  • Thailsnd's History: Bangkok. The Victory Monument is one of the citys most famous landmarks, a towering monument celebrating victory in the brief war between France and Thailand in 1940-41. The story of what happened, the back story on their previous conflict in 1893 when the French were attempting to colonise all in their path around South East Asia.
We also look at the design and the sculptor, Corrado Feroci and his work with the Thai Royal Family, his legacy and expertise that influenced a generation of Thai artists.
Plus we take a walk around the neighbourhood, see the sights, the sounds, the people, nightlife, the back streets, alleys, sois and the canals.

It is perhaps not commonly realised unless you get up very close to Victory Monument, but it is not just that the names of the fallen are inscribed on the monument, in fact their ashes are interred inside the monument. There are locked gates at the base of the monument that lead inside.

Brilliant history lesson. I suppose someone less cautious than you and I might reflect upon a subtext to your comments and draw a historical parallel to the Thai government's geopolitical decision-making during the 1940s and the present day. But, I suppose someone may do that on another platform!

VM is one of the pulses of BKK. It's always a bit thrilling to go there. The Skytrain has only enhanced it status in that regard. The elevated walkway shows the city in all its kaleidoscopic glory. I once met a monk up there who gave me a blessing for my travels. I still carry with me the yellow stamped cloth he gave me.

In 2013. there was a Australian comedy show called "Hamish and Andy's Gap Year Asia" . It was broadcast from a bar in Bangkok, Thailand, called 'The Raintree' near Victory Monument. The show consisted of six episodes. The intro was from the bar in each episode, but they filmed in various parts of Thailand.

Great video - I wonder why you don't narrate over it all instead of using subtitles. You have a great spoken voice and delivery. I'd like to see more history from Thailand - this was very interesting (I'm a keen reader of 20th-century SE Asian history). I remember seeing, on another Thai vlogger's channel, some footage of the 'Seven Kings of Siam' statues at Rajabhakti Park. Wonderful statues (designed by Thailand's Fine Arts Department), but the Park itself seems to have been mired in controversy (allegations of corruption).

In brief, the Victory Monument represents the discredited regime at post-WWII onward. I do not have to comment discreetly in this post-war modernization period. I assure modern Thailand accepts the fact that the historic landmark is the discredited regime with the backstory of bravery Thai soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Franco-Thai War. I am Thai, and will outline the history of the landmark in a nutshell.
We need to rewind the history back into the first dispute in the Franco-Siamese War during the reign of King Rama V. Laos and Cambodia were the vassal states of Siam before the outbreak in the Franco-Siamese War in 1893. Both former vassal states pledged the allegiance under the French Protectorate State by choice to liberate themselves from the Siamese rule. The Siamese regiment was deployed to restore order in the Laotian vassal state (The Siamese perspective) and encountered the first blow in the Franco-Siamese War.
The Laotian-French protectorate state was the established diplomacy between the Kingdom of Laos and the French Third Republic. The Siamese deemed the situation as the betrayal and disloyal Laotian subject for their initiated coup d'état to cause the event in "massacred under the French protection by Siamese soldiers".
The colonial French infantry were unable to resist the Siamese invasion into the Laotian-French protectorate state. The French fleet was deployed to cause the Paknam Incident in the maritime warfare at Phra Chulachomklao Fort and continued to pressed onward to launch the French naval gateway along Chao Phraya River to form the blockade in the Bangkok capital.
The Paknam Incident caused the Siamese defeat in the Franco-Siamese War in the maritime warfare to pay the indemity for war reparations. The Siamese victory was still ongoing across the Mekong River against the colonial French soldier in the Laotian-French protectorate state at the time. The compromising term was to order the Siamese retreat in the Laotian vassal state for the French territorial annexation in exchange for the French fleet to depart Chao Phraya River permanently after receiving the indemnity. The Franco-Siamese War was the dispute between the Kingdom of Siam and the French Third Republic.
Fast forward the history into WWII, Siam became Thailand as a nation prior 3 months before the commencement of WWII. The Franco-Thai War was the unsettled dispute over the territorial acquisition in French Indochina between 1940-1941 during the early phase of WWII. It was the retaliation over the unsettled vengence from the previous Franco-Siamese War between 1893-1907. The Franco-Thai War was the dispute between Thailand and Vichy France during the Phibul regime against a German collaborationist state. The French Third Republic became a failed state to the German occupation zone from the event in the Dunkirk Evacuation to the Battle of France. Phillipe Pétain signed the Armistice with Adolf Hitler to pre-empt the failed state of entire France. Therefore, Vichy France became a German collaborationist. Other Overseas Colonial French territories had to adopt the policy of Vichy France, including French Indochina, after the German occupation was successful in the western expansion.
Both Phibul Regime and Vichy France were considered the discredited regime after the close stage for the Allied-Victory in WWII. It was the Free Thai Movement that got Thailand off the hook from the accusation of a war crime.
The Victory Monument was erected to proclaim the indecisive victory for Thailand against the French colonial power. It was the first time for Thailand to be able to extract the territorial loss from the European concession in the history. In hindsight, the mediated-Japanese armistice was the actual reason in the favor of Thailand to force the Vichy French colonial administration into their surrender.
On 8 December 1941, the imminent Japanese invasion of Thailand was decisive and compromised Thailand to sign an armistice and military alliance treaty to become the only Japanese collobarationist state in South East Asia. The Thai Marshal also had to compromise the Japanese in compliance to the Japanese initiation in their mediated-armistice for the Thai victory in the Franco-Thai War.
Before the Allied-Victory in 1944, the Vichy French colonial administration was dissolved into Free France and pressed forward to close in at the Western Front. The Phibul regime was also dissolved into the Free Thai Movement and save Thailand under the protection of the Allied-Coalition. Free France later became the French Fourth Republic after the defeat of the Tripartite Pact in WWII. Charles De Gaulle was the former government-in-exile and became the provisional government of the French Fourth Republic to use his veto power at UN Sanctions against Thailand. He demanded Thailand to return the extracted territories back into French Indochina. Otherwise, Charles De Gaulle would go an extra mile to accuse Thailand of a war crime at UN sanctions for being the former Japanese collaborationist. Thailand acted in compliance to the French Fourth Republic and returned the extracted territory back into French Indochina.
Not long afterwards, the First Indochina War was erupted against the colonial French administration to suffer the forced decolonization in the early Cold War from 1945 to 1954.

