I personally do not like to get into these kinds of discussions but for you I will make an exception. EMD has been around for along time from the early days of diesel locomotives and GE has been building locos for almost as long. I am working towards a career in the railroad industry myself, but I like the sound of a diesel engine cranking up, but I will agree some creature comforts like AC are nice. But I don't care, GE or EMD, I think they are both great since they are built in the USA.
Nothing beats the sound of a 16 / 645. The bigger 710s in the SD70s don't sound the same. But at a guess I would say he did that because he knew you were there with a camera !
If you read a bit down here, it's explained that the engineer did it for show. I would not rev an engine that high if it was cold and I doubt it was. The background clouds makes it hard to tell, but I don't see much smoke which further indicates that the engine was not cold.
The Two Stroke Turbocharged EMD - the most musical diesel ever built. I prefer the sound of the turbos on the 567D3/4 and 645E3 to the sound of the 645F and 710anything, but I still like them too.
@mountainlova1009 Continued.. EMDs turbos are so loud because they are set to a high rate of boost (air that is force inducted into the engine). GEs turbos arent boosted like that because they dont need to be. Thats why GEs chug and EMDs whine. Its a difference in how power is made. The GE 7FDL and GEVO 12 engines rely more on their internal components and make alot of raw block power while EMD relys solely on their turbos. If an EMD loses it's turbo, it is no better than an oversized toy train.
@Motorfordtoyota The turbo in this locomotive weighs more than a whole Power Stroke engine! Unless you've got a 170 liter, 18 ton engine to match, that turbo won't be making any sounds. Locomotive engines make 18-liter semi truck engines seem small, let alone tiny pickup engines.
@undercoverLsX A CN GP40-2W idles train in Valpo.(Idon't know where) Just listen! The engine barely got into run-8 because he got a green light. Me: is that clear??
@GordonFreemanD40 the 60 detroit the turbo wines alot louder and sharper, the newer cummins you cat really hear the turbo you just hear the growlingf the engine.. love the train sound tho.. so how big is the turbo on the train engine
@mountainlova1009 Amen to that. ALCo and GE pwn. Nothing against EMDs because I like some of them myself, but they fail to make the same power that GE does. Sure GEs have their failures, all locomotives, including EMD, have their failures. You have to think though, the more power an engine produces, the more wear and tear the engine will take. EMDs make less power which is why they last longer. If they made power like GE, they would fail alot. The EMD turbo is always boosted too high.
@nsrailfann4life91 Um, yeah... About that. What about EMD's non-turbo 567, & 645E series? LOL Those can make upwards of 2,000+ HP each without the need of any turbo. Just sayin' man. There are plenty of EMD GP38's, GP7's,GP9's, E, & F units, etc. out there without turbos that can hold there own when it comes to moving the goods.
@jetengine7 I was just joking. lol. Ive seen locomotive diesels being dissassembled for a rebuild. They are MASSIVE!! lol. ANd I dont know why I said Powerstroke since I hate fords. lol
Ok. I am confused. Unless the locomotive was just started, why in the hell are they just sitting there with the reverser in nuetral and jerkin the throttle? A complete wast of expensive diesel fuel and more uneccesary engine wear. If the locomotive was just started, however, this is normal as they do it to warm the engine up, but I didnt hear any loping to the idle, so I highly doubt that she was just started. Weird if you ask me.
B40s are good road locomotives, but are no good for switching...waay too much horsepower per axle! Wheelslip is real bad. CSX is downrating them to B20-8s for this very reason.
To settle the debate of GE Vs EMD, both have their strong and weak points. They both make decent locomotives, so why bust each others' balls over it? Yes, GE is proven to make more power more efficiently, hence their ES 12 cylinder that makes the same power as their old 16s, and yes EMD's radial trucks make a much more comfortable cab ride when taking curves and dealing with spaghetti rail. But, damn! Just lay the shit to rest already. Wipe the foam from your mouths and relax!
you are just Biased. Get over it, I don't hate on EMD, I've heard from numerous engineers that GEs are more powerful and have more torque but EMDs load faster. Each has its own advantage and disadvantage. I'm just more of a *fan* of GEs than EMD.
love the 645, miss those older engines they had the best engine sound imo, they screamed power

