing. My question is does it make enough of a cost saving to not just buy a Polly tunnel? I like to do things myself but often it ends up costing more. Lol

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  3 роки тому +1

      It wouldn't pay if you wanted only one polytumnnel, but I have lots of other things in mind too...

  • @tob007
    @tob007 3 роки тому

    Oh wow, thick-walled pipe! no wonder you had so much trouble bending it. That stuff is so strong. Are the winds that strong in Ireland they would flatten thin-walled poly tunnel!?! Cheers from California.

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  3 роки тому +1

      Yes they are! But also, I just can't find any thin-walled pipe..

  • @jungle6201
    @jungle6201 3 роки тому

    have you considered leaving a few feet at either end of the pipe strait if thats possible? it would give you alot more space at the edges of the polytunnel as the sides wouldnt slope down so sharply

    Biggest lesson for me in this are the bearing axles. I would never try to use square tubing, I would not even trust a pipe in their place. it seams thou, the forces involved are distributed fairly evenly.

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  3 роки тому

      I'm surprised too. I even bought a length for solid square bar to replace the hollow box when it bent, but it hasn't.