I recall reading about the Paknam incident in “Thailand : A short history (Wyatt) which is a great read. He also covers an incident between the Thai navy and Thai Air Force ( a video in itself I think).
A great area that we visit every time we are in Bangkok and my wife drags me around showing me where she used to hang after school back in the day
Also, does anybody have low volume issues with the video ? The last few have been very low in volume ( for me) and then when the ad hits it’s like I’m at a death metal gig.

    Hello Pat,
I appreciate you videos and learn quite a bit about Bangkok before getting a chance to visit again. If someone wants more details about the Battle of Ko Chang, there is a pretty fair Wikipedia page. One last note, the Thaï Navy lost over 300 sailors and about a quarter of its fleet was sunk or badly damaged. The Japanese intervened just two days later to stop the hostilities. My point being that the French naval incursion ended the conflict, it did not start it.

In the past, Thais specialized in combat, punch boxing and Muay Thai were told in French and Japanese. They are very good at the geography of the country. There are still firearms and cannons that are produced by themselves and weapons from East Asia, China, Japan and Europe because Siam has long trade with Europeans and East Asia, China, Taiwan, Japan and Russia before World War I, about 500 years old, is the big brother. of the original ASEAN region without a doubt If there was no World War Laos and Cambodia wouldn't have happened, and I've known this since living in Hua Hin before the epidemic 3 years ago. Thai people are so friendly that you don't even want to cause them problems. Thai people have many face shapes. You will be the whole world there. All races are there. everything is very good Cheaper and better than Thai baht compared to other currencies. I may have thought of it myself or I don't know. But I think you should know that there are nice countries in the world. This is Thailand, my 1st home. From living in Thailand and vacationing in Thailand for 3 years, I'm sure why Japanese people don't want to fight Thai people in World War 2. They are friendly but When it comes to fighting, they fight and are very scary. From former homeless people in north Pacific ✌✌😍😍🍻🍻👍👍

Now it's the bus, through Dusit, to Southern Bus Station. For another buffet, I can recommend the Thai breakfast buffet at Don Muang Amari Hotel footbridge, if it's still there. 280bt maybe

About 10 years ago i was on Koh Chang and apparently there is a monument to the Thai “victory” against the French Navy…. I was looking for it, there was oddly no signage pointing where to go and the road that im guessing takes you to the monument was very steep and washed out by the rain… i had my gf on the back seat of the 🛵 and didn’t want to risk going down let alone trying to get back up, so we turned around. I always kinda regret not being able to find the monument as im a keen military history buff….

What a confusing time. The French were occupied by Nazi Germany in 1941, yet were still out fighting Thailand who were in bed with the German-allied Japanese then. Some allies.

@@BangkokPat thanks for the reply, I'm hopefully moving to Bangkok August of this year to start a Thai language course, the school is in the centre of the city but I'm looking at condos on the outskirts of the city, "much more reasonable rents", so the BTS will be my main form of transport into the city centre. Thanks again and will be watching your videos for insight into Bangkok suburbs.
