It pays not to get hung up on numbers, the numbers make it sound like the display is worse than an iPhone 4 or Galaxy S3, that's definitely not the case. While ytou can see pixels if you hold the phone close to your face, at normal distances you can't, and the brightness, color, contrast, power consumption and response time are all improved.

The A3 screen is right on the border of being what's considered a "retina" display, if the resolution gets any finer, the human eye lacks the ability to resolve more detail from the image. At that point the differences between other specifications of the display become more important to the picture - color gamut and balance, response time, contrast, brightness etc. and those are all in line with flagship displays. Yes, It's not the best display in the world, but when showing video content it's actually quite good as long as you don't hold the phone too close to your face. For me, the biggest letdown is the lack of support in Xiaomi's Android One variant for the ultra bright mode that the display is capable of.

Well she is pretty. But I am actually just happy to see more women in tech journalism overall, regardless of how they look. And especially when they are really good reviewers.
All the people commenting about how 720p is a dealbreaker, while it's actually the reason to get this phone. As a relatively active person who sometimes spends over a day without an outlet, the biggest issue I have with modern phones is battery life. I'll take the massive battery life over a higher resolution which makes the phone more expensive, brings absolutely zero advantage in terms of utility and only a small advantage in terms of media. If you want a 1080p phone, there's a ton of them on the market, just pick one. There's no reason for you to hate a phone that's not for you.

720p only look nice if the display is below 5 inches like the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. If over 5.5 inches, it will look weird or blurry. Most of my phones are 1080p except for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

the galaxy a50 is also as cheap, and you get literally the best 1080p amoled display on the market, or the galaxy a30 which gets the same screen but for about $180.
I've had this phone for about half a month now and, honestly, the screen is not as bad as people think it is. You'd probably only notice it being a 720p screen if you put it side-by-side or you are way too used to a 1080p screen. It's a really snappy phone with great battery life. What annoys me more is that there's no preinstalled compass/levelling app and remote app, and the calibration of the gyroscope seem a bit off. There's also still no Android 10, which is sad but at least I'm sure it's coming. Overall a good phone with some annoying things with it that I could live with.
wrong choice in this case, usually 720p amoled would be arguably better than 1080p lcd, but the mi a3 screen has more going on than just the resolution, it is using a pentile subpixel distribution amoled display, that is an obsolote 2012 amoled techonology, I guess samsung had some unused old panels from that year and sold them to xiaomi, pentile amoled has 2 green subpixels, one of them is shared with near pixels, that makes the display seem even more blurry, on paper it is a 720p, but in practice it will look like a 600p instead. the samsung a20 for instance, which has a 720p amoled but using the newest infinity display will look way sharper than the mi A3
It's quite delay.. Global and Indian bloggers made the same.. Months back. Loved the way of review... Will be expecting it sooner for others interesting mobiles.
I actually bought this to upgrade my mi a2. Knowing that it had a 720P 6 inch screen, but what bothers me most about it was comparing it to my mi a2 and seeing that it opens UA-cam slower, and took photos slightly slower. The mi a2 is just a snappier phone all together. it just doesn't make sense to me that it's $100 more. I'm not sure if it opens the apps slower because the clock speeds are lower, but that's just what I noticed. That being said not every app was slower. Most were exactly the same. You tube and Google maps were slower.
@@HendraSpookWasito you won't be missing on anything if you go for the a30, you still get that almost flagship-like display, you do lose a bit in performance, but for the average customer it should be more than enough.

Omg stop bitching about the 720p screen!! At least its an amoled display. Apple sell a phone with 720p LCD screen for £750. At least xiaomi only charge $200 for it.
No reason to compare it with Apple. Apple have their own fan base and ecosystem. But xiaomi.people buy it because of the price. I've been using note series from note 3, 4, skip the 5 and 6. And now using 7. To me it's still better to go with 1080 ips and rear fpr. It should have been and easy pick for everyone.
Thank you for a nice review! Too bad that Xiaomi decide to go for such compromises with CPU and display... camera looks quite promising.

Everyone is shit talking about 720p display. I upgraded this device from a LG G4 which had 1440p display and I couldn't be more happy, low resolution is noticeable yes and camera is arguably not as good as G4s however in every other aspect this is a much better phone.

2 reasons why mi a1 is still the best in 'A'series :-
1- Telephoto lens.
2- Sound quality.
I'm using a 23" 1080p Viewsonic Monitor for my Freelance Illustrating Job. It has 96 ppi and it's display is as clear as a crystal. Xiaomi Mi A3 has 286ppi. Why on earth would someone has the eye to still see it as blurry and really get distracted by it. It doesn't make any sense... :)
Why, Lord why no NFC??
Because "NFC payment sector only holds less than 10% of the entire Chinese mobile transaction market" and "The QR code model of WeChat and Alipay apparently takes the lead in the Middle Kingdom".

720p but don't worry, now you can break the back too
the galaxy a50 is also as cheap, and you get literally the best 1080p amoled display on the market, or the galaxy a30 which gets the same screen but for about $180.

Amoled at 720p vs lcd at 1080p..... Gimme the Amoled anyday.
wrong choice in this case, usually 720p amoled would be arguably better than 1080p lcd, but the mi a3 screen has more going on than just the resolution, it is using a pentile subpixel distribution amoled display, that is an obsolote 2012 amoled techonology, I guess samsung had some unused old panels from that year and sold them to xiaomi, pentile amoled has 2 green subpixels, one of them is shared with near pixels, that makes the display seem even more blurry, on paper it is a 720p, but in practice it will look like a 600p instead. the samsung a20 for instance, which has a 720p amoled but using the newest infinity display will look way sharper than the mi A3
