My problem with Christian Eigner’s syle of drumming is that he’s trying to channel John Bonham & Keith Moon. That’s great if you’re playing Zeppelin or the Who, not so great for Depeche.

Alan had a drier sound to his kit (less resonance). The attack is sharper and stick definition on his cymbals is WAY clearer. Perfect example is on RUSH on the devotional tour video. Alan is very calculated and in the pocket more. A very "less is more" type of percussionist, which I love.

Yes! Alan's drum playing is very calculated. Not only in the actual hits, but the pauses in his playing. It takes a genius to know when to hold back & when to go.

That is a really good description of the drumming and the drum sound. I was at the concert in Copenhagen when Alan came out drumming, and it was incredible. I have not been able to describe the fantastic sound (even when getting into percussion playing later) but you describe it well. That, coupled with Vaughns description of the «metronomy» (is that a word?) of his playing, I think that makes the whole experience of Alan drumming so impressive. (Besides him being a genious...)

Both are terrific drummers but of course AW brought far more to the table. Alan is just more ‘human’ in the electronic arts. His sense of style, rhythm and production acclimates him as the superior musician. No offense to Christian but AW is the bloody man. 🙂

I love Alan's style in 'I feel you' live from the devotional tour, this song itself is a explosion of sound, and the relentless rythm of Alan makes the song resonate the way it should, without filling in the dead spaces with extra rolls or anything. The song actually builds up somewhat, it has a crescendo, which you miss with Christian, where for my taste something needs to happen or emphasized, constantly which is a shame. Anyway it is all about a matter of taste. For me I like Depeche Mode best with its restrained dark undertones, there is enough noise outthere, and I prefer to enjoy the ....

This comparison is absurd. Alan had a special flame and commitment even if he is not s drummer ( by the true he practiced many instruments and he is gifted to be very good in all of them) , it is impossible to reach Charlie ‘s intensity in drum interpretation.

Thank you for mentioning the tribute band sound. Alan Wilder's drumming was very "martial" in its execution and sound. Christian just goes full animal on the drums and he ruins the sound. Alan's drumming was understated, but it was there. I remember seeing Alan playing the drums for the first time on Clean live and lost my fucking mind. Christian doesn't have the same (this is going to sound oxymoronic) flowing rigidity that Alan has. Christian plays like a session musician, desperate for fans to accept him and we don't. We all sit there and stare bitterly up at that riser and try to mentally Magick Alan Wilder back into that spot. No, I will always prefer the sound of Alan's drumming to Christian's and it's not because I'm a fangirl. I am, but whatever. Alan's command of the drums became another layer of sound and it was 100 percent Alan Wilder carving out those sounds. Watching him play drums was one of my favourite parts of the show, and I would intentionally make sure I was seated nearest to Alan so I could just revel in the glory. Christian is a great drummer. He would be a great 14th drummer for Slipknot, but he is not suited to Depeche Mode's sound. Especially on songs like Stripped. I judge every tour by the new arrangements and everything since SOFAD has sucked. I can't bear to see them live anymore. I don't know that I ever will again. Alan's drumming style was his own and it fit so beautifully, just another layer of sound for my autistic brain to pick apart and dissect a million times over. I still find myself holding my breath during In Your Room and counting out the time signatures. It's all Alan and nobody can replace him. He didn't have to be a great drummer either, he just had to be Alan Wilder being Alan Wilder, a fucking genius.

