I love Emmylou. Pure talent and class. The songwriter here, Townes Van Zandt, is widely considered one of the greatest songwriters ever. He is absolutely worth checking out, too.
The female vocalists of the 60's & 70's are the best that ever stepped in front of a microphone. Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, Emmy Lou and Rita Coolidge were among the very best of the best. Check them all out. The album Trio featuring the harmonies of Ronstadt, Parton & Harris is a Grammy winning classic.
She and ronstadt are beat friends and when they first knew each other back in 70's they each asked the other who favorite singer was and they both said dolly🎉🎉🎉 Trio 1& 2 are phenomenal
Imagine the confidence of this woman that during the 80s and 90s she let her LONG hair gray naturally instead of trying to pursue a look of "youth" and became a silver fox. She is comfortable in her voice AND her appearance! Look her up to see that. It was a radical decision by society's standards at the time! I know that you have listened to Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and now EmmyLou Harris. But you must hear how those three combined their voices in the late 80s to become "The Trio". They took their talents to another level by teaming up. They genuinely enjoy exploring music together AND each other's company. You will not regret listening to all three as The Trio!
Emmylou Harris singing "One of These Days", " Heartbreak Hill", "Timberline", " If I Could Only Win Your Love", "Boulder to Birmingham", " To Daddy"... her singing anything is so worth it! 💗
Sebs, the one that made her first famous was called "Boulder to Birmingham" , her tribute to her partner Gram Parsons, formerly with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. She wrote the song and it's beautiful!!
Ohhh a long time favorite. Emmylou has the voice of an angel and this is one of her best. Go to Boulder to Birmingham, Red Dirt Girl, Wayfaring Stranger, I'll your San Antone Rose. Also, MANY collaborations - a whole tour with Mark Knopfler (Real Live Roadrunning), Wild Montana Skies with John Denver, and OF Course Trio with Dolly and Linda. Emmylou is a National Treasure.
She is considered the Queen of Country. Boulder to Birmingham" is a song written by Emmylou Harris and Bill Danoff which first appeared on Harris's 1975 album Pieces of the Sky. It has served as something of a signature tune for the artist and recounts her feelings of grief in the years following the death of country rock star and mentor Gram Parsons. This song is a definitely worth a listen.
I would not take -Queen of Country" title from Loretta Lynn. Love Emmylou as not even a Southerner but from California and was a Folk artist first... kind of why sebs read Rock in her title too. Still of course... these songs and her voice is fully seen as Country today among the Greats.
I saw Emmylou in March and she still sounds amazing! She doesn't need to sing loudly to create a beautiful sound! Townes Van Zandt wrote another song that Emmylou covered called "If I Needed You" and Emmylou duets with Don Williams on that song. A song that Emmylou wrote herself that's powerful is "Boulder to Birmingham" about Gram Parsons. There's also "C'est La Vie" and "Born to Run" and "Another Lonesome Morning." There is no bad Emmylou song!
I have loved Emmylou Harris for 50+ years. I named my first cat after her. This is Townes Van Zandt's song. You need to check out his music. By the way, this is a song of betrayal. Lefty sells out Pancho. That's where he gets the "bread", i.e. money, to go.
My parents were Emmy Lou groupies! Anytime she was in the New England area they would go see her. Her road manager would see my parents and invite them to see her after the show. She was gracious and very kind to her fans for sure! Thanks
One of my most favorite songs of all time, in any genre. Love her album this song is from. She had the best band and backup singers in the business. This might have been my first introduction to Emmylou, but I've loved her for decades since.
My family and I saw Emmylou at an outdoor concert in Oregon a couple of decades ago. She and her Hot Band rocked it out for two and a half hours in the sizzling sun without slowing down. By the time she'd done her final encore, everybody in the family -- from 15 years old to 86 -- agreed it was the best concert we'd ever seen. She was an amazing entertainer. And every time I hear her voice, I think of the sad saga of Gram Parsons.
