The muscle memory point is spot on. We had a running gag in the Guitar Hero community that if you took a really long break (weeks or even months) you were suddenly a lot better when you returned. I assume a big part of that was unlearning mistakes you had previously made so many times that they were ingrained. Probably some additional hand fatigue factors in there as well. Something that seems to be really important to me personally, is to take days off from the game. Sometimes life just gets in the way or I start feeling burnt out so I take some days off. But even on the weeks where I'm enjoying whatever game it is, and I'm doing well...I'll force myself to take a couple of days off from the game. For whatever reason, most of the time when I come back to the game after a break, I see improvements.

100% agree with all these points. I think the problem with a lot folks tryna improve is that they're not approaching this with an athletic mind set, which I can understand as not everyone grows up with an athletic background. Hey Seth, I'm Miles from Twitch, This video is a very useful tool for a lot of players that are just starting out, especially not playing one song over and over, most of the times i went to play ITG i give myself only one try at each song i picked and that was it, this along with other tricks and a good form helped a lot and got me from easy charts to 13 blocks charts on ITG in just over a year, unfortunately all of that came to an obrupt end the day i moved to a new city.. studying charts on UA-cam or just put autoplay on OpenITG sounds like a good way to study charts and i'm definitely giving it a try! (once i find, or buy, a good machine, that is)
A year ago, I was stuck in 13s and 14s because I was horribly overweight, obese even (I was 95kg at the time). After putting in some serious effort in exercise and maintaining cardio over a span of 8 months, my weight dropped to 88 kgs (I know it's not much, I love food). Now I can go through most 15s and some 16s after familiarizing the mechanics and techniques of my ultimate nightmares: crossovers and brackets. I'm down to 86kg and I can do some 17s and even got A(broken) in Vaccum S19. My next goals at this time are Allegro Con Fuoco S17 and Wedding Crashers S18. Oh goodness. Wish me luck. Your videos are very, VERY helpful. :)
I cannot stress enough how #5 hits the most for me. Just as an example. Yesterday i was playing alone when suddenly, the top 3, and i mean the LITERAL TOP 3 in my country came to the same arcade to play. I got a chance to play with them, and i got a chance to pick a song. Now, i am faced with a mental barrier of "should i play the song i know really well to keep up with them, or should i choose a different song but fear getting judged by them" And honestly, key word here is "fear". I fear that if i mess up, they'll judge me. We're talking a RT14 surrounded by RT19's (we're playing Maimai. RT is Rating on how skilled you are, the higher the better). Could you maybe chip in another advice on how not to get nervous or feel fear if this happens again? And, thanks for the video, really appreciate it 🙏
A good example maybe exclusive to a Clone Hero is that you can set the song speed higher to increase difficulty instead of just a different song. Helps reaction time/muscle memory when you play “slower” songs imo
#4 was my biggest problem in Prime 2 and XX stage requirements have motivated me to work harder at having a tangible goal in all of my sessions. You highlight a really important point here too, be able to adjust your goals if you don’t meet it
Definitely agree with all of these! One thing I could add however is making sure you eat a light meal and drink water when you play. I guess it differs for every person, but at least for me it makes a world of difference when tackling the harder stuff. Great vids btw, keep em coming!
i think that there is also another reason which goes for a lot of bigginers they tend to panick on fast parts and do not try to see the pattern, most songs has a pattern and they just need to look at it closer, but most people see it as just mashing your keyboard resulting in spamming and make them have a thinking that they aren't good enough
true,i think sometimes spamming random level really help, way better than spamming same song,1st try will suck, but when u play again after random many song,u can improve dramatically
something else i think that is important that didn't get mentioned is that it is definitely ok to take breaks for a few days, it can even help sometimes too in my experience trying to push yourself past your limits while being in pain can stop you playing for years at a time, so taking breaks is key! sometimes having a break will allow you to come back stronger also
Holy shit it’s about time someone made a video on this. I preach these ALL THE TIME to everyone asking me on how to improve, and it frustrates me when you tell them and they just ignore it (especially #1. I was guilty of that for quite a few years)
That "ask you for advice then not take it anyway" thing is so true. I've explained in detail how I sightread charts in rhythm games and the people who ask me how I see things that fast and wanna learn, just ignore it and play the same charts over and over.
the fbi is watching me! i spent three hours last night trying to perfect a project diva extreme chart, eventually failing and going to bed. i needed this!
