  • Today I'm going to talk in depth about how I teach language arts to my kids. What our homeschool routine looks like, what curriculum we use, etc. This includes writing, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and more. I'll show a flip through of our different books, and what we like about them.

    Reading is the best as well! My kids free write and journal (mainly praying to God). I don’t agree with busy work and that’s what I like about Gather Round! It’s minimal. We are using Gather Round and Teaching textbooks and that’s pretty much all for my 3 older children. I use masterbooks language arts for my 2nd grader and I’ll be starting masterbooks language arts for my 1st grader coming up as well. I also plan to do masterbooks language arts for my soon to be 9th grader!

    We’re currently using only the composition from level 3 of TGTB, handwriting without tears, and explode the code too. I love your videos because we do a lot of the same things! We also use All About Reading/Spelling and then free pdf workbooks for teaching grammar, like Spectrum, Evan Moor, and Scholastic.

    Thank you for this video! I’ve been kind of agonizing over what to do for LA next year.

      I hope you can figure out a curriculum, and not stress too much! I totally understand the overwhelm…there are so many good options, but it can feel stressful trying to find the best option for YOU!

    I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed adding in TGATB! Side note, I know you guys also read a ton outside of “school,” but we have LOVED the booster cards/books and especially the readers in the updated LA courses! In level 3, the main phonics/reading instruction actually comes from the readers and even though the text isn’t challenging for my 8 year old, we do the readers because they’re so beautifully written and full of strong morals and great life lessons. 🥰 We just read them off the computer since printing those gives me anxiety. 😅

    Hi Julie, thank you so much for this video. You have been so very helpful in our homeschooling journey. I'm wondering if you use a teacher's guide for Explode to Code. Thanks 😊

    • @mamatofive1
      @mamatofive1  2 місяці тому

      No I don’t use the teacher’s guide! I did buy one used once, but never ended up using it. The books are very basic and simple to check without it!

    I agree with reading more. We are still learning phonocs but the more I have my daughter read the better she got. She just turned 6 and can do those early chapter books. I see so many language arts curriculums focus heavily on grammar. And I find that if a kid cannot read yet what's the point of learning parts of the sentence.

    • @mamatofive1
      @mamatofive1  2 місяці тому

      Yes! Reading is the key to it all! That’s awesome your 6 year old is reading chapter books 👏🏻

    What do you use to teach reading? Is it TGTB or do you use something else? Do you do the booster cards?
    Thank you for sharing! We use both Gather Round and TGTB too!!

    Hi Julie! Thank you for this video, it was so helpful! Have a question about the free PDFs. Where do you get them printed and about ow much does it cost you? Thanks! Blessings!

    • @mamatofive1
      @mamatofive1  2 місяці тому +1

      I print them up at home. I have the Epson Ecotank printer which is very cost efficient, a laminator, a binding punch which I use reusable binding with, and I buy paper in bulk on Amazon. It’s an upfront cost, but very worth it as we print up a lot of our curriculum! One of these days I really should add up the price, but I haven’t done that! I also do live in Canada, so some of these companies that offer free shipping from time to time will not apply to me. We have to pay an arm and a leg to have products shipped over the border!