The voice of an angel who's fallen from heaven and seen too much on earth to ever go back home. Her country interpretations of rock songs are legendary. You MUST hear both "Boulder to Birmingham" and "Deeper Well". Stunningly beautiful when young; still stunningly beautiful in her 70s. And still recording brilliant music.
I have always loved this song and her version is incredible. It looks like Rodney Crowell is performing with her on this video as well. He is another artist you need to explore. A lot of artists have covered his songs throughout the years. Both are great talents.
Being enamored with long straight hair in my high school years, I was mesmerized when I heard 'Goodbye to Daddy '. When I saw her face on an album,, I was captivated. She still owns my heart out of all the female Country artists l
I first saw and heard of Emmylou when she worked with Gram Parsons. This was in the early 70's. I guess Gram introduced her to the music world. Emmylou just takes it to another level. I am fortunate to have seen her in concert. She went two straight hours singing one song after another and never missed a beat. Pure class.
I heard my first Emmy song on my friend's car cassette player back in the early 1970's. He had just purchased her album Elite Hotel earlier in the day. The song was "Wheels" written by Gram Parsons (the so called father of country rock) and Chris Hillman (bass player of the Byrds). Note that Emmy was good friends with the great Linda Ronstadt. The two singers eventually cut 2 albums with Dolly Parton that were big sellers in the late 1980's. Thanks for reacting to Emmylou; she has done many more songs that you could react to.
The lead guitarist is Albert Lee from England. He's one of the best country guitarists about and still going. He's played with some of the biggest stars.
Emmylou Harris is an example of what is best about music. She could sing the phone book, and it would be magic. Sebs, if you don't listen to her sing "Tulsa Queen" you will have missed a transcendent experience. Other great suggestions: "Two More Bottles of Wine", "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight", "Queen of the Silver Dollar", "Boulder to Birmingham", "Red Dirt Girl", "Guitar Town", "Across the Great Divide"... the list is almost endless.
The song was written by the remarkable Townes van Zandt and Emmylou has been a mainstay in my music playlist since the 1970’s. I saw her as an opening act for Willie Nelson in 1979 and probably for my last time last year at a small venture with her traveling band. She is phenomenal singer songwriter and has an impeccable reputation as a musician and collaborator with other singers.
The first time I heard Emmilou Harris sing was when she sang “Evangeline” with The Band on the “Last Waltz” movie in the mid seventies. She sang like an angel and I liked her immediately.
WTF - Never heard of Emmylou??? You have been living under a rock!!! Seriously - she is good enough to sing with Dolly P & Linda R on 3 albums know as "The Trio" - she has 14 Grammy Awards, three CMA Awards, and four Americana Awards - 25 albums & is in County Hall of Fame - her career spans 40 years!!!!! She is a treasure in both country, folk, pop & even some bluegrass!! This originally a Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard record written by the legendary T VanZant!! Her song "Boulder to Birmingham" is my fav & still makes me cry ~~ as does her "Quarter Moon In a 10 Cent Town" which was my mantra after my divorce & gave me the kind of strength that comes from great music!!!! LOVE HER!!!! Her Goodbye To Daddy is a tearjerker!!
I have so many albums by Emmylou Harris. I always have loved this one. Road to Cimarron is another. The whole album is wonderful. I have 2 albums of her and Mark Knoepfler that stand out in my head, too. It was great to hear this one again. Thank you.
One of the funniest things I ever heard a songwriter say was Townes...'pick it...and it'll never heal'. I saw Emmylou in 1979 in Knoxville, along with the Whites and Ricky Skaggs. I had to be 'coaxed' to go, being a rock fan. One of the best concerts I've ever been to--ever.
Saw Emmylou live many times, lucky me. L.A. in the 70's. Favorite albums: Pieces of the Sky, Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner, Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town. Her album Light of the Stable became our family Christmas album, and is the one my now grown kids still play at Christmastime. First song I fell in love with: Boulder to Birmingham.
