  • Just going to say this wasn't the best Christmas time news I've ever gotten, but it is good to finally know what the heck is going on and have somewhat of a path forward; more on that in a couple of weeks I guess.
I know this is a common saying, but getting old(er) sucks lol! There, I finally said it; accepting that is kind of a right of passage no ????
I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Years with Family and friends!! Thank you for all the help and support, it means more than I think you'll ever know :-)!!
Be safe, have fun and I'll see ya in the New Year!!!!

Andy, I work specifically in this field. The report is describing a fairly common rotator cuff tear. There are 4 tendons comprising the rotator cuff, with the Supraspinatus being the one at the top of the shoulder. As it is a full thickness tear, it must be re-attached to your arm at the shoulder. This is done with suture-anchors. These are attached permanently into your arm and feed suture from the anchor, through the cuff, and then back to the anchor. The surgeon will then tighten the suture until the tendon pulls back to where it should be. The whole thing is locked down for good. Over time, the Supraspinatus tendon will heal itself back into your arm at which point you're done. You will most likely undergo a 2 or 3 anchor repair, along with something called an acromioplasty and a bursectomy. The acromioplasty regains the space in part of the joint allowing for full ROM later on. The bursectomy is just a part of "cleaning thing up." These are done everyday and nothing to worry about. However physical therapy is vital to your recovery. The tendons have very little blood flow, therefore healing is slower than that of vascular tissue. That means you can do significant damage if you fail to follow the PT regime. The surgery does smart a bit, but you'll have medication for that.
You're going to be fine. I've been in the OR for hundreds of these surgeries and the doctors who perform them are trained heavily and are incredibly skilled at this.
    You're gonna be ok.

Retired RN with ortho surgical experience. Here is what I know for sure: 1. Shoulders are more complicated than hips and knees. 2. Have surgery in an accredited teaching hospital as the residents and nurses and physical therapists are more up to date in latest tech and treatment options. 3. Make sure you have second opinions, especially from those in teaching hospitals. 4. Make sure your surgeon is an expert on the latest ( within standard of care) procedures. (Example: your mechanic may have 40 years experience on cars, but very little on newer engine systems. ) Good luck....

Really, knees you say? Ask any runner. Basketball pro, etc. After all, Andy is not throwing pro baseball, baseballs at 100 mph for a living. That’s shoulders. And half our bones are in our feet. So it’s very simple, he needs to get different opinions, including traveling to an authority, like a particular a university, or hospital like we have in Manhattan. There are many opinions and only other experts, and you are not an expert unless you have massive experience. This is no boat. There is many opinions since there are surgeons who may have SEEN the exact thing he has. So he needs to spend the time and money to find the right doctor. It’s more important to keep looking for the right experienced surgeon and it may take a dozen or more. That’s why universities and certain hospitals he can get as many opinions as it takes, for him to make his own decision. I actually worked with someone who while putting on a raincoat, screamed out in pain,I though it was shot it was outdoors and we were working in a certain neighborhood, he bent over and I grabbed him and pulled him under the side of our truck. We are utility workers, as I soon learned he dislocated his shoulder and put it back in place. I immediately notified our organization where it was discovered he concealed a condition that compromised his and my safety working with him. He wanted me to shut up, not a chance, I had 35 yrs on the job, he two. He was back to a desk job, never seen him again. As far as I’m concerned, I’ll never listen to any one doctor, besides surgeons make a living doing surgery. No rotor rooter on my enlarged prostrate 10 yrs now, just pee very often, no knee surgery and it was after diet and shoe trial and error, as a runner very very fast in 5k foot races, pain free. I solved it myself it too a long time. I even pulled all three tendons on my right leg, biking. For sure, andy moving his arm in pain in a no no. Never ever continue motion in pain, especially repetitive movements even in sleeping positions. Another buddy at work, needed shoulder surgery didn’t even know it. Was working out at the gym everyday, must have did something. I had a double hernia operation, both sides, the first one was F ed by general surgeon. Failed in one year, found the right surgeon, that one and the other side fixed for good, ten yrs ago. And I’m a hard bicyclist and runner way older than Andy. Even my sister went to him, rare for her to have one. She had multiple opinions. Andy, good luck.