I honestly would just rather they didn't have acoustic drums live because that just makes them less special.
As many other people have noted one thing that Depeche Mode always did and they said it was a pain in the ass sometimes wish that they would try to use a different keyboard sound on every song do try to use different drum sounds on every song and really take advantage of the fact that they weren't using an acoustic drum said so the drums could sound different all the time and never be the same you know they can really just be something new every time.
Acoustic drums can work in conjunction with electronic programmed drums-I'm not opposed to that necessarily, but it depends on the song.
I mean the obvious example is New Order who've been using electronic drum machines and drum sets and their music since I don't know 1981 or 1982?
If they were doing an electronic based song sometimes Stephen Morris would play acoustic drums on that song either on their own or in conjunction with electronic Beats...
But a song like Blue Monday or Perfect Kiss he switches over to synthesizer.
Blue Monday replacing the electronic drums with a drummer would just sound so stupid. The drum sounds themselves are a huge part of what makes the song great.
Everything counts or Fly on the Windscreen share that. The drums are a huge part of the song ( which is why in the past when they played weird remix versions of them live they sounded like just total crap because they replaced the drum beat with some generic like house beat and it was awful.
Aside from that because I've already gone on enough...
the 2018 tour any of the old songs were kind of ruined because it just sounded like Christian kept playing the famous drum fill from Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight. and every time he did it, it drowned out everything else.
it's like dude you're the one person on stage we don't really care about. stop showing off and grandstanding.

Thanks for another great video:) The first thing i noticed while watching Alan playing drums on Devotional Tour, is that he's not hunched over, like many other drummers, probably because he's never been a professional drummer (as you said). And he's not raping the drum kit - he plays drums as if it was some classical instrument, he's focused and elegant. I'm not a musician, just a regular fan, but but i love when he stars to play ''I feel you'' and you can hear how he accentuates sounds, he knows when to hit harder. It's very powerful and suits this song so much. I love it. (i watched several versions with Eigner and sorry I didn't feel anything).

Love this video and topic. I'm a live-session drummer in LA and I play with a lot of artists who use sequenced/click track music. DM (Alan's drumming) has been a huge influence on me. His style of drumming was a simple deep pocket style that leaned into the rhythm in an organic fashion. He kept it sexy. Christian, is an incredible drummer but even the best drummers sometime forget that "less is more". Let the song breathe. Check out what Massive Attack are doing with their drummers (two, one electronic and one acoustic drummer). I would love to see more of that. Drummers should actually appreciate the "less is more style" and not forget to Enjoy The Silence.

What I loved were the MIDI pads they were using for that concert for the masses tour..
They had drum pads attached to the side of the keyboards at least as far back as the Black Celebration tours but they weren't as dramatic.

Well I’m 25 and I listen to DM since age 11. To be honest, I started to like them because of the song Precious which I heard on TV and as you know this is the song of their era After AW leaving Depeche mode.
Only in 2016 was the first time I heard their previous sound - my gosh, that was something. I can truly say that I fell in love in Alan's personality, charisma, voice - everything. The band at that time sounded alive, rich multifaceted sound which I don’t hear now. Yeah, they still pretty good but it isn’t comparable to that time when Alan was with the band. And yeah, seeing their live shows I understand what you mean by calling them "Tribute group"

  • @DeanWThomas

I’m a drummer. When I’m not drumming I’m an electronic musician that programs drums so I know both side. Now to start off, I’m from Pittsburgh PA in the United States so I do not get to see Depeche Mode Live. I have to rely on UA-cam and DVD releases. There is no doubt that Depeche Mode is way better with Alan. They are still great but the music has lost its edge for sure. The drums for the most part on the albums, still sounds electronic to me however I agree with you and live, it just doesn’t fit the band. Personally I think Martin should put the guitar down as well. They would be better served with vocal and 4 synths even without Alan. They should also start using the original samples again too.
    Love your channel!

If you are young and vital your presence maybe compensate the lack of powerful drum beat but older, the drumless band looks and sounds cheap.

When you said that the live performances sound like a tribute band, I could not agree more. I have been to all the live shows since SOFAD and to me that was the last best live show. Since then it is almost like Dave has turned into fat Elvis. When Elvis would play live in his later years he basically sang two lines and let the audience fill in the rest and it sucked. When Dave sings Enjoy the Silence live now he basically sings half of the song and it sounds like he is just mailing it in. You are spot on in your observation.

