Takes me back a few years ago. They pack everything in such a tight space. Glad to see you didn’t have the antilock brake D block behind the washer fill. My 2002 with 238k miles had something get into the main pulley, tore the time cover to pieces and gasket slipped the timing belt off. Bent 4 valves, and I was reliving my adventure of doing that very job watching your video. Of course I’m old school so no fancy gadgets just the standard knowledge of sounds and mechanical sense. Great videos!
I bought a 04 civic ex with 130k with broken timing belt for $500. The body and interior was immaculate!! I just bought a jdm engine for $550, a gasket kit for about $100, and a timing belt/water pump kit for $70. After all said and done, I had a running car for around $1300. Still have it 4 years/80k miles later!
I bought a JDM d17 engine I only had it for 1 month the engine turned off on the freeway now it has a slow/ no crank , the timing belt is still on. Any recommendations ?

great video, you showed every aspect of proper diagnostic troubleshooting. yeah your labor rates are cheap for the work you do. you are a blessing to your customers.
Great diagnostics. That Civic is definitely an interference engine. Looks like those pistons kissed the valves for sure. A lot of the Civics, Accords, Preludes are interference engines. Its a bad day when a Honda timing belt breaks. Best option for your customer is a different completely rebuilt head $240-$300 , $250 head gasket set with bolts, belt, tensioner, water pump etc. Thats if he can salvaged the pistons, in some cases you can unless they have a hole. But he has to do it his self DIY. My daughter just did a head gasket on this same engine 1.7L the video will be out soon. Great work South Main you handle your content like a real boss, God Bless.

A lot of people don't know about timing belt maintenance and if the people that do his repairs don't suggest it to the customer that's what happens. It appears that he had regular oil changes done however. It's spotless inside. Nice job, Eric.
Send it over Ivan, he's doing a valve job on a Prizm. Broke a timing belt on a 73 Hondo Civic. Was doubling clutching as I was downshifting from 4th to second and just as I was coming out of the curve hit the redline and that was all she wrote. Had my dad help me tow her back home and before the night was over, I had a new belt on her and was ready for some more fun with the Hondo. Love that car, great on gas and because she was a rust bucket I could park her anywhere and not worry about door dings.
The coffee cup on top of the engine at the beginning of the video reminded me of how my mom's uncle used to set the timing on older cars. With the motor running he'd put his cup of Joe on top of the motor then turn the distributor until the ripples in the coffee were gone.
Excellent vid, shows why you should follow the manufacturer's scheduled service intervals (not the dealers). With proper maintenance that's easily a 225-300k mile cars. I assumed Honda 4 cylinders were all chain driven, I was wrong. I would have had you fix it, still cheaper than a replacement at that time and you would have done the job right.
I bet the timing belt shredded partially, jumped time, but kept spinning the cams out of time to cause the carnage. FUBAR! The most bulletproof t-belt engine that I've come across is the Toy-oater 3.4L V6 ('96 to '04 4-Runner, Tacoma). Non-interference and a wide beefy belt. Have a customer with 200k on his original belt on an '04 Tacoma...runs like new :)
I have done about a dozen Hondas like this and never even check for valves bending I throw a new belt on and 100% of the time they have been good to go. ALso my turbo Honda has like 5 bent valves still drive it every week without issues. 450hp 1.6

Yep don't skimp! I did the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, spring, upper and lower timing cover, and head gasket at 208,000 miles, and i saw pieces of the timing cover gasket on the floor!. One cold day in Houston, went to crank it and nothing. But i looked at this video as well as old school funks vids to help me fix it!!!!!!!! Still running strong!!!!
I had a timing belt fail on my Porsche 944S and it bent most of the valves. The repair was very costly, but worth it for a nice vintage sports car. I hope the owner lets you repair it. I look forward to that video (series!). Thanks for the video!
+Joris Goedbloed Anything from VAG is gonna hit the valves. Water is wet, the sky is blue, VW/Audi/Porsche have interference engines. It sucks too because the chain driven engines like to eat those guide rails. Once that happens it's a ticking time bomb.
+Jacksonkellyfreak You are right, interference engine, but the Honda was said to be the same and the result of the timing belt breakage was much the same as well. Only difference, my car was worth the effort and money repairing it.
