Those mid budget movies seem to have disappeared. Not a blockbuster, but still a great cast. Just a fun movie nothing to deeply analyze, but still 90 minutes well spent.
Also FWIW, I remember reading a story about Tom Hanks like 20 years ago in which Hanks said that at some point in late 80s, early 90s, Hanks was frustrated with his career so he talked with his management team about reconfiguring things. It was only after that, that he shot Philadelphia, went on a streak of great movies and became known as a serious actor. Before that, I think he was just specializing in light comedies. Anyway, the point is that Hanks definitely felt he had hit a career low at that time.
This (the full podcast) is the single best interview I’ve heard on Conan. Tom Hanks was more himself than I have ever heard. I learned more about acting and making films and the film industry and how Tom approaches it differently in this one hour. It felt intimate and personal and hysterical. Tom Hanks is a gas. Ty Conan. Ty Tom. Sometimes you capture a genuine time together and you did that here. You guys should probably dress up and mini golf together.
I knew TH was talented AF. I _didn't_ realize what a stunning raconteur he is. All this AND dropping a *cork-soaker* bomb with logarithmic precision. 😂
That Thing You Do has always been on my favorite movies list! It’s just a good story and an overall fun watch! All I want from a movie watching experience!
Since Mr Hanks brought up Bosom Buddies, I saw a rerun about a year ago, flash back to their high school dance, and on the hall way wall, had a list of the football players, and I know I saw t Hanks, as QB, I then looked back on my rewind, Scolari was another player, and then I did further research on the names of the team, I found most names were in the credits at the end of the different players..
Theres nothing better then 80s Hanks. I enjoy most of his flicks but 80s Hanks is my favorite. I say it everywhere but I'll say it here, The Burbs is my favorite movie hands down.
VHS changed the filmgoing experience radically. Movies once screened, originally vanished. If you did a remake 10 years later no one had the original to compare it to. And if you made a bad film, well, more than likely it vanished in your past.
At the time of their release, I think we tend to compare movies as a competition between what else is released that year. When we watch an old movie, we weigh it on its own stand-alone merits. That Thing You Do is one of my favourite movies ever, one of a handful of movies I own on physical media, and one of the most Beatle-like non-Beatles tune.
So many great movies Splash, The Burbs,Nothing in Common,Saving Private Ryan, Road To Perdition he hasn't done a bad movie. Polar Express wasn't good but he was a cartoon so that doesn't count.
Bachelor Party was probably the most juvenile movie Hanks was in. That being said…. Hanks was great in Bachelor Party . In fact almost everyone was great in Bachelor Party. It was a fun movie .
I'm pretty sure an English person saying "not half bad" is expressing wild enthusiasm. If Tom's career did have a low point it was "Mazes & Monsters" but that was very early on.
i saw that thing you do back when it came out and i thought it was really good, tbh i forgot about it but i watched it a few times back then, i need to rewatch that one and joe vs the volcano
I am sorry, I saw That Thing you Do in 1997 and it was nothing to write home about. But Turner and Hooch did speak to me. That's a joke, I haven't seen it. What is true is that I cried my eyes out when I saw Castaway.
I saw him on a show that had Michael J Fox in it...cant recall the name, but because of that, i watch some other show he was in, and then i watched his movies. It was how he acted...or whatever, that got my attention. Didn't think he was cute either. (Although he was and is) Geena Davis was in same show, watched her films for same reasons. Some people catch your eye. I dint watch much TV and haven't been to a movie for awhile...i think it is because he seems like a nuce guy. Ive been watching this particular podcast of this conversation and ..I eant to be both Conan's and Tom's friend. Seriously. (Dont worry guys, im harmless) but i want to move into this neighborhood and maybe pal around. I want funny, nice, polite people for neighbors. Im the girl that says hi when passing by, and its like everyone is cranky. Im happy when they say hi back. So California, here i come. Castaway is one of my favorites. I put off watching it because i thought, Oh Tom ...how boring this will be...thought ya made a mistake. But, i loved it. But....i haven't watched all of your movies. I just know that when tom hanks is in it...its probably good. Thanks for entertaining me. You too Conan❤❤
They all can't be winners, but that's out of the actor's hands. Hanks has a pretty good batting average and he's always interesting even in bad movies.
Bachelor Party had some hilarious scenes but the Cole character deserved better. He might not have been the nicest person but he didn’t deserve to be put in a situation in which he only survived because of a highly improbable instance of good luck in the form of a car being under his naked, falling ass.
Tom Hanks' recent flops have been the graphic novel adaptation Here (2024), and Pinocchio, so time will tell if they eventually find an audience regardless of the reviews.
Punchline, The 'Burbs, Turner and Hooch, Joe vs the Volcano, and Bonfire of the Vanities, between 1988 and 1992 was a career low. Basically, everything between Big and A League of their Own was m'eh or just plain bad. Then he really takes off after that.
He should have put his foot down and stopped Toy Story 4 from being made. It's not at all a bad film, but its existence is just wrong after how well Toy Story 3 resolved the story.
ive not seen every single movie but majority, id say his worst movies are after 2000 ... and some of the best are not critically acclaimed.... some that are thought of as great, are not that good.. but he has a catalog of funny and serious... and hes a great actor cause some of his films you forget its tom.. not every actor does that
Jin of BTS just released a song called "I'll Be There" and I posted on social media that all my many followers who are fans of That Thing You Do will love this! (and they did)
One minute in & gonna have to disagree with Conan & agree with Tom. He was the biggest movie star in the world in the 80s but then he had a few flops & he was kinda considered, if not a has-been, then let's say a well-trodden known commodity. And his big comeback was the baseball movie where he coached girls (can't think of the name of it off the top of my head). It kinda put him back on top & then not long after that he did Forest Gump. He's been a world wide legendary symbol of iconic goodness ever since.
That Thing You Do was my favorite movie in high school. It's still one of my go-to movies when I just want something fun.
Hey it’s the o needers
My Grandma bought me 'That Thing You Do' on video tape because she knew I liked music. I should go and watch it again
Those mid budget movies seem to have disappeared. Not a blockbuster, but still a great cast. Just a fun movie nothing to deeply analyze, but still 90 minutes well spent.
I saw that movie as a kid at a drive in theater and I've loved it ever since
When I drive past a store after hours, and see their sign still on, i always think of Guy Patterson's dad
That thing you do, made my son so interested in music and drums that the kid became an expert. It’s a great show.
that's onederful
8:48 I never knew how much joy hearing Tom Hanks call film reviewers cocksuckers would bring me 😂 and I was a film critic for about five years
Same. Bigly! 😊
It's love how much Tom Hanks reminds me of David Letterman. "Hold on to your quarters, Jasper!"
Joe vs. The Volcano is one of his most underappreciated performances, and still one of my favourite films! ❤
Tom Hanks' 'bad' movies are some of his funnest
The Ladykillers
@@HypnoSwag I liked that movie but it was strange
Always loved The Money Pit when I was a kid. No one talks about it anymore
Mazes and Monsters
@@-Ricky_Spanish- I remember this. Bad TV movie, I think.
My music teacher showed my class "That Thing You Do" in middle school. Still listen to the song! Thanks, Adam Schlesinger.
Can Conan do a whole show as if its the 40's? Always gets me laughing.
Thanks Coco and Tom, for getting us all through this terminal news cycle!
The 'Burbs is one of his funniest movies, I don't care what anyone says 😂
That movie is so legendary. Every character is money.