Yes, Emmylou can sing like a bird. A favorite of mine you may want to check out is "One of These Days". I see others have mentioned the Trio, with Emmylou, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly. Beautiful harmonies with very different voices that complement each other well. This was also done by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard back in the early 80s. Worth checking out as well.
Hi. You *must* listen to the many collaborations between Emmylou and Mark Knopfler (lead singer and lead guitarist for Dire Straits). One song they sing together is called "If this is Goodbye" and is Mark's tribute based on the last telephone calls to loved ones from the passengers of hijacked flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11th, 2001. Thank you for your reactions!
You are right, She is beautiful I have loved her since the first time I seen her it was 1974 and I was 11 she has so many good covers and she has sang with everybody
The definitive rendition of this one is by Willie and Merle. Townes wrote a poignant story of betrayal, sadness, and regret. The Willie/Merle video portrays the tale.
Check out "You Never Can Tell" and "Tulsa Queen." She did a great song with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton called "The Sweetest Gift." Linda convinced Emmy Lou to come to Los Angeles and Linda helped her get started in her singing career. She also recorded a beautiful song called "Love Hurts" with Gram Parsons who was an early member of the Byrds and a member of The Flying Burrito Brothers.
Emmylou Harris and her Hot Band was unbelievable during the late 70's and 80's. So many great musicians. The male acoustic guitarist is Rodney Crowell who has written some of the best country songs of all time (Please Remember Me, 'Til I Can Gain Control Again, etc.). Try Emmylou's song Boulder to Birmingham.
Boukder TO Birmingham was written about her friend and mentor, Graham Parsons. As an aside, Parson's body was stolen by his friends who then botched his cremation in Joshua Tree Ntl Park.
Great Townes Van Zandt song. For their album Poncho and Lefty Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson heard this cover and just had to record it. Needless to say Townes was thrilled. They even included him in their official music video. Emmylou sang back up vocals on Bob Dylan’s album Desire.
Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt/Dolly Parton performing "The Sweetest Gift" is heartwrenchingly beautiful! Oh my goodness it will seep into your soul. 💗💗💗💗😭💗💗💗💗
As others have said Boulder To Birmingham is a must hear Emmylou song, please give it a listen. Also no-one has ever reacted to Emmylou,my favorite female singer and Waylon,my favorite male artist, doing a duet on Spanish Johnny.A great song that seems to be overlooked by the masses
Do listen to "Love Hurts" with Gram Parsons and Emmylou. They had an amazing musical partnership. I can't think of the first time I heard her or the first song. She's been part of my sound environment since childhood. I bought an Emmylou Harris album at a garage sail that I have never seen listed on her discography. It was white with a blue picture of her. One song was "I'll be your baby tonight." well before her Quarter Moon album. There were a couple songs with boats in the lyrics. It was an amazing album and I lost it in a house fire in 1985 and have never been able to find it again. At the time of the fire, I had every one of her albums. Now I have them all but that one early album that seems to have been forgotten.
Please check out Emmylou Harris’s “Goodbye!!!!” Emmylou Harris has a soft spot forever in my heart, because she was one of my uncle’s favorite artists and because when I was growing up, my sister and I would always sing Emmylou songs together for our dad while he picked guitar. Emmylou Harris and Loretta Lynn were two artists my dad and grandparents loved to hear to us sing. My sister and my uncle are no longer here so every time I hear songs we used to sing together makes me stop and listen and let the memories flood me.
When Ronstadt was just starting out at a club in LA, she heard Emmylou sing there. She said she was doing exactly what I wanted to do so I could either hate her or support her. Linda supported all women in the arts from that time forward. She, Emmylou and Dolly Parton recorded folk music as The Trio years later.
By the way the backup singer is Rodney Crowell of the hot band. He’s a legend of his own right, & he used to be married to Johnny Cash’s daughter Roseann.
