- What’s happening in this Rudy movie clip?
With Notre Dame leading 17-3, Devine (Chelcie Ross) sends all the seniors into the game except Rudy (Sean Astin from The Lord of The Rings), despite Steele's and the assistant coaches’ urging. Fans are aware of Rudy’s goal from a story in the student newspaper, and a "Rudy!" chant begins in the stadium. Hearing this, the Notre Dame offensive team, led by tailback Jamie O'Hara (Vince Vaughn from The Lost World: Jurassic Park and The Cell), overrules Devine's call for victory formation and scores a quick touchdown, providing defensive player Rudy a chance to get in the game and be entered onto the Fighting Irish roster. Devine finally lets Rudy play on the Notre Dame kickoff to Georgia Tech.

What’s the Rudy movie about?
A young man learns to let nothing stop him from realizing his ambitions in this drama, based on a true story. Rudy (Sean Astin from The Lord of The Rings) dreams of attending Notre Dame University, and playing on the Fighting Irish football team. However, Rudy's dream doesn't seem very practical; his father works in a steel mill and can ill afford to send his son to Notre Dame, while Rudy's grades are not especially impressive, and standing a shade over five feet tall and weighing a little over 100 pounds, Rudy is hardly built for the gridiron. However, with the help of Father Cavanaugh (Robert Prosky), Rudy is admitted to Holy Cross, and in his junior year manages to squeak into Notre Dame as a transfer student. Rudy works as an assistant to the football stadium's groundskeeper to pay his tuition and appears at tryouts for the football team. Rudy is made a member of the practice team but Coach Ara Parseghian (Jason Miller) is impressed with Rudy's devotion and determination, and pledges that he'll allow him to dress for one game before he graduates, so his name can be recorded as an official member of the team. However, the arrival of a new coach and a tough season that allows for few unnecessary players may put a stop to Rudy's dreams within sight of the finish line.

I remember back in 2009 we had just made the playoffs in high school and were on the road to play the number 1 seeded team. It was a 2 hour drive and coach put this movie on the bus to inspire us. That night in the locker room he ended the speech before the game with "be Rudy tonight". We lost the game 56-6
Did you play your best?
That's all the coach can ask for.
lol, you make me laugh hard..
I think that was the worst thing a coach could do. Watching a feel-good story about a guy, living in a fantasy world. While it makes for a great movie, truth was... Rudi's fate (playing time) depended on a couple of guys who leaned on their coach.
Realistically, he had virtually NO chance of starting, much less playing. All he cared about was putting that uniform on, and making an appearance. All he wanted was... to dress, one game, just so he could say he was part of the team. That's what I would call... a bucket-list "dreamer". And dreamers tend to get knocked on their asses.
Imagine had they NOT liked him. There would be NO story. That's how close he came to the reality of it. Pure pipe dream.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Gotta feeling that the team, who scored 56 points, didn't watch Rudy before the game.
Absolutely brilliant really made me laugh nice one
You had me in the first half, not gonna lie.
I never have watched this movie with a dry eye... Hell, I can't get through a six minute clip without some pollen getting my eyes...fantastic movie.
When they start chanting, yeah, that’s it, allergies kick in…
I know what ya mean, sir….and I’m not even a Notre Dame fan….great movie
The chant always gets me too.
Yea the pollen....me too
I watched this with my pops before he passed, we both had water in our eyes. He was old school, raised me to be old school.
"That was for you"
The music, Rudy's reaction, everything just perfect 👌🏾
Gives me goosebumps. Amazing. I had a Rudy moment in High school basketball. I was a bench warmer and my friend Mark Gray told me he was going to get the crowd cheering for me to get in. By the one minute mark he had the entire crowd cheering for me. Coach finally told me to take off my sweats and just from that the crowd was on their feet. Went I went in the entire crowd gave me a standing ovation. Never forget it. Everyone deserves a moment like that in their life. Thank you Mark Gray!!
@richard Miller, I salute you and I know that you had the heart for it. ❤❤❤
@@redmoneylady2213 Thank you!!
Brings tears to my eyes every time! Wish this included the team carrying him off the field.
50 years old, and still makes me shed a tear. Great movie ❤
YOU WUSS!! I am cutting onions and I had a grain of sand in my eye at the same time, so I HAVE AN EXCUSE!!! :)

