- The compact Kia Forte makes all the right changes for 2019. With a high-tech interior, sporty exterior and a very solid driving experience, it could take more than a few sales away from the Toyota Corolla.

I just had a 2019 Kia Forte SX as a loaner while my Optimal SXL was being being serviced it’s a really nice car
EX? There is no SX trim level on the forte
Lucas Izaguirre whatever trim it was I confuse it with the Optima
I'm looking at getting the Kia Forte. My 2017 Toyota Corolla is boring.
Gilbert Galvan Gilbert Galvan I’d do the same but have you seen the new Corolla especially the hatchback it looks pretty cool I was planning to trade my Optima for a Sorento or Stinger
@@La-yt1wr I have. But you get more with the Kia Forte, and Toyota still refuses to have Android Auto on their cars.
I purchased the "base" Forte FE because I wanted that 6-Speed manual, and I absolutely love it. Fantastic gas mileage, and feels more powerful than the numbers show. The base model has all the features I need, and even more features that I don't really use. There's nothing about the 2019 Kia Forte that I don't like.
37 miles to the gallon combined? That's pretty damn good.
shoulda been getting that 20 years ago
It's a great looking economy car. I especially like the rear and profile. It looks much more expensive and upscale than the price and class segment suggest. It makes the Civic look like a bloated toy. I bought this new Forte's cousin, the Hyundai Elantra, which has a 6-spd auto and the same 2.0L engine. I find performance perfectly adequate, even peppy, and the fuel economy is phenomenal. I'm averaging right around 40mpg in mixed driving. If the new Forte has imperceptible faux shifts and the fuel economy is even better, wow! People who think Kia/Hyundai are still building the same crap from 25yrs ago are missing out on some really nice cars and excellent value. I discovered my Elantra was built in the USA, so that's an added bonus.
Nice to see them in the game as the domestics bow out
@@emeyer6963 Sad, but true. I looked into the domestics, which are the Ford Focus and Chevy Cruz, and I was not impressed with what actual owners had to say about their cars online. Hyundai/Kia are definitely building better cars than the domestics these days.
@@palebeachbum My 13' Kia Optima has never been in shop other than for oil changes since I got it.The dual clutch in the Focus has been troublesome since they debuted. And the Cruz just feels not well put together.
@@emeyer6963 That's great to hear about your Optima! I'm hoping my '18 Elantra lasts a long, long time. You're right about the auto transmission in the Focus (and Fiesta, too) being troublesome. That's an understatement. They're badly engineered and failure prone. The Cruz seems to not be a quality product either, from what I've read online.
8.1 secs for a compact car is a great time. a few years all compact cars used to do the deed in 10-11 secs. It's not a M3 o please give credit where it is due and don't bash a car for no reason. That's like complaining a Lamborghini is not practical.
It's not bad, but a similarly priced civic can do it in 7.something, and for $10,000 more you could get a dodge challenger which can hit 60 in the 6 second range.
I have a 2015, it'll go to 60 in about 7 flat. The 2019 loses about 40 horsepower and loses the 6 speed auto. I test drove one and was disappointed. I'm most likely going to hold onto the 2015 another year or so (I really do like it) and most likely go for a Mazda 3. Kia lost me with this weak engine and god awful transmission.
I have one and the I love the transmission and of you drive this in sports mode the engine becomes peppier. There is no problem passing or getting off the line.
@@rogervalkriye4133 2015 forte sx?
Made me laugh when he said half a second faster than the 2018 Kia. Who cares about half a second? When you buy a car designed for economy mileage, one or 2 seconds before arriving to 60mph don't matter. Next day you're 24 hours older.
The performance numbers aren't bad, but I'd probably just buy the base manual trim.
Can’t wait to see a retro review of this in 25 years
WhateverNevermind me too 😂
Proudly made in Nuevo Leon, Mexico
Why didn't they mention the standard Lane keep assist and forward collision warning on even the base FE?