+Jacksonkellyfreak nope, broke the chain on my vr6, cranked a bunch before looking in the oil cap and seeing no chain movement, removed head,no bent valves or marks on pistons, still running fine today
kauboi Dude go buy a lottery ticket because the VR is most certainly interference. I'm not saying it can't miss the valves, maybe you had them in a position that they were just slightly open, but that is a very rare case. But I can tell you ALL VR6 engines are interference.
Thanks for this video : ) Showing my teenage drivers this video. I have suggested to them save your car, follow the manual scheduled maintenance. Arrr shucks. Would have been EPIC to see another multi part video series on doing the head on a Honda engine. The RAV4 and EJ253 vids were epic. If it was a manual transmission it might have been worth getting an engine from a scrap yard, but chances are the transmission doesn't have much life left in it at 165k and probably not a whole load of maintenance. I prefer Toyota's. But my sister has whats sold in the US as a Honda fit. Its literally had nothing go wrong with it in 9 years/70,000 miles besides some judder in the CVT that a fluid change fixed. Its a strange engine, 1.4 petrol, SOHC and its chain driven. Its actually as efficient as a diesel if you drive it properly. Gotta love Asian vehicles.
I just Bought one with a broken timing belt, Cylinder 1 & 3 Intake valves bent 1.7L engine.I also had the same thought that valves don't bend on the civic's but you learn some thing new every day.
Man Eric I've never ever seen a Honda hit. Personally I don't like them, but in my experience they're excellent cars. Really surprised. Not about the timing belt because if you neglect anything it's gonna break, but frankly I'm pretty taken aback by it.
+tomswonderfulworld The only ones I've pulled off had the belt teeth sheered off by the crank gear, fortunately for the owners they all just needed a belt to get back on the road.
The pistons won! We had 14 1983 Ford Rangers with the 2.3L that were non-interference engines. I think Ford recommended 60K on the timing belt life and about to the mile the belts would break but no bent valves.
Love Mrs. O's reaction! I can vouch for the Astro 1128 ratchet, bought it through amazon and it has some nut to it for it's size. Definitely worth the money.
I had a 2003 with the 2.4 4 cylinder. That engine was interference fit and at about 240,000km she let go and bent the no.2 intake valve. No head or piston damage so a whack of new parts and off she goes ! Regardless of OEM recommendations I've always been confident of belts and chains until about 200,000km ( 120,00 miles ? ) IMO at 200 ( 120 ) change it just do it regardless of what the book says.
I changed my original timing belt on my 2002 Honda civic at 110,000 miles in the year 2016... And don't ever cheap out on the timing belt. I once did a Chev Aveo with a cheap no name timing belt. It lasted about 30,000 miles before it broke and half the valves smashed into the pistons.
'89 Honda Prelude timing belt broke at 105,000 miles. No internal damage to the engine. No interference issues on that older style engine. Replaced timing belt, water pump, and drive belts at a cost of $350. Ran fine after that. Thanks for showing what usually happens with the "newer engines" where the valves and pistons collide when the timing belt breaks.
Honda recommends 90,000 for a timing belt change, which is when my neighbor had his done at the dealer, but they screwed up the job and didn't even use a Honda timing belt, the tensioner spring had come off and was wedged between the crank pulley and the crank sensor, thank goodness the engine wasn't damaged, I replaced everything with genuine Honda parts and it ran great, they used a dayco belt that wasn't even the right width.
Great video. I wonder if that timing belt was original. My 2009 Civic has a timing chain and I was told that it doesn't need to be serviced unless it stretches. It already has 150,000 miles and still runs like new.
oh watching this video 6yrs later...with events of today...one could totally now justify the cost of repair today... $2k repair vs $30k new car...totally going with the $2k :)
Love the tool store. I took care of my Christmas there a couple of days ago. :) Loved the video, great lesson for me on how to perform a leak down test...more tools needed!
I bought an 99 Acura TL with a busted timing belt for $400 last year. Definitely hit valves. Car was obviously abused when I started looking deeper. Original belt and it had 185k miles. Decided that the engine was not healthy enough to keep so I bought a replacement engine with supposedly 86k miles for $800. Runs like a dream now but its become a money pit due to the previous abuse. Recently found out that someone took out SRS, TCS, and ABS bulbs from the cluster. All those lights were on when I put bulbs in. So it was a deathtrap. Hopefully it's an easy fix. Moral of the story is ask a lot more questions if you are about to buy a car that doesn't run and has a bad battery. Those dash lights are important.
