It’s implied through the episode the fungus spread through contaminating some batches of wheat or grain. Joel and Sarah didn’t eat pancakes, they didn’t have the cake, they refused the biscuits the neighbor offered them(which were eating!), and Sarah not taking any cookies. They just barely missed being part of the infected by not having anything that had to do with flour/wheat.
Oooooh, I totally missed that.
And the conflict in Jakarta; take a guess where the largest flour mill in the world is that provides a majority of the world with flour?

The fungus spread was explained in episode 2. But they did explain how the old lady neighbour got infected when she got a checkup at the hospital in the city. The spread happened initially in the city. I'm assuming through trade and exports, what was exported from Jakarta (wheat and grain) had spread throughout the world. And when the first trigger (chemical reaction of the fungus) first started, a chain reaction began (as what was explained in episode 2 that Cordyceps acts like a neural network).
Cordecyps contaminating wheat and grain > manufactured into consumable goods like flour and rice > gets shipped through major global ports > first incident happening in Jakarta > 2 days later, infection spreads in the USA.
With Indonesia being so close to the equator (warmer temperature creates an opening for the fungi to thrive inside humans), and is an Asian country which predominantly consumes rice (grain), it then becomes the first trigger for the first infection to occur.
Fun fact: Marlene's actress actually is the same one who did the mocap and voice work for the game. She is the only actress from the game to come back and do the show.
From what i have heard. Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson will do cameos in later episodes.

I'm surprised that Sam recognized Pedro Pascal from Narcos and none of you mentioned Game of Thrones because Bella Ramsey(Ellie) portrayed Lyanna Mormont in GoT. This show reminds me that a zombie fungus apocalypse movie from 2016 that seems like it's in the same universe as The Last of Us called, "The Girl with All the Gifts". That was definitely an 80's song at the end of the episode.
Pedro and Bella can bond over being in GOT and getting killed by giants.
That's a big part of why this story hits so hard, The fungus they're talking about is real, and this is what it does to it's hosts. and it's theoretically possible that this could happen. and the characters and dialogue are so well written.
Theoretically possible in 100000s of years haha. Never in our lifetime and to say global warming could cause this is laughable. We are in one of the cooler periods of Earths history. Mammals have been around for 200 million years, there is evidence of zombified ants from 50 million years ago. The earth was MUCH warmer then. 0 evidence of mammals getting infected or controlled in that whole timeframe.

Fun casting fact: Pedro and Bella were both told not to play the games to prepare for their role as Joel and Ellie, probably so that they don't try to flat out copy the way the game characters say everything even though it seems about half the script is the same exact words as the games.
Joel's daughter put on an amazing performance she made you fall in love with her in 10 minutes of screen time.
I remember playing the game back in 2013 and the part where Sarah dies sucker punched my feels, I had to pause for a while to compose myself. The first video game to make me shed a tear, and the way they have adopted it into this series is just marvelous, they have completely nailed it.
The song at the end is Never Let Me Down Again by Depeche Mode. Very much an 80’s banger!
“I’m taking a ride with my best friend…” definitely a reference to Joel and Ellie’s travels.

One of the best pilot episodes I've ever seen.
The pilot episode is one of the best pilots I've ever seen even surpassing that of the Walking Dead. The introduction gave clarity and showed the individual struggles people had to cope with. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they build the characters and how they develop the relationships and attempt to match that of the game.
Zombie TV shows and films have been done millions of times before and often lack creativity but this so far has a breath of fresh air and if like the games concentrates on human emotion and connection then I think it'll do incredibly well and I can't wait to watch the rest of the series.
In the game the main transmission method were bites and spores. The spores have been removed for the show though, as they would basically mean that humanity had 0 chance of survival. Instead they added the little mouth tendrils to spread the infection. As for the initial infection it is, with the knowledge of this episode, likely flour originating from Jakarta. They had a lot of chances to eat flour based products, such as the morning pancakes, the biscuits from the neighbors, the raisin cookies from the neighbors, and the birthday cake in the evening. Second episode is out already and will answer some of the questions. :)
They removed the spores because it would be hard to shoot certain scenes in a show with gas masks on. The spores make no real difference in survivability compared to the game. They had gas masks for the spores. The issue stems from recreating those scenes, which is realistically difficult and less impactful due to the mechanics and trouble behind doing so in a way that makes it comfortable for the actors and enjoyable for the audience. It just wasn't practical.