Andy, my wife is a retired ICU RN and I am a retired Respiratory Therapist. The above is good advice, follow it. Just because a hospital or Dr's office is convenient, doesn't make it the best choice...for sure! Godspeed and I am rooting for your quick recovery.

Totally agree with above note from ortho RN. Get surgeon that is in academic institution and is known as a “shoulder surgeon”. Shoulder are more complicated than knees and hips which are more common. I am a MD, internal medicine, who refers shoulders for surgery.

I just had my second shoulder “cleanup” surgery-first RH and now LH. I got 3 opinions before getting the first one, and they have both turned out well. Get several opinions, prepare to not use it after surgery(not pretend, lol), and do exactly as prescribed-mine have healed up well. God bless and successful surgery to you!

From experience on a Bicep tendon tear, do NOT wait too long. The longer you wait (which has probably already been WAY too long), the harder the recovery is. I was very fortunate, I blew out my bicep tendon, went to urgent care, was able to get into an MRI THAT DAY (we have lots in our area), and was into an orthopedic surgeon 2 days later for review. I had surgery within 8 days of it happening. I've got a nice long scar on my arm from the surgery, but I recovered SO FAST. Literally 6 weeks from surgery I had full range of motion and 6 months later I had full strength. I was around 43 when I had that surgery. There was a younger person that had the same surgery as I did, but they had waited WEEKS if not MONTHS from the injury to the surgery. SIX MONTHS I was told it took him to just get his range of motion back, and he was in his late 20's. My doctor said "Waiting too long is what caused the issues".
I urge you to take care of this now, you've probably already waited too long. I know it isn't easy, but if you don't fix this now you could be FAR WORSE off by holding off. Good luck, Merry Christmas!

I had a massive tear of my supraspinatus and partial tear of my bicep. They did a bicep tendinosis and debridement as well. Get this done as soon as you can....the more you wait the muscle atrophies and they may not be able to save it! In had this done in Feb and I was cleared to resume sports in October. I've had one shoulder surgery, dealing with the AC joint. There may be another on the horizon; I'm just still determining. With the shoulder, it's essential to understand what, if any, restrictions you will have after. With some, you will be limited to a maximum of 10 pounds for the rest of your life. Others will heal, and you'll get back at least 80% with PT and strengthening. Wishing you the best and good luck!

Matt definitely needed a shout out! He seems to know his job and in my humble opinion made a good call in shutting down the physical therapy. Many would have kept going without considering the possibility of doing more harm. Have enjoyed watching your videos and have learned a lot from them, but as you said, the priority is getting that shoulder fixed. Praying that your surgeon is as good at his job as Matt is at his!
Too bad the insurance company took so long to get things going as it seems to have possibly made the situation worse, but that's what happens when money is more important than the patient.

Hi Andy. Long time listener, first time caller. Lol. I’ve been a boat tech for 20 years and just getting into fiberglass work on my own trimaran project. I just had to have shoulder surgery on the 29th of December. We had the same thing going on with the addition of my AC Joint was also damaged and a bone spur cutting into my rotator cuff. The first week was a bit rough, but 90% self induced, just keep your sling on, and keep the back strap on so you can’t pull your arm outwards, like a chicken wing. That is painful. Just keep it as still as you can. It’s weird. We are becoming the weird old guys that warned us “you’ll pay for that one day”. 🤣🤣. Wishing you the best, and a speedy recovery.