Things to bring when buying a used car: Jump pack and scan tool. If the person selling the car gets angry for you wanting to hook up a scan tool to it, get suspicious.
UA-cam says that it's been 6 days since your last video. I hope you're not away from the shop spending quality time with your family. I ain't movin' from this chair till you git back.
Yeah. I had that happen on a 2004 Aveo LS at about 120K. The damage to the engine was minor despite me being on the gas at the time (had it floored going about 70 on the highway, trying to get around a truck). In my case, it was a pulley that broke. My dad and I did the job, and it went surprisingly well. Kicked up and ran for a while. The bottom end of the motor went about 20,000 miles later due to oil pressure issues that developed with that motor. Sold it for a grand and got the Taurus a few months later.
Eric I'm learning sounds of an engine good and bad, is it possible to do a demonstration of a known good compression vs a known bad compression sound. I would watch it over and over!
Every time I hear of somebody scrapping a car because the repair is a little over the resale they get themselves into something that costs far more money to keep and run.
The resale is low because people consider cars more for status than they do for the transportation appliance aspect. It would be certainly cheaper to put in another $2k into it than $20k for a new replacement, but it wouldn't have any snazzy.
@Robert Slackware Sir, that is so true. Many don't think about the added cost of higher insurance. When obama came up with cash for clunkers, and said people need to buy a car that gets better gas mileage, I figured if my old Dodge gets 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway it would take a lot of miles at 30 mpg to cover the cost of insurance, and the cost of a new vehicle. I will just keep my old Dodge, and Cadillac. The caddy gets bad gas mileage but I enjoy driving it. It's a 76 coup de Ville nice ride
DTR RTD that’s what I was thinking when Eric said that the customer was going to scrap it. I would snatch that car for $500, work on the engine myself and then drive it till it couldn’t anymore. It would be cheaper just to dish out the 2k rather than dish out 20k over 4 years plus interest.
I had a very close customer of mine (the father of my life long best friend who died of a heart attack 3 days past his 22nd birthday) who had this happen. It was the cars second engine which was from a junkyard with pretty low miles and he had it installed by a shop that is known by car people to be a bit shady... the original engine was burning oil HORRIBLY at over 300k but the car was and still is MINT for being in NY. So they had a used engine put in and less than 3 months later it shut off going down the road on Ralph. So he called me on the side of the road, I came out, and it didn't sound like it had ZERO compression like your example, but I ended up pulling the distributor cap, had him crank it, and no spiny spiny of the cam driven dizzy... the thing that REALLY gets me is he had paid for a Timing belt kit to be installed on that engine since the engine was already out of the car so it would be CAKE.. but it was a dry cracked, shredded, HONDA belt that broke... like 6 wrecked valves when I pulled the head... LUCKILY, a friend of mine had an identical motor with a rod knock he pulled out of a car and sold me the head off it. Had it resurfaced and pressure checked, slapped on Ralphs bottom end, and it's still going strong 4 years later....
Pretty sure it is an interference engine, but that also means the interference can be between the valves, ie dohc one pulley slips ex whacks int. SOCH here, usually no damage.
hi, great vids guy, I work on my own cars, a 1999 xj, 2002 ford e150, 200o buick century. 2011 nissan 1.6 versa and my project car 1984 mercedes 300sd. i always watch your vids to see if any of mine come in. good work.
I lost a timing belt prematurely (I'd already had it replaced once and it broke early) on my first car: an orange Ford EXP from '82. No scalloped pistons on that baby.. We were on our way to the St. Louis airport started uphill on a turn ramp transitioning interstates and heard a pop, RPMs went to nothing and clackety, clackety, clack as the pistons slammed into the valves. I paid to have the top end repaired and 9 months later the crankshaft broke. Paid to have that fixed and a year later it was overheating with a bad radiator. Replaced that and about a week later it was stolen and driven to Manhattan Island and left double parked with a broken window and some new body dents. Told them to keep it at that point... My wife told me, "I think God took that piece of junk away from you before it disassembled around on the highway because you were too stubborn to do it yourself..." HAHAHA She always was a smart one.
Hi Eric I believe that all Honda carb (civic ) engines don't hit valves BUT some injection one's do.However I have never seen a injection one bend valve's but there is always a first time for everything.Tam.