Yeah they kept doing that on the 2018 tour when we saw them. They get around to "enjoy the silence" and the chorus kicks in and Dave just points the mic at the audience and yells SINNNGGG IIIIIT!!
And so we're paying $180 a piece to listen to Little Miss Susie tone-deaf next to us sing the song instead of Dave, because he's bored with it??
I get that I understand that but maybe they need to figure something else out because that's not a good solution.
So many people were just sitting down on their cell phones waiting for an old song to play and then they kind of get up and then they sometimes they just sit down again because the performance was so lackluster.
Just remembering how good they were in 1990 and 1993 when it was 25 bucks makes it really hard to shell out 250 per seat now.

Sorry, but I need to share. I've never been a DM fun and I used to think that there were only 3 men in the band. However, a couple of months ago I absolutely accidentally found an "In your room" video (Zephyr Mix) and then I watched a live album version. Dark lyrics, unforgetable Dave's voice and a mesmerizing drummer I couldn't get my eyes off him.
I think it's not a question of professionalism or being a drummer, it's just about Alan's magical ability to make people feel alive and...to love! Alan is an introvert but there were so many emotions reflected on his face that seemed so imperturbable at the first sight on that live video (1993). I've got interested in this person and I've just fallen in love with him and his music, and his presence in the DM's history. I was stunned when I realized that he had been a keyboarder and a core of the band and Alan had made Enjoy the Silence we love so much. To sum up, he's just a great musician and an architector of people's souls))))

The most noticeable to me is after the keyboard solo in In Your Room when that repeated drum roll kicks in with that tom tom hit. I think it's the 3rd verse. It emphasises the desperation of the song at that point. It's almost a bit ominous or sinister, along with those synth lines and the guitar at the same time. I look forward to that moment every time I listen to that song! There's so much going on in this song. In the hands of someone else this could have been a mess. But it's done so well. It's not too much to listen to. It all works. In fact, I describe this song as peak DM.
I also love the drumming in the middle section of Rush. Those distorted cymbals. There's something quite rock n roll about it, in how loose it sounds, but it still sounds good today.
In I Feel You it's the cymbals crashing, particularly towards the end of the song. And the kick drum all throughout. When I first saw the Devotional DVD and they wheeled out that drum kit, and he started playing I Feel You, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. It was a big moment. And he looked so cool behind that kit.
I have no idea what kind of drums he used, or how he tuned them, or any of that, but there was something special about it. I heard he only learned how to play the drums 6 months before recording SOFAD, or something like that? You might know more.
As far as Christian goes, yeah he is a good drummer, but yes mostly unsuited for many of their songs. Less is more! But then they have all moved away from the original versions of the songs on SOFAD, which irritates me. I always go back to the Devotional tour and everything sounded great. Even that different bass line for World In My Eyes sounded amazing - better than the studio version IMHO. I think Alan really perfected the art of the synth bass line on SOFAD.
Anyhow, I can talk about this for hours. But I'll stop here as this is long enough. Thanks again for a great video!

goth hunty I think that bass was a combination of Live bass and programmed synths . Wilder often used technology to edit human performance to make something exceptional. The result is something which sounds awesome but is not actually possible to replicate by a human. For this reason I don’t Think a live bass player would have made that sound any better during the live performance. Thanks for the comment and you interest in the channel !! V ;-)

What drew me to DM is the various puzzle pieces of sound, which really hit me with the Black Celebration album. There are so many little bits that aren’t immediately apparent. As a songwriter and guitarist, this is the same reason I love late-period Roxy Music. My own songs will often have several little melodic guitar phrases that come and go or overlap. All very simple, but each providing texture.
This is why I’m happy to have found your channel. I’m just starting to get into two-finger keyboarding lol, and love watching you deconstruct the songs. I also enjoy this introduction to various synths and their strengths. Perhaps an overview of gear would be worth doing? Please keep the videos coming, my friend!