He's either pumping up the air or they do load checks out on the road now. Nothing like the sweet sound of a turbocharged 645e3.
Always enjoy hearing a turbo-charged EMD 645! Too cool. :)
gotta love the sound of EMD
Woot CN.. there is a CN track that goes by near my cottage in Parry Sound, Ontario ;p love the paint job on these things

sounds like the trainz built-in sd40-2's lol but they were louder and it kinda got annoying but this, this is just awesome!!!!!!
I just checked they have a maintenance facility in Mexico but their assembly plant is in Indiana as of 2011. according to Wikipedia at least.
I have been waiting for God-knows-how-long for an engineer to throttle up in idle for my camera...you are lucky xD

I think the engineer forgot to put the reverser in a position other than neutral! Good vid
with older locomotives like this you can not only see the power, but you could also hear it.
Gotta love that sound!

The sound of power.
It's okay man. I was in a pissed off mood those days. I got it now. Hear their K3L all the time sittin out at my friends house about 2 miles away.
Music to my ears!!!

Yes it sounds awesome, Nice catch
Nice Sound!
That whine reminds me of my wife! LOL
agree I like the Renfe class 333 EMD's from Spain over any 710 engines period
I want to hear that Turbo on a Powerstroke Ford!
Wow, thanks! Have you got a little bit more of this video so we can hear it run right down to idle?
For the record, CN 9523 is a GP40-2L(W) No Dynamics on this baby.
AC6000CW (or CW60AC for me) is beast.
nice sound
@montedude414 You think? Ohh well thanks for the view!
@undercoverLsX A CN GP40-2W idles train in Valpo.(Idon't know where) Just listen! The engine barely got into run-8 because he got a green light. Me: is that clear??
@GoldenCreekValleyRR Thank you
nice caught them!
Sweet video,I subbed you.
nice Turbo!
@xlechasseurx Thanks!
NOTCH 8!! nice sound.

nope, over here, we have them for yard and local service duty.
On this video i used my Canon A570 IS
I forget, does the W mean no dynamic brakes or what? I forget because there are former CN GP40-2L's here running switch jobs at the river terminal
good audio quality :)

Great!
I have been shooting guns for years without wearing ear protection and my ears are fine
Sorry I was late, Iceman. Just trying to help out. :)
I've always wondered, why do canadian locos have so many windows on the cab?
because CN didn't order them with dynamics
@jetengine7 I was just joking. lol. Ive seen locomotive diesels being dissassembled for a rebuild. They are MASSIVE!! lol. ANd I dont know why I said Powerstroke since I hate fords. lol
Because it was ordered without them.
@SkyhawkACE123 8 meter behind my home we can see like 6 rail ... xD!! amazing spot for train lover!! np prob btw! :)
Thanks for being 6 days late.
@GordonFreemanD40 Yeah I know I was kidding :)
Do those engines last long before a overhaul????
It weighs in at 263,000lbs
@GordonFreemanD40 I though the 50 series were 4 stroke..
"W" - Wide Cab

@bagelboi66 Hell yeah!!
@SkyhawkACE123 you seem passionate lol
@SkyhawkACE123 DON'T FEED THE TROLLS!
@undercoverLsX read it
@SkyhawkACE123 Cummins is far from gay. But saying this is a Cummins or any road going diesel is an insult.
Is there a problem with Canada?
No, not you. I'm talking to ACLTony. XD
lol your lucky he even answered you
Oh yeah. The L's for no dynamics. My bad. XD
sounds more like a compressor
Wow! Thats a bit hover!
why doesn't it have tdynamics
its not the engine its just the cleaner hoovering...
@ecologist96 Ill be sure and not do that
lol yea
haha ok buddy

They really are not even that loud.

@1jalv Absolutly not
doesn't sound like a urbo to me.

Name that sound
It's a Jet taking off?
no, guess again
uhhh.....a jet landing
Nope
idk, somebody killing a cat. I give up...
Show the video
no, sorry
I like B40-8s better
They are really not even that loud.
EMD sound weird to me.... No rhythm... needs more ALCO
ALCos were nicer