I first saw her doing a duet with Bob Dylan of all people. He allowed her to do the instrumental part on her banjo and she blew me away. The media accused them of having an affair but they denied it. Emmylou does do solos but she prefers doing duets because she said that was the way she was raised. Everyone in her family played some instrument. Before records and even the radio, the people in the rural areas had to make their own music. With these old time artists there is no vanity as with the modern trash which is more glitz and glitter than substance. To entertain all you need is a good story to a song, accompaniment and a singer who feels every word. The song is their way of sharing a gift.
I'm 80 and had a crush on Emmylou since she began in the 70's. She sometimes hits a pitch that give's my goosebumps goosebumps. She was beautiful then and still is today in my opinion and she's still performing. In fact I plan to to see her at the Hamilton in DC Dec 15
I was in Sam the Record Man in Montreal on Christmas break in the 70's checking out the Boxing Day sale. Her album "Pieces of the Sky" was playing and while I was not really a country fan, I had to have that album, been a fan ever since.
My first knowledge of Emmy Lou Harris was hearing her on backup vocals to Bob Dylan's Desire album from 1976. I'd recoomend "One more cup of coffee" She had her own thing before that too. She is said to not have been satisfied with the results but she sounds fantastic on those album tracks. You might also want to listen to her duet work with Mark Knopfler (that guy from Dire Straits) showing her later work and also like others have said below, in the two albums made with Dolly Parton and Linda Rondstat, Trio and Trio two. Anything from either of those will take you away.
I’m a life long Emmylou fan. The first song I heard was Boulder to Birmingham. You need to hear “Born to Run” to hear her range of styles__also listen to the Trio albums with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton .
Pancho and Lefty was written by the great songwriter Townes van Zandt. Like the characters in this song, Townes' life ended sadly. Emmy Lou is a prolific songstress.
Her Christmas album is my favorite Christmas album- A Light in the Stable- She also sang with Gram Parsons who was one of the pioneers in the fusion of country and rock- love her- this song was written by Townes Van Zandt- another rabbit hole
Emmylou first recorded with Gram Parsons the person most people credit with starting country rock. He played with the International Submarine Band, the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. He made 2 solo albums featuring Emmylou. My favorite song by them is a cover of "Love Hurts".
You must check out "Trio" (2015) which is composed of Emily Lou, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton. Especially: "After the Gold Rush" written by Neil Young. "High Sierra" is great also. Lots of gems on these two discs. Angelic harmonies.
She joined Bonnie Raitt singing backup for Little Feat on “Dixie Chicken” on the Midnight Special concert series. Also like her cover of Chuck Berry’s “C’est La Vie” and her recent work with Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) “This Is Us” live
first album i got from Emmylou was Quarter moon in a 10 cent town. From there i got everything from her past, and i enjoyd all the music she did since, including a beautiful album with Mark Knopfler......dozend and dozend beautiful songs....some of my favorite songs If this is good bye In my dreams If i need you!!!! This is us Love hurts !!! Two more bottles of wine !!! One of these days !!! To know him is to love him You never can tell !!!! Together agan All the roadrunning Beyonfd my wildestdreams !!! Love and happiness!! Leaving Louisiana in the broad daylight!!! To Daddy !!! I`ll be your San Antone rose Hello stranger Easy from now on !!! Mr. Sandman !!!! Luxury liner and it goes on and on
Emmylou is pure gold, but so is the songwriter Townes Van Zandt. This is one of his most famous songs. It's been covered by many great performers including Bob Dylan. Townes lived a painful and short life and produced many beautiful and moving songs. Check out If I Needed You by Emmlou and Don Williams or Loretta by Lyle Lovett.
I think I have all Emmylou's music. Country Friday Playlist always has her on it. First album was Elite Hotel and song was first on side one titled Amarillo. That entire album is FIRE!!
Emi Lou, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt.. The Trio
I can’t wait for Sebs to listen to Trio!
They were the Trio in the 1970s contributing to each other's albums. They weren't officially a group until the 90s. I perform alot of their music
The Trio “After The Gold Rush”. Phenomenal.
We know you love Linda and Dolly. Now you've entered the mesmerizing vocal world of TRIO.... Emmylou, Dolly & Linda. A must.