If you watch the real play online, he assisted in the tackle, but otherwise, it's as shown really. He is in there severaal plays.
Lump in my throat, tears in my eyes…u gotta have a heart of stone to not feel the emotion of this! What a story, what a film, what a dreamer named Rudy who had a heart bigger than that entire stadium and who never gave up! Love this!
You do know he started a company with the sole intention of defrauding investors, right? He actually had to do some prison time for it lol. I'll bet that gave him a lump in his throat lol.
If I ever get dirt or something stuck in my eye, I watch this scene. Works every time.
I agree with you 100%! If it's Windy outside my eyes might get a little teary to. Lol. Us dude's are like that. Hahaha
This scene still gets me!!!
Me too!
Every time.
I haven’t watched the movie in so long, and I just geared up…again! They don’t make movies like this anymore. Everything is so fake now! We have really become shallow as a people.
Same brotha, and I watch this movie EVERY Thanksgiving LOL.
Everytime!
I have seen this maybe a dozen times and I still have tears in my damn eyes. If you don't feel this then you aren't alive period
"He's so little!"
Yeah Jon he's a hobbit
LOLOLOL, Don't you leave him Sam, and I don't intend to Mr. Frodo.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that in 1966, Al Bundy scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High School Panthers in the 1966 city championship game versus Andrew Johnson High School, including the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds against his old nemesis, "Spare Tire" Dixon.
Fun Fact - Ed O'Neill who played Al Bundy on MWC played college football at Ohio and Youngstown and was drafted by the Steelers in 1969 😊
Funny thing....Al Bundy...Ed O’Neill actually played for Youngstown Ursuline High and scored 4tds in the 1964 City All Star game. That’s where the storyline came from.
@@jim2lane He also sacked Bradshaw in training camp that year
Although some will say his knee was down.
i thought you would mention the illegal crane kick.
I know that the coach gave his blessing, but it's still a shame that the movie did Dan Devine dirty like this. In reality, he was the one who insisted on Rudy suiting up and playing in the final game.
I heard the same. Not that surprising because Dan was never in it for himself... but I agree, they should have figured out 'extra' drama without using Dan.
It’s Hollyweird man what can we do? At least we know the coach and a lot of people was on his side.
True but what really happened doesn't make for a good movie moment.
Sean Astin performed well in this movie! His sense of wonder & awe...the best!!! ♡
I cry just about every time I watch this part.
If only athletes had half the heart that Rudy has.
The Rudy music gets me pumped up every game I have to play when I was in HS. The tune has a meaningful effect to me because I tells me to never give up in school, football, my job, and other personal matters. When I turn that music on, it gets me to work nonstop till the finish line.
One of the greatest football stories and love of the game movies of all times. Love this movie !
I just came to watch this knowing id get emotional some.
Soon as he runs on the field and his family goes crazy my eyes start to sweat in joy.
Jerry Goldsmiths score makes this movie incredible!
Lordy!! I cry at this scene all the time.
PLAY HIM!!!! 🍀🍀🍀🍀 This movie makes you fall in love with his dream.
The real Rudy was actually in the stands during the crowd scenes. He is wearing a funny cap, leather fur lined jacket and holding a rolled up program. Sitting right behind Ned Beatty.

