  • Today we have a gauge cluster, or instrument cluster, or some call it a dash board, from a 1998 Mack CL-713 Truck. Customer states, no illumination. This has been to another electronics shop and they said they can't fix it. Lets see if I can.

Old extension cords and old appliances that people throw out makes for a good source of free uncoated wire.

Any recommendation on the temperature rating for the magnet wire?

Let me try to explain why LEDs in cars don't dim well:
If an LED is 3V/20mA and there is 9V over the series resistor (so you have a total of 12V), the series resistor must be 9/0.02 = 450 Ohm. A normally light bulb might be like 1.2 W, so at 12V it has current of 100mA and thus the resistance of the bulb is 120 Ohm. To make the bulb half as bright the car will put a 120 Ohm resistor in series with the bulb. The problem is, if you put a 120 Ohm resistor in series with the LED, which already has a build in 450 Ohm resistor, the total series resistance will only go up from 450 to 450+120 and this will not half the current.