1:46 You could also just turn on the Autoplay not to analyze the chart instead of watching youtube videos but watching youtube videos still helps because you can learn what most people struggle with and practice for the hard part
For me worked downloading StepF2, it made me try the songs before playing them, just by using my fingers my goal was trying to read the songs, this way I jumped from level 14 or 15 songs, to 18 and 19 shortly, now I am trying lvl 18, 19 and 20 charts.
나시나 I was trying to play that song earlier this week and I really had to scratch my head at the absurd amount to tempo changes that chart had. It it way worse than chaos on supernova 1.
What helped me was first watching a vid of someone do one of the hardest levels in the game and then analyze it. Then u play it. It may take much frustration and time but after i mastered that level after some days i noticed a huge increase of my rhythm. Really wort a try.
2nd point hit me hard. I'm not learning from mistake at all as I'm constantly missing on certain part when I play a song years, until today I'm still missing on the part. Guess I need to combine other tips to really work out my mistake
One reason I progressed at a high rate with pop’n music was because of the fact that the cs versions had training mode. This allowed me to work on tricky parts to songs that I couldn’t pass. Just watching UA-cam videos isn’t going to allow you to actually work on building your ability. When I’m playing pump, I’m supposed to figure it out instantly whenever I see not patterns I I can’t properly do yet. That’s like telling someone who can’t drive to drive on the freeway and to make mistakes. There has to be a better way! Edit: last time I checked these games are about the music. I hate pop music and I will not touch these songs. I just smash arrows to music I like. I’m not going to play bad songs just to be some kind of completionist.
I hate when people because when they do I start to mess up even what it is a chart that I am good at but sometimes when like a friend or family member watches I do not mind
Ok, I'm no rhythm game expert, but I spent three days playing beat saber on expert plus mode with real sticks to beat some demons, and what I found out was, I became extremely smooth in doing whatever movements I was doing, because I did it over and over again, but I had to use shadow memory to get that smoothness and speed.
@@despacito311 In fighting there's this thing known as shadow boxing. Where you imagine your opponent doing a move and then you react to it. There are better and worse ways to react to a certain situation. When there was an incredibly fast progression of notes, I found there were several different ways of hitting them, even thought the notes were the same. I could hold the sticks close to my chest. I could move my arms instead of my wrists, I could use my hips and move my entire body to hit those notes. There was a great possibility of things. When muscle fatigue combined with repetition, and a little bit of meditation and reflection, allowed me to hit some incredibly hard note progressions. The muscle fatigue made me slow and tired and forced me to find the most efficient way of moving. The repetition allowed me to refine those movements over and over, and gave me knowledge and foresight to know what comes next. The rest and meditation allowed me to easier put two and two together, and synchronize my body for the next trial. I was fighting some demons, actually.
Thank you for making this video. Now I'm getting my consciousness back to improve myself and follow your instruction. ------------------- (I just want to share my experience XD) My problems are all except #3. 1. I'm stuck at K-pop songs since I know almost all of them, so I can catch the rhythm well. And 'this' links to #5 as well. 2. It's not that I play the same chart over and over, but I kept playing same 'group' of favorite charts to the point that I made more mistake every time. 4. I did have goals, but somehow I didn't care about it and just mess around. I planned to start over when the XX first launched in my country and get specific amount of S, SS, or SSS in the specific level, then climbing up level by level. But here I am, playing around. 5. I know most people likes K-pop, so I played a lot of K-pop to attract people.(I can play lv18 at max) Sometimes it's not K-pop, but songs that I'm confident to show others.
Another reason is not playing on stricter timings. Playing stricter timings will help you develop new muscle memory to hit more accurately because of the stricter timings. Not doing this will make your accuracy stay the same longer and thus not improve. I play Quaver and i use its adjustibale timing windows, mainly Impossible which reduces marv timing to 8 ms and perfects to 20. For comparison its standard timing (which is the one used for ranking) has 18 ms for marvs and 43 for perfects. Its a really good thing to know, really.
For me, I used the crowd as my drive. Yeah, I kinda started cuz I loved the attention. Doing spins on Pump always impressed the crowd. Then I met the other rhythm gamers who were way better than me. I drove myself, not only getting people’s attention, but trying to SSS or AAA. Now it’s both for me, I wanna see myself improve with better scores and attention from random people walking by. It’s like performances, you want to get the loudest cheers and the biggest audience. Of course, S19s are hard for me, but seeing that crowd of 10 people makes me smile, and seeing that A on that chart makes me smile more.
