The princess in the pale coloured dress is playing the better game (I don't know if she's a good person or bad because I haven't watched it) because she's being kind, calm and logical - whereas the one in the dark peach is too impulsive and shows open hostility to the ones she should be sweet to (even if she hates them). I think the maid speaking up was just to highlight how impulsive Wang Fei is, showing that she has no control when it comes to matters of investigation, and when it comes to running her own home. Essentially, little maids can run amuck and tell others what to do, but not her.

They do that in all dramas not just palace ones. I actually commend the maids as that takes a lot of courage and those so called superiors often abuse their powers to do bad things and abuse maids, eunuchs and other innocent people and victims. That happens in my family too. My older relatives always abuse their power to hurt me and the younger ones. I can’t tolerate that.
