Did a 6 month UN tour there in 1988 with the Canadian Forces. Stationed at the Blue Beret Camp, but went to Ledra Palace on numerous occasions. A great tour! Too bad the politicians can't get their act together because Cyprus could be a tourism gold mine, more than it is now.
Mate you don't understand what selection was like for me in the RAF reg we had to be down by the pool every morning by half 11 in full kit Sun cream oakleys, flip flops 3 days In and the ice cream machine broke some lads couldn't hack it still have bad thoughts when I hear the ice cream van in the summer
I was posted to a base which was a base, then a holiday resort for about a decade, then a base again. It was a beautiful spot beside the sea in Australia.
I was there with the RAF and noticed how smart the Turkish Army was. There were numerous holiday hotels along the sea front in Famagusta, all fitted out and included working air conditioning, which the Turkish Army took over as barracks for their troops. Good idea, but the junior ranks discovered that the hotels were greek owned, so they trashed them and found themselves living in tents. Pretty dumb Eh ?
I done 5 years then op banner followed by op Granby. It's all about right time, right place. Lads have gotta start somewhere, they obviously don't join up as an old wardog like yourself 😂😂👍
I feel old...I did a tour there in 88, A Coy 3PPCLI, Urban company quartered in the Ledra Palace (is that still being used as barracks?). It looks the same, more or less, we were there 14 years after the war, and here we are 32 years later, and it does not seem that any progress has been made. Kind of sad.
I am I right in saying there is a medal awarded for this tour yet EOD operators dont get one for NI even though they are on the streets most days dealing with devices most days ???

Don't get how your saying it's on the wrong side. If you noticed they're not French soldiers, they're British. Commonwealth troops have the cap badge over the left eye.
The Captain could do documentaries. He nailed the walking and arm gestures.
It looks like he does guided tours.
Did a tour in 96 ....home for 6 months ....the pool has been cleaned up a lot lol 😂

The Bear Den Photography Cool thank you for your service! What was it like serving with the UN?
Anyone else assume this would be a story about the RAF?

Far to dangerous for the RAF boys..
My home for six months in 1988...good tour and many a good time around the pool.

Nicely shaped berets! 😂 But seriously..... Only first tour after five years service?!😯

I was there too. Urban Coy. I wonder if the central AC ever got fixed. It was quite hot on 4th floor. My Dad did a tour in 68 and again in 80.
Stay safe lads.

Did the Canadians leave any hockey sticks behind?
Not a chance...I brought mine home...
Nope, besides, wouldn't be able to fit it in my barracks box...
Looks like the berets melted onto their heads.
now that seems to be a pleasure posting
What's the blue-red-blue patch on rt arm?
Tac flash of the guards division
@@meme4one Household Division, it is mostly guards but also includes a few cavalry regiments.
Not too many changes since my tour in 77/78 ... a lot less sandbags now.
If the British still governed Cyprus there wouldn’t be a Turkish zone of occupation.

How come they are un-armed? Political tension?

Brave guys!
I always found the idea of the UN Peacekeeper interesting, how do you maintain peace when you're unarmed?
Usually in most deoloyments they are armed and i believe at some stage they were in Cyprus
My grandmothers family home (which is still in her name) is under Turkish occupation in Cyprus. Hopefully someday we'll get it back.

My dad and uncle both served for Turkish Army in Cyprus. We went to visit two years ago, it’s a lovely place.