Number 5 hits me very hard man!!! But I think it is both a good and bad thing depending on how you look at it. . It's bad when you just keep doing it to show off to the crowds with the songs you're comfortable with without any new difficulties and song charts. The same steps you've done hundreds of time with no difficulties. Most of the time, it is a waste of tokens if you're in the arcade. But man, we just like attention sometimes, don't we? Haha I think it's okay if you're just relaxing and don't have anything particular in mind. Show off all you want! . It's good when you have a mindset like "what if I can show off a much harder song to them?" and decide to challenge yourself to the crowds with completely new songs with new difficulties you've never tried before. Don't worry about failing, the crowds mostly don't even mind about that. Heck some of them just want to watch you for the fun of it. This is a good opportunity to take new challenges and go with higher difficulties, because I believe it is more satisfying to show off to the crowds with a performance you've never done before instead of doing a performance you've already mastered. Just say you're tired and exhausted if you fail to perform lol the crowd would surely understand you with all the crazy steps done!!!! Nice video man, very good tips!!!! Rhythm gamer forever!!!!
Thanks for the info it helps me to improve my skill on pump it up. I'm still trying get an A on level 19 single and 18 double and i want to play higher difficulty like 86 s20 soon as i unlock the song Edit: i already got A stage break on s19 and stage pass on d18 :D Another edit: now i can get A stage break on d19 and got B stage break on full moon d20
My goals for rhythm games are simple: Just try to have fun. Unfortunately, I rarely land my goal thanks to the genre demanding a precision and speed that I lack plus my fear of being seen as a failure causing me to mess up more often than not.
Some people can easily jump on and play amazingly without warm up but remember, it's better to work yourself with warm ups first, just try to complete songs and once you feel ready, that's when you should start playing to set scores or complete songs you want to complete
Continue the song until it reached the end and then play it again. It was also my problem with mobile rhythm games like cytus, deemo, lanota, arcaea and etc. I would restart every time when I miss or have an early/late beat. But ever since I played LL:SIF and Bandori, I realize that you shouldn't waste your gameplay just because you missed the beat or get a good/bad instead of perfect/great ((cuz if you restart, all your energy you used will be a waste.)) Now, every time I play a rhythm game (whether mobile, console or arcade) it continues to improve the things that I couldn't do when I was still struggling. Hope this helps!
a personal one for me and maybe it might be usefull for others is, especially with ddr (or high body movement rhythm games ) is to get in shape. It might be obvious but its hard for a just over 250 pound (5"7) individual to try and to standard/difficult songs on ddr whilst carrying that much weight around. I do ddr for mfun mostly but for people who want to get into it competitively, make sure you have a high enough stamina, most of the time your out of shape and that leads to lack there of. just thought i'd share this. i know it wouldnt fit in your video as your's were universal and all.
1. You are playing the same small pool of charts 2. You are building bad muscle memory and not learning from your mistakes 3. You are not watching charts/maps on UA-cam 4. You are not going into your sessions with a goal in mind 5. You are more focused on impressing the crowd around you at the arcade and you're not pushing yourself
i feel like ive hit my max skill level no matter what ive tried so many other songs, ive watched so many videos, and tried to get close to the level of my friends and just fail. my fastest clicking speed has not changed in 2 years, and i dont think i can progress anymore in any rhythm game.
@@kaya6320 depression Not as many people showed up to play anymore. I passed one ITG 18 but then I kept feeling alone, eventually I didn't have much fun playing even if I was playing well. I would rather play easy stuff with friends than hard stuff alone, I'm surprised I passed an 18 before quiting
#5 slaps me a lot. It doesn't matter about the crowds around the arcade because I don't really like being watched by strange person (except if they're going to play the same game). But the hardest one it's really hard to push my self because of my mood swing. Sometimes I can really push myself while my friends are around the arcade or do a livestream on my private facebook account. But yea, no one's watching my stream. 😂

Yeah, theres a reason why top players are called not human/alien
Hm If you hit your "human limit", you either have medical problems or you are already #1 in your game

Now, i am faced with a mental barrier of "should i play the song i know really well to keep up with them, or should i choose a different song but fear getting judged by them"
And honestly, key word here is "fear". I fear that if i mess up, they'll judge me. We're talking a RT14 surrounded by RT19's (we're playing Maimai. RT is Rating on how skilled you are, the higher the better).
Could you maybe chip in another advice on how not to get nervous or feel fear if this happens again?