3am content is real. Tom is a living legend and so humble. xo Great in so many films, but Road to Perdition is my favorite of his.
A great understated performance..by Jude Law,also
I was just thinking about 'Everytime We Say Goodbye" as an unknown Tom Hanks gem, and then he does @ 6:00.
One movie of Tom's that I love that was panned by critics - Joe Vs. The Volcano
I used to think Joe Versus the Volcano was a bad movie, then I grew up and watched it again and now I think it's a great movie.
"Oh, I have no response to that." is one of my go to answers.

Yes.. i forgot that one.. amazing
The Burbs !!!
Yup. A masterpiece of quotable dark comedies.
That Thing You Do! and The ‘Burbs are still my two favorite Hanks flicks.

Someone inevitably always cuts onions whenever I watch Castaway...
I just named 7 good Tom Hanks films off the top of my head, so he definitely has more than 6 good ones 😂
His performance in The Shawshank Redemption alone would be enough to make up for any bad films he was in.
@@vovahimselfGot bad news bud

The 'Burbs has entered the chat. Best comedy of all time? Top 10? Top 5? Top 3? Yup.
Ahh...The Circle? Ithaca? Larry Crowne?Bonfire of the Vanities?
Such an American icon. I’m 45 and cannot remember a time in my life without seeing Tom Hanks on a screen. Living legend of the highest order.

That Thing You Do is an absolute head to toe masterpiece. The Playtone Galaxy is a never ending gallery of art and class.
Tom Hanks is makes funny look easy. So good.
The Burbs was Tom's best movie. EVER!
Joe Versus The Volcano was one that I rediscovered a few years ago and was blown away by. Probably my favorite movie he made now
Love Tom Hanks, but...Pinocchio remake :)
Wasn't that terrible, or am I thinking of Gepetto?
This was such a great podcast :D

Tom hanks is great at improvising... or as he calls it, the school of "This horse is not dead."
I would think his lowest point was that movie "mazes and monsters"... That was pretty much his first film though lol