Nice video as usual. Good camera work and very informative. Honda build great engine but don't miss out on basic servicing and change the belt every 60'000 miles folks.
dang, just his luck it smacked em. I've seen a few 1.7's that survived the broken belt. but hey, the damage is done. good video Eric, thanks for all your videos, and Merry Christmas to you and you and your family. God bless.

Dude go buy a lottery ticket because the VR is most certainly interference.
D'oh Saves $$$ and time away from the "shoe leather express."
When I first came across your videos I thought you were saying "Welcome to the Self Made Auto Channel" lol
Keep up the great work! Looking forward to your tool link.
Awesome channel Eric O I enjoy all your videos Im a Master ASE technician also Master Honda tech with 28 years experience I love watching your videos as well as others You can ALWAYS learn something new if you keep your eyes and ears open. I always love the break parts cleaner LOL that stuff is useful in soooooooo many ways ! Keep em coming bro !
+Grabblin Mechanic Haha glad you enjoy. I don't have any of those fancy patches. ETCG does and that is why he is the real master mechanic of YT. Thanks for watching :)
Great video ! Good to see that the guard dog is almost on the job 😊
+N Smith Pfff only way she'd come over to get someone is if they had a cheeseburger lol
I was hoping to see the ritual you had for a similar diagnosis you did on a vehicle that ended up going to el deshuesadero .cannot remember the title of the video, but it looked like you thank (it)for the service it provided during its life time.ho well, maybe next time.thank you Eric and fine co workers on your team.
I just replaced the head gasket on one of these. Cousin moved down here with it from Buffalo. I'm in Texas. I've never seen so much rust in my life.
Yeah man same here, I'm in Houston, and all these vids from the east coast have so much rust, but we got tons of rain and humidity!!!!!
@@dmonster808 it's from the snow and they salt the roads
I had an 03 civic 1.7 with 400 000 km on the tranny when I sold it and it's still on the rd 4 years later
Jap engines and gearboxes have good tolerance in their builds.
I just Bought one with a broken timing belt, Cylinder 1 & 3 Intake valves bent 1.7L engine.I also had the same thought that valves don't bend on the civic's but you learn some thing new every day.
+MrAKPAPA78 Sure do!
Great video. Like how you double check that everything else is right before the repair. Great job.
Man Eric I've never ever seen a Honda hit. Personally I don't like them, but in my experience they're excellent cars. Really surprised. Not about the timing belt because if you neglect anything it's gonna break, but frankly I'm pretty taken aback by it.
I know of a place called Japan Direct and they will change out a motor with a used one for about a grand of so! Worked great on my 02 Civic!!!
"Must be from the VTEC." That cracked me up hahaha.
It doesn't even have VTEC hahaha. It's a D17A1.
@@nashstephenson1877 Shitty engine, give me the D16Y8 or a D16Z6 instead. Or even better, give me a B20B high compression and ill drop it in easily.
Every 1.7L Honda I have worked on with a busted timing belt has had bent valves.............Great videos Eric!
+tomswonderfulworld Oh wow that is nuts because it is just the opposite for me.
Hey man good for you on your wonderful business and happy family.
Love Mrs. O's reaction! I can vouch for the Astro 1128 ratchet, bought it through amazon and it has some nut to it for it's size. Definitely worth the money.
+rider9195 I love that little tool
+South Main Auto Repair hey bud what the brand or model number on that leak down tester you got there
it is a snap-on
I had a 2003 with the 2.4 4 cylinder. That engine was interference fit and at about 240,000km she let go and bent the no.2 intake valve. No head or piston damage so a whack of new parts and off she goes !
Regardless of OEM recommendations I've always been confident of belts and chains until about 200,000km ( 120,00 miles ? )
IMO at 200 ( 120 ) change it just do it regardless of what the book says.
That little honda engine looks real clean! I bet they changed the oil very regularly.
Great diagnosis Eric.
"Always cut towards your buddy not your body".. hahaha. Damn shame about the car. Strange seeing a Honda not pass 200k.
+CravinMorehead420 Words to live by
CravinMorehead420 if they would have maintained the engine and put a belt on it during its life they would still be driving it.
Lack of maintenance. This was probably the original timing belt.
Yep, a little planning ahead and proper replacement before it broke could have saved this.