If you haven't already - and I'm sure you will have - check out a BBC documentary called Synth Britania. It's a juicy 90 minute historical account of all the punk era synth bands that emerged in the UK in the mid 1970s and how they went on to inspire a generation of synth based pop music in the 1980s. Some great bands like Cabaret Voltaire, the early incarnation of the Human League and The Normal feature heavily. Along with, of course, Numan, OMD and Depeche Mode. Right up your street!

The drumming topic is very controversial, I personally enjoy the live drumming a lot, because it shows that DM has the courage to change their sound with time. Best example: Walking in my shoes. The original version is a legend, but I was blown away from Christian Eigners drumming during the last live shows... when he uses the double bass drum towards the end of the song.....just wow!!!! Finally, after almost a year after I watch the video I’m posting my comment. As a drummer and DM fan I gotta say that what you’ve said of Alan Christian drumming is not far from what I though about it. First of all live drums in DM’s music are not nessesary. SOFAD was the different story as it had that guitar rock vibe where live drums naturally fit in place. That was the moment when Alan stepped in as drummer for live shows. Alan is not professional drummer and obviously far less skilled compared to Christian. But his drum beats, drum sound, and his appearance on stage I find the most interesting. Christian plays lots of busy grooves and fills, but his drums sound choked, polished, and muted so much I can hardly hear half of the stuff he plays. And what I still manage to hear it sounds dead to me, as it doesn’t create that groovy feel which Alan managed to pull off in every song he played on drums. I love rough and natural sound of Alan’s drums. Hope I could express my thoughts clear. English is not my 1st language so apologies for my grammar) Peace.

Depeche mode started to incorporate live drums in their SOFAD album. When you hear the intro of I Feel You you'll be air drumming coz it really sounds good great. You'll be yelling yourself why they didn't do it from the beginning of their recordings. I like Alan's way f drumming coz Christian way of drumming seems like he is in a hurry to finish the song. Wilder is more of an ambient style of drumming which is a lot better with DMs style.

    • @VaughnGeorge
      @VaughnGeorge  5 років тому +1

      Darren Cotta good Question!!
I think it’s both !! Even if you use electronic triggers , the feel of a live drummer does not fit the “electronic “ songs to me . Anything from SOFD album works with live drums but I think most of their earlier stuff is better with the original “drum machine/programmed feel.”

    • @dennismoran1299

Well his drums are ran through a processor and/or software like Abelton or Pro Tools, but i think they don't choose the right patches for some of the songs. Like stated earlier on some songs the snare sounds flat. The song " I Feel You " comes to mind. The snare sounds to deep, almost more like a Tom. Way to deep sounding. Since Depeche used to sample metallic items in the 80's and early 90's they need to add those types of sounds along with the live drumming. Real drums are great no doubt, but most of Depeche's songs don't need or can actaully sound weaker with the real unprocessed drum.

To be honest there was a reason why Electronic bands back in the 80’s didn’t incorporate acoustic drums, because with electronic drums you can program the beats and program the tempos.
Also they match the feel of the genre, I feel acoustic drums sound and look out of place. I feel Eigner would be more suited to a rock band where his style would be more suited.
If you listen to songs like Stripped the programed drums add more of a emotional feel to that song. Also add more of a edge to it, where the acoustic drums during a live setting sound flat.

I'm 53 now, far too old for fangirling, but since Alan left DM (and I absolutely understand his reasons) he took the genius and magic with him. Ultra and the memento mori abum were the only albums, I liked after Alan left the band. Liked but not loved. I joyned the gig last year from DM in Berlin and well, it was nice but not the same fire. I can't describe it better. Martin still writes good songs and Dave is brilliant, the other ones really did their best, but it didn"t touched me the same way, as it does when Mr. Wilder directed the sound...
And to answer one of your questions: I got two daughters (18 and 13) now and without telling them anything about the history of DM, I gave them my CD's and asked them to listen and comment the songs. And I took them with me to join the concert, 'cause they are so passioned in music, too.
Both said, the best songs have been produced from "Black Celebration" to "Songs of faith and devotion". Believe it or not - I didn't influenced them at all. I was really surprised.
All the best for you! 😘

Today I saw your channel, I subscribed, fully agree with you, DM today sounds like the best tribute band would like to sound. There are songs that were not made for the drummer and when you see them live you feel it, you know something it's not 100% right.
I hope that if DM meets to work on their last album, the producer needs to be Alan Wilder, call it "fan service", I think at the end we will all win and everybody will close the circle that began far away in 1981.