And, thanks for the video, really appreciate it 🙏
2:17 WHY DID HIS FEET MAKE ME LAUGH SO HARD LOL
Another thing, don’t be afraid to abuse that speed modifier!! Learn at half speed then speed it up when you get things right!
A good example maybe exclusive to a Clone Hero is that you can set the song speed higher to increase difficulty instead of just a different song. Helps reaction time/muscle memory when you play “slower” songs imo
Similar thing exists in osu!, named Double Time. There's also Half Time, but im sure nobody uses it or smth
Legit when I wanna practice, I just play random.
Yes. Don't drink a milkshake before playing. My friend did that and vomited after a few songs.
i think that there is also another reason which goes for a lot of bigginers
they tend to panick on fast parts and do not try to see the pattern, most songs has a pattern and they just need to look at it closer, but most people see it as just mashing your keyboard resulting in spamming and make them have a thinking that they aren't good enough
Most newer charts, anyway. A lot of older charts tend to put in a LOT of double steps which is very annoying.
Well time to play DADADADADADADADADA at berserker difficulty on osu!
With "NF" XD
LOL #5 IS ME WHENEVER I FOUND A SDVX CAB, BRO THANK YOU
true,i think sometimes spamming random level really help, way better than spamming same song,1st try will suck, but when u play again after random many song,u can improve dramatically
something else i think that is important that didn't get mentioned is that it is definitely ok to take breaks for a few days, it can even help sometimes too in my experience
trying to push yourself past your limits while being in pain can stop you playing for years at a time, so taking breaks is key! sometimes having a break will allow you to come back stronger also
Yes, 100% agree with this point! Taking breaks is very important. You have to give yourself time to rest up and recover both mentally and physically.
I would also include playing with stricter jugdment to improve precision
DDR has a lot stricter timing window for Marvelous than PIU has for Perfect.
osu! player be like

play more and get worse overtime
totally not me
@@Noluxarch haha same
Holy shit it’s about time someone made a video on this.
My issue is that I just can't go fast enough and I don't know if it's a physical thing or a mental thing
the fbi is watching me! i spent three hours last night trying to perfect a project diva extreme chart, eventually failing and going to bed. i needed this!
1:46
You could also just turn on the Autoplay not to analyze the chart instead of watching youtube videos but watching youtube videos still helps because you can learn what most people struggle with and practice for the hard part
I watch a lot of your videos, and now finally subscribed! Great video and very informative.
Much love
For me worked downloading StepF2, it made me try the songs before playing them, just by using my fingers my goal was trying to read the songs, this way I jumped from level 14 or 15 songs, to 18 and 19 shortly, now I am trying lvl 18, 19 and 20 charts.
1:47 agreed, i'm a phigros player and the gimmicks in territory battle threw me offguard and watching that chart in youtube helped lmao
I laugh so Hard on the 5th Reason... Cause It's So damn true Sometimes 😂
Yeah, I've tried bad apple s15 without knowledge and that was crazy
나시나 I was trying to play that song earlier this week and I really had to scratch my head at the absurd amount to tempo changes that chart had. It it way worse than chaos on supernova 1.
What helped me was first watching a vid of someone do one of the hardest levels in the game and then analyze it. Then u play it. It may take much frustration and time but after i mastered that level after some days i noticed a huge increase of my rhythm. Really wort a try.
I memorize the dance steps before going to the arcade. Works better where I love the song enough to keep on repeating it.
Every time I have a bad rhythm game session, I go back to this video and it really helps. I now want to go back to Round 1 to play DDR LOL
this really helps me a lot. still trying to breakthrough S18 and D18 charts in PIU. especially point #1 and #3
2nd point hit me hard. I'm not learning from mistake at all as I'm constantly missing on certain part when I play a song years, until today I'm still missing on the part. Guess I need to combine other tips to really work out my mistake
Ah yes I saw Meiling in the video
I’m surprised there’s no beat saber in here
God that last one was me. I knew I finally got over it when I will sight right the highest difficulty I can go around a crowd, know I could fail.
This video could be re titled as "HappyF33tz knows you better than you know yourself" and I'd be fine with it.
Well, I'm stuck at Novice.
