You can pull data from a Hyper-V VM in one of two ways. First, you can use a shared drive. Second, you can create a .VHDX disk and attach that disk to the VM. Transfer the files then attach the virtual disk to the host machine.

how to build a distributed open source analysis network? kinda like bellingcat but to more accurately estimate Chinese deaths? One person can't possibly stare at all the funeral homes crematory and graveyards in China etc. I figure if anyone had an idea about how to use e.g. php and e.g. altervista (it definitely has SQL) to start trawling for distributed OSINT on China it would be you. (I think altervista also allows php).

You should think about doing a video on VPNs, maybe you have and I haven't seen it. I think there's a lot of details about why different vpns are capable of different things, how tunnels work, and how hacking and data collection works that would fit into that and it would be informative to both parts of your audience, as well as possibly being worth more to people like atlas.

Really enjoyed the video. Found your channel when you started covering the events in Ukraine.
As someone that works in low-level IT at my company, my initial (definitely snarky) thought upon seeing the title of the video was, "Well open Bomgar, get into the device you are working with (VM or otherwise), and either copy/paste or transfer the file over to your computer."
Seeing how it can actually be done in the times I have to use vSphere instead is something I'll keep in my back pocket, but I don't think they'd like me messing with the VMs for the stores in that manner.
As to the shirt idea, I submit the phrase that explains a lot of what I see happen way above my head. Again, low-level IT here. The shirt should, somewhere, say "Invisible Magic" on it because that's the best way to explain stuff to people when they don't actually want to know why/how something happend.
The test for the "invisible magic" answer is pretty easy. No matter your position, if you work in IT and someone asks how something works, and you actually know, the test is to say something like, "I COULD explain it to you. But do you REALLY want to know? Because it'll take a minute." Hence, invisible magic.

  • @Ajicles
    @Ajicles Рік тому +2

Enhanced session mode could be a better solution. Connecting that VM over SMB to the Hypervisor would not be a good idea if that VM has network level access. If you have a user account created on the Hypervisor that has administrative priv. you are now caching those credentials on the VM. If that VM becomes compromised the bad actor now has access to your Hypervisor perhaps even with administrative priv.
This is how the banking malware emotet spreads laterally through networks. When you think you have cleaned up one PC, it using RPC to reinfect the host.

Virt manager automagicaly added it to client, there is probably an option in hyper-v, when file copy is done, eject it from client and open it on host. For one time use it works. Best way are network shares.

That’s not really being “networked”. Maybe there’s a reason that I don’t understand but I’m so glad I don’t have arbitrary limitations as an SRE. It seems like early 2000s IT stuff that just doesn’t scale. If I’m touching a gui I’m writing automation to never do it again. Id rather let my code manage my environment so I can go ski lol. You seem like a smart enough guy that you wouldn’t be doing this without reason though.

    Ouch!
This is where I'd be using VirtualBox as you can share a folder from the Host to the VM and both can use it at the same time.
But it does require the VM using the VirtualBox extensions, and if your security requirements don't allow that...well, looks like your "disk shuffle" is the way you have to go.
Fun fact, you can have both Hyper-V and VirtualBox running simultaneously on the same host.
I run most of my Linux VMs in VirtualBox and any Windows VMs in HyperV.
Hyper-V is faster as you are one layer closer to the HW. VirtualBox does more virtualization, so you can virtualize Sound, Networking, Display, etc.
Getting sound and higher resolution display for a HyperV Linux Guest is more of a struggle.
And now that VirtualBox 7 is out, it has a virtual TPM and UEFI "BIOS" so you can legitimately run Windows 11 Guests with no work-arounds provided the underlying Host HW is on the approved HW list.

What I'm doing now though which is quite fun. Where networking is allowed is running a next cloud instance on my server. It gives me all the "cloud" file sync stuff but without giving my data to the cloud.
Then for the project VM I give it its own username and password, and have it sync the project data folder specific to its function directly into my global file structure.
So the VM only has /documents/project 1/code/*
But from the host desktop I have the full tree and when I fire up my laptop it's all there too, feeling really keen sync it to your phone lol.
(You can also get version histories and the like as well from next cloud)

It was a bsd based system, the host was Linux and it didn't want to loop mount the partitions of the VM into the host, I think due to the corruption and it being an old disk format type. I managed to boot off install media for the VM, it was able to mount the disks, but it was only an installer environment so no tools or network. Then to get the files out I actually used a virtual serial port lol. Like the good old days. Echo somefile.cfg > /dev/ttyS1 kinda deal in the guest and the reverse on the host. Felt like it was 1990 again lol. 😆

I know the answer to the title. I am just laughing b/c I did not realize you were a coder. Who the fark uses virtual machines? Spawn up a VM in Azure and toss it when you're done. Yeah I was using Virtual PC, VMWare Fusion, and Virtual Box prior to Hyper-V.....

What exactly is wrong with RDP? Why, why, why would you use the Hyper-V Manager at all? VMconnect is a crutch. RDP has USB-Support and can share drives, with no hassle at all.

RDP only works when you are connected via RDP. If, say, you were generating files on a VM for a long running process that is essentially headless then using the VHDX method would mean you don't have to deal with MSTSC and frequent inactivity log outs.

@@cheekychappy1234 RDP doesn't have inactivity log outs - if you're know how to configure it of course.....

@@MartinKuras Fair enough but the comment still stands in a general sense. You are reliant on MSTSC staying up and staying connected. It's reliability might be fine for adhoc solutions but can't stand up if you need any degree of reliability.

If you used a proper desktop virtualization package like VirtualBox or VMware Workstation (Player), you'd just have the option to add a shared directory and that would be that. But because Hyper-V is a piece of dogshit, that feature just does not exist.

Hyper-V needs USB device passthrough (not just printer or storage). Had to use VMware Workstation to use USB devices :(