I am a few years older than you. I have had shoulder surgery, as well as my wife and several family members. I am NOT a doctor, but it sounds like your shoulder is about a 5/10 bad. Mine was a 3, and my brother's a 7.
Shoulder surgery sucks, recovery is long, but it is totally worth it. I can currently throw a ball, swing a hammer or ax.... as good as new. Same with all my family who got scoped. Find a good surgeon and do your PT. Oh, and one of the guys I met in rehab was a 10/10 (cancer in humerus)... bone removal, implants, donor bone, etc. He told me about the surgeries they did and my mind was blown. His rehab was longer.... but he's doing great too.
I can't emphasize this enough: rehab is slow and painful. 3 months post surgery you will think "this is worse than before, my surgeon is a quack, I am wrecked forever. " It will be better than it is now in about 6 months, and you will be pitching for the Tigers in a year, kicking yourself for ever doubting your medical team. Ok, maybe you won't be a MLB pitcher, but you get the idea.
    Good luck.
One more thing... try to stay as active with your arm & shoulder as you can (without pain) prior to surgery. The more your shoulder muscles atrophy now, the longer your rehab will be. Your future self will thank you for dealing with this now.

The supraspinatus and subscapularis tendons can be reconnected. The bursa will heal on its own. Typically a downturned acromium gets shaved off because it will re-tear the supraspinatus tendon if it's not shaved.
The Labrum is a touchy subject. Typically superior labral tears occur when shoulder mechanics get messed up. The labrum is also where the long head of the bicep attaches. Some surgeons want to move the bicep tendon anchor point to a different location but it's a questionable decision and it causes a bicep deformity and there isn't enough data to say it is the best move. Some labral tears can be sown down into place and they will heal.
My advice is to have the surgeon repair the tendons and labrum and smooth off the acromium to open the subacromial space then leave the shoulder alone to heal. Rehab should include resistance band exercise, light massage or Graston massage, and possibly PRP or stem cell to injections to improve healing.
    Best of luck

Good luck with your upcoming surgery. Do everything the Dr. tells you, but more importantly , pick a GOOD physical therapist and do what they say. Get ready and put your big boy skivys on.

I can sympathize! Crashed hard while ski racing, really ripped my right shoulder up. Surgeon called the damage "impressive", more like the result of a car accident. Anyway, proper shoulder repair entails a long recovery and many, many PT sessions, but stick with the program, it will get better! My recovery took over 18 months, but my shoulder is 75% of what it was before, and I am pleased with that. Had to fight with the insurance company several times to get them to authorize PT (for treatment lasting over a year).
All of which has impacted my boat addiction...I've restored a Martin 242 and now have a Laser 28. Got a weakness for lightweight and fast older sailboats, I guess.
Hang in there, don't give up on treatment or PT, your shoulder will improve! It may never be what it was, but it can be usable enough for you to resume most of what you used to do. Be good with that.

Some years back I tore a tendon in my shoulder loose in my upper arm to shoulder. The tendon was secured with a screw to get it reattached. The bursa was damaged so they cut off the damaged part and the cushion will regrow to make a proper cushion. The doctor extended my surgery by several hours and removed bone spurs and such from my shoulder's bones. The first week in recovery didn't allow me to pick up even a pencil with that arm. My physical therapist started movement gently and it progressed to ensure I had full movement of the shoulder. When he hurt my shoulder pretty bad, I'd bow my back up off the table and talk about his family and his degree from the Marque De Sad school of physical therapy. :) I got to go back to work in about a month. Doc told me that it was easy to have the muscle mass to tear tendons loose as one ages. He suggested that I try to stay below 40 pounds by 50 was OK. I had an uncle who had the same type of surgery and he was allowed to follow printed PT exercises and came out same as I did. It takes about a year to get you shoulder back to feeling 100% like when it was healthy and 20 years old. Good luck, get a good doctor and have them clean up everything while they're in there.