Holy crap! I've seen this movie several times and never knew that! It sure as hell IS the real Rudy. Wow.
It seems like they could have given him a bigger role in this movie
since there were a lot of small parts.
As a grown man ,I still cry when watching this movie.
Shows you that the underdog, the little man, can make a huge difference. Great movie.
This movie is almost 30 years old...let that sink in my 90's high school peeps. I was a frosh. Varsity hockey though. :-)
I did have an inch on Rudy though... :)
the 40 and over club here. i was 12 when this came out. and i lived about 30 minutes from SB.
Damn. I’m at work watching this in the parking lot crying like when I saw it the first time.
This scene and the one where his teammates were turning in their jerseys to open up a spot for him are the best in the movie.
Too bad it’s fiction
@@leonphelps1901 yeah, movie drama only. It was Dan Devine's idea to dress and ultimately play Rudy in the closing moments of that game
Coach Devine said that if that really happened, he would've cut everyone on that dress list.
@@Sal_Sal27 the movie made Devine look like an asshole
I can't get enough of this movie
I was actually at this game when they were filming. ND was playing Boston College and it was COLD! My dad and I ducked in a building to get warm before the game and we ran into the GT and ND "players" standing in a hallway. We couldn't figure out what was happening until halftime. That's when the public address informed us of the filming and informed the crowd to cheer wildly during the "plays" and when Sean Astin ran onto the field and when he "sacked" the QB! The crowd went crazy like it was real! Great memories! My dad is gone now but that memory will always be there for me! ND went on to throttle both GT AND Boston College that day!
The Rudy chant that’s proof dreams can come true
Definitely a tear jerker movie but worth it.
I had a head injury (car accident) just after high school graduation and I could not play college football. I never gave up the dream, however, and when I was healthy in my early 30s, I played semi-pro football with a bunch of former Division I players for a team in the North American Football League. I drew inspiration from this movie. I just wanted to play. God, I love football.
This movie just popped in my head and now I'm sitting in my work truck about to walk into a customer's house, wiping tears from eyes lol.
This is why I love Notre Dame
Got to talk to rudy on the phone.. watched this movie 10000000 times as a kid… it was hype movie for anything sports related
I was a fifth quarter warrior. I rode the bench my entire freshman year and I never played organized football again. I know exactly how it feels to be Rudy.
Same here. Coach made me a tight end, for scout team and such, but the issue was that we didn’t use a tight end in our offense hardly ever. Literally made me a position that didn’t exist for our team lol
Great music meets the perfect place in a decent movie!
I swear on everything every time I see this scene I get chills and almost dropped tears this is by far the best football movie ever more realistic than any football movie I've ever seen they actually put you on campus and in the moment especially seeing when he's watching football with his kids and he said nobody watches nothing but Notre Dame on that TV
Still one of the best movies of all time.
Wow! This was great stuff. And the Norte Dance football hero teamed up with that little person to destroy the one ring
As soon as Rudy sprints on the field for the kickoff I get a lump in my throat and eyes tear. Never fails.
At work, whenever we're getting bodied... we start to chant "Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!" to ourselves to lift up the mood or motivate us not to be miserable.
Chills and tears EVERY time
The greatest sports film of all time.
What I find amazing is that guys who I know aren't Notre Dame fans, even a few who hate Notre Dame, _love this movie_ and tear up a little at the end. That's because, as important as the university is to the story, _Rudy_ isn't really about Notre Dame or its football team.
No, at it's heart, it's a small story.
It's a story about a man with a dream. This man follows his dream with an indomitable determination, taking every gut-punch that life throws at him and getting up again.
Everyone can relate to that story because we've all taken the same gut-punches but maybe we didn't always get up.
That's why it's so incredibly satisfying to see this man finally win out in the end. That is why you don't have to love Notre Dame to love this movie.
I'm a 41 year old man and I am not ashamed to admit that I get teary eyed everytime I see the team carry Rudy off the field. Even if I never attended the university of Notre Dame, I think it would be more than enough for me to walk through the campus halls, take in a lecture, eat in the student union, read one of the books in the library, and top it all off with a winning Notre Dame football game. When it comes to academia, Notre Dame really sets the bar high alongside Princeton, Harvard, and Georgetown.
Don't be a p**** I'm 51 feel the same way
My brother went to school there from 1990-1994. I was only 10-14 at that time, but my parents and I went to a game every year while he was attending school and after he graduated, the four of us went to a game every year for probably another ten years after that. It is a beautiful campus. Even though I’d seen it so many times, seeing the Golden Dome and the Grotto never got old. So many other traditions too. The band entering the stadium. All the different dorms selling burgers and hotdogs on the quad. Funny you mention reading one of the books in the library. We always used to go to the bathroom there before the game. It was like our little secret because nobody was ever in it vs the overcrowded bathrooms at the stadium. I would have liked to go there, but I never even bothered to apply. My brother was a lot smarter than I was. I actually ended up going to school called St. John’s in Minnesota. The campus is similar in a lot of ways, but it’s much smaller and it has a winning football team too, but it’s D3. In fact, it’s past coach, John Gagliardi has the most wins in all of college football.
I didn’t watch the movie all the way until now, but I’ve seen the ending many times but never realized that their score was high and that they were going to win anyway and it wasn’t him that won the game. That makes it even better, I cried waterfalls during this and the music makes it so powerful
The story, the scene, the buildup, the music…it all works so perfectly. But the one part that gets me every time is when his friend D-Bo (John Favreau) yells “Who’s the Wild Man NOW!?!”
First time I heard it, I cried like a baby.
Honestly, I think Rudy getting IN to Notre Dame was the far greater/tougher accomplishment. As much as their football team gets most all the attention they're really pretigous academically too and Rudy had to overcome dyslekia (who back then even heard of it?) as well as his not so great HS grades and only managed to get in on the final try.
Like that janior guy says, the bottom line, most important thing is that you're going to get a degree from one of the best universities in the country (who just so happens to have the finest college football team in the land though I reckon Bear Bryant and Alabama might have something to say about that!).
O yeah, people don't realize it but ND is a top notch college...selective as hell, on par with the ivy leagues
Agreed, 100%. And let's not forget that his own father wasn't exactly the nurturing type. Hell... is own brothers knocked his dreams, and grabbed his fiance. And, he watched his best friend die.
That was one bumpy road.
He’s so little!
Cracks me up every time 😂
Gives me chills.
This is the only football game I will watch ❤