Lucas Izaguirre because nobody really cares about it, nor wants it. Most drivers just turn it off and ignore its existence.
The IVT does have one hardware difference in that it uses a chain instead of a belt like a CVT, which gets rid of the rubberband feel that CVTs have when accelerating
Hahaha!! Good one
Doesnt make it any less shit or underwhelming.
I prefer the Elantra. It still uses a geared transmission and the option for a Turbo engine
@@ady9910 Really? I didn't know that. That's awesome!
I was really impressed with how quick it “shifts”, did not look like a CVT at all. Unlike Subaru which looks like an old 4 speed auto slipping on a banana peel.
Bought mine new....32 miles on the odometer. 52,000 miles later and not a single complaint. 39 mpg and enginestill runs smooth. Replaced the battery a month ago, the Florida heat took a toll on it, but I would recommend this car in a heartbeat
Jeeez I feel like I’ve watched this guy for decades now.
There is Forte GT with 5door hatchback, dct transmission, multi link independent rear suspension, and 1.6t engine in Korea....hope Kia US bring that to the States as soon as possible
Why do companies try to make CVTs act like regular transmissions? Why don't they either make them better CVTs or just switch to geared transmissions?
John Inama Standard torque converted transmissions (true geared), are inefficient and get worse fuel economy.
Auto makers are switching to CVTs because they are more efficient. People complain about how traditional CVTs behave, so automakers are starting to make them behave like a regular geared transmission with artificial shift points. I got used to driving CVT vehicles that behave like CVTs over the last few years. I like the smooth, linear acceleration. I just bought a new car with a regular geared 6-spd automatic and I don't understand why all the hate on CVTs. My new car shifts often in city and suburban environments and I find it rather annoying.
palebeachbum if you find shifting annoying, driving isnt for you.
@@LrulestheworldM8 ain't that the truth!
John Inama Honda uses a similar transmission on several models of motorcycles, a DCT.
SO Much nicer than a Civic! Civics are so overstyled.
The new civics r f@#$% ugly
Yep. Straight out of the mind of a Junior designer who had watched Transformers the night before.
@@carlosochoa2255 yup straight up disgusting overpriced crap
Great Job Kia ! by positioning those fog lights in the middle !
Looked this car over at the Phoenix Auto Show...beautifully done interior and gauges. Yes, needs some turbo power and a sport handling package to make it a great car...the Bierman "N" treatment...
That's like hybrid gas powered and non-ugly looking car! Those MPG's are almost as much as what hybrids get. I really like it. I'm probably not going to buy a compact sedan any time soon, but if I was then I would definitely give it a test drive. Well done KIA!
Wow, that bad boy looks as big as my older Accord!
Yep, maybe 2" shorter, but probably more horsepower.
I've never liked the idea of a simulated shifting CVT. It defies the basic functionality of a CVT (finding and maintaining the optimal rev range) and also makes for a less than pleasant conventional automatic feel. Toyota's implementation in the new corolla hatch seems to be the best blend in my opinion. Fixed first gear to get off the line, then standard CVT pull the rest. Solves the sluggish feeling and doesn't mask itself as something it's not.
Totally agree. What I like about the CVT cars I've driven is the the smooth, seamless acceleration.
Like a boat on the water.
I'm just not a fan of the sound of the engine being worked so hard all the damn time... For hybrids it's fine, but anything else it annoys the hell out of me. (Not to mention what damage it may do to the engine long term)
I'd be in a corolla le for 2024 if they weren't out at every dealership in my state.
Picked up a lxs and am very pleased with the space, mpg and lane keep assist.
Just wish it had an adaptive cruise.
The warranty is better than toyota, too.
Not a bad a to b car for work
Too bad they got rid of the hatchback. :-/
I'm sure it's coming it usually comes within the year of sedan start
What about the koup?