Not a doctor, but I've had this problem too, but I was able to see a surgeon and MRI/X-Ray, can't remember which, the night my injury occurred. That said surgery was the way to go and the sooner the better. But for the surgery, teaching hospitals are ok, but go find the best surgeon, but ask him to do the surgery not an assistant. Do it now, your recovery will suck, especially sleep, but after a week or two, your arm will still hurt but you will be able to do what you're doing now - not using your arm. Recover sooner as opposed to later.

I screwed up my shoulder late in the summer. I did the orthopedic surgeon, physical therapy, MRI route. Just like you, PT resulted in no improvement. The MRI results were indecisive. My shoulder has pain and limited range of motion but the doctors have no idea what's wrong. I wish the best for you my friend.

I had similar rotator cuff tear damage from spilling a dirt bike in the woods going pretty fast (front end washed out on me and I ate it). The extent of my supraspinatus and subscapularis tears sound similar to yours and my bicep tendon was also dislocated out of the groove. The subscapularis tear is the one that is very tricky (according to doctors that I talked with when going through this it was described as more of a specialty), the supraspinatus is the one commonly repaired from most rotator cuff injuries. My shoulder surgery was the most extensive one my doctor has performed and he is a sports injury ortho in Orlando FL area who has done lots of rotator cuff repairs. I spent a lot of time finding the right competent doctor (and I suggest you do too) because as another doctor told me there is really only one shot getting the shoulder fixed right so I took that input very seriously. The recovery isn't great, it is lengthy and you'll have to wear a brace on your arm for 6ish weeks and you will have to sleep in a recliner since you always have to wear the brace particularly when you sleep so just be prepared for that if you have surgery. You will need rehab and takes a long time to get strength back but you will get it back and you will also have most of your range of motion back that you don't have now. Be patient and I suggest you follow the doctors orders during the recovery phase, there is also a decent percentage of patients whose surgeries aren't successful (I think I read somewhere in the neighborhood of 40%) so be aware of that also. Time is of the essence, the length of time from the injury to the surgery is also factor related to the success of the outcome so if surgery is necessary get it done as quickly as you possibly can. In my case my 3/13/22 injury date, 4/20/22 surgery.

g.day Andy, i hope you had a good Christmas and a happy new year and got to spend time with the ones you love. i am saddened to hear about your shoulder and i agree that you should be taking it easy. rotator cuff repairs are no fun at all and you can expect to be laid up for a few months and will have to take about 6 months off. i have had 5 rotator cuff repairs on both shoulders and both biceps reattached so i can feel your pain. stretching the retracted ligament will redefine your meaning of pain but as long as you do exactly what the doctor and physio say you can expect a good recovery. i know it may be inconvenient to have it done asap but it will shorten your recovery time. Rotator cuff repair is classed as major surgery and can sting a bit so look after yourself because i need your expert advice to get my boat looking as good as a csy 44 can. my shoulder problems were what prompted me to buy a boat and start to enjoy what i have worked so hard for even though i have sold everything. thankyou for sharing your knowledge and expertise and about all things boat related and if our paths should ever cross i hope i can buy you a beer. Cheers mate

I have rotator cuff tear at the moment. Went in to a clinic they said I have moderate arthritis in the ac joint and gave me a referral to an orthopedic surgeon unfortunately couldn't get me in for over a month then he told me I likely have a rotor cuff and to come back in a couple of months if it hasn't got any better then he'll order an mri and go from there. The whole insurance/health care situation is a disaster right now for whatever reason.
    Hope you get it fixed

I just had a Supra re constructed and my bicep tendon reattached. I was out of work for 4 months, I returned to work in August and I am still feeling the “stretch”, luckily it isn’t painful anymore. 6 weeks after the surgery I was doing PT and homework PT which was three different stretches 1 minute each every 20 minutes I was awake. It was crazy hard to stay on schedule but I did it. Years ago I had a minor tear repaired on my other shoulder and during therapy it started to freeze up which resulted in another surgery. I can say I’m not 100% but I’m not in pain like I was before the surgery. Good luck and don’t slack on homework therapy it is the most important.