I love this real life story. It is one of my favorite movies. I don't own many movies but this one "Rudy" I have it. I could watch it over and over and over. It will never get old. It is something that we can all identify with, The dream, the things that stand in our way of achieving that dream, That one thing that gives us that reality check and push in the right direction, failures along the way, receiving help from various places and people ( Yes, even help from God), the hard work that it is going to take to achieve that dream and lastly the fulfilment of that dream. I am a man, a soldier, a war vet, but it still waters my eye for a good reason. Well Done Rudy and so many others that fulfill their dream against all odds. This movie and others like it, help to bring encouragement to a challenging life filled with opposition.
It’s the perfect sports movie, there is nothing else like it.

THE ULTIMATE IN RESPECT
The best movie of all time.
No of all time
The greatest scene from the greatest sports movie ever made.
Best movie scene ever
RIP Ned Beatty.
In the real game, the Coach tried to send Rudy in. Rudy refused because it was on offense and he was a defensive player. Once they got back on defense, Rudy went in and the rest is history.
That is the one inaccuracy I noticed about the movie vs what the actual players said.
Trust me…the whole movie was BS!
There were a lot of other inaccuracies. The worst one was when they portrayed the coach (Parseghian I believe) as not wanting to dress Rudy for that last game and the players goaded him into it. In reality dressing Rudy for that game was the coach’s idea.
The coach also said that if the players putting their jerseys on his desk would've really happened, he would've cut every one of them.
@@Sal_Sal27 In real life they would've had no reason to.

Greatest sports movie of all time. I cry like a fucking baby every time.
Play for play, Rudy has the best stat line of any football player in the business.
For the underdog in all of us.
Fun Fact: On this team with Rudy were Sophomore Tight End Ken MacAfee, and Freshmen QB Joe Montana and (at the time) Linebacker Bob Golic. MacAfee and Montana would play together for the 49ers, but MacAfee would quit after they asked him to move to Guard. He went to dental school.
Golic played for the Browns and the Raiders, and became an actor, starring in Saved By The Bell the College Years.
Steve Raible, a Georgia Tech receiver who started in this game, want on to play for the Seattle Seahawks expansion team opposite a guy named Steve Largent. Raible's football career was something less than Largent's but he did go on to call Seahawk games for decades on radio and TV as well as becoming the prime time newscaster for KIRO TV, the major Seattle news station, until his recent retirement.
Ross Browner was on that team as well.
I don't know that playing a supporting character meant starring.
@@Folam Bob Golic was a main cast member and was basically the Mr Belding of The College Years. I'd say that qualifies him as "starring".

the "real life" aspect of this movie makes it one of my top choices as well. At the other end of the reality spectrum is "The Replacements" although some could say it's sort of like Kurt Warner's story (sp?).