I appreciate that you break down some of the musical words and techniques for people like me that are just listeners. About the Christian v Alan issue, I too am biased because I’m from the old school 80’s DM. I also feel that the drum flourishes Christian does aren’t necessary for the breaks in the song. I think that type of drumming is for a band that needs to add something to a song, but Martin lays out every song perfectly.

Hey man, I really enjoy your videos about DM. I am 19 rn and I started listening to DM a lot since I was 14. My father is a big fan and i knew DM songs since i was young and yeah I think my opinion on DM albums and songs is probably a little different as your older generation opinion. I think Violator, Music for the masses and MOFAD and Ultra are my favorite albums but I also really like albums like Playing the Angel and I think there are lot of good songs on the new albums like Wrong or Heaven. Also I am kinda glad that the life versions of their songs are different from the CD versions and I can kinda understand why all of the older fans are crying about Alan Wilder and how would DM be if he was still in the band, but on the other hand I don't really know if they would be better, maybe just because I haven't been in the world at that time and all of that stuff. I have seen DM life and I think it was like the best moment of my life I really enjoyed it. I also kinda like the energetic life drums and the way how they are performing the songs now. Well I could talk about this all day, if you have any questions about how the youngsters see DM or anything just ask me. I really hesitated of writing this here as people might consider this comment negative, but for what's worth I'd like to share what's my thought around this.
If you follow a bit the history of Depeche Mode, they sounds electronic, no question about it, even to these days when they use more traditional instruments they sound electronic on their records, however, if you listen carefully and if you have some more open mind, you can listen tons of music styles (more traditional ones), this clearly shows the inclination for traditional music of all genres.
Let's not forget how Martin got his inspiration to play guitar as a child and what kind of music they were listening before becoming DM, electronic music was a good way to start playing music without all the burden of traditional instruments and learning complex music but they used to listen more traditional music.... I can name a few but I think at this point would be redundant.
In fact if you take a look at many documentaries, they always said that the reason why they never played traditional instruments, it was because they used to live in tinny houses and synths were an easy way to play without being heard, Clark's mother used to complain even about the clicking of the keyboard, can you imagine the trouble to add a drum kit being the limitation privacy and noise?
But all these stories aside, my point is, it seems that coincidentally Alan left and they started playing less electronic music, and even when Alan played drums it sounded super electronic to my taste, but it was also by the time Dave had his issues, those issues came in part because he wanted to be a rocker (he recognized this in several interviews), buy who says that Martin didn't want to be a rocker?? Who says that Andy doesn't want to be a rocker? And who said that they are not enjoying more now than before playing this way live?
In fact watch the last interview to Martin at the Moogfest and you'll see when he's asked, he said he enjoys more playing guitar than keyboards.
With all that said, I feel after Alan left and Dave had his issues, they decided to have fun, enjoy life and enjoy themselves playing what they like, and when you go to the roots, what they liked, it was not 100% typical electronic music.
The other thing that I'd like to point out is that, part of changing the way they make and play music is evolution and change, you can't expect that an almost 60 year old musician play the same way and same music style as when they were 20 or 30 years old.
I really respect and enjoy watching to these videos, but my only advice is, try to be more open musically speaking and try to not to fall into the typical stereotyped DM fan Alan vs. not Alan thing, there is more than what you see on the surface, it's just a question of digging a bit deeper.