I think he did Trio
I love Emmylou. Pure talent and class. The songwriter here, Townes Van Zandt, is widely considered one of the greatest songwriters ever. He is absolutely worth checking out, too.
Emmy Lou, Dolly, and Linda singing After the Goldrush on Letterman is also a must listen
The female vocalists of the 60's & 70's are the best that ever stepped in front of a microphone. Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, Emmy Lou and Rita Coolidge were among the very best of the best. Check them all out. The album Trio featuring the harmonies of Ronstadt, Parton & Harris is a Grammy winning classic.
absolutely💕💕
Trio and Trio II the harmonies are just incredible.
She and ronstadt are beat friends and when they first knew each other back in 70's they each asked the other who favorite singer was and they both said dolly🎉🎉🎉
Trio 1& 2 are phenomenal
Song written by Townes Van Zandt.
I love his version best.
Imagine the confidence of this woman that during the 80s and 90s she let her LONG hair gray naturally instead of trying to pursue a look of "youth" and became a silver fox. Seb....check out "the sweetest gift" parsons, Ronstadt and harris❤
Wayfaring Stranger is my favorite song of hers, and hers is my favorite version of that song. Stunning!
Red Dirt Girl gives me chills no matter how many times I hear it.
Always amazed at the reactors who never heard of her. She's only been killing it for over 50 years. But better late than never.
She is considered the Queen of Country. Boulder to Birmingham" is a song written by Emmylou Harris and Bill Danoff which first appeared on Harris's 1975 album Pieces of the Sky. @@davidw7 Emmylou is from Birmingham Alabama

Willie Nelson and Merle haggard's cover of this is fire 🔥 this performance is also a cover she is not the original artist.
Townes Van Zandt
Loved Merle & Willie’s version
Willie and Merle learned this song from Listening to Emmylou. Emmylou was the one that made this song famous
Rodney Crowell onstage. Performer worth knowing.
💯%
She was beautiful in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s. 00’s, 10’s and still today.
I am delighted to see that you have finally reached the world of Emmy lou Harris, one of the sweetest voices ever... such a great list to explore..
I have loved Emmylou Harris for 50+ years. I named my first cat after her. This is Townes Van Zandt's song. You need to check out his music. By the way, this is a song of betrayal. Lefty sells out Pancho. That's where he gets the "bread", i.e. money, to go.
I named my canoe after her, hehe
Please look into the fantastic music of her dear late friend, Nanci Griffith.
'Gulf Coast Highway' would be a great start Sebs
100 percent agree. Maybe check out Nanci's version of Tecumseh Valley also written by Townes Van Zandt.
One of the legendary greats! Emmy Lou has been a regular at my place and will be as long as I'm here.
She is perfection!!😮😊❤
The great Emmylou - listen to her, Dolly Parton, and Ronstadt on the two Trio albums. Absolutely beautiful.
The legendary Albert Lee on lead guitar.
Saw albert Lee last year play at a recreation of the last waltz at massey hall in Toronto. What a treat that show was
My parents were Emmy Lou groupies!

He was in her band. The "Hot Band". Seb should hear his Bluebird Wine!
Being enamored with long straight hair in my high school years, I was mesmerized when I heard 'Goodbye to Daddy '. When I saw her face on an album,, I was captivated. She still owns my heart out of all the female Country artists l
Emmylou Harris is the Goddess of Country Music..❤❤❤ Boulder To Birmingham and Before Believing are amazing by her..❤❤❤
I first saw and heard of Emmylou when she worked with Gram Parsons.
Thank you for featuring Emmy Lou❣️ She was one of my favorites in the 70’s.
The lead guitarist is Albert Lee from England. He's one of the best country guitarists about and still going. He's played with some of the biggest stars.
He's also a heck of a Bluesman.
I love the way you really appreciate the music, thank you!
Emmylou Harris is an example of what is best about music. She could sing the phone book, and it would be magic. Emmylou, and this song.. pure gold! Love her!