I had my right rotator cuff rebuilt 10 years ago, a couple of things.
1- listen to your Dr about recovery, I got busy way to early, pretty shure I popped one of the teathers, my shoulder is better but not as good as it should be.
2- I'm no stranger to pain, I've raced Motocross for 50 years. 😮 The Dr had me on an interscalene block for pain and had me start staggered dosees of Oct an hydrocodone before the block wore off, when that happened it was like I had no pain meds. It was a new level of pain for me.
3- Don't wait any longer, your just doing more harm, get it done so you can get on with your life.

    My immediate thoughts...
    What was the cause?
Do you sleep on the affected side?
What is the mattress like also pillow height etc?
How do you do certain tasks, even how you hold your mobile phone.
What are your levels of Vitamin D and K2, Magnesium, Zinc, B complex etc?
Remember to take fat soluble vitamins with fat not only water!
    A starting point..
A tin of sardines or other oily fish each day.
    Half an avocado a day.
Quit seed derived products.. so called veg oil and seed flour etc.
Also sugar.. and ease off carbs and starches etc.
Do look at Keto style diet and Intermittent Fasting to clear rubbish out.
    Hope this helps 😻

I tore three of the four tendons in my rotator cuff and partially tore my biceps tendon. My surgery was 4 months after I injured it. If you wait to long for surgery the tendons will retract and they will not be able to pull them back in place and secure them. One of my tendons could not be pulled back. My 2 hour surgery took 4 hours. Rehab was 60 visits to physical therapy. Therapists said the shoulder injury was the hardest to rehab. Also, said my shoulder was the worst they had seen. I can now reach up over my head. But, I am weak on that shoulder. On a side note, I had very little pain from the time I hurt it though all of the therapy. Therapists said that was not normal. Must have destroyed the nerves when I injured the shoulder. Now frozen shoulder will give you alot of pain.

Get it done ASAP. The longer you wait, the more damage can be done and the longer the recovery. It's a case of pay now, or pay more later. If you wait too long, it may actually become unrepairable. It only takes half a second to permanently damage it , like catching a falling kid, forgetting for a millisecond and lifting something you shouldn't the wrong way, getting into an accident that throws you around a bit, or even slipping and falling on snow or ice and BOOM - you're done for. Get it done ASAP.

Andy, find good drs,get lots of information on the types of surgeries.Wishing you well, but please don’t wait to long,as the tendons do get shorter and your surgery will be harder to stretch it back over to reattach it..Use shoulder ice recirculating pumps on the surgery areas, this will help control the pain and work on your healings..Also get a moist heat pad from a good source out of battle ground wisc.these pads are killer and will help, the tissue ares to stay loose, don’t stop pt ,this the only way you’ll get most of your motion back, and do work on the scares ,your scare tissues will also cause you pain and loose of movement.I’ve had what there telling you,and pushed surgery out to long and the tendons do get tighter, and makes your surgeries and recovery time longer..The ice pumps and shoulder flow bags are for lef5 and right shoulders, there made by berg medical equipment, buy the unit, cheap insurance for later..I’ve been in construction for 30 years and tore both shoulders. At the same time, and it’s painful, but with the ice and heart you’ll need less pain meds, and your recovery will be less time, but your movements will probably never be like it was,and your correct on learning new ways to accomplish your work, but time of rest is most important..also set up a recliner to rest and sleep in after surgeries, you can’t have pressure on the surgeries areas, that will take about 2 week or more, but the chair will help on the pumps work on your shoulder, and use the heat pad, that will also keep your tendons and muscles from tighten..Good luck and stay with the pt,it’s going to be slow,30 years of heavy use doesn’t get better fast,I’m in my 5 year after, and still not normal, but my wife says it’s my new normal,so you will adjust..Good surgeons and drs are your best friends now…Also when you have time,8m looking at rebuilding a rv Frt cap that’s done in a mold Useing sprayed strand Matt fibers,it’s polyester resin, have big 4-6 crack that splits from stress around the windshield corner going up,it’s opened up,but I can lower jacks to close it.I know the prep is going to be my best friend,I’ve opened up the backside first, looking to use total boat 2-1 expoxy with csm with the powder base ,and topped with 1708 layered on top..The area is about 12 tall -90 inches long to reinforce the crappy spray job,any information would be gently appreciated on prep/ repairs..I want to do inside first for a thick base ,then go out to the outer crack at the windshield corners and cut out gel coat, hopefully tring not to pull the Frt glass as it’s 4x8 big..Wishing you a quick recovery, but get all the surgeries info as possible..Thanks for your time,I’m south of Seattle on a island…Wishing you and your family a great holiday and new year…