Yup the literal first one cuz i keep on playing the 200 same charts over and over again on osu. gonna go download 21gb of osu maps now😂
AlexEd R only 200 wow
Wtf I have >40k and it still feels like it's not enough lol
1st tip very helpful! getting S in easy mode is nice but progress is nicer
I hate when people because when they do I start to mess up even what it is a chart that I am good at but sometimes when like a friend or family member watches I do not mind
Literally applyable to competitive fighting games, too. Thx for the advice G 👍
Ok, I'm no rhythm game expert, but I spent three days playing beat saber on expert plus mode with real sticks to beat some demons, and what I found out was, I became extremely smooth in doing whatever movements I was doing, because I did it over and over again, but I had to use shadow memory to get that smoothness and speed.
what
@@despacito311 In fighting there's this thing known as shadow boxing.
7 year old me unable to beat the vector level in sonic generations: pathetic
Thank you for making this video. Now I'm getting my consciousness back to improve myself and follow your instruction.

(I just want to share my experience XD)
My problems are all except #3.
Oh, another question.
Is it okay to skip levels instead of climbing one by one?
I think I'm stuck at my own skill level cause I don't try other rhythym games or do something new like new keybinds.
I was playing drs and every time this kid passed by he would jump on the pad
I’m thankful for Yuisin’s videos
For me, the reason why i suck at rythm games is because I suck at reading patterns if song is fast
Thanks for the info it helps me to improve my skill on pump it up. I'm still trying get an A on level 19 single and 18 double and i want to play higher difficulty like 86 s20 soon as i unlock the song
Edit: i already got A stage break on s19 and stage pass on d18 :D
Another edit: now i can get A stage break on d19 and got B stage break on full moon d20
My goals for rhythm games are simple:
Just try to have fun.
Unfortunately, I rarely land my goal thanks to the genre demanding a precision and speed that I lack plus my fear of being seen as a failure causing me to mess up more often than not.
Oh so that's why I'm stuck at normal mode in project diva
Jesus Christ this sounds like a literal workout plan
1:54 *tai lopez liked that*
I always come back here to remind myself that I need to try newer songs
Some people can easily jump on and play amazingly without warm up but remember, it's better to work yourself with warm ups first, just try to complete songs and once you feel ready, that's when you should start playing to set scores or complete songs you want to complete
oh yes.... playing the same songs over so many people like doing this and branching songs sometimes I'm nervous
How to fc a song without even restarting it :(
Continue the song until it reached the end and then play it again. It was also my problem with mobile rhythm games like cytus, deemo, lanota, arcaea and etc. I would restart every time when I miss or have an early/late beat.
But ever since I played LL:SIF and Bandori, I realize that you shouldn't waste your gameplay just because you missed the beat or get a good/bad instead of perfect/great ((cuz if you restart, all your energy you used will be a waste.))
Now, every time I play a rhythm game (whether mobile, console or arcade) it continues to improve the things that I couldn't do when I was still struggling.
Hope this helps!
@@inana_nana Absolutely not 😢
a personal one for me and maybe it might be usefull for others is, especially with ddr (or high body movement rhythm games ) is to get in shape.
1. You are playing the same small pool of charts
2. You are building bad muscle memory and not learning from your mistakes
3. You are not watching charts/maps on UA-cam
4. You are not going into your sessions with a goal in mind
5. You are more focused on impressing the crowd around you at the arcade and you're not pushing yourself
1:50 yes... I do that a bit, thanks to Yuisin music game I can do that :3
Thanks for the tips! I will going to follow the steps!
knowing the song can help too. some songs have irregular beats and it may put off new listeners!
Drink water too. Your muscles can have a slower reaction time if you’re any bit dehydrated
i think this is gonna help a lot thanks
i feel like ive hit my max skill level no matter what
ive tried so many other songs, ive watched so many videos, and tried to get close to the level of my friends and just fail.
my fastest clicking speed has not changed in 2 years, and i dont think i can progress anymore in any rhythm game.
Arthritis holds me back these days. ;'(
For me it was losing the will to live and just losing my love for the game itself along with my love for so many other things
yikes, what happened
@@kaya6320 depression
Not as many people showed up to play anymore. I passed one ITG 18 but then I kept feeling alone, eventually I didn't have much fun playing even if I was playing well. I would rather play easy stuff with friends than hard stuff alone, I'm surprised I passed an 18 before quiting
@@fernz6026 I'm so sorry to hear that, going through something similar. Which ITG community were you apart of?
@@kaya6320 rather not say
I don't want the people who left to feel like I'm calling them out or something.
#1 is basically my reason, but on song genre rather than difficulty or tech patterns
pretty sure the only reason im stuck is literal pain and inability to gain any more speed