The point of making an example by hanging someone is really necessary. It might sound harsh, but imagine a random guy gets out of the quarantine zone and gets back in with a bite, he's going to doom everyone inside. When a single person's mistake can kill a whole city, you need to show people the cosecuenses.

Ok so one: Marlene's actor is also her voice in the game is why she looks and sounds like her. Two: Another thing they changed it seems is you don't gotta wear a gasmask around the corpses. Much like the real life version of the fungus when the host dies, they send it out into the air to infect others.
Oh also girls it's not zombies, the host is actually still alive in the first stage at least. They just can't control themselves.

The city they mentioned has the largest flour mill in the world. All day, Joel, Sarah and Tommy avoided eating things with flour in them. Also, 2003 was the hottest year worldwide on record. The perfect "trigger" for the evolution of the fungi. As for the green explosions, that's what electrical transformers look like when they explode.
The hangings are rough but you have to have some kind of punishment for someone putting everyone at risk. It's the same as someone hiding a bite and going back to the group.
Yeah but in public? I know they have to make an example but still. If they do this than what's next? Yes, they theoretically keep the peace but at the cost of their soul.
I think it's much more practical and simpler than that--resources are very scarce, so hangings are just another way to save your bullets, quite frankly.

To freak you ladies out a little more, not only is the planet getting warmer, us humans are getting colder. Our average body temperature has been steadily declining for the last few generations. The average person runs somewhere in the high 97s now (my personal morning norm is 97.4).
Remember, they are not zombies. They are not the undead. When you kill someone, their body doesn't rise up and start walking. They are alive and conscious, trapped inside a body they can no longer control.

Dani knew what was about to happen and powered through. Can't say the same for me. That moment still tears me apart every time.
Someone recently pointed out to me that it wasn’t even the fungus that killed Sarah it was the government, She definitely would’ve lived through those twenty years if it weren’t for that soldier

I’m enjoying how much each actor is embodying the characters from the game. Even if they don’t look exactly like the character, they capture the characters pretty well. Like Tommy feels just like Tommy in the game. I’m excited to see if this show can handle the pressure of using one of the best (my fav) games of all time as a model.

I don't know if this has been answered, but the song at the end is from the 80's. It's a Depeche Mode song called Never Let Me Down Again. I remember getting an ironic laugh out of it, because it's from the Music For The Masses album in a world with well... no more masses. It's rare to hear anything outside of either the Violator or Black Celebration albums in a soundtrack. If productions are shelling out the cash for Depeche Mode, they usually want something from their best albums to get the most bang for their buck.

The Salem they were talking about is more likely Salem, Oregon (it was out west), and Boston to Salem, Oregon is a lot more than an hour. Luckily they only have to get to the capital building in downtown Boston.

It makes more sense if the context of 2003 rather than 2013 (when the game originally took place). I think moving it back to 2003 makes the story make more sense why it took these specific people by surprise more than others.

They aren't like normal zombies. Zombies drive is to feed these ones their goal is to just spread the fungus to everyone on earth. So alot of the time people get bit once and turn they don't eat them.