I had each shoulder done to repair acromium-related tears in 1995 and 2003. My acromiums were both hooked too - causing the tears - so your condition sounds similar to mine. However, yours has apparently progressed, as there is no way to improve hooked acromia through therapy. It's like fixing a hole in your boat by blowing air through it to keep water out. In my cases, there was no physical therapy required prior to me getting MRIs. I went to the docs, they scheduled the MRIs, and then the surgery was performed. They trimmed my acromia and snipped the tears, and physical therapy thereafter, both shoulders have held up to my farming life. Flinging 100s of bales per day is a great testimonial. Sadly, health care has devolved into insurance care, and I'm disappointed that the system is making you go through an entirely inane path. I'm sure that you will now be approved for surgery, and despite all the failures of our current health care system, surgery still remains the acme of care. Push hard for it. Merry Christmas!

Would think as long as you refrain from using that arm, perhaps even put it in a sling you shouldn’t cause it to retract anymore. I would look into taking MSM add glucosamine we use this with horses to help heal their tendons. I would advise against getting a nerve block if it all possible my dad had shoulder surgery a couple years ago and had a nerve block done and it ended up messing with his hand on that shoulder where he wasn’t able to use it adequately.

I'm just a couple years older than you (61) 😊, and I can tell you from experience with torn ligaments, torn muscle's, torn tendon, 7 knee surgeries, 1 total knee replacement, 1 total hip replacement, 1 shoulder replacement 2 years ago and the other shoulder this coming February that putting these things off is terrible. I put my knee off for 35 years until I basically couldn't walk without a cane and I still always had to be careful of it giving out and falling. I walked "weird" for so long that now even after 6 years with my new knee I still walk a little funny even though the knee works great.
The best advise I can give you is get it repaired ASAP and from literally 100's of hours of PT, my experience is do EVERYTHING they tell you to do, especially the at home exercises but don't over do it because your feeling good or it's not hurting. I severely over exercised my knee after replacement because it didn't hurt at that moment, I put my recovery back by weeks if not months by over doing it too early.
Be prepared that it is going to take a long time for your shoulder to recover whether they repair or replace, you have some serious soft tissue damage that is going to take time to heal. Of my 3 joint replacements, so far my shoulder was by far the longest recovery time and I didn't have the soft tissue issues that you have, I just had bone on bone issues.
One other thing I would add if you end up with a shoulder replacement, if possible find out from the surgeon what joint they are planning on using and do your research on the Internet, some joints seem to be better than others, and I know in the hip world some appear to be down right bad, with premature breaking and longevity issues.
FYI your phases with the physical therapist after surgery are going to be, liking them, hoping they don't show up to work that day, hating them, wanting to punch them in the face when they say "just one more rep" and finally thanking them.
Merry Christmas 🎄 and best of luck with your shoulder.

Supraspinatus is the most common tendon to tear. With retraction = older tear, worse healing about 56% successful. They will also grind the actinium to make more room for the repaired tendon. 5-6 months healing if you get it fixed. Lots of people live w the tear strengthening the surrounding muscles w PT. You do not need a total shoulder replacement.