I fell in love with Emmylou back in 73....still do
As someone already mentioned, TRIO with Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou and Dolly. Also her duet with Gram Parsons "Love Hurts"
The first time I heard Emmilou Harris sing was when she sang “Evangeline” with The Band on the “Last Waltz” movie in the mid seventies. She sang like an angel and I liked her immediately.
I'm glad you have discovered Emmylou ... she is the best!!
Also this song written by Townes Van Zant. One of the greatest song writers of all time.
Goodbye to Daddy! Will bring a tear to your eyes
Love Emmylou Harris. Most beautiful voice.

I'm 65 and I've had a life long crush on Emmy Lou and she's just as stunning today as she was back then.
I have so many albums by Emmylou Harris. I always have loved this one. Road to Cimarron is another. The whole album is wonderful.

Was set to go see her but a winter storm stepped in. A big regret having never seen her.
My very first concert in 1974 on my college campus was Emmy Lou Harris….tickets most likely around $4.00! Loved her ever since.

Amen to that.
Also, I Can’t Help it if I’m Still in Love With You
You should check out "Boulder to Birmingham" which she wrote in tribute to Gram Parsons.
yes💕
I went from being in love with Emmylou until I heard Linda Ronstadt, and then back to Emmylou, amazing female singers
She is a favorite of mine , Saw her at the garden state art centrr outdoors.. it was a beautiful show..
Emmylou Harris is a beauty in every way, still to this day.
She performs in "The Band" "The Last Waltz". Amazing performances by so many artists!
I first saw her doing a duet with Bob Dylan of all people. He allowed her to do the instrumental
part on her banjo and she blew me away.
The media accused them of having an affair but they denied it. Emmylou does do solos but
she prefers doing duets because she said that was the way she was raised. Everyone in her
family played some instrument. Before records and even the radio, the people in the rural
areas had to make their own music.
With these old time artists there is no vanity as with the modern trash which is more glitz
and glitter than substance. To entertain all you need is a good story to a song, accompaniment
and a singer who feels every word.
Song written by the great singer song writer Towns Van Zant….recorded by multiple artists. Taken to #1 by Willie and Hagard in the 80’s 👍
One could argue that this is Texas’ greatest song. Beauty, loss, longing, stunningly simple.
Listen to Tulsa Queen. She's number 1 on my list since 1976 when I heard her voice.
I finally got to hear her live at Willie Nelson’s 90th party at the Hollywood Bowl
I first got turned onto Emmylou by hearing this song on FM back in 1975. Have been a big fan every since.
Emmylou is the best. Been a fan for about forty years.
I first heard her singing backup on a song, and I stopped in my tracks and said, “Who IS that backup singer.”
Emmy Lou Harris
Red Dirt Girl is another classic Emmy Lou song
Emmylou first recorded with Gram Parsons the person most people credit with starting country rock. He played with the International Submarine Band, the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. He made 2 solo albums featuring Emmylou. My favorite song by them is a cover of "Love Hurts".
You must check out "Trio" (2015) which is composed of Emily Lou, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton. Especially: "After the Gold Rush" written by Neil Young. "High Sierra" is great also. Lots of gems on these two discs. Angelic harmonies.
Emmylou Harris. This is a deep rabbit hole. She is soooooooo talented. You should see her perform this song with Willie Nelson.
From there i got everything from her past, and i enjoyd all the music she did since, including a beautiful album with Mark Knopfler......dozend and dozend beautiful songs....some of my favorite songs

Teared up there, din'cha. S'ok. I've been listening to Emmylou for 50 years and she still does that to me. 😁
Have to listen to “Two More Bottles of Wine”. Absolutely fantastic.
I think I have all Emmylou's music. Country Friday Playlist always has her on it. First album was Elite Hotel and song was first on side one titled Amarillo. That entire album is FIRE!!
She is Great. Emma Lou Harris had some nice music. Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard sang this son with a video as well.