Tess promised Robert that Joel wouldn't hurt him, because Robert was terrified what Joel would do when he saw what Robert's guys did to her. From Robert's perspective, it'd be safer to kill her and never let Joel know he was involved. Tess promised him Joel answers to her, and she'd make up the story about being jumped, so Joel wouldn't come after him. Because if he believed the promise, she got to leave, alive.
When you're bleeding seriously, as Marlene is, do you think trying to sneak out of a basically military imposed quarantine zone will be easy? The lass needs a chance to get patched up. So she needs to get out of this building to somewhere she can get patched up. Something that's going to require sneaking and crawling and maybe even running for the next few hours is going to make her a burden, resulting in her death. (Fun fact: Marlene is played by the actress who voiced Marlene in the game)

Actually they were being hanged for unauthorized exits and entrance to a quarantine zone. If you're caught outside, and you came from inside, you probably have a way back in. If you're caught coming in without authorization, you have to have been sneaking in. The function of the quarantine zone is to prevent infection getting into the zone. Since one infected (refer back to the scene with the boy with the green shoe laces in the wheelchair you'll see on one of the signs: a bite on the neck or higher can result in full infection in minutes, while a bite at say the ankle or foot will take 12-24 hours to full infection. One infected in a place where say 6 uninfected people are, could turn into 7 infected in under 15 minutes (this would be assuming the infected would just bite someone and move to the next person, which is highly doubtful, but hypothetically possible)., which could mean an entire quarantine zone has a lot of infected in less than a day.
FEDRA - without seeing the name and any signage, my interpretation was "FEDeral Disaster Response/Reaction Administration/Agency" just based on how government agencies often get shortened names.
They are heading to a meeting point with Fireflies, at the "old" capitol building, which is in Boston (the city we know), but outside the "Boston Quarantine Zone" what the quarantine zone encompasses, is what FEDRA was able to secure and keep infection free, but is only a portion of the city. The city of Boston is about 90 square miles (imagine a rectangle 9 miles wide by 10 miles long, or 90 1 mile by 1 mile tiles laid out so all of them connect to at least one other tile, that's the surface area of Boston. If we presume the Quarantine Zone is only 5%m it would be a mere 4.5 square miles, or 4.5 tiles. If we further presume from one corner of Boston is no more than 25 miles from the furthest point, you're looking at maybe a little over 20 miles [not taking into consideration that the capitol building isn't on an outskirt location] The Salem reference is from a radio communication point. The person sending the message is in Salem, advising where to meet someone in "old Boston" (Apologies for the math. My brain works that way. I like to calculate details. I try to keep it simple when the details aren't all there)
As I understand, the music was Depeche Mode (confirmed by subtitles when I watched it), since the code was based on decade... 60s, nothing new, 70s new stuff 80s "x" which Ellie deduced was trouble by telling Joel the song was an 80s #1 "wake me up before you go go?" The song included heavy "electronica" which became a big fad in the 80s when synthesizers became a thing.
The actress playing Marleen is the actual voice actress from the game.

My favorite part about the first episode is that it follows the game sooooo closely. They need to do that with more videogame movies and tv shows, just straight up copy and paste.
Not only that but they expand on the lore and characters, helps that the original writer is working on it though. But 100% best game adaption ever made. easily

the deference with The Last Of Us to other zombie movies. on The Last of us the human infected is still alive while the fungus Controls the brain, while other Zombie movies the infected Dies and Turns into undead, actually its happening in real life the fungus hijacked ants and Controls the ant.
Btw this fungus is a real fungus in the world but it only affects small insects but yeah if it did mutate then this would be probably what the world would look like
The green light is caused by arc flash when a big neighborhood power transformer explodes. Sometimes you'll see it in a thunderstorm, usualy right before a neighborhood goes dark.
They are fast zombies because they are all technically still alive humans, just being controlled by the fungus.

I was very skeptical about Pedro and Bella as Joel and Ellie. But they do it incredibly well. It feels straight out of the game. Also the others ... Nico as Sarah, Gabriel as Tommy, Anna as Tess. All done great. Merle as Marlene anyway cause it's the same actress as in the game.
My conclusion after this episode: I've never been so captivated by the start of a series based on a story I know inside and out.