They added forte gt, with 1.6 turbo engine and 7 dct and hatchback style in korea market, this year
You can see it at soon
@@FlyBoiQ1 They State the Koup is dead, Remember the last one made was a 16' and it was on dealer lots still new into 18' not sure but I think lack of advertising like most korean products hurt that model. Just like you don't see advertisements for the k900 any more, or hell even the Cadenza... Same with the Azera or even the previous Veracruz
I swear following it at night thought it was an Audi or BMW
Why does John Davis look like he goes to the same tanning salon as George Hamilton?
I looked at the thumbnail and thought to myself. New Ford Focus. Need to step out of the kitty pool😂😂😂😂.
We don't understand !!
He said wheelbase is 3 inches longer then later says with same power and same wheelbase can it be faster ??
I just watched another video from motor week about a 1984 Ford EXP turbo that had the same quarter-mile time. Interesting to think the cars have not improved that much as far as acceleration
Mr Charles if this car was hooked up to a 4 speed automatic. It would pull numbers near the 7.2-4 range. Its not that the engine is slower. Its that manufacturers are choosing the cheap way out, because people keep buying them without knowing what is in them. And its cheaper to make a cvt and throw it into the car, than it is to spend 6 months developing a solid transmission design that will last you a decade.
This Forte is a foot longer, 5 inches wider, 6 inches taller, and weighs about 50% more.
If this had a turbo, it would be faster. Look at some of the old Motorweek reviews, cars were doing 10-14 seconds to 60. With bigger engines.
It’s basically a midsize sedan from 10 years ago
4:20 Did he say supposably?
Why Kia why? Why switch to a cvt garbitch trans? The regular 6spd automatic was great
Having driven the CVT, it's one of the least bad I've tried. Still a bit rubber bandy but the chain vs belt design does help. Ended up buying it with the manual tho since idk how kias first CVT will hold up and I plan on keeping the car a long time.
I would love a turbocharged Forte to compete with the Civic Si. I actually like the look of this car better, but I know Honda makes a damn good car.
Honda doesn't make damn good care anymore. Those days are gone. Both the 2.0L and 1.5L turbo are having problems already. I feel sorry for everyone who paid all that extra money for a Honda, got a short warranty, and have engine troubles.
It looks great. But cvt and touch screen? Nope. Wont bother with it. The car could be so much faster without that awful cvt.
LRulesTheWorld this car would be much faster if it was a civic
You do realize that this in the base engine and a sportier turbo engine is coming later...
Anthony Hodgson civics are slow tho.
Marq Mac they did just fine with a base engine and a regular transmission for about a decade now. I have no idea what brough about this change.
It's an economy car, not a sport sedan. So being fast isn't the point of this car. It's based on the 2017+ Hyundai Elantra. Same platform. Same engine. That car has a 6-spd automatic.
Why they make a mess with cvt transmission? It doesn’t make sense to tune up like a normal transmission and loose al the benefits from normal cvts...
cristopher jean perez villagran they had it in sport mode, I’m pretty sure it functions like a normal CVT in Eco mode.
I'm getting 35 mpg around town . then I put in sport manual mode and beat on it for fun . it performs fine for it segment
I get around 20MPG average in mine
Automatic transmission CVT is bad
CVT😡
Amtrak 2523 has a 6 speed manual as an option.
CVT Yuke puke
First view
This is definelty a step backwards for Kia
How?
I've driven civics for 20 plus years . just purchased a Forte . it equal if not better . go drive one !
Only sales will tell.
I test drove this car. I was actually impressed for the price. Acceleration isnt as bad as they make it sound and by far the best cvt I test drove
@@scottenser464 Same here had 3 Civic's, but they lost me as a customer with there over the top design and price. Love my 2018 Forte LX.
Engine is the main issue with this car. Too many accessories and not enough structure.
No Variable Valve Timing, no turbo with direct injection, no independent rear suspension. Has 6 speed manual option but only in the base trim level. Talk about a boring basic commuter car. But I can’t complain, there are much worst options available. *Cough* Mitsubishi Mirage.....