Anything will fail prematurely without proper preventative maintenance. Even a Honda.
I like the tools you use I bought that 1128 air ratchet
Eric, congratulations for your 20k subs =)
Great wife you have there. Truly blessed.
Great video. I wonder if that timing belt was original. My 2009 Civic has a timing chain and I was told that it doesn't need to be serviced unless it stretches. It already has 150,000 miles and still runs like new.
Can u do a tool box tour sometime
oh watching this video 6yrs later...with events of today...one could totally now justify the cost of repair today...
$2k repair vs $30k new car...totally going with the $2k :)
Nice post mortem! Great channel
Love the tool store. I took care of my Christmas there a couple of days ago. :) Loved the video, great lesson for me on how to perform a leak down test...more tools needed!
+wyattoneable Thanks, well we always need more tools right?
Good video eric o always glad to watch you at work my friend keep up the good work.
Anybody who asks me what a good car is, I tell them a Corolla with non interference engine.
Stay gold.
Nice video
I appreciate this video! My son has the same car and year and that sound is exactly what his car sounds like.
+argonian bilbo ask a lot more questions = get a lot more lies haha
South Main Auto Repair always taking that risk. Sometimes you get cooked like I did. oh well you win some you lose some lol
Oh I hate when people take out bulbs.
Things to bring when buying a used car: Jump pack and scan tool.
If the person selling the car gets angry for you wanting to hook up a scan tool to it, get suspicious.
Yo Eric.
I'm at work today too, and I'm not self employed.
Merry Christmas to you and the clan.
Great video right away you know what was going on in the car, love it thank you
UA-cam says that it's been 6 days since your last video. I hope you're not away from the shop spending quality time with your family. I ain't movin' from this chair till you git back.
+tommie293 Yep takin a little break and had some company this weekend is all
Happy New Year Eric may God Bless you and your family...
Another example of where a timing belt versus a timing chain really sucks .
@Robert Slackware
Sir, that is so true.
Very good video thanks for your optimism and joy
It's always nice when you're working on something that all of the bolts are the same size...
love the new intro sounds like a 4.0l inline 6 jeep engine cranking over
Pretty sure it is an interference engine, but that also means the interference can be between the valves, ie dohc one pulley slips ex whacks int. SOCH here, usually no damage.
I stand corrected. I'll watch the entire video before I comment any more.
hi, great vids guy, I work on my own cars, a 1999 xj, 2002 ford e150, 200o buick century. 2011 nissan 1.6 versa and my project car 1984 mercedes 300sd. i always watch your vids to see if any of mine come in. good work.
Good profesor # 1 thankyou dude
Shoe leather express lol!!!
+JD A Not real fast but it works
Hi Eric I believe that all Honda carb (civic ) engines don't hit valves BUT some injection one's do.However I have never seen a injection one bend valve's but there is always a first time for everything.Tam.
+Tam Couch always a first for sure.
ordered a hoodie even tho i live in PA, i support the channel. if only napa sponsored that’d be great
DAMNIT Eric! I wanted you to REPAIR THAT HONDA TIMING BELT ! IVE GOT THE SAME HONDA!!MAN ,YOU WERE THAT CLOSE
Nice video as usual. Good camera work and very informative.
Honda build great engine but don't miss out on basic servicing and change the belt every 60'000 miles folks.
Honda's are due at 105,000 or every 7 years
dang, just his luck it smacked em. I've seen a few 1.7's that survived the broken belt. but hey, the damage is done. good video Eric, thanks for all your videos, and Merry Christmas to you and you and your family. God bless.
That scope camera is a useful tool. I suppose if you removed the plugs and saw the pistons case would have been closed.
Good video once again. Thanks for the stickers and magnet.
Hey Mrs. O! You might want to bookmark this video incase you ever need to diagnose a broken timing belt. :P
thank you for the real life diagnosis video
At 11:16 Eric says 'Alaska, baked'. But in my mind it was 'Baked Alaska'. That must be why I'm overweight. LOL
Cool hoodcam Eric.
Lovely . Mrs O
Hey Eric, Enjoy every vid. The " its all over but the crying" - perfect!!! Just curious on the history of this 1.7 belt, Did owner ever change or is it the original?
Love your videos I learn heaps!
Damn. Was really hoping to get a 2 parter.