Maybe I wasn’t listening carefully enough, and there is no confusion here, but a retraction of a tendon is not the same as a full separation of the shoulder. (The latter concerns the ligaments around the AC joint, collar bone and shoulder blade. You may well have both things going on in your shoulder, but I missed the separation stuff when you were reading your MRI notes.) A retraction is a shortening of the tendon which then pulls on the adjoining muscles - which can cause other issues such as fatty atrophy. If that is the case, surgical options could depend on the condition of the tendon (thickness and elasticity). Check with your surgeon about the options - there are a number of these, and they will be able to guide you as to the most suitable and their likely outcomes. Above and beyond possible surgery, I expect that pain treatment, rest, physio, and time are approaches most often used. (I expect you should be thinking in terms of years of recovery, rather than months.) On the other hand, there is a lot going on with your shoulder and, as you probably already know, you are best off waiting to hear what your practitioner has to say - if they are not a shoulder surgeon, you should be referred to one to further discuss your treatment options. It may be worth getting a second opinion from another shoulder surgeon too.

Experience speaking. I first heard from my Brother Inlaw how much his shoulder surgery hurt, I thought yea right. Now I've had 2 shoulder surgeries; one a rotator cuff repair and the other shaving the bone spur away. Done at different times. My Brother inlaw was 100% right. I can tell you that anytime any doctor carves, drills, screws into your bone(s), it is gonna hurt really bad for 2 to 3 days while the initial trauma calms down. After that normal pain meds will be sufficient. Whether you'll be told or not, your shoulder is connected to your head, back, chest and maybe your big toes. Because after surgery you cannot move anything without moving your shoulder. Ouch My advice is to find a recliner chair that is comfortable enough to sleep in because your going to need it. I think I slept in mine for 3 months each time. ICE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND Be sure you know what kind of ice machine/pump you will be using and whether the shoulder wrap will also offer compression (from an air bladder that can be inflated). The machine I had used a basic ice chest with ice water pumped through a tube into a bladder worn by a patient. After surgery the joint will be irritated, traumatized and hot. Nice part of the ice machine is that it isn't cold enough to pose any danger but will cool the joint and penetrate deeply. As I remember, repair of the tendons are accomplished by doctor using some type of knitting procedure. My surgeon seemed proud of his work and said I wouldn't be able to tear it again. Be sure to just ask the doc. I thought of the healing process like epoxy, hot in the beginning to a gel state and gradually harder until cured or healed. FYI my experiences were between ages 65 to 70 ish. Good luck follow the instructions provided during Personal Torture, they are really there to help. Cheers

Tears of ligaments are never good, dear friend. I had "Reverse Shoulder replacement". A guy with me in PT had surgery to fix the tears. I bounced back much faster. But, if you have a reaction or rejection of the joint in a replacement, you are screwed to an extent. If you fix the tears, you can always do replacement later. Then again, my reverse shoulder is now my best shoulder. PT is huge in shoulder post-op. I spent months waiting for surgery, got to the point where sleeping was impossible. Took me 3 months to get to basic normal movements. At 6 months, the shoulder felt absolutely normal. Surgery, either way, is a crap shoot. Depends on Doc, your genes, your healing ability, your reactions, even if you get MERSA or VERSA (which is not uncommon these days). Anyway, you seem like a smart guy. Don't overdo it after surgery. But, I figure surgery of some sort is inevitable at this point...

That doesn't sound fun. However, having has a total knee replacement last February 28th, I can say that the surgery itself will not be a big deal for you. You will sleep through it. The recovery is what will hurt, particularly the physical therapy. From what it sounds like, I would guess that your surgeon will want to schedule the surgery sooner rather than later. If you opt to wait, I would not be surprised to hear that the surgeon advises you to wear a sling until surgery to minimize shoulder movement. I hope it goes well. If they do a total shoulder replacement they will put in some metal bits with HDPE spacers to replace cartilage etc. The recovery is largely waiting for the muscles and tendons to recover from the trauma of the surgery. Good luck.