@ German: Well said. I might add, if you think people go overboard on the live/programmed drums issue, imagine what I’ve read as a fan of Yes for the last 40+ years...especially since there have been occasions where TWO bands simultaneously called themselves Yes LOL

Agreed. Numan's drumming as can be heard on the live album (savage - live at Brixton) reminds me a lot of the drumming on 'songs of faith and devotion live' which to me is great.
Love those hollow, crisp electronic soundings drums. "Here in the black" springs to mind :). Funny thing is, one of the first things that hit me during my initial listen to Brixton live was infact the drumming, how good it sounded.
Another cool subject could be dM versus Numan, comparing production work/sounds and song writing etc etc.
For me personally my interest in dM has declined since Wilder left. Numan filled this musical void perfectly so to speak as he seems a lot more inspired and is using a far more interesting sound palette than the one dM is currently using.

Just saw DM in Denver couple days ago and they were absolutely amazing. I do agree Christian is a fabulous drummer. However, he loves to remind the audience that a drummer is playing on every song. Seemed to have a mini solo in every track. Totally fine but it takes away from the simplicity of classic DM.

That's a very good observation about the types of drummers Alan and Christian are. 100% Alan is more keep the beat nothing fancy and that's great it DOES serve the sound and the songs very well. It's very much like other artist that aren't drummers as a 1st instrument. Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz etc.. I personally don't play for example the way Stevie did, I try to emulate it, but will never get that "sound" or "feel" he had. But again I like both styles of the drumming and show.. I think it's like we all know DM have always pushed the envelope and used new sounds and styles. Keep up the good work Vaughn.. love your videos :)

Another amazing video! I agree with pretty much every point you made in this video, especially with how Numan's kit sounds compared to Mode's kit. I really wish they would take a page out of his book!
I also agreed with your point about DM sounding sort of like a cover band nowadays; I hate how they arranged some of their older songs on the Global Spirit tour. This may be blasphemy, but I actually prefer to see a tribute band (shout-out to Strangelove) as opposed to the actual DM; they're much cheaper, and they sound more like DM than the actual DM does. :/

Like you, I grew up with Depeche Mode. They are the "Soundtrack to my life." When I think of their music in it's entirety, I Place the albums in chapters. Chapter 1 is Speak and Spell and A Broken Frame. I can remember hearing Just Can't Get Enough the first time, on WLIR in 1982. I was hooked for life! Chapter 2 is Construction Time Again and Some Great Reward. My personal e-mail comes from Everything Counts. Alan Wilder joins the band. They really begin to use the craziest sounds to sample. Some Great Reward is an incredible album which sees heavy rotation in my playlists. Chapter 3 Black Celebration. The first DM tattoo I would get. This album was huge among my friends. I was and am so incredibly jealous of the winners of WDRE's (once WLIR) contest that would become the 101 video. Chapter 4 Music For The Masses, Violator and Songs Of Faith And Devotion. DM at the zenith of their career. Three incredible albums in six years. These three albums, are, in my opinion the best trilogy any band has to offer. These three are my young adult years, my getting to know myself years. When I think of my fondest memories they are entwined with the music from these three albums so tightly as to be inseparable. Sadly, This is where Alan leaves, Dave dies, the band nearly implodes only to produce... Chapter 5 Ultra and Exciter. In 1994 I moved to Colorado, all of the remaining albums evoke memories associated with my time here. DM proved to me that they were not dead, not by a mile. Dave had seemed to cheat death, his vocals as warm as ever. Freelove is a song which will always make me think of my wife. Chapter 6 The Ben Hillier albums. There were some moments interspersed among those three albums. Some songs I love, some I don't. Overall I'm not too fond of this period. I was definitely longing for a time long ago, when we were younger. Chapter 7 Spirit. Depeche Modes mid life crisis album? A classic album worthy of Springsteen, Fogarty, Dillon, Seeger, Baez, Reid, Guthrie? A mishmash hodgepodge of songs thrown at the wall to see which would stick? The best album since Violator? Two years later and I'm still confused by this album, but I love it!
